DBD 7.15.10 -- Politics. UNBANNED!
Back in March, we had a little bit of March Madness here at CGB. I am not talking about our Pac-10 champion men’s basketball team in the NCAA tournament; nor am I talking about our WNIT champion women’s basketball team. I am talking about the sea change in moderation policy that took place on March 22, 2010:
This message is simple. In general, no more political discussion on CGB. There are a few caveats to that and I will explain in more detail the thought process that is going into this, but allow me to be clear: No more political discussion on CGB.
That was the decree. In other words, politics...
TwistNHook explained in detail why this policy was deemed to be needed for this site. A lot of the motivation behind this policy was the increasing difficulty the Marshawnthusiasts had in moderating all of the political discussion. Political discussion too often degenerated into slapfighting and flame wars and TwistNHook was usually the one left holding the bag as the moderator left to manage the dispute. Politics, it seemed, was an animal unlike any other on CGB. And there was the sincere concern that the political discussion, due to its seemingly inevitable volatility, was driving readers away from the DBD or, worse, CGB altogether.
TwistNHook felt that he had the rather unenviable decision of either banning the few readers who consistently engaged in political flame wars or banning the discussion itself. All of these readers brought a lot to the table in other non-political discussions and it seemed foolish to throw out the baby with the bathwater. So, rather than endure the cries of "BANNINGS!", he felt it easier to endure the cries of "CENSORSHIP!" Fortunately now, with the creation of the Hit Squad, there is a team of people who can manage the situation, instead of it being left to one overwhelmed person.
When the Hit Squad was formed and deputized a couple of months ago, one of our issues to consider was the politics ban. Should it continue? Should it be lifted? Should it be modified? In the months since the politics ban, it has become increasingly evident to a majority of the Hit Squad that the politics ban is an imperfect solution. Notwithstanding the genuine and legitimate concerns that led to imposing the ban in the first place, the Hit Squad has decided, with the blessing of the Marshawnthusiasts, that we no longer wish to declare Sanchez an entire topic on the DBD. We are therefore lifting the politics ban, on a provisional basis, subject to the terms set forth here.
Just as with the original decision to ban politics, we do not enter lightly into this decision to lift the politics ban. While we expect that many CGB members who enjoyed political discussion on the DBD will welcome this return to open discourse, we understand fully that there will be those who dread this decision and look with dread upon the politics discussion returning to the DBD. (It is not unlike what happens when we line up in the Wildbear formation—many of us love seeing it; many of us dread it.)
We understand that we might alienate some readers who dislike scrolling through a multitude of political debates on the DBD. At the same time, however, we have decided that the politics ban is not within the spirit of what CGB is generally and what the DBD is specifically. We have heard (and heeded) the complaints from some of you that the enforcement of the politics ban is hypocritical, haphazard, inconsistent, parochial, and [insert your chosen derogatory adjective here]. And, quite frankly, we grew increasingly uncomfortable with the thought of banning a topic that is important to a great many of you while at the same time allowing any number of other topics you see on the DBD.
What’s more, it has become evident that politics is not the only topic that can lead to testy exchanges that are challenging to your moderators (e.g., disputes over statistical analysis (!); World Cup spoiler posts). That reality begs the question: how can we continue to ban politics while leaving other topics open for discussion, even though those other topics could lead to the same occurrences that led to the politics ban in the first place? Admittedly, topics other than politics are easier to moderate. Even when there are comments that arguably cross the line of flaming or slapfighting, the discussions tend to die a lot more quickly than politics threads (with a few notable exceptions) and ultimately need little moderation. And in many non-political discussions, comments that may look like flaming and slapfights are not really that – and, believe it or not, your CGB moderators can (more often than not) tell the difference between a slapfight being real and being playful.
But politics was the only topic of discussion that, on a consistent basis, turned nasty. While other flame wars might pop up from time to time, they tended to be fairly random and easier to control on a singular basis. But political discussions were erupting on a consistent basis and turning nasty on that same consistent basis.
But even though "politics is different," we did not want to continue an outright ban on political discussion. In the final analysis, given all of the factors discussed above, we have decided to once again err on the side of open discourse on the DBD. For those of you who do not like the political discussion, the "z" key is your friend, just as it might be the friend of those who skip over any other topics covered on the DBD that are not of interest to a given reader.
So here go you, CGB. The political floor is yours. The ban is lifted, for now. But use your floor responsibly or the ban might come back. We will moderate the political discussion and, because of its potential volatility, we as mods will watch it carefully and step in when warranted to make sure that it does not devolve into the unpleasant flaming and slapfighting that no one wants to see.
So please, keep in mind the guidelines that apply to ALL discourse on this blog. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, here is a gentle reminder:
• Please treat each other with respect. When you disagree with another commentator, please do so without personal attacks, instead relying on the force of your arguments to carry the day. Note that we moderators can tell the difference between playful joshing and vicious invective; as long as everyone's having fun, we won't stand in your way.
• Please extend the same philosophy when commenting on other articles written around the web or elsewhere. If you want to take a particular ESPN personality to task for his or her general lack of understanding of quarterbacking, football, logical reasoning and a basic grasp of the English language, by all means, be my guest. Just don't descend into simply calling them a douchebag, however. Attack the argument, not the arguer.
• No slap fights, please. Many CGB commentators have shown themselves extremely adept at engaging in reasoned debate on any manner of topics, and we have no desire to limit such discussions. Occasionally, however, topic subthreads have descended into commentators spouting unjustified opinions and mindless talking points at each other in an uncivil manner, making everyone else around them uncomfortable. These slap fights add nothing to CGB, and the moderators will henceforth be making a greater effort to quash them as they crop up.
• Content that is overtly racist, sexist, or otherwise objectionable to decently-educated members of society will not be tolerated.
These general guidelines, if you follow them, should keep political discussion from becoming the bane of our CGB existence. In addition, let’s remember the following when it comes to political discussion:
1. Keep it on the DBD and the DBD only! This is, after all, a Cal sports blog, first and foremost. As we know, the DBD is an organic, free flowing discourse that goes in any number of directions on a given day. If politics belongs anywhere on this site, it is on the DBD. Anywhere else, it is off topic. And one of the rules here, flexible as it may be, is to stay on topic.
2. The general guidelines linked and quoted above speak to this, but let me emphasize it again: treat each other with respect. In politics discussions, it is particularly easy to fall into the trap of attacking the person instead of the argument. So please try your best NOT to fall into the trap. Act like reasonable intelligent people debating a political issue, and we’ll be fine. Keep in mind: you’re not running for office on this blog, so there’s no need to paint someone else as the Great Stupid Satan in order to try and make your point. Make your point intelligently: most of us are Cal grads, after all, so we can handle that, can’t we?
3. We mods will be exercising plenary power here. If we think something crosses the line, we’ll deal with it. Delete, hide, chastise, scold, we can and will do any number of things. Because that’s what the Hit Squad was designed to do – calmly and rationally try to keep CGB posters from acting like jackasses, or saying jackassey things. And if people can’t behave themselves, we may have to go back to the outright ban. So play nice and everything will be fine. Don’t ruin it for the rest of the folks.
4. Please respect the mods and try to give us the benefit of the doubt. We'll try to be understanding, hands-off, and not overbearing. But if we step in and ask people to chill out or tone it down, please respect our request and do so. We do not intend to stifle you. We are just trying to keep the DBD a relatively sane place.
So, how about that California guv race? How about Ohio’s – Kasich or Strickland, who ya got? And what about that response to the Gulf oil spill? Big clusterfuck there, huh? And how about that Sarah Palin in 2012? Facepalm or "You Betcha"? And by summer's end, it's gonna be Justice Elena Kagan, amirite?
Just kidding. I don’t REALLY want to talk about those things. But if you do, knock yourself out. (Within the guidelines, of course.)
The opinions expressed in a FanPost are, in every way, reflective of the opinions of every California Golden Blogs Marshawnthusiast. Moreover, they are reflective of every employee of SBNation, including Tyler "Blez" Bleszinski.

