Fan Appreciation Day was a success. Look for 3-4 photo posts in hte next few days.

BERKELEY – Saturday was a day for Cal football players and coaches to meet and interact with their fans during a pair of annual events following the team’s morning workout at Memorial Stadium.

The entire team and coaching staff signed autographs and took photos with fans for more than two hours at the annual Fan Appreciation Day at Memorial Stadium. The festivities began at 11:15 a.m. and included appearances by the Cal marching band, who played a clever instrumental version of the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ recent song “Dani California” perhaps in tribute to the school. The longest lines were for head coach Jeff Tedford, who was one of the last people to leave long after most fans had departed, and the senior starters.

D90 is a good choice. I also think the D60 is another good compact camera. My D50 is one of three nikons I own. I tend to use it when I have to run around because it is the lightest.

by J.T. on Aug 30, 2010 12:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I love the D50, no complaints at all.

I have some old lenses that don’t have a focus motor so unless I want to lose autofocus with those the D60/D5000 level won’t work for me.

-TwistNHook

by turkey on Aug 30, 2010 12:41 PM PDT up reply actions

The D50 really is a great camera, even today. My only complaint about it was the relatively small viewfinder, and some weird autofocus issues. But it always served me well.

by MR.F. on Aug 30, 2010 12:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, really the only reason I would want to upgrade is some better high iso performance and a big lcd screen. Everything else is great. I imagine I’m going to use the D50 until it’s dead.

Good point about the motor drives in the lenses for the D60. It is just another way for Nikon to make more money off of us. I will never give up my D50, it has worked too well for me over the years to throw it under the bus.

Field hockey loses to Miami:

BERKELEY – In the 2010 season opener Friday at Maxwell Family Field, the California field hockey team held a two-goal over Miami of Ohio at one point in the second half, but the Golden Bears weren’t able to hold on to the lead. The Redhawks emerged victorious, 4-3, in the first match of the 2010 campaign. Freshman Shannon Elmitt, one of the newcomers head coach Shellie Onstead praised throughout the preseason, tallied a goal and an assist.

“They seemed to have a lot of momentum in the middle part of the second half,” Onstead said. “Then, I thought we got ourselves back in the game. When they tied it, that was a big momentum shift for them. With six minutes left, that’s when you really find out what your team is all about. I think we did a couple things to get ourselves in a position to tie it. I have a lot of trust in my team because we pulled the goalie, and we hadn’t practiced that yet. We actually almost got something out of that, so I’m happy with that.”

Junior outside hitter Tarah Murrey was named the most valuable player of the tournament as she led the Golden Bears with 11 kills (1e, 23att, .435) and 14 digs. Murrey was joined on the all-tournament team by senior setter Carli Lloyd, and sophomore middle hitters Shannon Hawari and Correy Johnson.

BERKELEY – The No. 18/25 California women’s soccer team and No. 8/10 Santa Clara added more fuel to their already heated Bay Area rivalry with a 0-0 double-overtime draw on Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears (1-0-2) out shot the Broncos (2-0-1), 18-5, in front of a season-high 407 fans.

“The team deserves tremendous credit,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. “Santa Clara came out with a plan to try to thwart our attack and gave us very little space in the back. Our players were very patient but they were also very diligent in the way that they tried to attack. I’m very, very proud of them.”

Cal loses to Stanford in golf;

U
NIVERSITY PLACE, WA – Cal freshman Ben An’s quest to defend his U.S. Amateur title and become the first back-to-back winner since Tiger Woods won three in a row from 1994-96 ended Saturday when Stanford’s David Chung mounted a late comeback to win a semifinal matchup between the two players from rival Bay Area schools.

An and Chung were all square heading into the par-four 487-yard 18th hole but a double bogey by An gave Chung a one-up win.

No. 14 U$C at Hawaii, 8 PM PST on ESPN

NinersNation predicts 53 man roster:

Now that we’re through what most consider the most important preseason game of the year, writers are posting their 53-man roster projections with greater and greater frequency. The 49ers cut down to 75 players yesterday and will cut another 22 players on Saturday to meet the NFL’s roster limit. At this point we’ve got a fairly good idea of a vast majority of the roster, but there are still some small areas to be determined.

