Pretty ragged affair. Bad defense, bad offense, looks like two teams trying not to get injured.

I thought our passing looked tremendous. Findlay may not have finished, but he was very disruptive. Hope that injury at the end wasn’t anything serious.

Spelling Bee INDIAN THREE PEAT!
Shantanu Srivatsa and Anamika Veeramani sat nervously, side by side on stage.
Once again, an Indian-American was going to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee. It was just a matter of what word and what time on Friday.
Shantanu, 13, an eighth-grader from West Fargo, N.D., stepped to the microphone first and couldn’t spell “ochidore.”
Anamika — showing the cool demeanor she kept throughout — kept her hands behind her back and rattled off the correct letters for the medical term “stromuhr.” She didn’t crack a smile until the trophy was presented.
“It was too surreal,” she said. “It was an amazing experience. I usually have a poker face, so that’s what that was.”
The 14-year-old girl from North Royalton, Ohio, won the 83rd bee, claiming the trophy and more than $40,000 in cash and prizes — some of which she says she intends to spend.
She also became the third consecutive Indian-American bee champion.
Email: bearsnecessities@gmail.com
I think it’s unfair. I mean, a kid who has to know to spell Anamika Veeramani at age 4 or so is certainly going to have a lifetime advantage over Ruby Jones, no?
I hope to raise an Indian-American spelling bee champion someday.

Not likely. But you’re welcome to try. :)
All too often, I see kids who are pushed by helicopter parents to over-invest their time in academic pursuits at the expense of balanced activities. The kids may be book-smart as hell, but they’re actually almost stunted in terms of inter-personal skills. Pretty sad, really.
But hey, if little atoms is naturally brilliant, has a gift for spelling, and enjoys it as an activity, then why the heck not?

Beer dying a slow death?
In an earlier post, I noted that beer consumption outside the craft sector was down significantly. It’s a point worth elaborating on, because there is solid evidence that a big change is afoot in American alcohol consumption.
According to a recent article in Ad Age, sales of Bud Light are down 5.3 percent in 2010, while Miller Lite is down 7.5 percent. In fact, only four of the top 30 brands saw sales increase. These are not slight changes. For an industry that relies on slow and steady annual growth, they represent a full-blown crisis.
Ad Age, and the brewing industry, pin the blame on the economy—the target audience, 21- to 35-year-olds, are being hit hardest by unemployment, they say, so they have less to spend on booze. To back that up, Ad Age points to increased sales of the cheap stuff, like PBR and Yuengling, and it explains away the craft numbers by arguing that buyers are “saving their consumption for a special occasion by splurging on craft-style beers.”

Actually, a little bit.
I had just gotten in from Wuhan a few hours earlier and then my friends were out at this place so I went out to join them. After 1.5 hours of pointless conversation and staring at the attractive bartender, we all called it. So went, home, saw someone getting in the elevator, ahead, so rushed through the lobby.
She hit her floor button and it took me a second to register, since I was tired. So then I looked at her and gave a “Hey, are you Annie?”
she then corrected me with her real name.
She then mentioned that she saw me riding my bike last week.
“Hey, we should hang out sometime” – then I gave her my card. My job isn’t that interesting, but company I work for seldom fails to elicit interest (yes I have used my job to try to pick up women before). Appropriately she said “Oh, you work THERE . . . COOOOL!!!!”
Tried to play it off (“oh, its not that big a deal”). Got her number on my iPhone. Confirmed it. Elevator started to beep (we were on my floor). She said “Let’s hang out this week – I’ll email you”

I know I shouldn’t judge, but willingly leaving school your senior year is always a mistake. Spend one more year, get your degree (even if its a degree like history), then follow your heart. One year is not that much time, and 10 years down the road it will be a LOT tougher to complete that final year.
Oh the one exception is if you leave school to become a professional athlete. Your body has a very short window to earn money, make as much as you if you can during that span.

I’m not bouncing off the wall happy, but content. Would have liked a big name with experience, but there simply weren’t any available. I’d prefer taking Thibadibba as a head coach in spite of his lack of head coaching experience, over a has been like Lawrence Frank, Mo Cheeks, or Kevin McHale who had the opportunity to coach, and netted consistently marginal results. In short, he was my favourite for what was available.
Thibs seems to have the respect of the big three in Boston and a few other high profile stars, so that bodes well.