Cal LHP Justin Jones named freshman All-American
Another accolade has been added to California’s Justin Jones’ list of achievements this past spring as the freshman left-hander has been named a 2010 second-team Freshman All-American by Baseball America, it was announced by national baseball publication.
Jones, who was also a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American and a first-team All-Pac-10 selection, was sixth in the Pac-10 with 10 wins (10-6, 4.22 ERA) and 30 strikeouts looking in 98.0 innings pitched. He was a part of two shutouts and threw two complete games this season, including a 6-4 victory March 12 at then No. 9-ranked Rice. Jones’ 10 victories as a freshman tied him for sixth on the Cal all-time single-season list.

Three Cal athletes earn postgraduate schollies
Congratulations to these student athletes
Pac-10 Commissioner Larry Scott has announced that three California Golden Bear student athletes (Sophia Hocini of women’s gymnastics, Kellan Patterson of men’s track & field, and Shay Seager of women’s crew) have been named recipients of Pac-10 Postgraduate Scholarships for 2009-10.
These $3,000 awards go to student-athletes with a minimum 3.0 GPA who have also demonstrated a commitment to continuing education, campus and community involvement, and leadership. Since the program began in 1999, the Pac-10 has awarded over $1 million for postgraduate study. This year, 38 Pac-10 student athletes received one of these postgraduate scholarships.

WORLD CUP SPOILER ALERT
Cal soccer coaches do World Cup wrap-up Q&A
CalBears.com: What did you think of the final?
Kevin Grimes: It was a disappointing game from what most people have said and what a lot of people have observed. Holland looked to resort to some brutal tactics to try and get a World Cup trophy when they probably should’ve just played like they played all tournament.
Neil McGuire: It did not turn into the spectacle we all hoped for in terms of the beautiful game, but it was exciting to see all the same. Not every soccer match will be a high-scoring affair, but it was an interesting tactical battle that was fiercely contested.
CalBears.com: Was Spain the better team?
KG: Yes, I think Spain was the better team on the day. Again, if Holland would’ve just played like they had played all tournament, I think we would’ve seen a better game, a more entertaining game, and that would’ve given Holland a better chance to win the match.
NM: To my mind, Spain was the far superior team for the entire World Cup, and the only team who tried to play to win.

Random Improbable Idea
I realize that soccer will never become a full-fledged mainstream sport in America, particularly collegiately , but the World Cup has shown, much like the NCAA basketball tournament, it can captivate an American audience for a few weeks.
Is there any chance, the NCAA men’s soccer tournament could find an audience for a few weeks if they move from playing in the fall (and competing with football) to the spring/summer, hosting their tournament in June/July? Would the TV rights from such a tournament generate any substantial income?
I’m inclined to say no, but thought I’d toss it out there.
Never say never.