Matt Barrows put together a 53-man roster projection yesterday. I posted my own two days ago before the 49ers defeated the Raiders. I think Barrows made the best comment in his when he stated "Margin of error +/- 53 players. But really we know it’s not quite that difficult. It’s more like a margin of error of 4 or 5 players probably: those bubble players.

Silver and Black Pride look at Niners-Raiders game from Sat:

What Still Bothers Me

    * Mario Henderson’s inconsistency is looking awfully consistent.
    * Kick Return Blocking: It doesn’t look any better.
    * The drops. Brandon Meyers drop on Campbell’s 3rd down pass is a butterfly. Go back in time, squash that butterfly and witness an entirely different future unfold.
    * The battle for the last WR roster spot: No one is grabbing the captain’s hat.
    * Running to the right side of the line: I hope they look to run to the left side more than the right once the season starts. KA1 documented these woes well.
    * Jason Campbell’s wrist.
    * Michael Bush’s thumb: While it is said he will likely be available for Week One, I worry about the impact his thumb will have on his catching and blocking.

After spending the last two years monitoring the underground movement of seismic waves, two UC Berkeley scientists say they have broken new ground in understanding the North American continent’s geology.

Rise of violence at People’s Park:

A male victim was struck over the head with a skateboard after attempting to help a female victim who was attacked by up to twenty people in People’s Park last Wednesday, according to a UCPD crime alert describing the Aug. 25 incident.

The alleged attack and following assault with a deadly weapon mark the second incident of group violence in the park in less than a week, and community members worry new groups of homeless individuals staying at the park may have brought an increased aptitude for crime to the area.

I recall Woody Paige using this same argument on an episode of PTI years ago when they were debating Ben Roethlisberger riding his motorcycle without a help – the number of accidents involving cars is far greater than the number of accidents involving motorcycles! Ergo, motorcycles are far less dangerous!

Of course, I’m perfectly willing to believe that Twist was trying to say the rate of crimes committed by the non-homeless against the homeless is greater than the rate of crimes committed by the homeless against the non-homeless and he just wasn’t aware he needed to get that specific.

Daily Cal explores the relationship between Jewish and black musicians in early America:

While Jewish folk music and African American jazz often get credit for steering the course of popular music in the first half of the 20th century, the interplay between their distinct forms is rarely given consideration. After all, the first thing that comes to mind at the thought of blaring trombones and swinging rhythms isn’t typically Yiddish sayings or Hebrew prayers, and especially not gefilte fish – all of which proved to be pervasive influences in the musical selections at the Contemporary Jewish Museum’s new exhibit.

“Black Sabbath: The Secret Musical History of Black-Jewish Relations” invites the visitor on a somewhat tedious but enlightening auditory excursion to hear how aspects of Jewish life resonated with pioneering black performers. While these two historically marginalized groups gravitated towards recording studios between the 1930s and ’60s, the alchemy of their friendships and shared struggle for civil rights yielded a sonic landscape shimmering with rich cultural hues.

Entertainment Weekly reviews the Emmy's

Modern Family picks up awards, Mad Men triumphs, Lost get shafted harder than Twist in a Turkish prison

Wins for ABC’s freshman comedy began early with trophies for creators Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd for writing, and co-star Eric Stonestreet (Cameron Tucker), who accepted the prize for supporting actor by saying "all I wanted to be was a clown in the circus when I was a kid growing up." When accepting the Emmy for best comedy, Levitan gave a shout-out to all the show’s fans, big and small. "We are so thrilled that families are sitting down together to watch a television show, and we just wanted to say we are so happy that you have let us into your families," he said on stage, with the full cast behind him.

In contrast, the creator of Mad Men behaved as if he never left the stage when accepting the Emmy for best drama. Having already won the gold earlier in the night for writing, Matthew Weiner took the stage at ceremony’s end by saying "So where was I?" Remarkably, the actors on the drama have never won an Emmy, though castmembers like Jon Hamm, John Slattery and Elisabeth Moss have received multiple nominations.

