This wasn’t just homesickness. There was a long list of distractions. I’m not going to get into specifics, but you can imagine for us to not put up more resistance to him transferring, how long that list was. It was evident when he got here that he didn’t want to be here. He wanted to do other things. He wanted to run around with his ex-buddies and do all that. There wasn’t a lot of dedication to school, football and everything like all the other players had. I wanted him to go and find a place where he could be happy and the rest of our guys would want to be here and be focused and productive
Jeff Tedford on the Chris Martin situation. This is about as close as he's ever gotten to publicly calling out an athlete on the record. (HT turkey)

What do you guys think about candid Tedford?
What I find odd is that each time he’s asked about the Martin situation he seems to say more and more.
He certainly has no obligation to say anything more than what he said initially, but I selfishly appreciate it anyway.

I have a feeling he was very unhappy about Martin’s conduct throughout the summer, and it’s all just boiling to the surface now. It’s pretty startling considering how he usually keeps this stuff under wraps.

I’m curious if it was Tedford that forced him to transfer more than Martin choosing unilaterally to transfer. Tedford has certainly earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to running a clean program.

Tedford has had to explain the situation to some donors in detail while the rest of the fanbase and media that is curious about the situation had nothing to really go on. To put the issue to rest since camp is days away and because the question wold be asked continuously, what needed to be said was said. Granting the interview to BI, where rumor mongering and conspiracy theories are second nature, was a good move in my opinion.
I did find it interesting he went to BI rather than Okanes. He usually never gets frank with them on sensitive subjects like this.

I like candid Tedford. He’s certainly better than cagey Tedford.

I like knowing what really happened — and I think we all feel that way. However, I question the act of saying so much regarding a former player. It seems like the best thing to do is just give some sort of vague statement that lets the former player save some face and just forget about it.

Well, yes and no. If he had gone into some sort of angry/bitter tirade, or had detailed the actual list of transgressions or issues surrounding the player, then I think it would’ve been in poor taste. But considering that the recruit was one of the most high-profile in the nation, and the way he left was so sudden and shocking, and he’s being asked about it a lot, I think that it’s not a bad idea to shine just a little bit of light on the situation so that fans can at least understand that it was there was good reason to it and that it’s probably for the best (both for the team AND the player) that the player found another school in a different area.

Basically, just so that everyone knows that, hey, there were some specific circumstances surrounding this player and geographic area, and so it just wasn’t the right fit.

From the sound of things, Martin could have turned into a real pain in the ass for Tedford and Cal. It’s probably for the best of the school he transferred.
As for Tedford being candid, I’m glad he spoke his opinion without getting personal. Dan Gilbert should take lessons.

Yeah, I thought he had the right balance of disclosure and tact.

But as to the statement “[i]t was evident when he got here that he didn’t want to be here,” does that mean Summer Bridge, or Cal itself?
If the latter, why the hell did he choose the school if he didn’t want to be here? I mean, if there’s no dedication to football either, then what in the hell is Chris Martin even doing by wasting everyone’s time?
Sadly, he’s sounding more and more like one of those players who would have the potential never quite matching up to his performance. The upside is that we can stop asking those questions of “if” a helluva lot sooner.

It just means that he wasn’t able to focus because of all the people he was hanging out with. Presumably if he’s in a place where he doesn’t know those people, it won’t be as much of an issue.

In that instance, I just wish he had said how you’ve explained it, rather than how Tedford phrased it, which made it sound like Martin was an intransigent toddler throwing a hissy fit because he was put into timeout at pre-school, or something similar.
I’m happy he’s someone else’s problem now.

i guess
At least “candid tedford” helps alleviate any worries we had about Chris Martin leaving Cal. Now we know that his transfer was an individual problem and not a team one. Keenan & King seem to be doing fine here (side note: good thing Kouandjio didn’t pick Cal otherwise our freshman threesome would have a terrible nickname).
It seems that Martin leaving is a plus for Cal, so best of luck to him at Florida and we can move on with our season. I guess Tedford could’ve just said “it’s the best for both Cal and Martin” instead of going into more specifics but at least now we know a little more about why the move will benefit everybody so we aren’t left to wonder what could have been.
I would like aggressive Tedford better.