Funny how neither coach mentioned that Spain was also guilty of some brutish tackles, nor how Iniesta was shamelessly flopping, diving, and falling at every opportunity.
No doubt Holland was more directly physical and Spain were the better team that deserved the result, but it appears that the overall bias is that Holland were a pack of skinhead thugs while Spain were the pristine artisans.

Sorry but the Dutch performance was shocking and they should have had at least 2 red cards before halftime. You can dislike the Spanish all you want (and their reactions to Holland’s tactics) but the Dutch did nothing but reinforce their reputation as the worst bunch of thugs in World footy. De Jong and van Bommel should both be in jail.

Are you telling me that Serbia and Croatia have disbanded their teams?
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
In the past year or two, I’ve always thought Holland was the worst. Granted, that was largely based on De Jong and van Bommel (see my World Cup preview) but I saw nothing in this tournament to change my opinion.

I am inclined to politely disagree. Van Bommel is a bit old school but I don’t think he’s dirty. I do think that he played at the level he could get away with because referees weren’t calling him on it.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
What? WHAT?!?!?
Van Bommel is a bit old school but I don’t think he’s dirty
DC my man, you have lost all credibility. Von Bommel is possibly the worst cheater and dirtiest player in the WORLD. He is incredibly smart about it though, I will give him that but the guy is just filthy and not in a good way.
De Jong is just clumsy and everyone knows your ankle is likely to get broken when he is around but van Bommel, blech.

Oh come ON. The mere existence of Javier Mascherano says that van Bommel can’t be in sole possession of the title of dirtiest player in the world. De Rossi, Sergio Ramos, and any Serb who’s played for Lazio ever are also in the frame for cynical cheats. And I’m sure there’s a whole host more of English players other than the egregious and unemployed Joey Barton who make van Bommel look like a choir boy.
If van Bommel were just dirty, he wouldn’t have the career he’s had. Bruisers don’t do the Champions League and domestic double with Barcelona.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
I see Mascherano in much the same mold as von Bommel. They’re both really sneaky about it and are guys players probably love to have on their team (although did mention that von Bommel is like that in practice too) but they are dirty cheaters.

Name ONE Serbian player who would be recommended for fair play awards. And bear in mind I’m not saying this in disapproval, I may not like the way they play but I admire their resilience and toughness. I reserve the disapproval for the politics and race views of players like Sinisa Mihajlovic. And the intervening variable there is Lazio, I can’t think of one likable player that’s come through that squad for Roman crypto-fascists.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
My point wasn’t about Fair Play it was about individual non verbal nastiness on the pitch. Serbian players at Lazio may be racis but that is besides the point.
You’re just bitter because the only athletic competition Scottish people are good at is the one where the guy in a dress flips a 20 foot long log over.

He showed a pretty good connection with Riley. Pretty good weapon on posts over the middle and has solid hands. Can’t speak to his blocking, but he’s a pretty good TE. And on a team bereft of WR options, he will likely get a lot of looks

I really wasn’t thinking about a 1st rounder or anything like that. That’s rare for a TE anyway.
But isn’t Miller big enough? 6-3, 260-ish?
Speed, I don’t know. He seems to run well, but I’m no trained eye. What’s a TE expected to run in the NFL, 40-time wise?
Yes, I am an Old Blue. Now get off my lawn.
Fastest evair was Vernon Davis at 4.4.
I think decent times for a receiving TE are 4.6-4.7, fast is anything 4.5 or lower.
I think 6’3, 260 is fine weight-wise, but maybe they prefer a little taller?

He has good speed for a TE, has a knack for getting open in the seams, and has shown really good hands at times.
He’s a good enough blocker to be on the field at all times instead of being just a passing down specialist.
And, like boomtho said, until we get another proven option at WR, the other teams are going to stack the box vs. Vereen, double Jones, and dare Riley to beat us. The natural outlet for that is usually the TE.

Political question #1
I just paid for my tour to go to one of the world’s most reclusive, and by many definitions worst regimes. (No, not a tour of Walnut Creek).
That’s right – I’m going to “vacation” in the DPRK. Am I wrong for contributing money to a arms selling, terrorist supporting, batshit insane nation? Or, since I already pay taxes in China, I’ve already slid down the slippery slope? While I wrestled with the philsophy (and also the thoughts of taking a nice beach vacation in Thailand or the Philippines) I figure that once Kim Jong Il dies, the country is going to go completely insane OR normalize. It’s not really a question I considered lightly – in the past decade I have changed plans (myanmar, indonesia and . . .north korea) due to politics, so I’m not sure why this time I thought it was a good idea – however, my friend from the state department said “AWESOME IDEA. I would love to go – except for as a state department employee, I can’t” – so there’s that. He dismissed the contributing to meglomanical states – the North Koreans have plenty of money. Just no food and the populace lives in poverty. He emphasized that the minimal contact I have with North Koreans – will humanize Americans for a tiny portion of the country.
I’d like to see it while its really strange. Also, I get to see the world’s best card stunts.

