While I appreciate the Band’s spirit, somehow I don’t think a billboard with them on it would be the most attractive billboard… I think The Cannon, Memorial Stadium, and The Spirit would probably best represent us to the general public. The Axe could be good on a billboard too. Preferably on El Camino Real in Palo Alto or something.
I’m glad to see something beyond “The Band” winning.
I like the team more, but the Cannon would be great.

Two Olympians join field hockey coaching staff
Shellie Onstead gave her California staff a decidedly U.S. national team feel when the Golden Bears head coach announced on Friday that she hired 2008 Olympians Carrie Lingo and Lauren Crandall as assistant coaches. Onstead has worked with the U.S. players the past few years in her role as an assistant coach on the national team. In addition, Onstead announced that former assistant coach Kelly Knapp will remain at Cal as a volunteer assistant coach.
Crandall and Lingo have joined Cal on limited appointments. They will work in Berkeley until the end of the season, when they will rejoin the national team at its southern California training facility. Both officially start in early August, though Crandall and Onstead won’t return from the current U.S. trip to Europe until after Aug. 6. An injury forced Lingo, the U.S. captain, to sit out the trip, which includes matches against Spain and England.

Cal golfer Emily Childs wins back to back tournaments

California Golden Bear golfer Emily Childs won back-to-back championships, earning medalist honors at both the Northern California Golf Association Women’s Championships and the California Women’s Championship in consecutive weeks.
Childs opened the month of July competing at the 6th Annual NCGA Women’s Championship, held at the Poppy Hills and Spyglass Hills courses in Pebble Beach, Calif. Childs, who will be a junior next season for the Bears, post a strong first-round three-under 69 at Poppy Hills. She followed with a final-round 78 at Spyglass to finish at two-over, a four-stroke advantage over the second-place finisher.
,,,
Fresh off the victory at the NCGA Championship, Childs went on to compete at the California Women’s Championship, held at Alamaden Golf Course in San Jose July 12-14. After opening with a two-over 74, Childs came back on day two to fire a four-under 68. She closed out the 54-hole tourney with a one-under 71 to put her at -3 and give her a three-stroke margin of victory for the title.

No. 7: Cal. The Bears finished in sixth place in the Pac-10 last season (tied for fifth with USC; lost head-to-head matchup). Is there really any reason to believe they will be better this season? There were only a few bright spots from their disappointing defense, and two of those — defensive end Tyson Alualu and cornerback Syd’Quan Thompson — have taken their talents to the NFL. Meanwhile, the offense looks like it could be a lot like last year — strong running game, suspect passing game.

No. 6: Washington. Yes, the Huskies were much more respectable last season. Yes, Jake Locker is one of the most dynamic and best quarterbacks in the country.
But those who are picking Washington to finish in the upper half of the Pac-10 and even in the preseason rankings may be jumping the gun just a bit.

No. 5: Arizona. It was as late as November last season and the Wildcats controlled their own destiny to win the Pac-10 title. But a visit to Cal derailed those hopes, as the Bears sent Arizona packing with a 24-16 victory. A 44-41 loss in a whale of a game the following week against Oregon put the conference title out of reach, but the Wildcats responded by beating Arizona State and USC — both on the road — to close out the regular season.

Niners Nation Looks at Dashon Goldson
Now here is a hard player to gauge. It would seem a lot have taken a collective drink from the Dashon Goldson kool-aid, which is completely fine. He played well in the second half of the season. Heck, he played better than well. He played like a pretty great safety. But can he continue such play?
Last season, Goldson ended up with two sacks, six passes deflected, four interceptions and three forced fumbles. Not bad, right? But most of them came in the second half of the season. He seemed to struggle a bit early on, but something “clicked” and he started playing seemingly above the level we all thought he could. I mean, we expected an improvement but I don’t think anyone saw that drastic of an improvement.

