Will the final Pac-10 invitation go to Texas A&M, Utah or Kansas?
Final bit of expansion news for the week: Word is that if the Aggies continue to drag their feet or pine for that SEC bid, the conference will extend their hand to Kansas, with their long storied basketball program and generally better academic tradition. Who would you prefer to see join the conference?
The Utes might not be out of the running either. (HT Block U!)

AtM, Utah, Kansas but I don’t really care which one it is. I like the Utah-Colorado thing combined with the OK and TX schools. SLC is bigger and if TV is really driving this thing, than I think it will be them. Doesn’t Kansas always choke in March Madness anyways?

Scheduling-wise, Utah or Kansas make more sense because then you get 8 pairs of obvious travel partners, useful for all sorts of sports (makes basketball MUCH easier; also makes it very easy to organize intra-division football like we do right now, hosting one and visiting one of the pair).
But honestly, I don’t care very much, any of the three is fine. Just want it to happen and be done with; I’m tired of worrying that there’s really some evil secret plan going on (like the NW guy is STILL talking about). Can we just fast forward to Tuesday? Please?
Go Utah!
We need somebody to join who will actually appreciate the opportunity.

It’s like A+M have to be dragged into the Pac10. As if the SEC is begging for A+M and they are mulling it over or something. According to this link, sent to us by dimecoverage from Burnt Orange Nation, the SEC never intends to offer A+M:
Our source also spoke to a high-ranking SEC official who reports that no invitation to join the SEC has been extended to Texas A&M and none is expected to be offered.
Our information indicates that any invitation to A&M was contingent upon either Texas or Oklahoma joining the league as well. But the Horns and the Sooners appear to both be onboard to allign with an expanded Pac-10.
So, basically, A+M is worthless to the SEC without Texas or Oklahoma, but A+M, for some delusional reason, continues to act like the SEC wants to grab its nuts!

More on aTm being delusional
There isn`t anywhere for them to go that isn`t with Texas. I think that their idea is to get into the SEC and resume an old rivalry with LSU, one that only ancient LSU fans even recognize as a rivalry. The series is 49 games old, LSU leading 26-20-3, and probably something that will never ever get back to anything noteworthy. That would be the only place that they could get out from under UT`s shadow and try to make something for themselves, and it`s not going to work.
Moving away from the B12, UT, and the other Texas schools to join the SEC will absolutely destroy their recruiting, completely annihilate it. The kids who want to play prominent national games in the south, southwest, and west will be gobbled up by the PAC whatever, and then also, the SEC would have new inroads into Texas with which to poach away all the kids who might have actually gone to aTm.
The Ags are screwed, but being Texans, will remain arrogant to the end.
California Golden Blogs! It`s dat Woo WHOOOOO!
The argument that I have seen is that A+M could say to players “Stay near home and still get to play against the LSUs and Alabamas of the world!” I do not know how successful that would be.
It won’t matter, though. If A+Mers are as delusional as they seem, when all is sad and done I will have an absolute field day with them. It’d be like shooting fish in a barrel. With more fish.

Exactly.
The Aggies are screwed either way they turn, as is the case with unproductive teams within a disentegrating conference.
Really, this whole holdout for the SEC is just empty politics and symbolism, because they know the SEC isn’t that high a possibility.

Don't do this to those little jayhawks
build up there hopes and then crush them. look, all that happened today was texas a&m acting up and saying screw texas, we don’t need you, you ain’t all that. and in about two seconds they realized that the sec ain’t inviting them, so they gotta tag along with daddy. so they can save a little face, at least pretend they made texas say that we really need you brother, you are our equals, and even you know you are snickering. let’s cut the nonsense. and what was missouri thinking they could be so uppity that they were worthy of the big ten. and before you hilljacks do anything really stupid, why don’t you study how 16 team conferences have worked in the past. it ain’t pretty. it no longer felt like a conference. the wac was enjoyable once upon a time. went to 16 for a seat with the big boys. all of a sudden you don’t even know louisiana tech is actually in your conference and your in ruston, louisiana rather than playing your natural enemies. ok, go ahead, let me light up a j and sit back and enjoy watching kansas get a full blown woody again, only to be left at the altar yet again. kansas let me introduce you to laramie, wyoming. make yourself at home. the weed is good out here. i never imagined i’d be on a cal blog one day talking about the alleged great state of kansas and the phelphs family reunion. and i thought deliverance was an sec tradition alone.
p.s. good for you cal bears. you can rightly claim some sort of overlord status. enjoy the view from above. a lot of ants out there. i’m talking to you red raider nation. red raider nation in the pac 10? that, my friends, is against the laws of nature. you guys enjoy all this talk. myself, with my fellow gator overlords, are gonna go out and win some ball games. you want a piece of us? the door is always open.

