Mexico has had a lot of kit sponsors over the last 15 years – I can remember Uhlsport, Nike (2002 World Cup) . .. maybe there’s a Diadora shirt and another 2 or 3 manufacturers in there too.
So you’re saying they get around? Do they have a sister?

No, not at all. They should be on the attack most of this game and they are capable of some gorgeous passing. What they lack are really top level finishers, i.e. they create a ton of goal scoring chances but they don’t score consistently.

That was the correct call on the offsides… there had to be 2 players between the GK and the goal
- To be onside, receiving player must have 2 opposing players between him & goal when ball passed. There was only 1 SA player (not GK). 12 minutes ago via Twitter for iPhone
- HT 0-0. Amazed by how many people don’t know offside rule. Correct call on disallowed MEX goal. Mex player behind GK.

They looked like they were going to cruise in the first 35 minutes – they were dominating the game. Then they had a goal (correctly, apparently) called off and since then they’ve played much worse. Though RSF didn’t have any real chances until they scored very suddenly.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Mexico is pretty good actually but they seemed a little nervous until they scored on that beautiful pass. You cannot underestimate the advantage of the home crowd. Personally I think it’s a moral victory Mexico came away with a tie. If they’d played in any but the first game, Mexico prolly takes it.

But France looked like a team without much of a plan, so hopefully they’ll fall to Mexico and/or RSA and head home a few months later than they should have.

No team looks really impressive.
Uruguay has a pretty strong striker and great defense, so I like their chances of getting out.
France looked plenty talented, but pretty messy. They should be favored in their next two, but I doubt they’ll sweep them.
Mexico…bleh. They needed a pretty big defensive lapse by the hometown boys to even get a point. That Mexico-France game could decide who moves on.
South Africa’s got the home cooking, so their exuberance could carry them into the 2nd round if they garner one upset.

I’m not crying any tears for him. The challenge was late, from behind, and on his ankles. It was unnecessary and dangerous, particularly for a game Australia was clearly on their way to losing. You expect your best player to be smarter.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Having finally caught up on that second half, I think red was an over-reaction. The tackle-from-behind (oo-er missus!) rule was more for studs-up challenges. Cahill’s tackle was stupid and lord knows he has a reputation for that, but it wasn’t a straight red.

I agree. I’m thinking the automatic next game suspension rule should be amended in a tourney with so few games. Maybe the equivalent of 4 yellows = game ban?

Slovakia looks really unorganized. Nice pressure on the goal from New Zealand early. Very English style of play – physical . Oh – nice move from Slovakia’s #7
Slovakia is starting to realize they’re a lot more talented than New Zealand. Looking to move forward with the ball a lot more – even though its a 0-0 half score.
Wow – that was a great build up – Slovakia just passed all the way around the New Zealand defense. Huge difference in talent become apparent.

I really don’t like Drogba as part of Chelsea. He’s a goal scoring machine, but I think he’s selfish and just big fast and strong.
But then I read that article about him in SI a few weeks ago about him basically uniting the country and basically stopping a civil war . . .by himself. and I couldn’t hate him much anymore.
I hope he scores .. . and to score against Ronaldo’s side would be icing on the cake.
Jabulani is FLYING off people’s feet. I’ve seen maybe 1/10th the amount of good crosses that I would’ve for football at this level. And none of the freekicks have dipped – they’ve all flown over the goal.
Speaking of equipment – the super ugly lavender/bright orange Nike Elite boots that all of the players are wearing – super ugly, but VERY noticeable. I can see their players from across the bar. adidas boots tend to blend into the game.
But if you buy a pair of those lavender boots – you’d better be really good – otherwise you’ll get mocked. (I play in adidas copa mundials – very basic black and white boots)
It’s very disappointing when you look forward, for four year, to seeing some of the best soccer on the planet. Every corner kick goes 10 feet further than it should…I’m hoping everybody gets used to it by the knock-out phases but I think it has something to do with scoring being so low.

disagree on Exhibit A
Zakora went in with two feet, studs up. That’s a yellow even if the contact was pretty incidental. The other two instances of Ronaldo being Ronaldo could have been shrugged off but were exaggerated for effect.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
Well, I agree that Zakora’s tackle was reckless and probably deserving of a card. But Ronaldo still went down way too easily with minimal contact.

