DBD 7.21.10: Favorite Job
This fall, depending on what happens in my current internship, I will be recruiting for full-time job offers. This is pretty intimidating. The specific area or industry that I land my first job in could shape my career options for the rest of my life. Since this is pretty heavy and scary, I instead want to focus on something more fun - favorite jobs.
Personally, my favorite job was being a counselor at a summer camp. I did it for three summers in high school. The pay was great ($9.50 an hour!) for high school kids. They gave us free lunch, and it was usually outstanding. And, we got paid to play games all day. We had awesome hours, 11-5:30, which let us both sleep in and do stuff at night. And, lastly, I had a few good friends working with me, so the days were never dull. Unfortunately, I doubt I'll find a job this good once I join the "real world," but I can dare to dream!
CGB: What was your favorite job? Bonus points if it's your current job!

Bruce Bochy gets exactly one get-out-of-being-belittled-for-a-stupid-decision card. They don’t come around often, but here you go, skip. Heck, take two. I didn’t think Bochy had the Billy Martin-sized combo of brains and huevos to go out and call Don Mattingly on a technicality. But Bochy found a way to take away the opponent’s morbidly obese rook by pointing out that the king didn’t castle properly. Or something. Awesome.

I’m going to view last night’s result as the karmic payback for the robbery that occurred on Sunday vs. the Mets. I know it’s not the same thing and that, technically, the correct call occurred last night. But thinking of it this way is better for my psyche.

Once again, umpires screw up, and give the Giants an undeserved win.
“In a case where a manager has made his first trip to the mound and then returns the second time to the mound in the same inning with the same pitcher in the game and the same batter at bat, after being warned by the umpire that he cannot return to the mound, the manager shall be removed from the game and the pitcher required to pitch to the batter until he is retired or gets on base. After the batter is retired, or becomes a base runner, then this pitcher must be removed from the game.”

Also, the “trip to the mound” rule is pretty oddly worded. If a trip starts when you cross the foul line into the field of play, and ends when you leave the mound, then how can you start a second trip if you don’t cross the foul line again? That seems like some gray area, to me.

The rule is a lot longer and more elaborate than that. It doesn’t seem clear to me what the correct call is, and also keep in mind the official rulebook isn’t the only thing out there – the umpires have guidelines beyond the official rules they call the game by.
by Missing Barry on Jul 21, 2010 4:53 PM PDT up reply actions
Yes. The quoted “rule” is actually a comment following rule 8.06, which is in its entirety:
8.06 A professional league shall adopt the following rule pertaining to the visit of the manager or coach to the pitcher:
(a) This rule limits the number of trips a manager or coach may make to any one pitcher in any one inning;
(b) A second trip to the same pitcher in the same inning will cause this pitcher’s automatic removal;
© The manager or coach is prohibited from making a second visit to the mound while the same batter is at bat, but
(d) if a pinch-hitter is substituted for this batter, the manager or coach may make a second visit to the mound, but must remove the pitcher.
A manager or coach is considered to have concluded his visit to the mound when he leaves the 18-foot circle surrounding the pitcher’s rubber.
Rule 8.06 Comment:
If the manager or coach goes to the catcher or infielder and that player then goes to the mound or the pitcher comes to him at his position before there is an intervening play (a pitch or other play) that will be the same as the manager or coach going to the mound.
Any attempt to evade or circumvent this rule by the manager or coach going to the catcher or an infielder and then that player going to the mound to confer with the pitcher shall constitute a trip to the mound.
If the coach goes to the mound and removes a pitcher and then the manager goes to the mound to talk with the new pitcher, that will constitute one trip to that new pitcher that inning.
In a case where a manager has made his first trip to the mound and then returns the second time to the mound in the same inning with the same pitcher in the game and the same batter at bat, after being warned by the umpire that he cannot return to the mound, the manager shall be removed from the game and the pitcher required to pitch to the batter until he is retired or gets on base. After the batter is retired, or becomes a base runner, then this pitcher must be removed from the game. The manager should be notified that his pitcher will be removed from the game after he pitches to one hitter, so he can have a substitute pitcher warmed up.
The substitute pitcher will be allowed eight preparatory pitches or more if in the umpire’s judgment circumstances justify.
Note that:
IMPORTANT NOTE
The Playing Rules Committee, at its December 1977 meeting, voted to incorporate the Notes/Case Book/Comments section directly into the Official Baseball Rules at the appropriate places. Basically, the Case Book interprets or elaborates on the basic rules and in essence have the same effect as rules when applied to particular sections for which they are intended.
This arrangement is designed to give quicker access to any written language pertaining to an Official Rule and does not require a reader to refer to different sections of the Official Baseball Rules book in considering the application of a particular rule. Case Book material is printed in smaller type than the rule language.
Anyways, it’s not entirely clear to me whether the comments/case book/approved rulings are suggested interpretations given a specific circumstance or are the required interpretations.
Today's the day the teddy bears have their picnic.
Once again they give the Giants an undeserved victory?!? They stole one from the giants just 3 days ago!
Also, frankly I think the Giants were going to win even if Mattingly hadn’t screwed that up. Broxton loaded the bases all on his own and was pitching very poorly and with diminished velocity. With only one out the Giants were very likely to score at least one, if not two or three runs.
But you can blame the umps if you want.

Yi was first, but by Milwaukee. The Nets traded Richard Jefferson for him. Which might have been a good move from a chemistry standpoint since there’s no way Devin Harris would have become the player that he did had RJ still been around and fighting with Vince for shots.

Anthony Randolph was a good pick at the time. Curry. Monta was looking very promising as recently as 2008. Guys like Azubuike, Cj Watson, Reggie Wililams and Anthony Morrow have all come out of nowhere to be solid players – basically, they’ve all become the very upper limit of what we could possibly hope Jeremy Lin ever reaches…..
I mean, yeah, there are way more reasons than that it sucks to be a Warriors fan, but I just don’t see all the excitement for Jeremy Lin. He’s a crappy player who happens to be Asian. We’ve had a lot better things than that to get excited about….
by Missing Barry on Jul 21, 2010 11:24 AM PDT up reply actions
Solid
That’s the thing there. Fans don’t get excited about a D-League pickup who works his way into the rotation. Fans get excited about superstars. Failing that, they’ll get excited about connections they may have with the player. In this case, he’s both Asian and a local kid. I had the chance to watch him in high school against Drew Gordon’s team. That little connection gives me an extra rooting interest.
True, that’s a reason I rooted for Devon Hardin to make it (played against him in HS), but I guess I just don’t see why the Asian part is such a big deal? Local is good, I’m just getting the impression it’s really about the “Asian”….
by Missing Barry on Jul 21, 2010 11:41 AM PDT up reply actions
I actually do get excited about D-Leaguers or 2nd rounders that work their way into the rotation. But, I’m a bit contrary. I’m not a big fan of “superstars” who put up huge numbers at the expense of playing good ball. For instance, I really don’t like Monta’s game. Generally, I find the so-called “scrubs” play a more fundamental game, hustle, and care about the outcome. Many of the veterans don’t really dial it in until the playoffs.
And, I’m a crappy player who happens to be Asian. For me, it’s cool to see a local Asian-American kid get a shot with his home-town team. I suppose it’s hard to relate to, if you’re not Asian…but we love bball despite not really having the genes for it. (height/speed) This is the first American-born Asian to have a shot at the league and he’s a guard. (not counting Rex Walters) Kind of a big deal. We just don’t have enough guys who both have the athletic genes and the motivation/support to play enough to be competitive at the highest level.

