Arizona's 1st Team Offense Practicing Two QB Sets
A source with Arizona's football team has noted some new formations and plays being practiced by the offense in preparation for the Bears. In particular, Arizona's more mobile back-up quarterback Matt Scott has been practicing with 1st team offense on option plays. Some of those option formations include Nick Foles spread out with the wide receivers as a deep passing threat off of a lateral.
If Scott is getting any significant time with the 1st team offense, it would seem like some of the Arizona coaches caught a bit of Cal's trip out to Reno. Let's all hope that Pendergast and a rejuvenated Mike Mohamed will sniff out any such trickeration!

Two QB sets?
Huh?
I can’t believe this is for more than one or two plays. This reduces the offense to 9 on 11. Unless the defense makes so many fundamental errors, this is a huge advantage for them.

Agreed, I'm not too worried.
Arizona will run this maybe once or twice as a trick play. It’s not like they’re going to scrap their already impressive offense to run an offense with which they have no in-game experience. I am interested to see how well they can run this, though. But it shouldn’t be nearly as well-run and deceptive as Nevada’s pistol offense.

Seriously. I don’t think any team except Oregon can gain much from the Nevada game. How is another team with no history of running pistol plays going to suddenly replicate the results of a team that has played the formation for years with an excellent senior QB with a veteran, 1,000 yard rusher in the same backfield. We’re talking apples and oranges.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Might make sense if both QBs were fast, but Foles is pretty slow.
Putting him out wide like some versions of the Wildcat will not catch Cal off-guard, and I highly doubt that Foles could outrun the linebacker, CB, or safety who will man up on him.

It wouldn’t be for him to outrun anyone, would it? Wouldn’t it be for him to catch a lateral, turn, and throw downfield?

No link, just word of mouth – so take it with a grain of salt. However, the person relating what was seen in practice hadn’t seen Cal last week, so the significance of running the option was lost on the observer.
Regarding two QBs on the field, if Foles can pass off of a lateral from Scott, his arm is all that’ll matter. However, I agree that Foles is a non-threat when it comes to speed.
but as soon as a lateral is thrown his way, whomever is spread out to defend him will bite immediately and I doubt Foles is fast enough to catch the lateral turn and get off a throw before being hit… but who knows he was able to get off a throw, deflected reception and another throw before he was hit last time he played Cal

I watched some of Arizona’s first game of the year and the offense sputtered when Scott came in to play QB. In fact, Toledo got its only points of the game when Scott came in and there was a holding penalty in the end zone for a safety.
1st-10, ARIZ4 10:58 K. Antolin rushed to the right for 3 yard loss
2nd-13, ARIZ1 10:15 N. Grigsby rushed to the right for 2 yard gain
3rd-11, ARIZ3 9:30 Arizona committed 3 yard penalty. Safety
I think it makes no sense at all. This team is built around Foles and is an efficient yard-eating machine when he’s in there. Frankly, I’d like to see Scott in there because an inexperienced QB will be easier to rattle. I guess we’ll find out in a couple days.
