Raiders sign Rolando McClain
[1]
A league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that McClain signed a five-year deal worth $40 million that included $23 million guaranteed.
…
With McClain’s signing, Oakland has gotten all nine of its draft picks under contract. The Raiders traditionally have done a good job getting their top picks into camp on time with the exception of JaMarcus Russell’s lengthy holdout in 2007 that lasted until the start of the regular season.
Darrius Heyward-Bey missed the morning session on the first day a year ago before signing a deal that guaranteed him at least $23.5 million.
That Heyward-Bey pick looks better every year, doesn’t it?

Temporary Weight Tent
Article on Cal’s temporary training facilities
For the next year or so, this airy 14,000-square-foot temporary structure wedged alongside Centennial Drive will serve as the weight room and training room for the Cal football team as well as 10 other men’s and women’s teams on campus.
AthleticsNation discusses Chill-led As victory:
In what can only be described as a must-win situation, the A’s—on the strength of Trevor Cahill’s best start of the season in a hitter’s park facing a great-hitting team—bounce back from last night’s heartbreaking loss to take the game from the Texas Rangers with a score of 3-1. This impressive feat was accomplished without the use of Andrew Bailey, sidelined for at least one more day.
Cahill pitched 8 innings of scoreless baseball, allowing Texas only two hits. To put that in perspective, the Rangers had more errors in the game than hits off Cahill. And his gem couldn’t have come at a better time; with the Angels’ loss, the A’s move into sole possession of second place, and keep hope alive.

Congress reconsidering ban on internet gambling
[1]
WASHINGTON — With pressure mounting on the federal government to find new revenues, Congress is considering legalizing, and taxing, an activity it banned just four years ago: Internet gambling.
On Wednesday, the House Financial Services Committee approved a bill that would effectively legalize online poker and other nonsports betting, overturning a 2006 federal ban that critics say merely drove Web-based casinos offshore.
The bill would direct the Treasury Department to license and regulate Internet gambling operations, while a companion measure, pending before another committee, would allow the Internal Revenue Service to tax such businesses. Winnings by individuals would also be taxed, as regular gambling winnings are now. The taxes could yield as much as $42 billion for the government over 10 years, supporters said.

TrueBlueLA talks about Dodgers losing, whcih they did:
The Dodgers fell in love with their recent formula of winning low-scoring shutouts, and it looked for a while like a third-inning RBI single by Jamey Carroll would hold up. But a trio of two-run rallies by the Padres ended the Dodgers fun and San Diego took the second game of the series 6-1.
Hiroki Kuroda was cruising through five scoreless innings, having thrown just 63 pitches. He had retired 10 straight batters at that point, and a number of scoreless streaks were in play:
* 15 straight innings by Kuroda
* 30 straight innings by Dodger pitchers
* 31 straight innings by Dodger pitchers at Petco Park

Uh. Maybe you just don’t get the context of the joke, and that’s why you aren’t laughing. It’s really funny.
See, we can joke about the game now. If the Giants had gone on to lose a game in which they had a seven-run lead, things would have been just a wee bit more dour around here. As is, the blown save was worth setting up the walk-off win. Right? Right?

NinersNation looks at Antonio Gates new deal as it relates to Vernon Davis:
Now Antonio Gates has been productive for longer than Vernon Davis but I think it’s safe to assume that if VD has even close to the same kind of year in 2010 that he did in 2009 we’ll be locking him up fast. He’s younger, more talented and has more upside to his career so there’s no reason we can’t pay him more.
My guess it’ll be six years $45 million. with $25 million guaranteed. We’ve talked about this before, back when Celek extended and when we extended Patrick Willis and I think this is the most realistic figure, however I wouldn’t be totally shocked to see a 7 year deal worth close to $50 million.

Serious question: what’s the big deal about the last few years of a long contract when (a) the contracts aren’t guaranteed and (b) players routinely hold out mid-deal if they feel they’ve “outperformed their contract”?
I don’t think the years themselves are the thing that anyone looks at, it’s more just the guaranteed money.