Finally caught up an hour ago--was actually more impressed by North Korea than the other two teams in their group
Could totally see them pulling an upset in one of those two games and get out of the group.
Portugal seems as usual to be relying too much on Ronaldo’s abilities. I can see the People’s Republic taking pretty boy to the schoolyard next week.
Italy looks like they’re going to win this group by default. Salvaged their toughest game, and New Zealand-Slovakia was the slopfest everyone expected it to be. Slovaks blew a golden opportunity and Italy and Paraguay should make it through unless there’s serious bungling.
Cameroon was disappointing. Dutch looked impressive in group play again, so Japan and Denmark will probably be the matchup to watch to see who gets out.

If Ivory Coast and Portugal both fall to Brazil (likely if they continue to play like they did today) then it’s a fascinating battle to see which team can score the most goals on North Korea (if any goals). I still think if Drogba gets right the Ivory Coast will be OK.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Drogba’s playing with a cast. No way he’s going to get right because of all the falls you make with your arms. He’s always going to have to play off his defender and stay away from contact if he doesn’t want to risk further injury. And even when he had his attempt today it was such a strange look…didn’t really play it typically.
Someone else will have to step up for Cote d’ivoire for them to get that win.

Can someone provide some colour on this game?
Cell phone service is a little spotty, so now I’m just reading play-by-play; but I’m wondering how the situation on the ground looks. Thanks!
7
The Spanish are just blitzing the Swiss defense. They’re going to make a break-through in the 2nd half. Too much talent, too many players who can put the ball in the net.
Thanks! Can you give me one or two quick talking points just in case I need to mention something about it?
7
Well, the Swiss just scored on a completely broken play.
Upset in the making? The Swiss are going to put 9 men behind the ball now.
The Spanish midfield HAD been just totally blitzing the Swiss defense – but the Swiss just countered, and the Spanish didn’t get men back and just in one instant, your luck can change that quick.
Awesome. Thanks.
All I know is that Fernandes shot it right-footed. I have no idea why this is relevant.
7
Inesita, Ramos, David Villa, are moving the ball at will against the Swiss, but they’re down 1-0. The Swiss are very plucky – tackling hard and looking for the counter.
The Swiss keeper + defense reminds me a lot of how the US was playing during last year’s Confed Cup. Just keep clearing stuff out. Stay organized. Don’t worry about all the fancy passing, just clear and reset and counter when available.
I was listening on the radio and they said that even if Switzerland hadn’t scored, it would have been a penalty for handball from Pique. Was that how it looked on tv?

South African goalkeeper sent off! Uruguay penalty! 2 - 0!
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
BOOOOOOOOO
I disagree with the call. Suarez flopped. He probably could have had the goal anyway if he hadn’t exaggerated the minimal contact.
"Some people watch adult videos on their computer - I go to YouTube and watch Jahvid Best highlight clips. That’s what gets me going."- Jim Schwartz, Detroit Lions head coach
Yikes, this does not look good for RSA. Now they have to hope for as many draws as possible and pull out a result against France, not to mention goal differential on top of that, with their first string keeper watching from the sidelines.
Eh
Even if that hadn’t been called, I really doubt they’d have equalized. The talent gap is really wide between these guys and everyone else. Only the home crowd gave them any chance to get goals.

Today's observations
Forlan’s a beast. I think he has a solid shot at making a name for himself if they get to the Round of 16—their side is pretty strong defensively, and all they need is for him to make a goal or two every round.
Spain’s loss was tough, but it was more luck than any execution issues. They were very aggressive, ran pretty well and got plenty of opportunities to get their goal. Still think they can win the last two games if they play as well as they did.
Swiss play great D, but they have to play Greece ball—get that lead and hold on, and I don’t know how many more leads they can get; that was a real trash goal they ended up with. Two draws would be the best outcome for them.
Chile and Honduras was a secretly feisty matchup. Chile’s offense was fun, Honduras’s defense was real good. Nice clash of styles. I had Chile winning this group, so I’m pleased with today’s results.