I agree with the first part – Monta didn’t play winning basketball last year despite big per game numbers. I don’t like those players, either. I don’t think it’s fair to say lesser NBA players have a more fundamental game or care about the outcome more than real superstars. Many superstars are as good as they are for those exact reasons – from Duncan to Nash to Paul to Deron Williams to Gasol, etc. Those guys are as good as they are precisely because they care so much they work that hard, and they’re incredibly fundamental players. Even guys with supereme physical ability (Lebron, Wade, Howard, etc) set themselves miles apart from some of their other incredibly blessed peers by working harder and playing better ball. A guy like Kobe used to be a top athlete, but has worked incredibly hard to get to where he is (now that he’s no longer an elite athlete) because of how much he cares. I guess I just don’t like that criticism. The true superstars do care, and do play very fundamental basketball. That said, you’re probably right about the hustle – on a day to day basis, the guy who’s job is on the line, or the guys who are only playing because of the less talented group of players (which is a bigger population than the more talented group), you get selection bias where only the big hustlers make it….well, they’re probably going to end up hustling more for a variety of reasons.
by Missing Barry on Jul 21, 2010 12:18 PM PDT up reply actions
That’s why I said “many of the veterans.” I made no mention of superstars. I agree with you that those guys are special for a reason.
Unfortunately, the Warriors have had a lot of guys who have been really hard to cheer for over the past few years. The guy who was closest to “star” status, Baron Davis, obviously mailed it in on more than one occasion. But, I’m hopeful that they continue to build around Curry. Udoh is reportedly a solid guy and a hard worker…The same goes for David Lee. Monta may still be okay with the right coaching…Time will tell, I guess.
Irate Toothmonger - Will get all up in your business for food
Yeah, I agree with your take. The only Warriors it’s been fun to root for (other than JRich and one year of Monta) were guys who you had to let yourself enjoy their “bad boy” personality – Davis, Jack, Barnes, etc. Monta’s turned into that, too. And all along, you just knew it wasn’t going to last – eventually, Baron was going to turn into the unmotivated coach-hating disaster he normally plays, Jack was going to do something etc. At least Curry seems to have everything you’d want in a likable guy. Lee should also be good, I’m very concerned about how he’ll fit onto this team, though, given lack of defensive ability. I hate the Udoh pick. :\
I’m holding out hope for Wright, though. Most importantly….new owners!

I really wish we had gone with Greg Monroe. No knock on Udoh since we haven’t had a chance to see what he can/can’t do.

Like you said, new owners!
Irate Toothmonger - Will get all up in your business for food
I would have liked Monroe or Aminu, and think I might have been able to talk myself into liking someone like Paul George (I don’t know anything about him and didn’t find anything out since we didn’t draft him). More than anything, I hate the idea of drafting a 23 year old. The older a guy is when you pick him, on average, the less good he ends up being. 23 year olds aren’t expected to improve very much, and picking a guy that high in the draft who’s not a big time impact player already AND isn’t likely to improve a ton…..ugh. Give me the 19 year old.

It’s the last time Cohan/Rowell/Riley/Nelson get to screw us over, I hope. I’m really curious to see who they get as the new GM/Coach. If it’s Dunleavy, just shoot me now.
Irate Toothmonger - Will get all up in your business for food
I was a bit disappointed that Ellison didn’t win. Especially since rumor had it Jerry West might be willing to accept a role in our org. But still, these guys AREN’T Cohan, which makes them great in my book! Plus they (or at least one of them) have been season ticket holders for a while, so they do actually care about our team. I’m interested to see who they hire, too. As an aside, I really want some new Warriors gear for the new logo, but I’m waiting for the sale to be finalized. Screw Cohan!
by Missing Barry on Jul 21, 2010 3:24 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, I really liked the idea of Ellison at the helm with West as one of his key advisors.
But, Avi talked me off the cliff. Like you said, they’re not Cohan. I like the fact that Lacob has been a season ticket holder, is local, has been successful (even if he represents some truly evil organizations), and seems to know something about basketball.
Irate Toothmonger - Will get all up in your business for food
My only reaction to this is ‘A guard from Harvard gets a contract and Jerome barely gets a 2nd glance?!?’
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Sadly, Jerome didn’t play his way into contention with his performance in the summer league. If people had doubts before, they probably have more now, especially with the lack of 3-point production.
He really struggled with running the offense. I think he was conflicted between taking over and trying to act like a true point. This affected his confidence and he never got into a rhythm. Also, he had a number of those careless turnovers that we all used to cringe at. The commentators mentioned that at his size, it was really tough to get proper passing angles vs. NBA-quality size and speed.
Irate Toothmonger - Will get all up in your business for food

Flemer, Semien and Krist Selected for Northwoods League All-Star Game [Men’s Baseball]
Sophomores Matt Flemer, Marcus Semien and Chadd Krist are representing the California baseball program in fine fashion this summer as the three Golden Bear standouts have been selected to play in the Northwoods League All-Star Game tonight (July 20) at Carson Park in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
Flemer has been outstanding both on the mound and at plate for the La Crosse (Wisc.) Loggers and will be representing the South Division squad. The right-hander is 6-0 with a 1.25 ERA and has 36 strikeouts in 43.1 innings. He only has seven walks in eight appearances (six starts) and opponents are only batting .191 against him. At the plate, Flemer is hitting .320 (8-for-25) with a double, home run and six RBI. This past spring, he was 2-3 with a 4.83 ERA and four saves for Cal, finishing seventh in the Pac-10 in saves.
For those who didn’t see the news yesterday, Mike Garrett is out as u$c AD. Replaced by Pat Haden. Doc Saturday’s Take:
Haden is considered a much more likable, accessible guy. (He’s already made a popular first hire, too, tabbing former USC teammate John McKay Jr., son of their legendary coach, as assistant A.D.) With brand-new coaches toiling under heavy restrictions at both major programs, he’ll certainly be given an extended honeymoon: From an administrative perspective, there’s nowhere to go but up.
BN dons their morality police uniforms, aghast at comparisons to the Village People
Making reactive (but insufficient) changes now doesn’t change the systematic cheating that gave Trojans unfair advantage for years. So it NCAA would be foolish if it is actually impressed by moves that are too little too late.
If Pat Haden and the new Trojan President is really intent on making a sincere statement about their commitment to bringing some kind of integrity to a program (that has never cared about it), they would drop the bogus appeal. Until then talk is a little cheap. Then again when it comes to Trogans [ sic ], the splashy words about integrity are always just that … talk.
Maradona to stay on with the Argentine national team. His sideline demeanor does make me laugh…

Senate extends jobless benefits [NY Times]
Minutes after Carte P. Goodwin was sworn in as the new Democratic senator from West Virginia to replace the late Robert C. Byrd, the Senate voted 60 to 40 to break a partisan logjam and end debate over the jobless pay, overriding Republican objections that the $34 billion cost of the additional compensation should not be added to the deficit.
"One vote made a difference today for millions of Americans who have been out of work waiting for their unemployment benefits," Senator Jeanne Shaheen, Democrat of New Hampshire, said about Mr. Goodwin’s arrival to cast his decisive vote.