Could threaten the airing of “Jersey Shore”

A woman, known only as J.P. in court documents, is suing the “Jersey Shore” cast, the show’s production company, and MTV’s parent company, claiming she was assaulted by show security after having an argument with Snooki. J.P. says her face was gashed when she was thrown to the ground, and this on the same night that Ronnie was arrested for his “one shot” knockout punch. The suit further alleges that MTV, Viacom, and 495 Productions are engaged in a criminal enterprise, by making money from a show that promotes criminal behavior. The Daily Record reports:

Detroit Free Press columnist impressed by Jahvid

Hope the tight hammy is nothing serious

This is why rookie Jahvid Best might not only be a delight to the eye, but also a shock to the system because Detroit hasn’t seen a running back with that combination of explosiveness and elusiveness since a guy you might remember around here from the ’90s.

No names, please. There’s no need for any more pressure on the young man.
Best’s introduction to Ford Field dropped jaws and loosened vocal cords. He took a handoff, found a seam on the left side and BEEP! BEEP! … ZOOM! He got 51 yards on the Lions’ first play. And then Matthew Stafford hit him with a short pass in the right flat on the second play. Best stopped at full speed, changed direction — much to the chagrin of a approaching Browns defender who lunged but tackled nothing but air — and gained another 10 yards.

Best only took the field for three plays, just enough to leave everybody hungry for more. He couldn’t get his hamstring loose and Jim Schwartz wisely shut him down for the night.

Aside from an accurate, strong-armed quarterback, nothing affects an offense more than an electric running back. He takes the heat off the offensive line because opposing defensive fronts can’t relentlessly attack the pocket without worrying about Best.
Whereas Kevin Smith could only get you 5 yards in that situation, Best could get you 50.

Yes, I am an Old Blue. Now get off my lawn.

The first rule of betting on college football

Never bet on the first weekend of games

There is way too much “unknown” about college football in week 1. The risk is higher because expectations are often set based on last years team with last years players and until you actually see something from a team, you’re exposing yourself to a much higher risk.

7

by Rishi on Aug 30, 2010 9:28 AM PDT up reply actions

hmmmmm, ok valid point. So, week 1 is usually cupcake time so I would stay away from “good” games with 2 reasonably competitive teams. Normally, I shy away from big spreads but week 1 is the week to bet them.

Look for good teams playing at home against shitty teams. Think about the “good” team coach and see if you know if he has a rep. i.e. Texas is playing Rice (in Houston but Texas will outnumber Rice fans 3-1 easy). Huge spread but Mack Brown almost never covers big spreads becaus ehe calls the dogs off early. Florida likes to run up the score for example, so does Petrino at Arkansas. Find a team that runs it up and balance against the spread.

Fire Starkey Moral Dilemma

Basically, I was just given a new position at my company less than 2 months ago after being strung out for 4-5 months with the threat that my old job would be eliminated. The new position is ok, pays about what I probably should be making and is relatively close to home.

Now I am being recruited by a company in San Antonio for a similar position but the pay is about 20% more and cost of living in SA is about 20% less than Austin. I feel some guilt since I just accepted this new job and if I left, my boss (whom I respect and like) would be absolutely screwed with the work load and he went out on a limb to get me my current spot. At the same time, I am a single income family with 4 of us to feed and house and if I am to move, I should do it in the next year (Little Miss Fire Starkey has started 8th grade- don’t want to move her during high school if possible).

Thoughts? Should I sit tight and be loyal to the guy who went to bat for me and I make $ enough to be comfortable. Or should I continue to pursue the new spot, probably move the family and be considerably more than comfortable financially despite the beating the boss will take over my defection?

It’s one thing to be loyal to your boss, but who’s going to watch out for you if your boss leaves? It sounds like the rest of the company wasn’t exactly taking care of you for a while. So you can tell your boss you appreciate everything he did for you, but you’re just not high on the rest of the company and the situation is too good for you to pass up.

Is the pay / COL differential enough to make living in San Antonio worthwhile? I’d answer that before I started in on the corporate loyalty thing.

Do you get along well enough with your boss to give him / her a head’s-up about this? I’d consider presenting it as “I’m really happy but the wife got a terrible fright over the uncertainty” or something like that. That way it doesn’t look like you’re being completely mercenary – not that there’s anything wrong with that.

I can tell you from the inside that if any of those companies regards it in their best interest to get rid of any employee at any time, they will do so without a qualm. If your employer decided tomorrow that it didn’t need you, you would be gone. So don’t let loyalty to your employer govern your decision. That said, if you decide to leave, do whatever you can to avoid burning any bridges, by giving as much notice as possible and doing whatever else you can to ease the transition.