Seems like a good majority of A&M people want to join the SEC. Culturally, it’s not the right fit for A&M for them to be in an alliance with the pacific coast, but the curiosity might be appealing for TV.
Only trouble is, the SEC would have to take another school to balance out the conference and it’s not clear who else they would take. Oklahoma is going wherever Texas goes, and Texas is not going SEC.
Bottom line, keeping A&M with Texas in the same conference makes sense because their rivalry is a very valuable asset nationally and having 3 Texas teams helps solidify the conference. Utah and Kansas would not add as much value, because their football teams don’t have any tradition with the Pac-10 or Big 12 south teams.

One more thing.
Does anyone else think that the WAC will no longer be a viable football conference? The Pac-something will dominate the west coast, and with the Mountain West adding Boise State and potentially others, the WAC becomes completely irrelevant everywhere in the western US.

the MWC has 2 more to get to 12 …so they’ll offer a Big 12 refugee or even steal Nevada and others……go to 16 and the WAC will be WHACK !!!!
Yeah, I was mainly thinking that the MWC could grab the midwest leftovers like the Kansas schools, Missouri, and Iowa State to form a solid grouping. Nevada and Fresno State wouldn’t be bad additions either.
That would probably cause San Jose State and San Diego State to drop football altogether or join FCS with Davis and whatever other programs are still out there.

Texas A&M!!!
Stop acting like little bit**es. Everyone knows you need big brother Texas. Deep down, YOU know you need big brother Texas. This grandstanding bullsh** is making you look the a** of the Big 12 conference (although you are). Apologize to big brother Texas before they take OU, OkSt, and TTU along for the Pac-10 ride and the Pac-10 accepts KU or Utah. Then reality will kick in and the SEC will close all realignment talks since all it really wanted was OU and/or Texas and you will not receive a SEC offer. Then you will no longer have a Pac-10 offer OR SEC offer. Enjoy life in the MWC or Conference USA: you will have no one to blame but yourselves.
It Ain't Easy, But It's Worth It.
Wow

Kansas or Utah
Utah would be more fun simply to answer the question of: how will a non-bcs team fair in a bcs conference? I think Utah would finish upper half in the division.
Competitively, Utah is the better football team, with the better recruiting territory, and better potential to recruit the west coast. Kansas will continue to recruit Texas, and I can’t imagine them opening a strong California pipeline.
aTm
1. Texas AM would strengthen the Southwest division of the new conference. Maybe not so much in terms of football quality (recently), but in terms of rivalry and cohesion. And traveling to Provo would be a burden for all the SW division teams. Don’t forget AM is a huge university, lots of strong athletic programs, has a strong (manic) following in Texas, and has strong academic departments. The biggest problem is cultural fit, but I think the diversity is actually appealing and don’t forget the Pac 10 has Washington State and Oregon State, so we know a little bit about chewing tobacco and spreading manure. I don’t see Kansas or Utah bringing much in terms of new eyeballs or rivalries. Too bad about the basketball, but maybe all are served by MWC getting better.
2. As I noted in another post, I think Texas has limited options. It doesn’t sound like an offer is coming from the Big 10 or SEC anytime soon, and the Big XII reconstituted would be a big step back. Independent does not seem possible. (A lot of these problems created by Texas needing to maintain links with other Texas schools.) Going with the Pac gives it a chance to get some positive results from a chaotic situation.
So, if I am right now I think it is all about negotiating the terms – where is Texas’ bottom line on having its own TV network, on the TV revenue split, the relationship between the divisions (in particular how integrated they will be), bowl priorities, and how to deal with non-football sports?
Any insights on what is going on with these issues? Is Texas able to compare offers from Pac-10 and other conferences (if other conferences are even able to offer anything?) Or is Texas just inwardly focused on the politics to get out of the Big XII and into a new Conference?
(Here is one idea I had: Pac8 and SWDivision play 7 division games and 2 intra-division games. Winner of the division goes to conf championship game (need to clean all the money off the table), but try to establish bowl tie-ins where Pac8 champ goes to Rose Bowl and SWDivision champ goes to Fiesta or Cotton or JerryJones-Bowl-to-be-in-Dallas. Of course, the winner of the conf championship may well go on to some sort of national championship game, but then maybe second place in division goes to the dedicated bowl. Conf should try to advance these understanding with Texas and Oklahoma while it has leverage. They may like the division focus, allowing them to keep their identity while getting the increased TV money and exposure.)