I do know this will be one of the most fascinating trips that I’ve ever taken.
Go for it. As long as it’s safe, why not? It’ll be a life experience that you may not ever have a chance at again. The amount of $$$ you’re spending is such an inconsequential drop in the bucket in the grand scheme of things that I doubt it matters in terms of supporting a psycho/evil regime.
You could look at it this way – you’re actually undermining the regime by your visit by humanizing Americans like your friend said. If that results in one less person hating us a little less, then that’s money well-spent.
Irate Toothmonger - Will get all up in your business for food
I’m not really asking if I should go or not actually – I already put down my deposit and bought my tickets up to Beijing (where the tour leaves from) and took the time off work.
I must admit that my reading comp takes a hit somewhere around 2am.
So, I’ll change my mind. You’re evil, dude. E-vil!

Wait what? Is that part of the tour?
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
Ha! Unfortunately, not. But they do, apparently, go to a place called “Concrete Wall” which is at the DMZ. LeonPowe sent me his itinerary. It looks like an interesting trip, for sure.
I am also interested to see what happens when Kim Jong Il passes, which should be somewhat soon. I believe he is preparing Kim Jong Nam to take over. The problem is that when Kim Il Sung passed, he had prettty much made Kim Jong Il supreme everything like a decade earlier (and head of the army like 2 decades before that). People already had total “faith” in him. It’s unclear to me if the same thing has happened with Kimg Jong Nam. Moreover, the situation here is totally different. In 1994, North Korea hadnt fully collapsed yet (althouhg they were well on their way). Now, Kimg Jong Nam will be taking over a complete and total shell of a country and trying to rule it with an iron fist like his father/grandfather without the proper introduction. Have they even started a cult ofpersonality yet?
Kim Jong Il really fucked himself over by blowing up that South Korean sub. Now, the South Koreans cant help North Korea as much anymore. BTW, if you want to see crazylikefuck vids, check out this vid of mourning Kim Il Sung. Thousands of people in the streets of Pyongyang crying.
CGB's Jimmy Carter
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
A lot of South Koreans don’t really believe North Korea was responsible for blowing up the sub, though.
Also, due to the recent controversy over the won recalculation, North Koreans no longer have a lot of money. In fact, the vast majority of the country probably doesn’t have over $30.00 to their name. North Korea changed 100 won into 1 won, but restricted the ability for people to transfer more than $30.00 to the new won. So, it instantly wiped out the entirety of the nation’s savings accounts. Even North Korea admitted it fucked up (which is unimagianbly rare) and executed somebody.

the country is going to go completely insane OR normalize.
Why can’t it be both? No seriously, I think it’ll be both. Five years of coups, assassinations, etc., then it’ll follow any other normal 3rd world trajectory. South Korea will watch from afar with shocking abhorrence, while officially deciding that reunification isn’t worth the economic price a la the Germany reunification.
At a Sichuan dinner tonight (in a restaurant ironically decorated to look like a Maoist era factory) my NGO friends said that shit is about to hit the fan in N. Korea much harder than it did in the late 90s – he says reports are coming out that its is historical level famine – think China 1950-1952 (40 million deaths).

Well, the state run organizations stopped providing food and then recently North Korea started clamping down on private markets. I really don’t think it will ever happen, except maybe fifty years from now with a change of attitude from Beijing, unless Kim Jong X really screws the pooch and nukes or attacks a South Korean city. China wants the DPRK to be a thorn in the side of the South and the US for as absolutely long as possible. Beijing will not stand for a united Korea, as cheap labor from the North will eventually link up with manufacturing and technical expertise in the South to make the peninsula a strong, prosperous, stable ally of the west/US, the last thing China wants on its border, especially once the NKoreans wake up and realize who was enabling/supporting Kim Jong Il the entire time.

You should not feel guilty about going. I went to East Berlin back in the 1970s and it was a fascinating experience. I expect this will be even more interesting. And it’s not like the amount of money you spend is going to make or break the regime.

I was only there for a day. Even though I was with a group, the crossing was a little scary because there were lots of guys with machine guns and zero sense of humor. I knew conditions were grim in East Germany, but I wasn’t really prepared for how utterly bleak the place was. There were still bombed out buildings and rubble from World War II, more than 30 years after the war ended. There was almost nothing to buy in the stores, and people were clearly afraid to be seen talking with us, except for our official minders. I had been told about much of this, but seeing it was something different. The contrast with the vibrant and prosperous West Berlin probably made it seem even worse.

Buster Posey is the Giants catcher and McCovey Chronicles likes it.
“Buster Posey: Not a first baseman”
My favorite excuse for why Posey couldn’t catch yet was the implication that he just couldn’t call a major league game yet. I pictured Bengie Molina in front of a 8’x10’ dry-erase board the night before a game, drinking coffee and writing an 80-page treatise on how Tim Lincecum should pitch to Corey Hart, while Posey stayed up all night drinking Hawaiian Punch and designing an awesome course for Excitebike. This world view turns every catcher — every single one of them — into a scholar and savant through experience alone. Experience in this world is like a goose who nibbles at the grass of your efforts and poops out aptitude, which then fertilizes the grass of your efforts. The cycle is then complete, but please note that you can’t start the cycle until you’re in it.

Chris Cohan holding up the sale of the Dubs?
According to a source, Cohan has an offer on the table — one that exceeds $400 million — but he is holding up the deal in the hope of bumping up the sales price even further. Ellison, along with the current minority owners of the Warriors, remains the frontrunner to buy the franchise, but another candidate remains in the mix.
A Warriors source told CSNBayArea.com on Tuesday that Mandalay Entertainment Group chairman Peter Guber was the other finalist. Also involved in that group is Joe Lacob, currently a minority owner with the Boston Celtics.
Mark Mastrov, founder of 24-Hour Fitness, is no longer in the running, according to multiple sources.