A key sentence that is means more than some may realize...

“my boss (whom I respect and like)” – I cannot overstate the importance of the relationship you have with your boss. You don’t really know the working environment in SA, and may be leaving what sounds like a healthy situation for who knows what in the humidity capital of Texas. Another key ingredient is the opinion of Mrs. Fire Starkey…. does she have a strong relationship network that she will lose – she may even get a bit depressed if it takes a while to build new relationships equivalent to the quality/quantity of what she is currently experiencing in Austin. You need to weigh the cost of non- monetary benefits as high (or more highly) that the potential monetary gain.

by SierraBear on Aug 30, 2010 10:03 AM PDT reply actions

Cal has a neat “background” add up on http://www.sfgate.com/sports/

Crumpy also has a piece on Eselu (who?), who likes music:

Eselu flipped the latches on a battered black case, withdrew his handcrafted KoAloha ukulele and settled onto a splintered bleacher seat nearly three times as old as his instrument. Joining him were teammates Aaron Tipoti and Solomona Aigamaua, Hawaiians like Eselu.

“My youngest brother, he’s actually killing it. He’s better than me,” Eselu said while fingering out a tune. “I (play it) to wind down. Everything is so upbeat, so then you hop on the uke and it’s chill time. I usually play by myself, sometimes in the locker room.”

Eselu got a taste of the big time in 2007 when the music department at Moanalua High School in Oahu was invited to play in Carnegie Hall. He left his uke at home in favor of his upright bass.

“It was crazy,” Eselu recalled. “Everything was all gold and velvet. You could hear everything come back to you when you played. We had one of the top music departments in the nation.”

These days, Eselu jams mostly at the Albany apartment he shares with Tipoti, a defensive lineman, Aigamaua, a tight end, and freshman linebacker Steven Fanua, the only Californian in the bunch.

Several years ago, Cal’s Polynesian players got in the habit of gathering in the bleachers after practice to socialize for a few minutes before continuing with their daily schedules. The current players continue the practice, although they are joined by some of their non-Polynesian teammates, an example of team-building of which coach Jeff Tedford would approve.

Wilner!!!

* We remain weeks (and weeks) away from a final decision on the makeup of the divisions.

Multiple sources have said the matter won’t be decided until early October, when the athletic directors meet, and possibly not until late October, when the CEOs gather in San Francisco.

* According to those same sources, the current "lean" — and that’s all it is right now — is to split the league in a North/South manner with all four California schools together in the South with the Arizonas.

When I expressed mild surprise ("The Northwest schools are OK with that?"), the response I got was: Expect to see major scheduling concessions for schools in the North and perhaps even changes in the TV revenue distribution.

* A nine-game conference season is a lock.

* The debate over the location of the championship game — neutral site vs. the higher ranked/seeded team’s home field — continues within league circles. The arguments, best I can tell, are these:

Pro home field: A guaranteed sellout.
Con home field: Very difficult to stage the game (stadium prep, hotel rooms, etc.) with as little as one week notice. Limited potential for ticket revenue, depending on the size of the venue.

Pro stadium: Great for signage/sponsors and all game-related logistics. Tickets plentiful for corporate clients. Higher revenue potential from marketing and tickets.
Con stadium: The potential for tens of thousands of empty seats.

* Yes, Colorado is giving every indication that it will spend two more seasons in the Big 12 because the school and the league can’t work through the exit fees.

But the guess here is that the Pac-10 intervenes at the last minute with enough cash to make CU’s arrival happen sooner rather than later.

Commissioner Larry Scott does not want to spend a year as the Pac-11 and delay plans to re-brand the conference. He wants the league to become the Pac-12 — and make sure everyone knows it’s the Pac-12 — as soon as possible.

5 divisional and 4 cross-divisional games…I hope they only use the divisional games for divisional standings or else it would be like the 7-league game Pac10 issue of a few seasons ago, where someone wouldn’t have to play USC or Oregon.

I’m pretty sure they would still use all conference games for divisional standings – using only divisional games would be a pretty radical departure from the precedents established by the ACC, SEC, and Big 12. Which isn’t to say it wouldn’t be a better idea, necessarily, just that I don’t think most teams would have the stomach to buck precedent like that right now.