The damage was done in the first two innings, and he was helped by a handful of shoddy defensive plays. He settled down rather nicely after that, and he did manage to strike out six of the twenty four batters he faced. And, in the land of the injury watch, it’s worth noting that he threw fifteen breaking pitches tonight, and for the most part, they were sharp.
But you know what? I’ll take it if it means the A’s are .500 again.

INCEPTION SPOILER INCEPTION SPOILER INCEPTION SPOILER INCEPTION SPOILER
After reading a lot of message boards for the last couple hours (honestly that movie has made me think more than any other movie I have ever seen), this is my conclusion:
The very idea of the movie is that you cannot draw a conclusion either way as the two main ending possibilities are equally correct when you examine most of the evidence (which I won’t detail here):
Either (very simplified)
1. Cobb’s “Inception” incurs him to take the “leap of faith” with his wife into the everlasting dreamworld they created together in their minds, and in the end he is “still dreaming.” The top keeps spinning.
or
2. Cobb’s new life after he found Saito in limbo and they killed themselves to awake on the plane and Cobb reunited in the real world with his children and wife dead. He walks away from the spinning top, (his wife’s dreamworld,)
and the “Inception” is the rejection of the concept of her dreamworld itself.
In the end, there are two possible worlds you can be in: “up” the staircase or “down.” “Dream” or “Real.” Does it matter? The more important part is, with no entry and no frame of reference, how did you get on the staircase in the first place?

…Inception.

INCEPTION SPOILERS
On possibility # 2, don’t forget that the top did begin to wobble… it’s only a little noticeable. I didn’t catch it upon watching it the first time.
As mentioned prior, how you view the ending could be seen as a “glass half full/glass half empty” type deal.
7
INCEPTION SPOILER
the top falling or not falling at the end is not any indication of whether Cobb is dreaming or not. It is not his totem, it is Mal’s.
INCEPTION SPOILER
But he knows how it’s weighted, so it doesn’t matter whose it is.
Of course, if it’s his dream, then it can still topple.
7
wouldn’t that go against the whole only-you-can-touch/use-your-own-totem premise?
regardless, none of this makes me feel better about C-Mart =(
INCEPTION SPOILER
The reason that you can only touch your own totem is exactly that… if someone else knew how your totem worked, they could contruct a dream world in which it would work the same way and then you’d think you’re in reality when you’re in a dream.
7
INCEPTION SPOILER
ie we presume that Cobb took Mal’s totem from that safe. What we don’t know is whether the totem in the end is his or hers, whether it falls (wobbling aside), or in the end whether Cobb accepts Mal’s world or the “real” world. …or whether it matters, which is my contention.
I think the point is that reality is what we perceive it to be. Since the story is the same, the only difference is how we perceive it. Is it all Cobb’s dream? It could be. Is it all reality? It could be as well. It just depends on whether we go up or down the “staircase.”

INCEPTION SPILLER
I’m not sure that he ever had his own totem. I thought it was always Mal’s
You are correct in that we have no correct answer as to whether or not the whole film took place in his head or whether it is reality as we know it (in that if he dies, he’s dead; there is no waking up, no limbo, etc)
Also, it took me a while to understand how Cobb planted the inception in Mal’s head; it was apparnetly by spinning the forever-spinning totem in her safe in the dream-world that changed everything
7
INCEPTION SPOILER
Yeah, the idea is that Mal thought her world (when in fact it was limbo) was real. Because of this, and the fact that it was her dream, her totem was falling down. However, by Cobb making her totem spin indefinitely, she began to suspect her world was not real.
It really was an elegant solution to the problem
I’m really surprised by how good of an actor Leonardo has become. Honestly, between this and The Departed, amongst other films, I’m a fan.

NYT article 1
Depending on how you interpret certain key images and motifs, there are either three or four levels of dreaming explored by Cobb and his crew. Much else that happens within the film’s packed and hectic 148 minutes — which in third-level dream time is at least a month, and which for some deep slumberers may last forever, or at least feel that way — has occasioned intense and contentious speculation on the Internet. The discourse is marked by the ritualistic incantation of two words that may at this point be redundant: spoiler alert.

INCEPTION SPOILER
Aren’t there three to six, depending on how you interpret things?
Layer one: Rain world
Layer two: Hotel
Layer three: Snow world (these sound like Mario levels)
Layer four (?): Tall building world (can be seen as another level or limbo)
Layer five: (?): Limbo with Seito as an old man (depends if you view limbo as another level of dreaming or not)
If the top keeps on spinning forever, then add plus one to each of the above.
7
INCEPTION SPOILER
One of the most depressing thoughts I had was, if Mal was right and they were dreaming when Cobb thought it was real, then she may be waiting for him in some other world, with the kids, while he continues to sleep. That really bummed me out.

UC Berkeley Visitor Services
The main part of the job was leading campus tours. I loved learning all about the history and data and little details of Cal, and I loved conveying that info to people who wanted to know it. It wasn’t just the info, it was letting people see your enthusiasm and love for Cal, helping them see the things that numbers and facts just can’t show them.
But it wasn’t just giving tours! We also worked in the Tower, which was just such a great honor, to be able to be part of that historical place. It could get boring on slow afternoons sometimes, but in general it was fun, and it was cool to know so much about the tower that so many students never would.
We also worked on major campus events – setup, all through the event, and breakdown. Homecoming, Cal Day – we we were always there, sometimes working almost 12-hour days. Wouldn’t trade it for anything, it was great. Cable Car tours were the best! Just being there for visitors, answering their questions, sharing Cal with them… great. There were ups and downs, of course(avoiding the obvious Sather Tower elevator operator joke) – the Cal Day where it just poured all day was no picnic, for example – but I wouldn’t change it for anything.
I love working with people, and I love Cal, and being the university’s ambassador to the public as a member of UC Berkeley Visitor Services was just the perfect combination. I worked there for 4 years, and I can count on one hand the number of times that it actually felt like work. I really wish I knew how to put into words what a incredibly amazing experience it was. I can step on campus any time, any day, for the rest of my life, and know that I performed a special service for the University that few ever experience and even fewer truly appreciate.

I was a paid intern at a major TV network affiliate in San Francisco while I was an undergrad at Cal. I worked about 16-20 hours/week, making not much more than minimum wage. But the job was great. I was paid, basically, to watch games and log the tape of those games. I also got to choose the highlights for the sports segment of the news and for special sports shows (e.g., 49ers postgame). It was also interesting to see the atmosphere of a TV newsroom.