Dodgers news from True Blue LA
George Sherrill placed on outright waivers
The Dodgers acquired Sherrill for third baseman Josh Bell and pitcher Steve Johnson last July 30. Bell was rated by Baseball America as Baltimore’s second-best prospect before this season. The Dodgers paid a hefty sum in both prospects and salary for Sherrill, and would be on the hook for the remainder of his $4.5 million salary if he is released. With just over five years of service time, Sherrill cannot be sent to the minors without his consent. If another team signs Sherrill, it will presumably be for a pro-rated share of the major league minimum salary of $400,000, so the most salary relief the Dodgers will see is somewhere in the $130,000 – $170,000 range.
The George Sherrill Era with the Dodgers is a perfect example of the volatility of middle relief.

Some respect for the 49ers
The Niners are ranked 5th in the Football Outsiders NFL Organizational Rankings, whatever those are
FO took a list of every player that will be 25 or younger as of September 1 and analyzed the group on issues like " upside versus established production, quantity versus quality, and current staff versus historical ability to develop rookies when it comes to evaluating the talent available to each NFL franchise."
The top of their list included the Texans, Panthers and Chiefs. What’s more intriguing is that they ranked the 49ers fifth. That ranking was obviously based quite a bit on having Patrick Willis lining up in the middle. In addition, Dashon Goldson’s big year last year certainly helped out, and they recognized Tarell Brown lurking behind Nate Clements on the depth chart. We’ve had plenty of discussion about Brown, so we’ll see how he develops in training camp.

UC Regents like the idea of an online undergraduate degree program
Not sure how I feel about this
Despite earlier warnings from professors and instructors that taking UC online would destroy the university’s good name and quality, several regents said they were convinced of just the opposite: that UC has the brainpower – and the motives – to develop the nation’s first highly selective, Web-based degree program for undergraduates.
They largely agreed with the plan’s leader, UC Berkeley Law School Dean Christopher Edley, that an online degree program could save UC money while expanding access to far-flung, tuition-paying students “from Kentucky to Kuala Lumpur.”

I’m a big believer in the 4 year undergraduate residential degree but it’s going to be either or both an anachronism or the province of the well-to-do eventually. The delivery costs for online are so much cheaper that there will be a market, plus there’s the convenience factor.
Put it this way, if there’s already an active market for online MBAs from reputable schools and an active market for associate’s and iffy BAs online at the other end of the market, how long can the middle hold?
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
I think it’d be a good idea to have a trial run where the degrees are separated, i.e., there’d be an ‘online degree’ and the regular.
Yeah, that’s along the lines of what I was thinking. If there was no intermingling, then it wouldn’t devalue the degrees from the actual physical campuses.

"We lose to Stanford in many sports, but if you want to make a Cal team quit, bring a weapon."
--Coach Clark
The Great Recession hasn’t helped them hire faculty, but I think it was a flawed concept from the start. I should say, I believe it was the first university built in the 21st century, and UC deserves kudos for that. However, Merced is a sub-optimal location and it will limit UCM from reaching the upper-echelon or even, really, the middle-echelon. If I were on such committee, I think I would have looked very carefully at Fort Bragg, Redding, Truckee, or S. Lake Tahoe as potential sites.
"We lose to Stanford in many sports, but if you want to make a Cal team quit, bring a weapon."
--Coach Clark
The difference between Trucke and S. Lake Tahoe seems minimal.
My understanding was that UC Merced was supposed to be a school for the Central Valley and an opportunity for people who live in the eastern part of the state to go to a UC without having to travel so far. Is it successful on that front at the very least?

UC Merced as a commuter UC was my understanding as well. The Merced location was chosen to serve the exploding Central Valley population. Specifically, the 99 corridor from Freson to Stockton. Now the only area of the state not serviced by a UC is extreme Northern California which doesn’t have much of a population base.
I also agree with Carp, in that if UC wanted another University and needs to attract faculty, the Lake Tahoe Basin would have been much better. Fort Bragg is nice, but it is so isolated from the greater population of California that it fails logistically. Problem is, UC wanted a commuter school, which what I thought the Cal State system is for.
UC Fresno probably would’ve been a better choice. It’s way bigger, and it still is centrally located enough to serve the area from Bakersfield to Stockton.

The Merced location was chosen to serve the exploding Central Valley population. Specifically, the 99 corridor from Fresno to Stockton
Then why the hell is is so far off the 99? :)
Seriously though, it’s like a good 10 miles off the highway. And there’s nothing between it and the highway, just empty land! Why couldn’t they build it closer?
CGB: Wasting Your Potential, Your Time, & Your Life Since 2006.
In looking at the google map aerial photo, I speculate that the land between the site and the freeway is owned privately, farmer or otherwise. I further speculate the site is either county land (judging from the reservoir in its proximity) or former state land. Also, it is much easier to build things in unincorporated areas, with the campus located outside of the actual city limits of Merced city. Cal Poly SLO is the same way.
According to Willie Brown he’s the reason why UC Merced is in Merced.
http://articles.sfgate.com/2009-04-12/bay-area/17191441_1_uc-merced-lady-s-staff-first-lady
When the University of California started making noises about adding a campus, I quickly figured out that it would be a real political plus to put it somewhere in the Central Valley.
I knew that if I ever pulled it off, it would make me bigger than the head of the National Rifle Association with the people down there.
The question was where. Bakersfield? Fresno? Modesto? I never saw any of the sites, but I studied all the proposals meticulously and we settled on Merced. I finally visited the campus for the first time Monday, having been invited down there to speak.
If I had any clue of the location, I probably would never have supported it. It’s almost three hours from anywhere.
Wille Brown does though have a habit of claiming credit for a lot of things he had no part in.