Yeah, 5 divisional games are too few crown a real champion, and it really devalues the other 4 conference games. If we had gone to the Pac-16, I think this idea would have made great sense, with 7 divisional games, then 2 cross-divisional games.

I mean, theoretically, maybe you could get a dominant team benching several starters on their out-of-division games, and then banking on their ability to sweep their divisional foes AND win the conference championship game on their way to a Rose Bowl or something, but that seems extremely risky, which would be wayyyyyy out of character for a college FB coach, and secondly, if the team is THAT dominant, then they’d be in national championship contention and want to go undefeated anyway.

they’re well set up for such an event, with (relatively) cheap hotels close to stadium and not being too far from the airport. It’s likely one of the warmest climates, which would be nice that time of year. I suppose Glendale would get a look, but I could see that being like the ACC Conf. Game.

From what I saw, general Cal section is an upper decker endzone corner in the direct sun. Donor Cal section is below it, chance of partial shade. Stadium is pretty cozy and all seats should be fairly close. It’s on the scale of Wazzoo, which is bigger than I expected. Metal bleachers galore rattle rattle rattle. Has a track but the teams will be standing on them sideline and the end zone seats go right on top of it.: the track passes under the bleachers in a tunnel, it is genius! Turf is same as ours. Area around the stadium is all newer campus buildings: student union is right there, arena, large lawns, large parking structures.

One of Tedford’s big things was that he didn’t think it would be a good idea to afford any potential participant de facto homefield advantage. So while there would be some advantage afford to UCLA or USC down in San Diego, presumably it wouldn’t be as much as if the game were in the Coliseum, or Qwest, or University of Phoenix Stadium.

But you’re talking about 1 game every several years. Besides, replace it with a better bowl game because you didn’t finish stuck behind USC in your division, or because you went to the Pac-10 championship game and got to play them there, and it starts to look better. Plus isn’t the point of expansion that we will get extra revenues anyway?

by atomsareenough on Aug 30, 2010 10:43 AM PDT up reply actions

A few things:

1. Yes, we will get further extra revenues and then if we have a home LA game, we’ll have even more money than that!
2. I don’t think it’s one game every several years, because we’re talking about LA home games. If we are in the Northwest division, we might play a LA school each year (although that is not guaranteed), but it would not necessarily be a home game.
3. Why do you continue to assume we’ll lose to USC? If we want to be the best, let’s beat the best! Also, next time we beat USC at home will be epic. So, let’s do it!

In my preferred divisional alignment, UCLA would be in our division, so we’d play them every year, alternating between Berkeley and Pasadena like we do now.

I made a spreadsheet with a 10-year hypothetical schedule. With 9 conference games, meaning we play Stanfurd every year, and 3 of the other 5 teams in the other division, that means we’d play USC 6 times in 10 years. That means we miss 1 “LA home game” every 5 years. Honestly I can’t see how that’s such a huge deal.

Eh, ESPN changes flavor of the month pretty quickly – and if SC’s appeal on sanctions fails (which it probably will), there’s a lot of potential downtime ahead.

I don’t either. I think that, combined with all Pac12 games counting in the divisional standings, will make it like the Big12 and Cal would look better being matched up in a division that does not include USC.

Not real happy about the 9 game sked, would have rather seen an 8-league game sked with a rule like every team must play at least one BCS-conference foe a year.

Regarding the conference championship game. Why doesn’t the conference move the start date for conference play earlier, finish conference play one week earlier, have one week for either OOC games or a bye, then host the conference championship game. The extra week could help mobilizing fans and teams to attend the game.

by chowder on Aug 30, 2010 10:50 AM PDT up reply actions

Also, why don’t we put the top two teams in one division, then have them schedule really weak teams OOC? That way we’ll get two teams in the BCS constantly! It works for the Big XII

Because there won’t be enough OOC opponents to play? I remember in a particular NCAA game, I was Notre Dame so I could schedule 12 games against Top25 teams…it was quite challenging to fill quality opponents at the end of the season.

* Aside from the Big Four (Kevin Riley, Shane Vereen, Marvin Jones and Mike Mohamed), Cal’s season hinges on the play of:

Keenan Allen or Jeremy Ross, because a second option at receiver is essential to a healthy passing game … Darian Hagan, because a return to his 2008 form would cover up so many holes elsewhere … Mychal Kendricks, because the Bears need a playmaker off the edge.