The race for the W's gets interesting
So, according to Tim Kawakami of the Murky News (via an interesting short piece on si.com), Uncle Larry has teamed up with the minority owners of the Warriors for his bid, which probably puts him in super-duper first place to buy our beleaguered superheroes.
It was always presumed that Ellison would end up with the team if he actively pursued the Warriors, and that’s what he’s doing. But, as expected, he’s not doing it recklessly, and he’s not going to bid against himself. That’s where the 20-percenters are important. As a top-level source said a few days ago, “they’re in play.”
The minority investors bought their stake in July 2004 for about $60 million (based on a franchise valuation of slightly less than $300 million), have all attended scores of games and several of them have been spotted at practices in the Warriors facility.
They are: Jim Davidson, co-CEO of Silver Lake, an investment firm based in Menlo Park; Fred Harman, managing director of Oak Investment Partners, based in Palo Alto; Michael Marks, founding partner of Riverwood Capital, based in Menlo Park; and John Thompson, chairman of the board of Symantec Corp., based in Mountain View.
They’re key players in the sales process because they have so much institutional knowledge, because they have a relationship with Ellison, and because of the terms of their investment.
Any potential buyer must be prepared to buy 100 percent of the team. The bid must account for the minority stake, unless the 20-percenters cut a separate deal, which gives them their leverage. Let’s say that another finalist bidder—possibly 24-Hour Fitness founder Mark Mastrov — can come up with a competitive bid for 80 percent of the team, but not necessarily for 100 percent. If Ellison locks up the 20-percenters, he essentially forces Mastrov to go to a higher number than he wants (for the full 100 percent instead of 80) or drop out of the bidding.
Wonder if we’ll see that Raiderette on the dance team?!?
Brilliant move. And in a very un-Warriors fan like manner, I’m actually starting to believe that this is going to happen.
I must be overly tired…But I read both articles and can’t figure out how a Raiderette plays into this. I must be forgetting something or missing a reference?
Firm-jawed and ready to extract the Poisonous Fangs of Communism
No way will he retire (willingly) with a year and a few million left on his contract. He’ll force them to fire him. My guess is that the new owners (hopefully Ellison) will clean house completely and bring an entirely new management team + coaching staff.

Two Latest Rumors for Expansion
Chip Brown wrote a new article here:
Unfortunately, it is behind a paywall, and I don’t know specifically what it says. At burntorangenation and cornnation they said there are two key points:
1) Missouri and Nebraska have until Friday to let the Big-XII know if they are leaving (Missouri is pretty much out the door, while Nebraska is hesitant). Considering the Big-10 may not send out invites for several months, this would involve at least a minor gamble on the parts of Nebraska and Missouri.
2) A small sect of politicians in Texas are attempting to force Baylor into the Pac-16 at the expense of Colorado. Here is the quote from burntorangenation:
Already, the political forces in Texas are preparing to make demands that if six schools from the Big 12 are going to be invited to the Pac-10, Baylor should replace Colorado on that list, according to two sources close to the situation.
“If you’re going to have an exported commodity involved in this, do you think we’re going to allow a school from outside the state of Texas to replace one of our schools in the Big 12 South? I don’t think so. We’re already at work on this,” said a high-ranking member of the Texas Legislature who asked not to be identified.
I also enjoyed the commentary from bon:
Please, for the love of God, if any pro-Texas, pro-A&M and pro-Tech legislators happen to be reading this, if your combined weight in the Legislature can’t keep Baylor from mucking this up (and I’m pretty sure adding Baylor mucks this up), then each and every one of you needs a testicular transplant immediately. (Unless, of course, you are a female legislator. Then I don’t know what kind of surgery you’d need.)
From what I’ve gathered on other sites, 15 politicians are in the mix supporting Baylor. A quick wikipedia search reveals the Texas senate to have 31 members and the Texas house of representatives 150. I don’t know which the 15 Baylor supporters belong to. Also, of note politically, Ann Richards was the driving force behind Baylor’s inclusion in the Big-XII, at the time she was governor. The current Texas governor, Rick Perry, is an alumnus of Texas A&M, the Lt. Governor David Dewhurst is from Texas but is an alum and played basketball for Arizona.
I can foresee the Pac-10’s response to the unnamed Texas legislature’s quote as being:
do you think we’re going to allow a small, non-secular, private school into the Pac-10? I don’t think so.
Personally, if Pac-10 doesn’t even consider BYU on the grounds its a non-secular private school with little research, I don’t see us letting in Baylor, even if it means losing Texas and the others. BYU would give a large and devoted fan base with strong ties to the west coast, Baylor gives us absolutely nothing. Any market Baylor delivers would have already been provided for by Texas, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech. Furthermore, losing Colorado means reducing the total number of people in our new footprint by 4.3 million, while adding zero.
The Pac-10 might posture such a stance, but do you really think, if it comes down to it, they would allow Baylor over Colorado to keep them from landing Texas?
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Do I think the majority would? No. Do I think Stanford might? I definitely do. And we need a unanimous vote.
According to the front page Golden Nuggets story, the Pac10 has given Scott “all the authority he needs.” Stanford wants the money as much as any other Pac10 school.
CGB's Jimmy Carter
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
According to Scott himself, he has “the authority to take it in different directions, depending on various scenarios and discussions we’re going to have.” Though that’s good, and probably more than the Presidents have empowered any other Pac10 leader, that doesn’t sound like carte blanche.
Point of reference on money: Stanford doesn’t need it, and all the public schools do (I have no view into USC’s finances, but I’m guessing they’re fine.)
Our state funding plus fee income equals roughly $770M per year to support our 35,000+ students. Stanford’s tuition income alone equals approximately the same amount, to support their 18,500 students. This money represents half of Cal’s income, and 1/4 of Stanford’s.
In addition to that, we have an endowment of $2.3B to help run our university. Stanford has an endowment of $12.6B to help run their university. This income from this more than doubles their tuition money, before they even get into annual bequests (of $640M) and federal funding (of which they get $130M more than we do). Even though their endowment has taken some big investment hits in the past two years, they can afford to be a lot more picky than any other Pac-10 school. For all the humanities majors, what I am laying out here is that Stanford has four times as much money to spend per student as Cal does.
I’m not saying I don’t think the expansion will happen. I’m just saying a Texas insistence on Baylor, rather than another AAU institution, could be a HUGE sticking point, and that we need to be careful about assuming all the Presidents are uniformly in support of this. We have seen one screw it up before. Could easily happen again. It will all be much easier if the Texas legislature minds their own beeswax.