Declaring Shenanigans
How can you study a proposal meticulously and not know where it is? That shit is on the cover page of any building documents in map form, not to mention the word Merced should tip him off to its location.
Actually, if I recall correctly, the last two standing were Redding and Merced. I was all excited — a UC in my backyard. Then Merced won.
I guess it worked out in my favor; I ended up at Cal, and Merced didn’t even open until after I graduated.
Member of the Lost Tribe of Mooch
Redding, with Shasta/Lassen nearby, ~70k population would have been a good idea. Plus, it really serves a need between I-80 and Oregon.
I think one of the best ideas, if possible, would have been to buy/lease-to-own Cal Poly SLO from CSU.
"We lose to Stanford in many sports, but if you want to make a Cal team quit, bring a weapon."
--Coach Clark
Also, there’s two universities in the north part of the state — Chico and Humboldt. Growing up in Redding, I always thought of Eureka and the coast as a whole different world because getting there was a three and a half hour journey over a winding narrow mountain highway (299, for those familiar with the area). So the closest state university is Chico, which is an hour and a half away and a long commute from Redding. (I watched Mom do it to get her bachelor’s degree. It was heck on her and the family.)
The closest UC is, of course, UC Davis. And Redding’s approximately 100,000 people now. We could have been well served by a UC up there, but Merced got it and then the state’s just completely run out of money, so I don’t think we’ll ever see one. Too bad.

Can someone please let Governor Schwarzenegger know that I am interested in this job?
Fortuitous news on this day of the politics ban being lifted from CGB.
Chief Justice Ronald George to retire from California Supreme Court
Ronald George, California’s chief justice since 1996 and author of the ruling that briefly legalized same-sex marriage in the state, said Wednesday he will retire in January – a surprise announcement that allows Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to choose his successor.
George, 70, has been a judge for 38 years and a member of the state Supreme Court since Gov. Pete Wilson appointed him in 1991.
In interviews since the May 2008 same-sex marriage ruling, George had indicated he planned to seek another 12-year term in November. But he said Wednesday he’s decided to step down – not because of sporadic threats of an opposition campaign, or more lucrative work in the private sector, but to have time for himself and his family after years of seven-day workweeks.

Official: Chicken Came Before the Egg
Researchers at Sheffield and Warwick Universities, worked years on the project and now claim to have the proof the need to say the chicken came first. The scientists found that a protein found only in a chicken’s ovaries is necessary for the formation of the egg.The egg can therefore only exist if it has been created inside a chicken.
The protein speeds up the development of the hard shell, which is essential in protecting the delicate yolk and fluids while the chick grows inside the egg, the report said.

Best/Worst Case Scenario for Cal
Ted Miller posted his best worst case scenario for Cal.
And is this a shout out to CGB???
A Cal fan writes a 58,345-word essay on TCGB about how the Bears got screwed out of the Rose Bowl in 2004 because of old-school Texas politicking.
He actually mention CGB twice. Feel the love everyone.
A Cal fan then writes a 11,000-word essay on The California Golden Blogs, the gist of which is Riley only needs to beat UCLA for the Bear nation to finally believe in him.

The post, in my opinion, rather cleverly juxtaposed what we deem as “performance” between that which Kevin Riley displayed on the football field versus that which Nathan Longshore displayed at his place of non-athletic employment, post graduation. The “humor” (as it is called) factors in when one considers that one usually compares apples to apples, ie, the American football playing careers at the University of California, Berkeley, between the aforementioned players, and not say, accomplishments on the football field versus accomplishments as a father, accomplishments as an employee, accomplishments as a citizen, etc.

Teddy's conclusion to the "best case"
The Alamo Bowl picks Cal over Stanford. The opponent? Texas. A Cal fan writes a 58,345-word essay on TCGB about how the Bears got screwed out of the Rose Bowl in 2004 because of old-school Texas politicking. A Texas fan shows up and demonstrates that, mathematically, the changes in the poll votes had little to no affect. Bears fans are irritated but respect the math skills and everyone becomes great friends.
“Who cares?” Riley says about the 2004 controversy. He then throws three TD passes in a 28-20 win. Cal finished 10-3 and ranked 10th.

I’m going to London later this summer, I had a choice between Emerites (and stopping over in Dubai) and Cathay Pacific (and stopping through Hong Kong).
Also, I boringly chose Hong Kong. It was $50 cheaper – plus the Dubai stopover was 9 hours.
That’s plenty of time to drive to the city, check it out, and make your connection. I bet you wouldn’t really need much more time in Dubai than that.