How does it compare to R? My prof made it seem like R is the greatest thing ever (which is true compared to STATA)
I’ve heard about R, never used it. I also haven’t used STATA, but some of my peers use it just for small little assignments. I can’t imagine R compares to SAS for as much as we pay for our SAS licenses. SAS is a really powerful package for database work. Has a steeper learning curve because there’s not really much of an easy to use graphical interface so you have to do all the programming, but if you’re using it, chances are you’re gonna be doing the programming anyways for what you need to do. I’ve used SPSS and it’s crap, I guess it can be easier to use than SAS for some basic stuff, but overall it just doesn’t compare.
I started learning SAS in college through a few of my econ/stat classes, and while almost everything I did in those classes was probably easier to do with SPSS (because I was doing pretty basic stuff), it was valuable experience – knowing SAS helped me get my job, and my SAS skills have expanded a ton since I started working here. My next step is I want to learn SQL decently well.
by Missing Barry on Jul 21, 2010 11:20 AM PDT up reply actions
R is incredibly powerful as well. The biggest thing it has going for it is that it’s open source, and people release packages for it all the time. R is also a command line editor — the only graphics are those produced by the user. I know my teacher said that R is (slowly) replacing SAS as a corporate program as well — because it’s way cheaper and incredibly customizable.
In terms of database, we used R with SQL and SQLlite DB’s, as well as pretty complex XML files (and basic XLS files as well). It handled all of them with ease.
Not to sound like a shill, but your company should definitely look into R.
Not to sound like a shill, but your company should definitely look into R.
I’ve actually been thinking this for a while, I just don’t know enough about R to know whether it’s a good idea or not. Even if it’s less powerful than SAS…..if it’s free…..it does sound like a really good potential product to me. I’ve considered giving it a try just for fun on my own (building my own retrosheet baseball database or something), haven’t gotten around to it. Would definitely be useful for my future ambitions.
by Missing Barry on Jul 21, 2010 11:26 AM PDT up reply actions
A funny thing is that a major reason companies don’t use R is because it is free and user generated, meaning that there isn’t as much QC done before release of packages and there is no support for the product. In my experience in the health research field the majority of companies tend to use SAS. I agree with you that R is powerful and incorporates new techniques much faster than SAS. I just don’t think it will ever catch on outside of academia.
Its [R’s] one drawback is that it becomes very slow, or may even fail when dealing with extremely large sets of data.
This however is unlikely to be a problem unless you’ve got millions of data to process.
Ouch. Dunno how true that is, but if it is, then it’s not an option for us.

Yeah. Between the population, all the jobs they have that support that population in a place that’s as expensive as anywhere, the financial and media power they have….we could be number 3, though!

[shrug] Maybe. That’s a future argument though, not a past/present argument. But yeah, you might be right that going forward, the Bay Area is best-poised for economic growth. As a Bay Area resident, I certainly hope that’s correct. It still has a long way to go to catch up in terms of clout and might.
The whole reason that this little pissing match began was because I’d pointed out that LA/SoCal’s massive growth during the 20th century had overshadowed the Bay Area, which might be the root of the antipathy many of you NorCal natives demonstrate. You may be right and the pendulum might swing the other way. A lot of LA’s big 20th century industries like aerospace and oil are withering away, so we’ll see how it sustains itself. If SF can be the locus for cutting-edge industries like biotech and green energy, then it’s in great shape.

Why do you think SoCal has so much clout, besides simple population numbers? I really don’t know what drives the economy down there outside of Hollywood and a now failed housing sector….
by Missing Barry on Jul 21, 2010 2:51 PM PDT up reply actions
Well, it’s always been pretty big in manufacturing, and like I said, there was a fair amount of oil production during the 20th century. Commerce-wise, it’s a center for international trade; the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are #1 and #2 busiest ports in the country, and it’s where most of the goods we get from Asia get off-loaded and transported (to put it in perspective, each are about 3 times as busy as the Port of Oakland in terms of container volume). LAX is a huge conveyor of people and high-value freight as well. Pretty much every major international car company has its headquarters in SoCal, and it’s a pretty big center for marketing. And yes, because there are so many people and it’s a desirable place to live, real estate and services are big as well.
"UC Davis??? hahahahaha" - Aaron Rodgers
by atomsareenough on Jul 21, 2010 3:00 PM PDT up reply actions
Well, population alone is a large part of it – industries build and grow where the people are. There’s also historically always been lots of room to expand, and that’s really helped too. But anyways…
like atoms said, aerospace and oil were HUGE parts of the economy. Still are, but they’re fading. The entertainment industry also is a huge part. I know it’s easy to go “blah blah Hollywood”, but entartainment industry is a huge financial juggernaut that whose financial importance really can’t be underestimated, given America’s appetite for entertainment and our global exporting of said entartainment culture. Also, don’t forget about tourism – LA crushes almost every city (except NY, obvi, and probably Vegas) in tourism dollars. Shipping is a big part of the SoCal economy as well – international trade is MASSIVE down there. Port of Oakland is huge, no doubt, but the Port of LA and Port of Long Beach are global centers. The food industry also is a major player down there. Oh, and don’t forget porn, although I suppose that could be included in the entertainment industry.
That’s what I can think of off the top of my head.

CGB: Wasting Your Potential, Your Time, & Your Life Since 2006.
Okay. Let’s all just agree to disagree here, folks.
For starters, NorCal vs. SoCal is a personal thing. You’ll find people who grew up North liking SoCal more and vice-versa. No biggie.
For me personally, I’m much more comfortable up here and just don’t feel as comfortable in many places down there. Are there cool places down there? Sure. Are there “normal” people from SoCal that I’d be proud to call my friends? Sure. Are there snotty/pretentious people from both NorCal and SoCal that I don’t care for. You damn betcha.
Just like you walk onto Cal’s campus and just know that it’s the right place…For me, flying down to LA just didn’t feel like the right place for me. I can’t explain it, put a finger on it, or list it. I just know I don’t care for it. I know it’d be different if I grew up there.
For whatever reason, it’s ingrained in Norcal culture growing up to hat on SoCal. It just is. Maybe it’s an offshoot of politics, money, and water…Or there are just plenty of easy targets in SoCal with some of the Hollywood types. So yes, it’s irrational. No, we can’t explain it. It just is. So, I apologize for all of us NorCal folks, but we occasionally hat on anything SoCal just ‘cuz. We know that not all of you are posers or phoneys. But, we just can’t help ourselves.
Let’s call this a day. We live up here. We all went to Cal. We want to beat the LA schools. End of story. Please?