You know what they say: if in the first inning you don’t succeed enough; in the second, try again.
OK they don’t really say that but that philosophy worked just fine for the A’s offense this afternoon, and Vin Mazzaro was the beneficiary. Staked to a 2-0 lead after Oakland’s first turn at bat, Mazzaro gave it right back on a long two-run homerun to left by Ramón Castro. But when his teammates pushed across three more runs in the second off Chicago starter Freddy Garcia, the young right-hander made those scores stand up- and then some.

Oh there were baserunners, leads chipped away to precious little, but to Dallas Braden — winning for the first time since his May 9th perfect game — and to the A’s, now two games over .500 and winning series against contenders, it was perfect enough.
The key hits were back-to-back two out, two-run singles in the 2nd by Daric Barton and Kurt Suzuki, the latter of whom added an RBI hit to drive in three for the day. Meanwhile, Braden was outstanding, pitching into the 7th with all his pitches working and shutting down the White Sox after they nicked him for a 1st inning run.

Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) – Travis Ishikawa knocked in the winning run in the 10th inning to lift San Francisco over Arizona, 3-2, to complete a four-game sweep.
Sergio Romo (3-3) hurled a scoreless ninth for the win and Brian Wilson did the same in the 10th to earn his 29th save.
Buster Posey continued his hot streak by going 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles and drove in a run to extend his hitting streak to 18 games. Aubrey Huff also drove in a run for the Giants, who have won eight of 10 overall.

McCC thinks the Giants might have won this one in spite of themselves. And because of Posey.
There was no way the Giants should have won that game. Two quick points:
• As often as I disagree with Bruce Bochy, there’s no way he called for a straight steal in the top of the ninth. Either Travis Ishikawa or Nate Schierholtz missed a sign. There’s absolutely no way that a manager runs out of a situation in which a sac fly can take the lead in the ninth inning. Not a single manager, no matter how daft, drunk, or stupid would call for a straight steal. If it was a busted hit-and-run, well, that would have been a silly, unnecessary risk. But it wouldn’t have been criminal. I refuse to believe that it was a straight steal.
• When Bruce Bochy takes his best hitter out for a pinch-runner who isn’t that much faster, he’s playing for a tiny subset of possibilities — plays that Eli Whiteside can score on that Buster Posey can’t. I’ll assume that this subset exists. But it’s not a big one. It’s not worth the risk of losing your cleanup hitter in extra innings. Someone needs to work up a Venn diagram on this and get it to Bochy.
Bah. No time for quibbles like that. The San Francisco Poseys just poseyed their way in to a posey of a sweep.
Yes, I am an Old Blue. Now get off my lawn.

When I look at the Marlins roster, it just makes me irritated at the Padres. Seriously. The Marlins are the team that was supposed to have a keg of good young pitching on tap. The Marlins were supposed to have young, competent hitters all throughout the lineup. Then I look at their roster, and both things are still true. Fourth place and hovering around .500 for most of the season. The Padres have one guy with an on-base percentage above .330 in the starting lineup. Even accounting for Petco National Park, that’s hard to believe. First place, and they haven’t lost for 24 straight games. I don’t get it.

Trade deadline look at A’s and Giants
The Oakland A’s and San Francisco Giants have been two of the hottest teams in baseball in the month of July. The A’s are 9-3 since being swept by the Yankees and are siting 7.5 games back of the Rangers with a lot of baseball left to be played. Since losing their July opening series at Colorado, the Giants have gone 15-3 and climbed all the way to a mere 3 games back of the Padres.
What does all this mean? Well, we’re fast approaching the 2010 MLB Trade Deadline, which is always active around the league. The A’s and the Giants find themselves in intriguing positions. Both are certainly not out of their respective races, and both are playing extremely well. And yet, it’s rather difficult to forecast whether either will be a buyer or seller as Sunday July 31 approaches.

Cal alum Charlie Wi shoots final round 66 to vault into T-4 finish at Canadian Open. Charlie won $165,750. Charlie is 45th in the FedEx Cup points standings and has 9 top 25 finishes (3 top 10s) in 18 starts this season.
Another Cal alum, Peter Tomasulo, also shot a final round 66 at the Nationwide Tour event in Columbus, Ohio. Peter finished in a T-17 after starting the day at T-48. He remains 8th in the Nationwide Tour money list.

