As a coda to the USA Sevens Collegiate Rugby Championship, USA Rugby named ten Cal Bears to its All-American and Honorable Mention sides. Being named as an All-American has long been a precursor to international honors, with many All-Americans graduating to the Eagles, the US national team.
Cal is the single largest contributor to this year's elite side.
Nine Bears were given the nod as All-Americans and one was named as an Honorable Mention. Among Cal's nominees were eight seniors, one sophomore and one freshman.
“With a pool of approximately 15,000 men’s collegiate players across the U.S., the Collegiate All-American selectors and coaches spent nearly nine months on player identification, fitness testing, standards implementation and monitoring to narrow the list to 37 All-Americans and 29 Honorable Mentions,” said All-American Coach Alex Magleby.
The three Bears named to the 17-man All-American forwards pool included:
Derek Asbun - Senior
Danny Barrett - Sophomore
Eric Fry - Senior
Arkansas State also had three ruggers selected for the forwards squad. Two BYU Cougars were named as well.
Cal senior Drew Hyjer was named as an Honorable Mention forward.
Six of the 20 players on the All-American backs roster hail from Cal, including:
Keegan Englebrecht - Senior
Sean Gallinger - Senior
Colin Hawley - Senior
Seamus Kelly - Freshman
Dustin Muhn - Senior
Blaine Scully - Senior
BYU, Utah, San Diego State and Texas A&M each had two backs selected as All-Americans.