CGB: Wasting Your Potential, Your Time, & Your Life Since 2006.
Housing? Are you kidding me? We’ve got is worse up here.
CGB: Wasting Your Potential, Your Time, & Your Life Since 2006.
I’m not sure what you’re referring to when you say “overpriced” housing. If it’s “overpriced”, that implies a market correction is coming to me. If it’s simply “expensive”….well, then it’s not actually expensive as long as it continues to be valued highly. Going back to “overpriced”, do we really need to look at maps of the housing bubble collapse? SoCal, and especially Riverside county, got hit hardest in the country along with Phoenix, Las Vegas and Florida. That sure as heck says “overpriced” to me….
by Missing Barry on Jul 21, 2010 2:56 PM PDT up reply actions
That doesn’t necessarily mean “overpriced”. The crash in Arizona was because things were overpriced. The construction and housing industries were huge because Arizona was one of the fastest growing population centers in the country – and as time went on, the kept building, and building, and building more houses than they had people to but them, because they expected the rate of growth to keep climbing, or at the very least stay constantly high. When people stopped buying, everything fell apart. It wasn’t because things were overpriced, people just stopped buying because times were tough.
CGB: Wasting Your Potential, Your Time, & Your Life Since 2006.
Well, when demand is growing like that and prices adjust to said demand, and then all of a sudden we realize that level of demand wasn’t actaully sustainable…..yeah, I’d say things were overpriced. I mean, prices fell dramatically….because they were overpriced (with many of the factors you point out contributing to that)!
by Missing Barry on Jul 21, 2010 3:18 PM PDT up reply actions
Hmmm… but prices fell because it’s better to get something than nothing, didn’t they? I’m just wondering if that doesn’t necessarily mean “overpriced”, just the market would bear less?
CGB: Wasting Your Potential, Your Time, & Your Life Since 2006.
Well, you’re free to define overpriced however you see fit! I will say there are a lot of measures that indicate prices really were out of whack – if you look at price to rent ratios, or price to income ratios, you’ll see it. Those are things that should be fairly constant even in a changing market, and they grew to levels they simply should not have been at.

Best job evair
My first law school summer I clerked for the Air Force JAG (military attorneys) in Okinawa, Japan. The JAG office was on the 12th hole of the base golf course. The days were filled with various interesting issues as they handled everything from arson to divorce to government contracts. At precisely 4:25 the officers would roll by the office and say “tee off at sixteen thirty,” and in five minutes we were teeing off. After the round we would hang out at the outdoor patio and drink inexpensive but good beer (Grolsch dark was my choice at the time – $1). Each weekend I would snorkel in the live coral reef, play golf, lift weights and lounge about on this tropical island. I got into the best shape of my life. The Okinawa night life was interesting and eclectic, and the sushi and other seafood was damn good. I made LESS THAN minimum wage (the federales could do that), but I had a fantastic time.

ESPN/Scouts Inc. hates Tedford & Co
A look back at 2007 recruiting
California
Class: 27
ESPNU top 150 players: 0
How many are expected to start in 2010: 10 (OT Matt Summers-Gavin, P Bryan Anger, LB D.J. Holt, WR Alex Lagemann, OT Mitchell Schwartz, S Sean Cattouse, S Chris Conte, OG Justin Cheadle, DE Cameron Jordan, RB Shane Vereen).
Misses: QB Brock Mansion, CB D.J. Campbell
Verdict: Obviously, ESPN.com’s Scouts Inc., missed with its evaluation of this solid recruiting class, particularly when you consider RB Jahvid Best, WR Nyan Boateng and LB Devin Bishop were significant contributors before their tenures were done. Jordan and Vereen obviously were well underrated. And there were 21 running backs better than Best?

Oakland getting down and fun-kay!
The Oakland City Council voted 5-2 with one abstention late Tuesday in favor of a plan to license four production plants where marijuana would be grown, packaged and processed.
The vote came after more than two hours of public comment, with speakers divided between those who opposed the measure — largely on the grounds that it would put small medical marijuana growers out of business — and those who said it would generate millions of dollars for Oakland in taxes and sales and create hundreds of jobs.
The plants would not be limited in size — one potential applicant for a license wants to open a plant that would produce over 21,000 pounds of pot a year — but they would be heavily taxed and regulated.
Those vying for one of the four licenses would have to pay $211,000 in annual permit fees, carry $2 million worth of liability insurance and be prepared to devote up to 8 percent of gross sales to taxes.

Actually, this year our tax code doesn’t count inheritance at all. If anyone has any crazy, rich old rellies, this would be the year to…

Also, not technically true. If I understand correctly, the earnings from the inheritance would be taxed upon the beneficiary, but the initial estate itself I don’t believe would be taxed.
CGB's Jimmy Carter
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
Unless something’s changed dramatically in the last few years (entirely possible), the beneficiary is not taxed at all. The estate is traditionally taxed based upon its full value, and then it is divided according to the terms of the will. As the inheritance tax is 0% in 2010, right now nobody gets taxed. It basically works the same as the gift tax.
At least that is how it worked for my granny’s estate, for which I was co-executor.
Any interest, dividends or other income generated by the assets of the estate after the date of death of the decedent is considered income to the beneficiaries, and is taxed accordingly. But that is not the inheritance. That is money earned by the beneficiaries after they have inherited.

What’s funny is that I had never actually looked at the K1 form (Caution: PDF) used for beneficiary returns, since I’m not a CPA.
CGB's Jimmy Carter

Inheritance has never been treated as income for tax purposes as far as I know. It has always been subject to a separate tax system, the estate tax. If your inheritance is less than whatever the established threshold amount is for the year the person died (I think it was $2 million in 2009, although I’m not absolutely sure), then there is no tax on it at all. The tax kicks in at a pretty substantial rate for amounts over that threshold. As Scootie said, as part of the “death tax” crusade to ensure than the rich stay rich, the estate tax was completely abolished for 2010. But comes back next year. If you have rich relatives, 2010 is clearly the year to do something about them.

He’ll probably start for Team USA this summer, given that his main competition looks likely to be Tyson Chandler, JaVale McGee, and his brother Robin.
But seriously, what other centers can you clearly put over him? Dwight Howard is one obvious, but Bynum has injury concerns, Noah doesn’t have much of an offensive game, and Bogut’s coming off that freakish arm injury.

Yeah, guys like Gasol/Duncan are no brainers….
As for Brook, he’s a nice offensive player, I have no idea how he is defensively, and he’s an average rebounder. He’s also young and should get better. So yeah, he’s pretty good, I’m curious as to whether’s he’s one of those guys that’s overrated because people tend to “rate” based on offense?
by Missing Barry on Jul 21, 2010 10:13 AM PDT up reply actions
At this point he hasn’t yet arrived, but he does have a good post game, developing jumper, and makes his free throws, so he’s the kind of guy that an offense can be built around.
As far as his defense, he’s not the greatest help defender though he gets a pretty good number of blocks. But it’s a bit hard to tell since the guys he was playing with last year (Yi, Jarvis Hayes, Kris Humphries) were pretty atrocious on D.

Yeah bad teammates can really make a big man look terrible defensively. See: Biedrins, Andris. When the other teams guards get to the rim at will, it’s hard to stop your own guy from scoring/rebounding and consistently have good position defensively, plus you pick up fouls and get scored over consistently….