The University of Utah isn’t in Provo, it’s in Salt Lake City, which is a huge Delta hub. No problem getting there, and plenty of eyeballs.
BYU is in Provo.

Also, you never answered my other post. If Texas decided it didn’t need to take Texas Tech along with it, I think it would join the Big Ten post haste. And the Big Ten would be happy to have Texas. ANY conference would be happy to take Texas.

thanks for the correction on school location.
I agree, Texas is appealing to most any conference. But I think Texas’ problem is that it is linked to Tech, at the least, and maybe OU (and thereby Ok St) and maybe A&M. Consequently, Texas is not going to the Big 10 or the SEC, so if it declines Pac 10 (which can take the other schools) it is rebuilding the BXII with TCU and New Mexico or something.
jh
What you view as Texas’s problem is actually their strength. They have a group of schools dependent on them for revenue, yet Texas has resources to be the dominant program. It’s the perfect setup for them to continue winning.
Texas would still be the strongest team in the Big 10 (at least equal with Ohio State) but would then have the hassle of playing the cold weather schools. In the SEC west, they would have a very tough schedule every year.

Texas’ little brothers are definitely an advantage for scheduling. Between the cream puff out-of-conference schedule (2 of 3 usually don’t require Texas to break a sweat) and the weak members of the conference Texas overmatches a bunch of its opponents.
But I think that restricts its flexibility in conference negotiations – it really wants to keep some form of the Southwest Conference wherever it goes, and that is hard for the Big 10 and the SEC to adapt to. Hats off to Pac10 for finding a way to deal with it.

re: Rose Bowl
part of the appeal of the Big 12 South joining the PAC-10 is the idea of being able to qualify for the Rose Bowl.
Imagine also the idea of Texas and Nebraska playing at the Rose Bowl. That is made for tv grudge match if it happens.
I do not know how they will setup a mechanism of who goes to the Rose Bowl and who goes to the Fiesta Bowl though
by ximiankernel on Jun 12, 2010 2:10 PM PDT up reply actions
It could work similar to how the Cotton Bowl gets first pick of SEC West teams and the Outback Bowl gets the SEC East. The Cotton Bowl can still choose an SEC East team, but only after the Outback Bowl has made its selection. There will almost always be a more qualified SEC West team for the Cotton Bowl to select so it can have the best matchup.

Suck It, Baylor.
ESPN is quoting a Texas paper alleging that the Mountain West is interested in picking up Missouri and Kansas, but have no interest in Baylor.
The Mountain West Conference was a geographical misnomer from the beginning, as it launched with San Diego State among its eight original teams before adding TCU in 2005 and Boise State on Friday.
The conference’s reach doesn’t appear to be stopping there.
According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Kansas, Missouri and Kansas State are on the Mountain West’s radar amid a continuing shakeup of the Big 12.
But Baylor isn’t considered a candidate to join the conference, with TCU standing staunchly in its way, the Fort Worth newspaper reported, citing unnamed sources.
Now are you starting to understand just how irrelevant you are?
Really? TCU standing staunchly in the way? Interesting.

in one of the Texas univ blogs, that TCU might want to be the top school (after the 3 state universities) in Texas. It helps in recruiting, especially in-state.