Much like Chad Billingsley earlier in the week, Clayton Kershaw came through for the Dodgers when the absolutely had to have their starter pitch deep into the game, leading the Dodgers to a 1-0 victory over the Mets. Kershaw pitched eight scoreless innings, and would have pitched the ninth had his spot in the batting order not come up in the eighth inning.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Angels of Orange County pick up a pitcher for the playoff run
Angels acquire Dan Haren from Arizona for Joe Sanuders and 3 minor leaguers.
Tony Reagins is such a tease. First he exasperates the fanbase with a pointless trade for Alberto Callaspo, then he pulls off this stunner, both in the same weekend. This is the trade he meant to do last August when he acquired Scott Kazmir: buy low on a starting pitcher, sell high on a couple of promising prospects. Obviously the little detail about Kazmir being broken wrecked that plan, but Dan Haren’s tough season is merely a statistical fluctuation. Forget 2010 for the moment and consider the near future, the middle-term. We can’t know what the Angels gave up in Pat Corbin and (presumably) Tyler Skaggs for another five years, but we can talk about the next two seasons.

TROJAN INFIGHT!!!!
[1]
“I’m very disappointed in Lane Kiffin’s approach to this. Typically speaking, when coaches are interested in hiring or discussing potential employment from coaches on respective staffs there is a courtesy call made from the head coach or athletic director indicating there is an interest in talking to the assistant. So I am very disappointed in the lack of professionalism on behalf of Lane.‘’
—Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher, to the Tennessean’s Jim Wyatt. Fisher’s running backs coach, Kennedy Pola, was heisted Saturday by USC coach Kiffin (to be the Trojans’ offensive coordinator) less than a week before Titans training camp convenes.
Kiffin responded by saying he reached out to Pola on Friday to see if he had any interest in the job. If you believe the first contact between Kiffin and Pola was Friday, well, you’re not really in touch with anything on this planet.
What exacerbates the problem of ripping off a coach under contract six days before training camp is that USC product Fisher is a Trojan through and through. Fisher has friends throughout pro and college football and now he’s going to be in the position of telling them all: Be leery of Lane Kiffin.
I mean, how many more stupid things does Lane Kiffin have to do before he realizes you don’t win by knifing good people in the back?
Pretty soon Kiffin’s going to be so unpopular in the NFL that, should he burn his college bridges completely, only Al Davis will hire him in the pros.
Just a guess. But he may have already burned that bridge.

UC GSIs dont get paid as much:
As the University of California tries to absorb massive cuts in state funding, a recent UC report shows that without addressing the many financial challenges graduate students face, the academic quality of the entire UC system could slowly erode.
The report, as well as a recent survey of UC Berkeley graduate students, found many concerns about graduate students’ level of compensation, working conditions, child services and affordable housing.

Campus trying to conserve water:
Amid global concern that water will one day become a scarce and precious resource, UC Berkeley’s Office of Sustainability is attempting to overcome technical complexities and financial strains in order to implement programs projected to save up to 53 million gallons of water and $4 million.
In response to consecutive years of drought, Joanna Zhang, a water associate for the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Sustainability, published a report in March detailing the campus’s current water conservation plans and goals. The report used and expanded upon data from UC Berkeley alumna Jubilee Daniels’ 2005 master’s thesis, which has inspired some campus water conservation initiatives.
One large-scale project is the replacement of faucet aerators to reduce the rate of water flow – an inexpensive way to reduce water use because aerators are donated by East Bay Municipal Utilities District (EBMUD), leaving only the cost of labor, said Lisa McNeilly, director of the Office of Sustainability.