ESPN.com fantasy article on the Jet

Here:

Can Jahvid Best be the next Chris Johnson?

Jahvid Best is amazingly talented at running with a football. Jahvid Best is also potentially fragile. These are the two realities that feed and cloud the buzz surrounding this rookie.

Scouting reports on Best are traditionally rife with hyperbole: “Elusive with elite speed” is certainly part of the lexicon, but “explosive” is a mandatory declaration. His NFL combine-best 40-yard-dash time (4.35 seconds) and gaudy college résumé are among the many pros in the Best debate. The cons, however, are littered with previous injury reports on his hip, elbow and shoulder, to name a few. It’s difficult to be explosive from the trainer’s room.

Several articles have discussed how much Lions coach Jim Schwartz pined over Best as late April approached. The coach mentioned that he craved a home run threat out of the backfield after seeing the amazing boost that Chris Johnson’s rookie season brought to the Titans in his last year coaching the defense in Tennessee. Schwartz’s uniquely enthusiastic admiration for Best inspired this treasure that he shared with Yahoo! Sports’ Michael Silver: “Some people watch adult videos on their computer; I go to YouTube and watch Jahvid Best highlight clips. That’s what gets me going.”

Kind of creepy, Coach, but good to know. Another thing that might be good to know is that “fast” is a relative concept, as Best belongs in the extreme high end of the spectrum. As a track sensation during his senior year in high school, Best’s fastest 100-meter time equaled Justin Gatlin’s and is better than Tyson Gay’s when they were seniors.

Basically the QB throws an ill-timed pitch to his unprepared RB in an option. The ball goes over his head and the RB catches it. He them proceeds to go backwards while the defenders try to drag him down (and fail). As he gets to his own 10yd line he for some unfathomable reason decides to throw the ball in the air. The ball lands in the endzone and the defenders fall on it for a TD.

Sacramento!

The River Cats won four out of five this weekend over the Fresno Grizzlies to take a one-game lead in the PCL South, with eight games to play.

Jermaine Mitchell had only been in town for two days, not long enough to find a place to live or even get his name engraved on his River Cats jersey. On a calm, pleasant Sunday afternoon at Raley Field, though, he earned a place in Sacramento Triple-A baseball lore. Mitchell singled in the eighth inning to drive in the eventual winning run in a 2-1 victory over Fresno, giving the River Cats a one-game lead over the Grizzlies and a critical tiebreaker edge with eight games left in the Pacific Coast League’s Pacific South Division race.

The Giants are in a hot pennant race (to the extent the wild card race can be called a “pennant” race), the A’s are not. People always jump on the bandwagon of whichever team is in the race. In 1989 I was in New York when the A’s were in town, and went to the game. I was expecting to get a lot of grief from Yankee fans. But — to my absolute shock — there were just about as many fans wearing A’s hats at Yankee Stadium as Yankee hats. That was a sight I had never thought to see. I’ve never understood those bandwagon types.

A question I can answer! Front mezzanine is better than rear or side Orch, not doubt. I never sit in the balcony, but its fairly high up there, so, not as good a view. Box seats, great if you have a bunch of friends to go with. Center Orch are the best seats though (were I have season tix). the nice thing about the box seats is that A) you have your own coat room, and B) you can be late, in the rest of the joint they make you wait until the first act is done before they let you take your seats.

Don is like Gene Simmons?

On a slightly related note, I heard a story about Gene Simmons and all the women he bangs. A comedian who was opening for Kiss told this story at I show I was at.

One night, he’s sitting in the hotel bar and he sees Gene Simmons leaving the bar with this drop dead supper hottie that he knew was a former Miss Whatever state they were in (someone in the Midwest). Ok, he thinks, gene Simmons tongue doing some damage.

The next night, he sees Gene leave the bar with this dumpy, slightly overwight chick. He’s stunned, WTF? So he asks Gene what his deal is.

And I quote: “Sex is like food. Some nights you can have filet mignon and its great but you can’t have that every night. So sometimes, when you’re hungry you just gotta eat at McDonald’s.”