Michael Steele’s greatest hits keep on coming. This guy is a machine:
The Republican National Committee failed to report more than $7 million in debt to the Federal Election Commission in recent months – a move that made its bottom line appear healthier than it is heading into the midterm elections and that also raises the prospect of a hefty fine.
In a memo to RNC budget committee members, RNC Treasurer Randy Pullen on Tuesday accused Chairman Michael S. Steele and his chief of staff, Michael Leavitt, of trying to conceal the information from him by ordering staff not to communicate with the treasurer – a charge RNC officials deny.
Mr. Pullen told the members that he had discovered $3.3 million in debt from April and $3.8 million from May, which he said had led him to file erroneous reports with the FEC. He amended the FEC filings Tuesday.
Campaign-finance analysts said that simply misreporting fundraising numbers to the FEC can lead to millions of dollars in fines and that criminal charges can be levied if the actions are suspected to be intentional.

It doesnt matter. Thanks to Citizen United, the major financial donors are essentiallyproviding funds to a shadow RNC run by former Bushites. I’ve always been skeptical that Citizens United really changed much in the way of things, I think it just allowed these shadow organizations to run more out in the open. But they are basically working around Steele, the RNC has become a laughingstock and useless and as soon as the last vote is counted, hes very fired.
It helps, though, that he keeps fucking up.

Are there rules for last call?
have some simple solutions to the problem that I would like to share with my readers:
First, let’s talk about the “house” and its policies. Establishments, within reason, should have a closing time that is well-defined for the bar staff. Closing times should be consistent, which can help to attract some late business if in fact the locals know that you will be open until your stated closing time, and therefore they won’t hesitate to come because they know you will be open whether there is one patron or twenty at the bar. A consistent closing time can also dissuade a bartender from arbitrarily calling last call before the agreed upon time to do so.
The bartender should know when to give last call, and then when to clear the drinks off the bar. If possible, the patrons should be told before they order their final drinks, just how long they have to finish them. Let’s say hypothetically that the bar closes at 2:00. The last call should either come at 1:30 or 1:45. Then, the customers have time to enjoy their libation, without the stress of not knowing how long they have until they must leave. If a bar serves a drink and then changes the atmosphere to shoo away the customers, I believe it is a breach of ethics when a façade is created that the establishment is still open and then the ambiance is changed. Whether intentional or not, serving a drink and then rushing the customer is frankly gouging, and it is a very bad policy to have no matter what type of drinking establishment one runs.
CGB's Jimmy Carter
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
What a whiney douchebag. And I’m saying this as a big drinker.
Bars and clubs get their liquor licenses taken away if they see a single customer sipping an alcoholic beverage past 2 AM. Getting customers out of there may have to do with bartenders and staff wanting to go home, but a lot of it is management making the rules. Smaller places with fewer than ten patrons will bend the rules a little, but that’s because they have the oversight to ensure that you down your drink before 2 am. I’ve been served at 1:57 am before in Berkeley before with this exact understanding.
7
Yeah in Santa Cruz it depends on the bar, some will call it quits at 1:30 consistently others will stay serving til 1:50 one night and close out at 1:15 the next, it all depends on the crowd that night…
Also traditionally rowdier bars will try and start clearing people out at 1:30 in SC too

My father and I used to go to the LA Auto Show every year without fail, and I would check it out every model year just to see what changes they’d made to it. My engineer friend told me that the costs associated with your uber-battery made it wash on gas savings. Plus, the uber-battery doesn’t tend to last as long as a well-maintained combustion engine.
There is a slight edge for the dinky cars, but the hybrid SUV’s are just silly. Not green at all. And waaay over-priced for what you get.

For a long, long time, I had planned to be an optometrist. Sadly, it didn’t work out that way :-(
Point is, I still have a soft spot in my heart for said noble profession, and I just really hate when people see it as some sort of fallback to medical school, when it is an amazing goal and profession in and of itself.
CGB: Wasting Your Potential, Your Time, & Your Life Since 2006.
Oh I see. Makes sense. People give me the “you were only a dentist because you didn’t get into med school” crack all the time. I guess it doesn’t bother me because I’ve heard it for 13+ years now. (and I also know that it’s untrue in my case) Many of my closest friends went medical instead of dental, and I wouldn’t change places with any of them. Their profession is getting abused by the insurance companies and it’s not what they expected.
One of my best friends from Cal is an optometrist, as is my uncle (a proud Cal grad and Bear Backer), so you won’t ever hear me talking serious smack about their profession.
The “winner” comment was a semi-snarky reference to paleodan’s plea to be recognized as a winner in the 7/20/10 Trekkie/Klingon heart thread.
I’m sorry things didn’t work out for you. If you ever change your mind and want to re-visit applying, shoot me an email. I’m sure either my friend or uncle wouldn’t mind talking to you and giving some tips regarding apps/admissions.
Irate Toothmonger - Will get all up in your business for food
Well, I appreciate it. I dunno – I’m in my early 30’s now, and optometry school has the most pre-req’s out of all the professional schools – I dunno if I have the heart to go through all that again.
Plus… it’s just hard to face the past sometimes. I mean, when I was in highschool, I did research at Minor Hall with a former Dean of the school, with whom i became friends – I did more research in his lab when I was in college, I had contacts at other optometry schools… I had a ton going for me, and I really worked hard, but there were things out of my control that just… well, it just didn’t work. It’s a lot to face up to, and at this point it’s easier to just go another way.
…wow, ok, didn’t mean to get all mental. Sorry.
CGB: Wasting Your Potential, Your Time, & Your Life Since 2006.

Huge new stars found:
A team of astronomers from the European Space Agency used archival data from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, in addition to the images from the Very Large Telescope, to study the star clusters. One cluster is 22,000 light years away from the Sun, while the other cluster is 165,000 light years away. The leader of the group, Professor Paul Crowther from the University of Sheffield, said of the find:
Unlike humans, these stars are born heavy and lose weight as they age. Being a little over a million years old, the most extreme star R136a1 is already ‘middle-aged’ and has undergone an intense weight loss programme, shedding a fifth of its initial mass over that time, or more than fifty solar masses."
Basking in the glory of this historic discovery, Crowther added, “Owing to the rarity of these monsters, I think it is unlikely that this new record will be broken any time soon.”

US increases sanctions against North Korea
Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, announced a tightening of measures aimed at throttling North Korea’s atomic programme and choking off the supply of luxury goods to the country’s elite.
The restrictions were expected to target individuals within the regime and banks that help fund the nuclear industry through illicit activities such as money laundering, counterfeiting and the trade in arms and luxury goods.
But it remained unclear how much influence the new measures would have. The US, UN and Japan have all imposed waves of sanctions against North Korea in the past. As a result, the country’s economy is now believed to be in a wretched state, while the leadership shows few signs of acquiescence.
All world cup jokes aside, the people of North Korea are starving, and this doesn’t seem like it’s a step towards rectifying that.
Then, what is? The only thing that will verifiably stop the starving is to destroy the regime. No amount of aid can do that. But how do you destroy the regime?

Nooooooo!
Study finds that those who eat meat, long term, also gain more weight, regardless of calories.
Those who ate the least meat also gained the least weight. Eating an additional 250 grams of meat meant an extra 4.4 pounds over five years.
Because meat is so dense in calories, it makes sense that vegetarian diets would be lower in overall energy — making weight management easier. Surprisingly, however, this study actually controlled for caloric intake and overall dietary pattern.
The team also controlled for education, physical activity and smoking habits.