Controversy over DNA Testing:
Amid ongoing controversy surrounding a UC Berkeley program asking incoming students to submit DNA samples for testing, a state bill has been introduced that, if passed, would prevent CSU schools from requesting genetic material from students and would urge UC schools to do so as well.
The bill was originally introduced by a former assemblyman in December 2008 to address the needs of English learners in state schools, but, in a procedure called “gut and amend,” California State Assemblyman Chris Norby, R-Fullerton, rewrote the bill on June 24 in a last-minute effort to ban non-medical related requests for DNA at CSUs.
The new bill is a response to a campus program, launched by the College of Letters and Science in May, that sends cotton swabs to incoming students and offers to test their DNA samples for their ability to tolerate alcohol, metabolize lactose and absorb folic acid.

AC Transit employees deplyoing a sick out:
Hundreds of AC Transit employees have not been showing up for work each day throughout the past week since a new contract took effect July 18, resulting in increased delays for riders and furthering disputes between the agency and union workers.
The daily absences of about 200 employees – approximately 20 percent of all employees – has become the next phase in an ongoing battle between the agency and some 1,750 Amalgamated Transit Union Local 192 workers. AC Transit officials have deemed the absences a “sick-out,” but union workers insist the action has not been organized and is the result of “impossible” work structures under the new contract.
AC Transit officials have said the new three-year contract does not significantly vary from the old one, but union workers say the new contract forces bus operators to work difficult hours, does not allow them to choose bus routes as the old contract did and forces them to drive routes for which they have not received training.

Pyongyang stomps its feet and holds its breath:
yongyang has strongly protested the exercises, calling them a provocation and threatening retaliation. In flourishes of rhetoric typical of the regime, it vowed to respond with a “sacred war” and a “powerful nuclear deterrence.”
“Should the U.S. imperialists and (South Korea) finally ignite a new war of aggression … (North Korea) will mobilize the tremendous military potential including its nuclear deterrence for self-defense and thus wipe out the aggressors,” North Korea’s defense chief, Kim Yong Chun, said in Pyongyang on Monday, according to the official Korean Central News Agency.
Kim also reiterated the country’s threat to bolster its nuclear deterrence. North Korea often cites the U.S. military presence in the region, with nuclear-powered warships like the George Washington, as a key reason behind its drive to build atomic weapons.
Pyongyang’s latest rhetoric was seen by most as bluster: South Korea’s Defense Ministry reported no significant moves by the North Korean military since the maneuvers began Sunday.
But the threats carry extra weight following the sinking of the Cheonan, which dramatically intensified tensions on the Korean peninsula. The ship sank near the Koreas’ western sea border, a scene of three bloody inter-Korean maritime battles in the past decade, most recently in November.

Wilner recycles:
Another way to arrange divisions is to split the natural rivals (for instance, Cal in one division, Stanford in the other) but with the assurance that they would play every year.
This format, which has become known as the "Zipper Plan," would assure every school of a game against USC or UCLA every year and a trip to Southern California every two years. "We’re looking at several ‘Zipper’ options," Scott said.
One variation, the "California Zipper," would place one Bay Area school and one L.A. school with the Oregons and Washingtons in the North and one Bay Area school and one L.A. school with Utah, Colorado and the Arizona schools in the South.
Critics of the "zipper" arrangement believe the natural rivals must be paired together, but the concept is gaining traction within league circles. Bowlsby said the schools Stanford plays every year are more important to him than divisional alignment. In other words, he’s fine with Cal being in a different division as long as the Big Game is played every year.
Bellotti said he favors the "zipper" format, and believes it can be tweaked to preserve longtime rivalries. He suggested that in an eight-game conference schedule, teams would play five games within their division and could include one or two traditional games on an annual basis from outside their division.
"Either way, they’re going to have to protect the rivalries," Bellotti said. "No way in the world could Oregon not play Oregon State or Washington. Fiscally, it would not make sense. Just like Cal wants to play Stanford and USC and UCLA."
Regardless of the league’s shape, Cal, Stanford, USC and UCLA have played each other every year since 1936 (excluding World War II years) — and they want the tradition to continue.
Pairing the California quartet in the South with the Arizona schools would solve the issue, but the core problem would still exist because the more games between the California schools, the fewer opportunities for everyone else to play USC and UCLA.
The reality, in Scott’s words, is this: "Not every team is going to be thrilled."
An interesting idea is the conference sharing the TV money amongst everyone.