My understanding is that Stanford athletics has money trouble. Last year, they had to fire some people:
Stanford Athletics will reduce its workforce by 13 percent, minimizing the impact to student-athletes while aiming to cope with an anticipated $5.4 million shortfall in revenue over the next three years.
The budget reductions include the elimination of 21 staff positions out of 163 in administrative and service areas, including facilities and operations, external relations, physical education and recreation. Coaching staff members are not affected by the cuts, nor are employees who are represented by bargaining units. Most staff reductions will take effect March 2.
“Our student-athletes are the heart of our programs, and we want to minimize any reductions which might have a direct negative effect on our ability to field championship caliber teams,” said Bob Bowlsby, the Jaquish & Kenninger Director of Athletics.
In order to minimize the impact on student-athletes, approximately $1.5 million has already been eliminated from the current fiscal year budget, primarily in administrative areas. Stanford Athletics has identified almost $2.5 million in programmatic budget cuts that include freezing open positions, mandatory use of vacation accruals, reduced facility maintenance and reduced travel expenses. In addition to reducing costs, Stanford Athletics is examining all potential sources for additional revenue, including ticket sales, multimedia rights and facility use fees.
Regarding the Scott situation, neither of us are privy as to the discussions. However, ESPN made it seem to me as if they gave him carte blanch. So, I don’t know.
Also, the Baylor stuff seems to be just sour grapes from some Texas politicians. My understanding is that Texas is not as big on Baylor coming. Maybe I am more optimistic than you, but I see a situation where basically Stanford has said “Let’s do this” and Baylor’s temper tantrum will not amount to much. I hope to god I am right! We’ll see, I guess.
CGB's Jimmy Carter
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
Which power, if any, do these politicians have in this process? Do they have veto rights? Does Texas or any of the other state schoolsneed to get the legislature’s approval? Also, regarding that comment about the small non-secular private school, in many ways Stanford is a small, non-secular private school. They teach the Gospel Of Satan and are small and private. So, Baylor wouldn’t be too far off.
CGB's Jimmy Carter

Politicians have what they usually have: No brains, loud mouths, and desperate needs for votes
Cooler than a Polar Bear's toenails.
I appreciate that, but in this specifc situation, what role do they have? Can they veto this process? Can they force Baylor in? Or is this just Kabuki theatre-style grandstanding with no real world purpose?
CGB's Jimmy Carter
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
They can threaten to cut funding to the state schools. Fortunately, everyone on the Texas board is:
(A) completely against it
(B) confident Baylor doesn’t have the political power to force their way in.
Also, someone linked a non-paywall link of the article, with details on the Pac-10 meetings and the different proposals made by Scott.
http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news?slug=rivals-378917
I’ve also seen some speculation (might be just from journalists, or whatever) that perhaps the Pac-10 would take both Colorado and Baylor over someone like Oklahoma State. We already have an orange and black OSU, and Okie State’s academic rankings would put them near or at the bottom of the Pac-16. Oklahoma legislators might try and keep Oklahoma from leaving without it’s little brother, but if Texas and Nebraska are gone, the Sooners daren’t stay behind.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

Expansion isn’t the only agenda on Scott’s plate. He said he will unveil a series of marketing initiatives at the July 27 media day that will include airing Pac-10 games in Asian countries.
“The West Coast is the gateway to the Pacific Rim,” Scott said. “We’ve got a lot of student-athletes with Asian roots.