But I figure grains are still necessary, just cut them off after a point.

7
That’s tough. I guess you’d have to do a lot of protein shakes + fruits/veggies. Doesn’t it really affect your recovery time if you don’t get at least some carbs?
Irate Toothmonger - Will get all up in your business for food
Why would you give up oatmeal in the mornings? That’s actually one of the best things you can eat to start your day. Keep in mind, carbs are the fuel for your body, not protein or fat. We need those things, but carbs are extremely important. Hence, the reason why all no-carb and many low-carb diets are really not good for you.

Do what one of my (girl) friends does. Fruit for breakfast, steamed vegetables for lunch, and something equally un-fun for diner. She does weigh like less than 90 pounds though
It would be so much easier if you ate meat: grilled chicken/salmon/turkey, steamed / sauted vegetables.
The appetite thing, at least to some degree, is just something you get used to. If you start eating less, eventually your body will adjust.

Ohio Bear Is Not Chosen to be Chief Justice of California
Sorry, Ohio Bear. However, Ahnold’s choice is an excellent one, Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye of the Third District Court of Appeal. I have appeared before her, and she is smart, moderate, non-ideological, and courteous. Just about everything I could ask for in a judge. She will give the California Supreme Court a 4-3 majority of women for the first time ever (yay)! And, best of all, she is a life-long resident of Sacramento! And if that isn’t enough, she worked her way through college and law school by spending summers as a blackjack dealer in Reno — who could ask for anything more in a chief justice!

Remind me how this works in California — the article says she has to be approved by voters in November. Is that the same way that a “retention” election works — voters will pick yay or nay on the ballot? And if she wins, will she sit for 12 years before her next retention election or does she have to go up for retention again when Chief Justice George would have had to?
Yes, I am an Old Blue. Now get off my lawn.
Your understanding of the process is correct. If Chief Justice George had left office in the middle of his term, the new Chief Justice’s term would have expired whenever George’s term would have expired. However, George is retiring at the end of his 12-year term – it ends in November – so the new Chief Justice will get a full 12-year term, assuming she is confirmed.

CA Municipal salaries gone wild
An overflow crowd packed a City Council meeting in Bell, a mostly Hispanic city of 38,000 about 10 miles (16 kilometers) southeast of Los Angeles, to call for the resignation of Mayor Oscar Hernandez and other city officials. Residents left standing outside the chamber banged on the doors and shouted "fuera," or "get out" in Spanish.
It was the first council meeting since the Los Angeles Times reported July 15 that Chief Administrative Officer Robert Rizzo earns $787,637 — with annual 12 percent raises — and that Bell pays its police chief $457,000, more than Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck makes in a city of 3.8 million people. Bell council members earn almost $100,000 for part-time work.

Favorite job
I have a few favorite jobs (none of which, obviously, I hold at this time…) sprinkled throughout my career.
While in high school I worked at Marine World, at a little snack stand selling Its-Its and cokes to the masses attending the killer whale show. For a 17-year-old, Marine World was an awesome place to work, full of kids my age, where the park planned huge parties for the staff a few times a year, and you were welcome to go waterski after work behind the MasterCrafts from the ski show. Weekdays were a mix of frantic 10 minute periods selling ice cream and popcorn when the show let out, and then a leisurely hour chatting with your friends, flirting with the lion trainer who went on to host Wild Kingdom, and “accidentally” “damaging” Its-Its by slamming them in the freezer door so one could eat them for free (or so I heard). Two lovely summers.
Then for a blissful year and a half in my early twenties, I was the event planner at Oracle. Million dollar Christmas parties, booking UB40 and an entire fairground’s worth of rides for the company picnic, going sailing for the day with my event production company and calling it “site inspections” — pretty much all enjoyable, all the time. It was such a great mix of a need for insane detail orientation and organization with an eye for what is fun and what other people will enjoy. I loved everything about it except how much my soul died each time I told one of my college friends that I planned parties for a living.
And finally, I spent two years as the chief of staff for the dude who ran Amex in Europe, before my last role there. It was the most interesting job ever. I felt like I knew ten times as much when I left as when I started, and even though the hours were brutal and the travel was non-stop, it was totally enjoyable. Though the job would have been really interesting no matter what, what really made it wonderful was how well I got along with my boss and with our CFO, both of whom I traveled (and laughed) with incessantly. It really made me understand the importance the people you work with have in making your job pleasant.
I planned parties for a living.
And we have our winner for who hosts/organizes the next CGB Tailgate!

One in three men don’t feel safe when their ladyfriend is driving [DailyMail]
Men’s biggest complaints were that women are too easily distracted by children, scenery or other motorists.
Other grumbles included allowing the car to ‘roll’ from side to side instead of keeping it in a straight line and not staying away from rumble strips.
Flicking the accelerator, which results in a stop-start feel to the ride, also came high on the list, as did getting too close to cars before overtaking.
Braking too late was the second most common complaint, while braking too hard came in sixth. Not braking at all surprisingly didn’t make the top ten.

Best Paid(relative to effort/work): After my 1st year at Cal, I worked temp for a summer. I got a generic envelope stuffing job where I literally was assigned to stuff envelopes. There was some older guy in his late 20’s/early 30’s doing the same thing. Not knowing I was supposed to milk it, I worked quickly and finished early. The other guy was really mad at me. But, the company hired me as an administrative assistant full-time after that. I got paid $10/hr to make copies. On the day the copier broke, I got paid $10/hr to drink hot chocolate. Unreal.
Most interesting: I worked as a research assistant for a biotech lab that was trying to develop a non-invasive screening test for HIV. Instead of needles and blood, they were looking for an assay that used urine. Aside from the grossness of working with urine samples all day, it was actually quite exciting from a scientific standpoint to see where this was going. During my 2nd year, I was given an individual project and had a lot of fun running with it. Then, funding got cut and I was told to shelve everything. Big eye-opener to how things can work in biotech.
Best overall: I’m happy with where I am today. Like any job, there are things I really dislike. But, I’m not naive enough to think the grass is automatically bluer in the next pasture. I get to make a difference in the lives of children, and that’s usually a pretty cool deal. Besides, given that I wasn’t overly blessed with grace, with, or a fully functional brain, this is probably the best that I can do.
Irate Toothmonger - Will get all up in your business for food
Yeah. I was really, really bummed. They had given me a new type of assay and told me to go play with it to see if it would work. I used to wake up at 5am, drive to BART, go up to Berkeley, take a bus to Albany, just so I could get in early enough to start the tests. It was showing promise, too. Sigh.

That Ilya Kovalchuk contract was rejected by the NHL
Tuesday night, reports surfaced that the NHL had rejected forward Ilya Kovalchuk’s 17-year, $102 million contract with New Jersey, on the grounds that it circumvents the salary cap. While the future is uncertain, there is no question about how we arrived at this point.
The arguments against Kovalchuk’s deal are compelling. It takes him to the age of 44, and not even Ilya’s mother believes he will be an active NHL player that long. Even Lamoriello himself expressed skepticism about long deals like this, after all, and he is the general manager responsible for its existence. The deal is heavily front-loaded, to the point where Kovalchuk will earn more money in one season ($11.5 million) than he will in the last seven years combined.
I’m pretty sure it’s just because the league office wants to help make sure he doesn’t get killed playing in Newark.