New Ford Explorer will get same mileage as a V-6 Camry
Here’s a bold claim: The new Ford Explorer with the Ecoboost turbocharged 2-liter engine will have fuel efficiency on par with a Toyota Camry V-6.
Although Ford hasn’t disclosed yet its predicted fuel mileage figures for the 2011 Explorer, a V-6 Camry gets 20 miles a gallon in the city, 29 on the highway, the Environmental Protection Agency says.
The thing is, the Explorer is going to come standard with a V-6, but the 4-cylinder that rivals the Camry in fuel efficiency is going to be an option that you have to pay extra for. That is, you have to pay more money for a less powerful engine.

Leaked intelligence documents covering a six year period paint bleaker picture of Afghanistan war
A six-year archive of classified military documents made public on Sunday offers an unvarnished, ground-level picture of the war in Afghanistan that is in many respects more grim than the official portrayal.
The secret documents, released on the Internet by an organization called WikiLeaks, are a daily diary of an American-led force often starved for resources and attention as it struggled against an insurgency that grew larger, better coordinated and more deadly each year.
…
The documents — some 92,000 reports spanning parts of two administrations from January 2004 through December 2009 — illustrate in mosaic detail why, after the United States has spent almost $300 billion on the war in Afghanistan, the Taliban are stronger than at any time since 2001.

Interesting article on wikiLeaks [Guardian]
Assange, who describes what he does as a mix of hi-tech investigative journalism and advocacy, foresees a day when any confidential document, from secret orders that allow our own governments to spy on us down to the bossy letters from your children’s school, will be posted on WikiLeaks for the whole world to see. And that, Assange believes, will change everything.
But there are those who fear that WikiLeaks is more like an intelligence service than it would care to admit – a shadowy, unaccountable organisation that tramples on individual privacy and other rights. And like so many others who have claimed to be acting in the name of the people, there are those who fear it risks oppressing them.
Second paragraph THIS.
I don’t trust WikiLeaks to responsibly manage the information it finds any more than I trust the world’s powerful organizations in the first place. I have huge concerns about the privacy implications of what they are doing.
I agree with that. But beyond privacy concerns I think they also have an ideological agenda that they are advancing and using the reports that they get to advance that.
The The is above making sense.
I agree with the concerns, but I also think that the public is kept way more in the dark about the activities of our own government than we should be. I think the concerns balance out.

I can understand the view that the government keeps things from the public, but at a certain point isn’t that necessary for U.S. and global protection? If we publish everything the government ever does, doesn’t that effectively handcuff any way to win a military, economic or other conflict?
I think the concerns balance out.
Is an organization that is just as if not more secretive than the government and gearing their releases solely for the political impact (rather than goals that a government might have such as protection, proprietary knowledge, time sensitivity of information) the best way to balance that out?
The The is above making sense.

No.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Is that a no to the question or disagreement? This is very un rags like. Usually you’re well rationed and explain what you say.
The The is above making sense.
Of course not. I didn’t say that this is the best way. Obviously there are legitimate reasons for the government to keep some things secret for national security reasons. Some information needs to be kept secret for good reason, for example something that might expose troop movements or reveal the identities of intelligence assets. However, I do believe that actions such as the covering up of war crimes, or keeping the public in the dark about how the war is really going, are not is desirable or acceptable in a democratic society, by a government that is supposed to be accountable to the people. How can it be accountable when such basic and important facts are kept from us?
It is also obvious that Wikileaks as an organization isn’t exactly transparent or accountable. However, their credibility is tied to the legitimacy of the information they release. Surely it needs to be taken with a grain of salt and people should consider what agenda might potentially be motivating the release of the documents, but so far, without knowing too much about everything they’ve done, it seems that its track record is pretty good. I think the public is better off for knowing many of the things they have released rather than not knowing it.

