CGB Hall Of Fame: The Play Players v. Sandy Barbour
Another exciting installment of the CGB Hall Of Fame. Last week, we had some intense matchups like DeSean Jackson v. Jahvid Best. DeSean won. And Glenn Seaborg continued his controversial run through the competition, defeating Steve Bartkowski, Cal's sole #1 overall NFL Draft pick.
Today, we have another great matchup: The Play Players v. Sandy Barbour.
The Play Players beat Hardy Nickerson and then upset #1 overall seed Jerome Randle in a shocker
Sandy Barbour beat David Ortega and then Desmond Bishop.
So, vote early and vote often! Voting ends on Friday at noon PST. You can see the entire bracket here.
The Play Players
Norcalnick talks about The Play.
Moen to Rodgers to Garner to Rodgers to Ford to Moen. Like pi to math majors, every Cal fan should know the sequence. But how exactly did a last second victory in a game with no real national significance become so legendary, so mythical?
When I was 9 I went to my first Big Game and watched Cal win. Having been hooked on Cal football, I then saw Cal lose 7 straight times. My Mom, the consummate pessimistic yet loyal Cal fan, would hold up The Play as our desperate Cal fan trump card. Lose 7 in a row to the ‘furd? So what, we have The Play. Go a decade without a bowl? Whatevs, we have The Play. No Rose Bowl berths in either of our lifetimes? No worries, we have The Play.
For 20 years between The Play and Tedford, it was our one shining moment in a sea of football pain and misery. Whenever the Big Game was in Palo Alto my mom would play a tape that analyzed The Play, including an introduction, the CALX call of the game (which is significantly more confusing even than Starkey’s call) and player interviews. We played it to piss off the Stanford fans, because THEY LOST ON THE PLAY!
Every once in a while ESPN or Sports Illustrated will have some silly internet voting for the greatest play in college (or sports) history. Despite a biased voting public, The Play almost always wins. Nothing can match 6 laterals against your biggest rival with the most insane band in America on the field.
It is here that we must mention the unfortunate part of our story: Mariet Ford, he of the psychic blind lateral, is currently behind bars for the murder of his wife and 35 month old son. The Chronicle has a long profile on Ford, detailing the glory of The Play and his fall from grace.
Now, in 2009, with 6 straight bowl games and perennial conference title contention, maybe The Play isn’t as important as it used to be. We don’t need to hang our hat on one moment. Or, maybe The Play will remain as a moment that defines Cal athletes and fans alike with the attitude that the Bear will not quit, the Bear will not die.
And if you ever wondered if The Play was ‘the most amazing, sensational, dramatic, heart-rending... exciting, thrilling finish in the history of college football,’ I’ll leave you with this:
For many years, John Elway was bitter, on both a personal level and on behalf of his team, about the touchdown being allowed: "This was an insult to college football... They [the officials] ruined my last game as a college football player."
Sandy Barbour
norcalnick runs down what Sandy has done the past half-decade at Cal.
I’m not familiar with all of Cal’s ADs, but her list of accomplishments would probably rank her near the top: -Retained Tedford with a contract extension
-Hired Mike Montgomery
-Kept Joanne Boyle in Berkeley
-Shepherded the Athletic Department through the tree sitter fiasco and now the SAHPC and Memorial retrofit is well on it’s way.
-Is presiding over perhaps the most successful collective run in Cal sports, at least based on Director’s Cup standings.

What a coincidence….I was seated in Sec. H, Row 49, seat 9. I still have these seats (30+ years).
I’m willing to bet you weren’t “seated” when The Play was unfolding!
Yes, I am an Old Blue. Now get off my lawn.
I always wondered what the Play was like tow itness live. Wasn’t there like a 5 minute delay while the refs determined whether it counted?
BTW, to bring things full circle, in the EA Sports commercial, they have Elway talking about how in his college football laterals are illegal or some such thing with video of the Play occurring. GO BEARS!

It was very confusing. I wasn’t absolutely convinced we had won until the cannon finally went off.
Exit, Pursued By A Bear
I know a guy who was a freshman at Cal when he attended the 1982 Big Game. He told me he left after the Harmon FG. He wondered WTF was going on when he heard noise and then the cannon going off as he was walking back to the dorm.
Witness to history fail.

A columnist in the SF Examiner (I don’t remember who – but he was non-sports) wrote a column a couple of days later saying that he had convinced his girlfriend to leave the game after the field goal to “beat the traffic,” even though she wanted to stay. They heard what happened while listening to the radio as they walked toward their car. He said that on the drive home she kept repeating over and over “I’ll never forgive you for this as long as I live.” I’ve always wondered if they broke up over it.

That definitely sounds like my wedding night!

Barbour deserves to move to the next round
…if for no other reason than she has been instrumental in seizing the moment and the momentum in reversing more than a half century of institutional inertia.
This is no small accomplishment: understanding when you’ve been presented with a critical moment in time to make a lasting and significant difference to an institution, its alumni and community. Sandy Barbour’s accomplishments and vision of what Cal’s Athletic Department can be will be a lasting foundation for decades to come.
This is not to denigrate one of the signature moments in California history, but The Play, as incredible, miraculous, wonderful, and glorious as it is, simply doesn’t stack up against an athletic director who has the vision, foresight and organziational skills to return California to the ranks of perennial national powers.