By the way, seeing as how I haven’t been participating recently….probably an old topic, but for anyone who wants to contribute – thoughts on financial reform? I think the bill is weak. In general, I think it was doomed from the start – their strategy was bad, it seemed like to fix things they wanted to give more power to regulators, and I think that’s a poor strategy. Regulators are going to mess up (as we saw), often for the same reasons as everyone else that’s messing up. I think the goal of reform should have been to set up a system that will have its crashes, but we just limit the fallout from the crashes (like the system that was in place the majority of the 20th century). Basically, it’s not about creating regulators that clamp down on what the industry as doing as much as just reducing the industry’s impact on the rest of the economy. So….yeah, we didn’t really fix anything. Anyone been directly affected by financial reform? Do you think it will help/harm you? I have some new job responsibilties, and I’m honestly not sure they’re worthwhile.
On a related note, this whole austerity thing is stupid. Until we solve the jobs problem, we cannot solve the deficit/debt problem. Worrying about the budget now doesn’t help anything.
Fair enough. Political talk was unbanned, right? One of the DBD headlines said something about it so I’m assuming you don’t mean “we’re not allowed to talk about this topic on CGB”, right?

Not answering the direct topic, but part of your (by you, I really mean anyone) problem with regulators may be self-propagating from your opinion of regulators. (link)
[S]uccessful regulation, by filling information gaps and managing risk, fosters confidence in the safety and honesty of markets, which in turn makes them bigger and more robust. The pharmaceutical industry, for instance, would be much smaller if people were seriously worried that they might be poisoned every time they took a new drug. And though executives chafe at financial regulation, the protection it provides makes investors far more likely to hand them money to play with. If we want our regulators to do better, we have to embrace a simple idea: regulation isn’t an obstacle to thriving free markets; it’s a vital part of them.
I have a lot of thoughts on regulators, but I’m going to keep them to myself for a number of reasons. And by that I mean….
It was a clear black night, a clear white moon….

There was a bit of talk about it last week. I’ve been busy with other projects still so I haven’t been able to really get back to see the final product much more.
Here are the thoughts I posted about it before.
I’m glad to see that the CFTC and SEC will kind of stop their pissing match, but I don’t know how well they’ll work together now that they’re both forced to regulate hybrid products.
The The is above making sense.
I pretty much agree with this. Though, I heard an argument somewhere, that in some respects you have to make a tradeoff between giving powers to the regulators and trusting the legislators to be right in the particulars of legislation, which I’m not sure I do. Do members of Congress know how big is “too big to fail”, and exactly what level of capital big banks need to be required to have, for example?

Judge rules competitive cheerleading is not a sport; ruling could affect Oregon Ducks
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A federal judge in Connecticut has ruled competitive cheerleading is not an official sport that schools can use to meet gender-equity requirements.
U.S. District Judge Stefan Underhill says competitive cheerleading is too underdeveloped.
The ruling could have implications at the University of Oregon, whose varsity competitive cheer squad — which it calls stunts and gymnastics — had its first season of competition in 2009-10.

Somehow I doubt this will effect their decision to keep their cheerleading squad around. Which is really all that matters.

It’s one decision from one federal district judge in Connecticut. I don’t think Oregon has to panic yet.

Why would you care about competitive cheerleading as a sport? It’s not a sport. The entire point of cheerleading is for them to stand there and look hot so we can add a sex element to our sports. I like it, but it’s not meant as a sport or comeptition. That completely defeats the purpose.

Although, despite the joking over Carp’s obsession with cheerleaders, there is a potentially serious consequence to the finding by a federal court that cheerleading is not a sport. Under Title IX, schools are required to provide equal opportunities for male and female athletes, including an equal number of athletic scholarships. Football poses a problem for most schools, because the number of football scholarships is much larger than for any other sport. This means that a large number of scholarship women’s sports have to be offered to create the same number of scholarships for women athletes. It also limits the number of other men’s sports that can be offered. If cheerleading is considered a sport, then scholarships given to female cheerleaders could be counted for Title IX purposes. I believe that was the issue in this case.
In addition, it might interest you to know that the California appellate courts have held that cheerleading is a sport, at least for purposes of tort liability. There is a legal doctrine called primary assumption of risk under which coaches, sponsors and co-participants of a sport are freed from any liability for injuries caused by normal participation in a sport. The California courts have found that the high-risk stunts involved in modern cheerleading (cheerleaders doing flips off the top fo human pyramids, throwing cheerleaders in the air, etc.) make it a sport, so that cheerleaders who are injured cannot sue for their injuries.
But mostly, I think Carp was just joking about his well-know predilection for cheerleaders in general and Oregon cheerleaders in particular.

So it would follow that cheerleading may be dropped from schools because they don’t want to be held liable for injuries?

No, because the federal court was only determining whether cheerleading is a sport as that term is defined in Title IX, a federal statute. That determination would not affect the California state court cases determining whether it is a sport for purposes of liability. I should add, the those California cases dealt specifically with “competitive cheerleading” — the kind involving gymnastic-like stunts — not traditional cheerleading, which is just the girls standing on the sideline waving pompoms and such.

Actually the opposite. In terms of colleges, cheerleading not being counted a sport won’t affect cheerleading – they can continue doing that, and I imagine they would, but because it no longer qualifies as a woman’s sport it actually means that the mens sports have to lose scholarships roughly equal to the lost scholarships for cheerleading (do they give cheerleading scholarships…?).

What will you miss most about playing with the Warriors? What will you miss most about the Bay Area?
I will miss Oracle Arena, I will miss the interactions with my old teammates. I created bonds with the guys on this team and this organization that I personally value. I will miss my sidekick Andris "Goose" Biedrins.
About the Bay Area, I will miss living in close proximity to my favorite restaurants; Chipotle, Northbeach Pizza, and Calzones after games and ultimately my house.

My favorite job is my current one. I work with lots of other smart, competent people, I get to work on interesting problems, I’m learning a lot, I get paid enough that my wife doesn’t have to work right now, and I get meals catered at work.
Surprisingly, my high school job testing computer games (for $15/hr) wasn’t as awesome as it sounds. It wasn’t bad, though :)

It’s amazing how an 18 year old’s decision doesn’t cause an absolute meltdown when you don’t live and breathe football.
At least I represented us well with my immediate post-reporting anger.

The only way that could be better would be if the root beer floats were made with Sacramento’s River City Root Beer!

Matt Watson hit his first MLB home run too. For those who don’t know, he was in the A’s system for a while earlier this decade and did enough to earn a call-up and to deserve more than a cup of coffee. He left for Japan for a couple of years, then played ball in Korea and for a few other MLB minor league affiliates. Finally, he was re-signed by the A’s earlier this year, and now he’s hit his first home run. Some really good journeyman stuff here.

Great, now I’m depressed. Curse you Boomtho! It’s really a shame that education as a field is generally so poorly compensated.