Is that a devil you know is better than devil you don’t argument? Given that Wikileaks is established now, they should keep going until they screw up? Haven’t they already compromised some of their legitimacy by their goal of political impact rather than release of their information?
The The is above making sense.
I’m not sure what you mean here. Wikileaks exists, and given that it’s a relatively shadowy, underground, international group with no real accountability, my opinion about what it should do is pretty irrelevant. So far, based on what they’ve released, it seems to me that as a public, on the whole we’re probably better off that they exist than not exist. My opinion is subject to change, of course, based on things they may release in the future.
Would it be better if the government were a lot more transparent, and as long as something didn’t jeopardize national security, let the public know what’s going on? Sure, then there wouldn’t be much point to a group like Wikileaks. Obviously, having a shadowy group with an unknown agenda isn’t ideal, but I think it’s valuable for whistleblowers to have an outlet, and so I don’t think that the government should arrest or kill Assange or try to take down Wikileaks or anything, no.

Well our opinions about most things in the world are irrelevant. I’m just trying to feel out the support you have for them. The amount of support that they’ve gotten is kind of surprising to me, I can appreciate their mission statement, but I don’t think the approach they’ve taken matches with the idea of leaks.
In the “it’s valuable for whistle-blowers to have an outlet” vein, how do you (or anyone else who wants to jump in the conversation) balance that with the potential for compromise of our national security. Even if it is censored by Wikileaks, the information is still encouraged to be released as is, and then an NGO chooses the information to include or remove.
I’m not encouraging the government to kill Assange, but the publications by Wikileaks do seem to me to be on the dangerous side of safeguard.
The The is above making sense.
So here’s a question, what if you take the US out of the equation? I believe when wikileaks was originally founded, one of the main intentions was to expose corrupt governments – mainly in Asia, Africa and the Middle East (I remember reading about this some years ago and double checked using wikipedia, so the actual facts might be hazy)
If its used as a site to release, say secret internal Chinese documents regarding – oh, I don’t know – organ harvesting or weapons sales to North Korea – then how do you view the site?
Well, sure, but what I really meant was that Wikileaks isn’t accountable to us, whereas the government is supposed to be. I share your concerns that they might compromise our national security someday, but wouldn’t you say that they’ve been fairly responsible so far?
Besides, I think that there always have been and always will be leakers and whistleblowers, and even if Wikileaks is a bit more strategic about packaging and marketing its material, it’s mainly just an outlet. In the past, the Pentagon Papers and the Tonkin Gulf fabrication came out without the help of a Wikileaks in that era.
Anyway, like I said, I share your concerns about this group and its agenda and methods, but I’ll spare any outrage until they actually do something that strikes me as hurtful to the country. In the meantime, you’ve spent a lot of time talking about Wikileaks, but you’ve said not a single word about potential war crimes committed by our country that seem to be indicated in some of the leaked material. For example, there’s the helicopter assault video from a few months ago, and I believe there are many reports of the killing of civilians in the latest batch of leaked documents. Does that not concern you at all?

Agree with both Maharg and Scootie. The privacy concerns are a huge deal. Not that I think the government should use secrecy to do whatever it wants, but I don’t like the idea of some unaccountable organization publishing whatever secrets it feels like, particularly with their ideological bent.
Stephen Colbert actually did an awesome interview with Julian Assange that you can see here. WikiLeaks doesn’t just publish pure information, they add their own twist to it.

Tony Hayward gets $900k pension
BP chief executive Tony Hayward will get an immediate annual pension worth about £600,000 ($930,000) when he leaves in October, the BBC has learned.
…
Our business editor said that because Mr Hayward was leaving by mutual agreement rather than being sacked, the BP board felt it had “to honour the terms of its contract with him”.
He will be replaced by American colleague Bob Dudley, the BBC understands, though no formal announcement has yet been made.