Silver And Black Pride looks at training camp for Raiders:
Is it fair to call this the first day of the season? It kinda feels like it. Training camp and consequently the Raiders assault on the ’10 season is underway. With Mr. McClain signing last night it means all hands will be on deck for the first day of non-contact practices.
That’s right, the team that lost two days of OTA’s for having too much contact when it wasn’t allowed is going to go exclusively non-contact for the first four days that it is allowed. Seems like they could have switched that up a bit. Cable Guy is sold on the positives of this approach. Here is what he had to say:

Chancaellor gives grants to local community:
As part of an ongoing effort to strengthen ties between UC Berkeley and the local community, campus officials awarded $225,000 in grants to various city projects Friday, the majority of which are aimed at assisting local public school students.
The Chancellor’s Community Partnership Fund’s nine-member advisory board awarded more than half of this year’s funds to Berkeley youth programs after a two-month review application process. Other programs awarded grants include those improving students relationships with local Greek organization residents, making safety improvements throughout the city and encouraging energy saving practices.
Seven of the 15 recipients are education programs that submitted some of the strongest proposals this year, according to Caleb Dardick, director of the UC Berkeley Local Government and Community Relations office and chair of the board.

Texas Decides Cal is Enough is 2015-2016
Will no longer play Minnesota:
“We are extremely disappointed that the series with Texas will not take place,” said Minnesota Director of Athletics Joel Maturi. “Our institution, student-athletes and fans were very excited about having a nationally respected program like Texas on our schedule. However there are complex rights issues in play that are beyond our control. It’s unfortunate that a mutually acceptable resolution could not be found that would have allowed the games to be played.”

Daily Cal looks at FAFSA verification:
While focus is often placed on simplifying the Federal Application for Student Aid, not enough attention has been paid to the lengthy and convoluted procedure following the application process, which leaves potentially eligible students without aid, according to a recently released report.
The July Institute for College Access and Success report points to the FAFSA verification process as a major problem, placing a burden on students as well as colleges. This process requires students to resubmit or send in additional information if their application has inconsistencies, estimations, omissions or if the student is selected at random.
In an attempt to simplify the FAFSA procedures and provide greater access to students, the federal government eliminated 26 questions from the form and restructured the website in January, but the report states that this kind of emphasis ignores other post-application issues.

Over the last decade, the omnipresent Internet has essentially eradicated the necessity of the human element from our day-to-day lives. Today we talk online, we shop online, we even go to school online; and if we want someone to read us a bedtime story, well, there’s an app for that.
As we continue to glean more and more of our goods and entertainment from the Internet, stores selling books and movies have witnessed a dramatic drop in their customer bases.

Daily Cal looks at Wild Australia at Oakland Zoo:
hen I was a child growing up in the East Bay, my mother took me there frequently to see the giraffes and – my favorites – the squirrel monkeys. Nearby Oakland was a foreign place – glamorous San Francisco was much more familiar – and yet I liked its zoo better; I remembered wondering at the apparent comfort with which the big bears lay on so much concrete in their enclosures at the San Francisco Zoo.
If Oakland and San Francisco are any indication, zoos don’t change much. And when they do, it happens one exhibit at a time. The new exhibition at the Oakland Zoo is a notable improvement, providing plenty of what zoo animals typically, and sometimes egregiously, lack: Space.

Former Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli is expected to be admitted to one of three graduate programs at the University of Mississippi, which should make him eligible to play as early as this season, a source told ESPN’s Joe Schad.

… Masoli’s transgressions really aren’t that bad. His involvement in the stealing of some laptops from the SAE house at Oregon is really more akin to “bafflingly stupid” than thuggery … There’s a reason most states wipe juvenile records clean, and that’s because people mature. I won’t gussy it up here: when he was sixteen, he was locked up for a while in juvenile hall for assaulting and robbing somebody at a California shopping mall. I have no idea what the details of the case are, but that’s a pretty serious transgression, especially for a sixteen year old. But, what’s really important to remember is that Masoli has committed no such transgression since.
Why are your standards so low???
and many, many Rebels have done far worse than Jeremiah Masoli while spending time in Oxford.Oh. Carry on then.
In addition to their general stance on Masoli, I find it interesting that they are acting like he is a savior for them. But, Masoli was never a great passing quarterback, and outside of a system that excels with a running quarterback, I don’t picture Masoli succeeding.