It may have been a trash goal, but the Swiss were unlucky to not get one more – so it evens out (and as they say, that’s football – you can be the superior team, and lose one based on not stopping a counter)
Interestingly, they replicated what we did last time
Hitzfeld broke down Bradley’s blueprint step by step, noting how his team specifically focused on a few key areas of the field to overcome a drastic difference in technical ability.
"We saw how the Americans played against Spain with a lot of interest," Hitzfeld said. "You know that if you are going to have a chance against [the Spanish] you need to do certain things very well.
"The USA did not try to do everything. They accepted the fact that Spain has pace and width and simply made sure they kept the center of defense as tight as they could. It is not a perfect system, but it was a very interesting tactic and it worked."

The Swiss did a really good job of keeping a tight back four. I’m also impressed that they didn’t retreat automatically into a 4 – 5 – 1 formation, because they probably wouldn’t have scored otherwise.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
They were unlucky not to get one more… and having watched the second half, I was struck that the Spanish were getting to target but no luck in actual scoring. The rest of the game was a bit like watching Arsenal the season after they went undefeated: they’d pass the ball around into the box and then look around, baffled, about who was actually going to score.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
So the question is – has a fatal flaw been revealed, or (more likely) will Spain take out their frustration with a ruthless destruction of Chile and Honduras?
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
I vote for the second. The US/Swiss defense requires a lot of fitness, a great goalkeeper and discipline. Chile is full of attacking football. And Honduras just isn’t as good.
GO USA! GO SWITZERLAND!

Forlan’s already given himself an image makeover of significant scope between the Diego “Forlorn” days at Manchester United and the amount of goals he’s scored in La Liga, holding up what can be an indifferent Atletico Madrid team. If he runs amok at this World Cup, it will be the final stage of the image rehab I would imagine.

That Argentina/South Korea game was ridiculously good. I know everyone will concentrate on Messi’s masterful control of the midfield (I think he’s a lot more like an even better Chris Paul than a Lebron – small, pacey, ridiculously good ball handler who can either distribute or score himself) or Higuan’s hat trick, but Korean’s midfield defense was really sharp – Argentina was just better – and the Korean counter attack was a thing of beauty – they turn and run so fast. Too bad they ran into what looks like the best team in the Cup – at least for one day.
Way to beat Argentina: Score first goal, defend like hell, score another goal on counterattack?

I think you need to bring more people back than ROK did – I think DPRK’s strategy of not allowing ANY space might have done the trick. You have to commit to defend for 90 minutes – and then hope you can get a goal off 5 or 6 counter attacks. ROK’s players are better than DPRKs – I think the 02 Korea team won by pressing the entire game and out running their opponents- but South Africa isn’t hot and humid like Korea/Japan were in 02, so the fitness edge is lessened.
Well that and that amazing home crowd advantage must’ve made them feel like they were playing in a Vegas casino. And all the horrid officiating as a result of that home field advantage too.
I really don’t think fitness was the issue today. Argentina’s the best team in the tournament. I’d have been pleasantly surprised with a two goal loss. South Korea isn’t really a defensive-minded team—their flair comes from their offense, and Argentina’s just better at the things they do well.

So now, Nigeria is up on Greece, and If they hold on for the win I’ll they’ll need is a tie on South Korea to advance. I haven’t actually seen S. Korea play, but if their quality is as high as everybody says, it might be a shame to potentially lose them in the 2nd round.
Lots of time left for the Greeks, I guess, but they haven’t shown any signs that they’ll make a run.

Stars and Gripes (the best futbol blog I’ve found) has their Slovenia previews up:
A look at Slovenia
US – Slovenia Keys
So, who will line up for the United States? The arguments for Buddle and Torres are detailed above. I would say Torres is the more likely of the two to start, and a 65-70 minute run-out may be in order. Slovenia’s rather methodical nature tends to mean they score late in games (both goals in the playoff with Russia were in the final frames, as was Robert Koren’s strike against Algeria). The US will need fresh legs in the middle of the pitch as they move towards the final whistle, and a late cameo from Clark may make more sense than 90 minutes.