Wall Street Expectations: Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters estimate Goldman Sachs will report a profit of $2.14 a share on revenue of $9.46 billion

Ancient sea life discovered off of Oz:
SYDNEY (AFP) – Australian scientists have discovered bizarre prehistoric sea life hundreds of kilometres below the Great Barrier Reef, in an unprecedented mission to document species under threat from ocean warming.
Ancient sharks, giant oil fish, swarms of crustaceans and a primitive shell-dwelling squid species called the Nautilus were among the astonishing life captured by remote controlled cameras at Osprey Reef.
Lead researcher Justin Marshall Thursday said his team had also found several unidentified fish species, including “prehistoric six-gilled sharks” using special low-light sensitive cameras which were custom designed to trawl the ocean floor, 1,400 metres (4,593 feet) below sea level.
“Some of the creatures that we’ve seen we were sort of expecting, some of them we weren’t expecting, and some of them we haven’t identified yet,” said Marshall, from the University of Queensland.
“There was a shark that I really wasn’t expecting, which was a false cat shark, which has a really odd dorsal fin.”

Paul Allen pledges “most” of his fortune to charity
Whatever you want to say about the Evil Empire, Gates and Allen are really trying to use their money to make a positive impact on the world. good for them.
As long as it includes making the Blazers a publicly held company like the Packers I’m all for this!
In all seriousness, Allen seems to be a pretty good guy. As a lifelong Blazers fan, I’ve appreciated his dedication to opening up his wallet to make the team “better” even when his GM’s can’t get it right.
The Gates Foundation has made tremendous strides in global health. It’s unfortunate that people cannot see that.
7
I think most people can? The longest ovation at the Gates-Jobs joint appearance a couple of years ago was for Gates discussing his foundation, iirc.
Sorry, I should clarify.
It’s unfortunate that idealogues cannot see that. Gates is a vilified person due to his wealth, and I’ve definitely heard his name dragged through the mud to serve as an example of why wage inequality is bad.

Well, if tax cuts are viewed as contributing to the deficit, but necessary for economic growth, and extending unemployment benefits are viewed as contributing to the deficit, but not necessary for economic growth, then that doesn’t really scream hypocrisy to me… personally speaking.

Yeah but Republicans seem to believe that tax cuts are magical and don’t contribute to the deficit. Either that, or they will say anything to advance their preferred ideology of tax cuts.

Hey, Mr. PoliSci, a republic doesn’t mean democracy, either direct or indirect. A republic simply means a government with no monarch and some participation by at least a portion of the population. Historically, republics have often been oligarchies.

So you’re saying they’re lying?
“That’s been the majority Republican view for some time,” Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told TPMDC this afternoon after the weekly GOP press conference. “That there’s no evidence whatsoever that the Bush tax cuts actually diminished revenue. They increased revenue, because of the vibrancy of these tax cuts in the economy. So I think what Senator Kyl was expressing was the view of virtually every Republican on that subject.”
So… McConnell, Kyl, Cornyn, Gregg… They’re saying things they don’t believe?

Sigh, CFN/Scout Utter Fail
Projected Top Reserves: For the moment, junior Nate Montana will get the No. 2 job. Joe Montana’s son is 6-4 and 200 pounds, and has a live, accurate arm, but he was inconsistent throughout spring ball and didn’t come up with a good performance until the spring game. He started out his career with the Irish, transferred to Pasadena City College rather than sit on the bench behind Jimmy Clausen, and now he’s back and showing some decent flashes. He walked on, and now he needs to be ready in case Dayne Crist’s knee isn’t healthy, and he has to be sharp with a slew of good prospects waiting in the wings.
Nick Montana is a Husky.
This has since been removed, but…wow, someone actually wrote this.
New recuit Matt James might not be an elite prospect, but he was on everyone’s list of the best tackles of this year’s recruiting class with the size and frame to sit at one tackle spot for 4 years. At 6-7 and 291 pounds, the Cincinnati native followed Brian Kelly to South Bend and will get a long look at playing time right away on the outside. Even though he’s tall, he’s physical for the ground game and does a good job of shoving people around.

Dick Cheney might not have long to live
I’m a surgeon and just read your wire story about Dick Cheney getting a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) placed. The story downplays the seriousness of that procedures…once you’ve got an LVAD in place, it means your heart is essentially incapable of working on its own and has no potential to improve. While LVAD outcomes have been improving, and some patients live months or even years with one of these devices in place, this is a HUGE operation with MAJOR associated morbidity and mortality. If he’s not listed for a heart transplant, his days are seriously numbered. Life on an LVAD isn’t something I’d wish on my worst enemy…an axiom that this situation really tests. He’s in for a rough time.

There’s some great summaries of the two congressional versions out there (prepared by law firms and other similiar groups), but all I’ve seen on this final version is news stories announcing the progress and some suggested meeting points on the two big sections the Senate had differently than the House (The Volcker and Lincoln Amendments).
If there’s interest on CGB, I can link to some good insight on just what is happening based on the bills and what not, but if it’s just CBKWit, I can send an e-mail or something.