If we’re going to believe the SI article is 100% accurate description of events, he was non-violent with his "first one".
So you don’t have to read the article:
Masoli and the driver independently recall that Masoli got out of the vehicle last, and with hesitation, before the victim gave up his wallet, which according to redacted juvenile records reviewed by SI.com, contained $10 cash and a Jamba Juice card. Those same records indicate that Masoli was not the instigator in the robbery and didn’t say anything to the victim. Masoli told police that when he looked inside the wallet as it was being passed around, he was relieved to find it empty.

I was merely explaining that, by definition of the terms, if it is a robbery or an assault, then it is a violent crime. As for burglary, while it does not require a threat of physical violence, it is also considered a very serious crime, because it involves a very strong potential for violence if the burglary is surprised in the act. Burglary is typically punished as severely as robbery for that reason.

I do understand that. While, I disagree with your claim of violence regarding burglary. I believe the majority of burglars would flee way sooner than fight. (Though I have no problem with it being punished similarly as robbery. To not acknowledge their inherent differences, or use the terms interchangeably is a mistake.)
I was never arguing the legal definition of robbery or assault, but the actions that took place. It was asked how someone can steal something and not be a thug.
I was pointing out that thuggery is related to violence, and none of Masoli’s actions described in the SI article were actually violent or threatening – regardless of his charges. (Again, this is off the basis that the article is 100% accurate, which I’m not saying it is.)

I disagree with your claim of violence regarding burglary.
What I have said about burglary is a factual statement of how California law treats that crime.
Exit, Pursued By A Bear
because it involves a very strong potential for violence if the burglary is surprised in the act.
Clearly, I’m not an expert in California law and I don’t doubt you are (I just assume everyone on CGB is a lawyer, except Hydrotech. He’s a tyrannical ruler.). However, I read that quote as your personal assessment of burglary, and in that case, I disagree with the statement that is has a very strong potential for violence.
It also looks like, under the California penal code, punishment for first degree robbery is three, six, or nine years and for first degree burglary, it is two, four or six. So maybe some clarification on that?
Also, I believe the burglary charges were only in Oregon.
it’s spelled "S-H-U-F-R-E-A-K-I-N-H-E-R-O-U-T-M-A-N"
I understood that the assault and the robbery or burglary or whatever it was, were at a California shopping mall.
Exit, Pursued By A Bear
I did make a mistake earlier with my claim that he wasn’t charged with “robbery”, because I was mixing different situations. I apologize for that.
In California, he was charged with robbery, which is classified as a violent crime. His actions, as reported, were not threatening or violent, but he was with other people that were.
The assault charges that were reported on previously were erroneous and in fact, corrected by the original news article reporting this.
Masoli and the driver also stated independently of one another that they didn’t know the guys in the back of the truck as well as they knew each other, and they didn’t know that two of them had committed such robberies before. A snowball of inaccurate reporting as to this last fact is why years later, at the peak of his football fame, Masoli would be described erroneously in several media accounts as having been involved in a series of robberies as a teenager. Confidential sources (and the San Francisco Chronicle) have confirmed that only two of the juveniles present that day were implicated in another incident. Not Masoli.

Assault is defined as putting a person in immediate fear of a physical attack and robbery is defined as the taking of property using a physical attack or the threat of a physical attack. Thus, even in instances where no physical contact occurs, both crimes are considered crimes of violence.

For Rishi, and others wondering how Masoli can get on the field this year, Doctor Saturday has a little explanation
Schad’s source echoed an earlier report by the proprietor of the Ole Miss site Rebel Grove, who said earlier in the evening that Masoli had had already been admitted to UM. That wasn’t the case as of Wednesday night: The university still has to make a formal decision on Masoli’s admission. Then it has to ask for a waiver from Oregon releasing him to play this play this fall. Then it will ask the NCAA to waive a one-year residency requirement to actually get Masoli on the field. (This should be a formality if he’s admitted to a program that isn’t offered at Oregon; hence the restriction to just three options. Both schools offer graduate programs in sociology, Masoli’s major as an undergrad, but Ole Miss also offers a master’s program in social work; Oregon doesn’t. And no, he’s not going to law school.) Then the Rebels have to cross their fingers that Lane County, Ore., elects not to pursue Masoli for violating parole in the suspended license/marijuana arrest that got him booted from Oregon last month.