This strikes me like that. Don is eating at McDonald’s.

Nailed it
OS_Beaver says:
August 30th, 2010 at 12:21 pm 69..This is awful. The zipper is the only fair way to divide things. We are going to start out by flat out lying to Colorado that they would be paired with someone from Southern Cal. Now they don’t get any CA team in their division and the same with the NW schools. This is THE ABSOLUTE worst case scenario for these 6 schools. All 6 are greatly opposed to it. How can the Pac-10 jam this down their throats? Zipper unites the whole conference and you feel you are equally a part of the whole breadth of the conference. Now we will have infighting and the potential for "North" teams to be left out of a future PAC-16. Is this what Larry Scott wants? Is he trying to find a way to dump a WSU or Colorado in the future? The CA Zipper with Cal and UCLA joining the NW schools would be tolerable. Zipper would be by far the best way to strengthen the league. This plan will head us down the disastrous path of the Big 12. The NW schools have no interest in being paired with the Mountain schools and vice versa. Not only will there be infighting against the CA schools but you have left a scenario where the 6 teams all don’t get what they want most..solid exposure in California and especially Southern California. This will be a travesty for recruiting for these 6 teams. I don’t see how for 1 second how they can’t be pounding their fists on the table. We are breaking this conference if we go anywhere near this setup.

this site keeps getting tossed around in the comments:

http://pac12cooler.com/

Teams would always play their side of the graphic, PLUS the teams in their row every season. Then they would play 2 of the remaining 4 teams. This results in every team playing every other team twice out of every four years, and at least once in each stadium over a four-year college career. All teams would have exposure to each region of the Pac-10 every year and would also play all their regional rivals.

Examples:

Washington always plays (Oregon, Oregon State, Washington State, Cal, UCLA, Arizona, and Colorado) and two of (Stanford, USC, ASU, Utah)

USC always plays (Cal, Stanford, UCLA, Oregon State, Washington State, Arizona State, and Utah) and two of (Washington, Oregon, Arizona, Colorado)

Colorado always plays (Arizona, Arizona State, Utah, Washington, Oregon, Cal, UCLA) and two of (Stanford, USC, Washington State, Oregon State).

Kind of confusing at first, but I think I like it. The main drawback is that Random College Football Fan has no idea which division, say, Colorado is in.

say Utah has a really good team one year. Their path to the ??? Divisional Crown involves beating the Zona’s and Colorado, while USC has to tackle the 3 other CA schools. It seems as if this, and any derivative that has cross-divisonal games counting in league standings, could create mythical divisional champions, which is completely unacceptable for the Conference of Champions.

This is odd. Stanford releases a depth chart without Chris Owusu. Harbaugh says he had nothing to do with it. What?

Harbaugh tersely said depth chart did not come from him. Offered no insight on Owusu ’s status http://bit.ly/ci3cQn

It is pretty much their official slogan now.

The "What’s Your Deal?" package gives a buyer the USC game this year, minus the element of Carroll, plus two others of choice.

When are we allowed to stop being surprised when team USA struggles? It’s been at least a decade since they could win just by virtue of showing up.

No quiero. Though, I heard a rumor from a co-worker that supposedly there are certain TB locations are randomly much better than normal ones, like for example the one near Magic Mountain supposedly bills itself as the #1 Taco Bell in America… I probably wouldn’t ever bother to find out though, because even A-grade Taco Bell is still garbage.

It’s huge, but I like it b/c it’s set up so simple. Five parallel terminals (plus the T-gates), connected by two trains that run back and forth.

I might agree on Dulles since they put the train system in. It was supposed to be an improvement over the people movers and was a gigantic waste of money – it takes longer to get to / from the gates than before. Plus they’ve had to hire people to coach passengers on the platform, and it’s even less fatty / oldster friendly than before because of all the extra walking… in fact, I’d almost rather they had just put in pedestrian tunnels.

by DC Trojan on Aug 30, 2010 2:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed

The trains themselves are fine, but it’s the extra walking that’s the time waster. Although, what’s funny about the ‘gigantic waste of money’ comment is that the people movers themselves always struck me as frivolous — they could have bought regular buses to do the same job, probably for a fraction of a price.

They were originally design to take you right to the plane, I think, not out to another terminal. But yes its just plain weird now.