Responding here so that there's more space if people actually want to talk about it.
I know a decent amount about the derivatives portions of the bill, because that’s where my research is focused. But I don’t know as much about the other sections (it’s times like this I wish we still had danzig).
Most of the details are left to the regulatory agencies to work out within a certain time frame from the end of the bill, so most of the impact will be vague (probably for a year from enactment) and even then we won’t see the true impact for a couple years to follow.
Here is a great section by section breakdown of the two bills side by side.
Here’s a WSJ description of the major provisions.
The biggest points of contention between the two bills came from what are known as the Volcker Amendment and Lincoln Amendment, both of which were included in the Senate version, but not the house.
The Volcker Amendment (aka the Volcker Rule or Merkley-Levin Amendment) was proposed by Paul Volcker, former chairman of the fed and current Obama financial advisor. It’s designed to limit the the risk FDIC insured banks are able to take on, and in that respect it’s viewed as a second round of Glass-Steagall. I’m not sure exactly how harsh the final version of this rule will be in the bill, but it is included in some form. For more information on this you can look up the Merkley-Levin Amendment as they were the two Senators who drafted the language for the Senate bill. Here’s an article with some summary of the tensions around the rule.
The Lincoln Amendment is kind of a similar focus. It bars banks from trading directly in derivatives and would force them to spin off their swaps desks to separately held companies. There is quite a bit of derivative regulation separate from this in the bill (for example establishing clearinghouses). The “goal” of the amendment is to prevent federal emergency funds from going to derivatives trading organizations, trying to wall off that risk, but it’s unclear how effective it would/will be. It looks like a watered down version of this made it into the final bill, but I’m not sure yet how much it was watered down.
Does anyone else have any insight or familiarity with the bill? If anyone’s got questions I’ll answer as best I can.
The The is above making sense.

YF works with those very derivatives… or so he’s implied
I’m guessing that ratings agency reforms weren’t mentioned anywhere? I vaguely remember a ruling apart from the bill awhile back.
o=========<| BBBBBBEARZZZZZZ
by Thoroughbred on Jul 15, 2010 1:22 PM PDT up reply actions
I don’t think that the bill directly regulates them, but it does provide a cause of action for plaintiffs. In a lot of ways that’s actually more intimidating for the rating agencies. In my opinion, litigation is a lot more intimidating to their business model than regulation. Each bill had a different standard for behavior, and I’m going off memory on this right now, since I actually have to get some work done for a bit. I’m pretty sure that the Senate version had either a knowing or reckless standard, and the House bill held them to a grossly negligent standard.
That should open the doors to litigation, but there has never been liability for rating agencies, and no court has ever penalized them for a bad rating. The general contention is that they are just issuing opinions that are protected by the first amendment.
The The is above making sense.
So the daisy chain continues… Thank you for your contribution

by Thoroughbred on Jul 15, 2010 1:32 PM PDT up reply actions
I’ve never heard the saying “the daisy chain continues” before, but I’m not sure that’s an entirely correct characterization. Were the rating agencies to be held to a grossly negligent standard (one of the few parts of the bill where the House version was more aggressive than the Senate version), it could actually have a big impact on ratings. Like I said, legislation can have a bigger impact on them than regulation.
The The is above making sense.

I think you may find this article interesting. It’s a proposal for a user fee system to intervene in the connection between rating agencies and the companies to which they are providing ratings.
The The is above making sense.
Also, I think I should say at this point, I’m just giving my understanding of the bill and opinions of possible results. I don’t work in the financial industry, and my experience is limited to casual knowledge and the research that I’m doing. I know YF and Rishi probably can’t jump in this conversation for proprietary reasons, but if anyone disagrees or has information I haven’t included, please let me know. I don’t really think this conversation will degrade to less than cordial, so tell me I’m wrong!

"UC Davis??? hahahahaha" - Aaron Rodgers
by atomsareenough on Jul 15, 2010 5:30 PM PDT up reply actions
The CFPA was in both bills and so I’m pretty sure it’s in the version from today. The CFPA is important and has the ‘backing’ of both parties, but there’s a disagreement over how it will be implemented. Republicans don’t want it to be an independent agency, comparing it to problems with the EPA.
Given that the conference started with the Senate text of the bill, it’s probably going to be closer to that version. But what concessions are made will really depend on which of the Senate Republicans cross the aisle to reach 60.

Indian Rupee gets a new symbol!
[1]
Money! The government of India today unveiled a new international symbol representing its currency, the rupee. It resembles the English letter ‘R’ with its left vertical stalk removed and with two parallel horizontal lines intersecting the top curving portion.
The new symbol for the rupee, held by its designer, research scholar D. Udaya Kumar.Previously, the symbol for the rupee was a non-distinctive “Rs” or “Re,” which also could be used to refer to the currencies in Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka, as One India News points out. The Indian government hopes the new symbol will highlight the country’s burgeoning role as a global economic power player.

So all I have to do is mint some currency and have a new logo to highlight my burgeoning role as a global economic power player? I’ll be looking for the DPRK Won to have a new logo soon.

Awesome writeup of Allen Crabbe by Dr. Saturday
Crabbe is the centerpiece of a decorated five-man recruiting class that Cal coach Mike Montgomery hopes will soften the blow of losing the core of a team that produced the Bears’ first conference title in more than five decades. Pac-10 player of the year Jerome Randle graduated, productive starters Patrick Christopher, Theo Robertson and Jamal Boykin are also gone and rotation players D.J. Seeley and Omondi Amoke transferred.
Although Harper Kamp’s return from a knee injury gives Cal a legit back-to-the-basket scorer and Jorge Gutierrez is a scrappy perimeter defender, there will be plenty of opportunity for the incoming freshmen to contribute immediately. Crabbe has blossomed from a stand-still shooter into a dynamic scorer, point guard Gary Franklin and small forward Alex Rossi can both stretch a defense and explosive late signee Emerson Murray flew under the radar as a result of an ankle injury.