The one good thing about that film is that it provides a way to determine who actually wrote Romeo & Juliet. All you have to do is play the film at the graves of William Shakespeare, Francis Bacon and the Earl of Oxford, and see which one of them rolls over.
Exit, Pursued By A Bear
I’m a bit ashamed that my favorite is the version with Olivia Hussey…because she was almost falling out of her dress the whole time.
In fairness, I saw it in jr high – it was a definite eye-opener.
Irate Toothmonger - Will get all up in your business for food
I also saw that one in when I was in junior high school, with a bunch of girlfriends. It was on a double feature with Dr. Zhivago. I don’t think any of us stopped crying for the whole five hours.
The Zeffirelli (i.e., Olivia Hussey) version is the best Romeo and Juliet on film. But that’s because there aren’t any really good ones.
Exit, Pursued By A Bear
That’s the Franco Zefferelli (sp?) version, right? I watched that in high school, and I like it for being the prototypical version. And what I like about the Leo version is that it’s such a contrast. Purists are always gonna hate on attempts at modernization, but I thought it worked well in this instance.
My favorite modern Shakespeare is the recent Richard the Third, which I think is the best movie of that play.
Am I known as Cugel the Clever for nothing?
The Ian McKellen version? I don’t like it all that much primarily because the play is absolutely cut to ribbons. Richard III runs about four hours uncut, and that film is 1 hour 45 minutes. I don’t have a problem with cutting Shakespeare plays down — even Shakespeare did it — but when you cut that dramatically, you are losing way too much. I prefer the Olivier version which is cut, but not so much (it runs about 2 hours, 40 minutes). Olivier made a very unfortunate decision to eliminate the character of Queen Margaret altogether, and the film has a horrible performance by Claire Bloom as Lady Anne, but makes up for it with Ralph Richardson’s wonderful Duke of Buckingham and, of course, my boy Larry, whom I adore.
I did see McKellen do Richard III on stage in San Francisco when he did a tour in the early 1990s. It was nearly uncut and utterly brilliant. It literally gave me chills at a couple of points. I went to see it three times.
Exit, Pursued By A Bear
Well… I’m glad you got to see McKellen in person, I certainly haven’t. But I disagree about RIII, since I think it works great as a movie, but it would better enjoyed if not compared to the play, just view as an original work of art.
Also, I don’t know why I don’t go to see more Shakespeare plays, I always really enjoy them, but its been a few years since I been to Orinda, or anywhere else for that matter.
Side note: The Shakespeare episode of Doctor Who was brilliant. Lots of fun.

Am I the only one here who gets annoyed by mass texts? Texting is a completely valid form of communication, but is it really that difficult to personalize texts or limit your communication pipeline to a few people?
Mass texting is fine when organizing events (e.g. “Hey, I’m hosting a barbeque on Sunday, come stop by”) or trying to figure out plans (e.g. “I’m trying to plan another Vegas trip, you in?”), but beyond that, calm down.
Mass texting out your entire contacts list “omg I’m so drunk” or “I just met Akon” is just a cry for attention. Text a couple people, sure, or if you really care, update your twitter or facebook status. Hell, I knew a chick that used to mass text out “I miss u” just for the attention she’d get from the responses.

I'll drink to this!
As we all know, drinking is good for you. But they’re finding out it is REALLY good for you.
Moderate drinking has been linked to a variety of health benefits, including a reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. According to a new study, drinking alcohol may also ease the pain of — and lower the risk of developing — rheumatoid arthritis, a potentially crippling autoimmune disorder.I think the moral of the story is life is too short for crappy beer. And that I’m going to be impervious to rheumatoid arthritis.

However, the number of days per month a person drinks doesn’t provide the best picture of alcohol intake, says Eric Matteson, M.D., the chair of the rheumatology department at the Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Minnesota. “How much a person drinks is probably more relevant than how often,” he says. “There are people who binge drink quite a lot but may not drink every day, whereas someone who drinks wine every day is considered a frequent user.”
If you don’t drink every day, you need to binge regularly to make up the difference. Doctor’s orders.

Not really well-defined in the study or in the report, actually.
Maxwell and his colleagues asked 873 people with rheumatoid arthritis and roughly 1,000 people without it to estimate how many days in the past month they’d had at least one drink. The researchers measured the severity of rheumatoid arthritis symptoms using questionnaires, joint X-rays, and blood tests that gauge inflammation.
Sorry to say…this looks like a really poor study design.(imho) And as a report it’s closer to tabloid journalism than it is actual news. Maybe one of the CGB super scientists can give a better overview.