They think you took a “cheap shot” at Pete Carroll? I’m impressed. I thought Pete Carroll was so cheap that it would be impossible to take a cheap shot at him.
Exit, Pursued By A Bear
They are right though. It isn’t Carroll’s responsibility to make sure the search is well-intentioned, it’s Seahawks management. He’s not supposed to turn down a $4m contract.
But the piece doesn’t criticize Carroll. It’s criticism of the Seahawks and the Rooney rule. At most, the “shot” at Carroll is the title, which is sort of tongue in cheek more than anything else.
Yes, I am an Old Blue. Now get off my lawn.
Twist, your next article about anything should have titles similar to the following:
“Each year, thousands of people die from starvation and Pete Carroll does nothing to save them” or
“Thousands of murders are committed each year and Pete Carroll sits idly by without doing anything to solve them.”
That would get those USCers all riled up.

Over/Under on Someone Punching Lane Kiffin?
I was reading through the schedule of events for the Pac-10 media days:
Tuesday (New York)
5 p.m. ET: News conference at the Manhattan W Hotel featuring all 10 coaches and the unveiling of new Pac-10 logo and football trailer. Pac-10 QBs will visit Times Square — where the Pac-10 football video will be playing on the Jumbotron — and the Empire State Building.
6 p.m.: Private cocktail reception at W’s “Whiskey Blue” with TV executives, corporate sponsors, former players and other VIPs.
8 p.m.: Coaches eat dinner with ESPN’s “GameDay” crew. Coach spouses will see Broadway musical, “Promises, Promises.”
Wednesday (New York, ESPN)
Morning: Coaches will ring the opening bell at NASDAQ and then conduct East Coast media interviews.
11 a.m.: Bus to ESPN offices in Bristol, Conn., where players and coaches will do interviews on all ESPN platforms.
5 p.m.: Charter flight from New York to Los Angeles; check in Peninsula Beverly Hills Hotel.
Thursday (at Rose Bowl, all times PT)
9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Coach and player group interview session (field)
9:30 a.m. – Introduction and format – Dave Hirsch
9:35 a.m. – Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott
9:45 a.m. – Paul Wulff & DE Kevin Kooyman, Washington State
10:00 a.m. – Dennis Erickson & PK Thomas Weber, Arizona State
10:15 a.m. – Rick Neuheisel & FS Rahim Moore, UCLA
10:30 a.m. – Steve Sarkisian & LB Mason Foster, Washington
10:45 a.m. – Jeff Tedford & LB Mike Mohamed, California
11:00 a.m. – BREAK
11:15 a.m. – Lane Kiffin & QB Matt Barkley, USC
11:30 a.m. – Jim Harbaugh & FB/LB Owen Marecic, Stanford
11:45 a.m. – Mike Riley & RB Jacquizz Rodgers, Oregon State
12 noon – Mike Stoops & QB Nick Foles, Arizona
12:15 p.m. – Chip Kelly & DT Brandon Bair, Oregon
12:30 p.m. – Pac-10 video presentation
12:30-2:30: One-on-one coach/player interviews during luncheon.
5:30 p.m.: Reception at the Fox Network Studios: Joe Buck and Troy Aikman host Pac-10 presentation.
Seems like the coaches will be spending a lot of time together. What is the over/under on Lane Kiffin being punched in the mouth?
Further odds, who’s most likely to punch him?
Harbs.
Tedford’s too classy and disciplined, Sark is actually friends with the guy I think, Erickson’s too old, Neuheezy’s too much of a weasel, Stoops is too clueless, Wulff is from Wazzu so he gets counted out immediately, Riley is too smart, and another violent incident associated with the Oregon football team is the LAST thing Kelly needs.
Harbs, though, is just arrogant and self-important enough to do it, plus he seems to hate USC, and he probably thinks he’s untouchable anyway.

What's CGB legal team's analysis?
TN Titans sue Lane Kiffin
The Titans on Monday filed a lawsuit against the University of Southern Cal and head coach Lane Kiffin for “maliciously” interfering with the contract of running backs coach Kennedy Pola.
The lawsuit was filed in Davidson County Chancery Court and it claims Pola breached his contract with the Titans after being induced by Kiffin. Pola, hired by the Titans in January, was hired by USC over the weekend as the school’s new offensive coordinator.
The lawsuit states "as a result of USC and Kiffin’s tortuous conduct, Tennessee (Titans) football has been damaged in an amount proven at trial.’’