So you’re saying the guidelines were written by soft southerners?
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
Big articvle on Masoli in SI:
Jeremiah Masoli is asking you to open your mind, to consider the possibility that, regardless of what you’ve read or heard, he is not a thug. That would be an easier sell, of course, if he hadn’t spent nearly three months in a juvenile facility in 2005 for robbery; if he hadn’t pled guilty in March of this year to burglarizing a fraternity house; if his career as the starting quarterback — and a potential Heisman contender — at Oregon hadn’t ended last month after police found him driving with marijuana in his car.
But here’s the thing with Masoli: there are always extenuating circumstances. Less than 48 hours after Oregon coach Chip Kelly kicked him off the team, Masoli is sitting in the living room of his parents’ cramped row house in Daly City, Calif., a working-class suburb of San Francisco, trying to explain those circumstances. His hair, once a flowing mane, is trimmed short, befitting a young man eager to rebuild his image. The dual-threat quarterback who specialized in mystifying ball fakes is wrestling nervously with a throw pillow as he asks those who have judged him to look beyond his police record and consider his personal account of the events that led to his downfall — an account that brings to light a number of previously unknown details, many of them backed up by police and court records, eyewitness accounts, and other sources.

IMG to become bigger player in campus athletics (this affects Cal, though I don’t know how…)
The company announced Wednesday it has agreed to acquire ISP Sports, which has been one of IMG’s primary competitors for the right to represent major-college athletics programs in corporate sponsorsorship and local radio and TV deals.
…
ISP’s client list includes Alabama, Notre Dame (for football), Georgia, Arizona State, Auburn, California, Duke, Georgia Tech, South Carolina, UCLA, Virginia Tech and Washington.
Cal has licensed their sponsorship sales and radio inventory (maybe TV too? not sure) to ISP. So when people complain about the Odwalla Races – they really should be complaining about ISP. Well, the Cal Ath. Dept. approves those, so maybe Cal Athletics is also to be complained about.

Cleveland’s owner got fined for statements less inflammatory than this. Is Stern gonna drop the hammer? Can he? This is really bizarre.

City Center is really quite nice. A little something for everyone. Mandarin Oriental pool is small, but classy.

Sadly, no. More vendor parties tonight, then flying on to the next leg of my journey tomorrow before flying home on Sunday.

Given that Leonardo Dicaprio is, by your standards, too ugly, you may be waiting a long, long, long time.

YO’s transcript of Tedford/MikeyMo at Media day
Pretty standard stuff from Tedford. We’re going to be multiple and aggressive on defense…balanced on offense.

The Broncos have announced that quarterback Tim Tebow, a first-round draft pick for the team, has agreed to terms on a 5-year deal.
Tebow, the 25th pick in the NFL draft, will get a five-year contract worth $11.25 million, according to two NFL sources. The money is less than the $11.8 million total value Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant got as the No. 24 overall pick.
Tebow’s guarantee will be $8.7 million, higher than the $8.3 million guarantee Bryant received.

[Lute] Olson was not reprimanded.
The school noted in its report that the coach was dealing with a number of health issues at the time and it was later revealed by his physician and family that he had suffered a stroke that affected his decision-making abilities.
Olson took a leave of absence in the 2007-08 season and had intended to return for 2008-09 but announced his retirement after attending a few practices.
The NCAA found that Olson failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance at the university but decided against sanctioning the 75-year-old former coach because he is retired and has health issues.
“The committee determined that the coach had retired and any punishment in that regard would be inappropriate,” Dee said.

Advice needed
Wedding in St Helena -
Which hotel should I say in to maintain my balla balla image?
The Meritage Resort
River Terrance Inn
Redwood Inn
Westin Verasa Napa
Candle Light Inn
Vineyard Country Inn
Wedding is in St Helena. The Meritage Resort might be the call here. Any other ideas?

What about Yountville? You’d be closer to the wedding, and I think you get serious balla points for not being in downtown Napa.
In particular, Napa Valley Lodge, Vintage Inn, Yountville Inn and Hotel Luca are very nice. And if Ms. Lillies is with you, you’d get mega-points for Bouchon for breakfast.
True balla ballas don’t make hotel reservations. Because they know they’ll have places to stay over……if you know what I mean and I think you do.
