Golden Recruiting Board: May 2010

Quick hits

  • We are in the Spring evaluation period (April 15 - May 31) after Spring Practice. More offers will be going out to recruits.
  • I tried to track down as many highlight reels as I could. If you want to see some nasty stuff, Andre Yruretagoyena is your man. I LQTM'ed.
  • I track recruits with Cal scholarship offers. To compile the scholarship offer list, I cross-referenced Rivals, BI, and Scout.com. Scout.com's scholarship offer list is lacking compared to BI and Rivals. Its news cycle though is update-to-date. ESPN/Scouts Inc's "considering" list does not differentiate recruits with respect to their scholarship offer status. Therefore, it is not useful for the purpose of the Golden Recruiting Board.
  • Todd Barr, Christian Heyward, DeAnthony Thomas, Greg Townsend Jr., Jason Gibson, Victor Blackwell, and Antoine Arnold attended the USC NIKE camp recently. Marqise Lee was MIA. Both Gibson and Blackwell have been waiting for their USC offers.

Star-divide

Quarterbacks

  • There are questions regarding Boehm's mechanics [1].
  • A list of QB recruits have expressed their interest in a Cal scholarship offer from Tedford and Co. They are: Cody Kessler, Centennial HS (Bakersfield, CA), Derrick Brown, Vista Murrieta (Murrieta, CA), Chad Jeffries, Glendora HS (Glendora, CA), Nick Sherry Casa Grande HS (Petaluma, CA).

Running Backs

  • Without seeing highlights from Darren Ervin, I'd have to say the strongest back of the group looks to be Savon Huggins. RB highlights are always entertaining to watch, and it's easy to see why many coaches covet these recruits.
  • I'm sad to read about DeAnthony Thomas favoring USC early. Hopefully Tedford & Co can sway him for an offical visit to Berkeley.

  • MinerNiner is high on Antoine Arnold. There seems to be some academic concerns and he might go the JC route [13].

BTW, not sure if we can quite say we're parting ways with Seferain-Jenkins?

This link (Greg Biggins, ESPN Insider required) seems to imply that 3 schools are the ones to beat and Cal is one of them. Plus, he’s camping with us on June 6th, so things may have changed since his plan to announce on June 1st.

This article about Rodgers (also linked above by solarise) says he has offers from ND and Oregon. It also has this interesting tidbit:

Maryland, Boston College and California also made previous offers. The Cal offer is intriguing because not only is that where his father, Richard, went, but the school is open to the idea of Rodgers trying to walk on to the basketball team as well.

Rockin’ info. Rec’d.

Wikipedia’s notes -

Harmon squibbed the kick and Cal’s Kevin Moen received the ball inside the Cal 45 near the left hash mark. After some ineffective scrambling, Moen lateraled the ball leftward to Richard Rodgers.

Rodgers was very quickly surrounded, gaining only one yard before looking behind him for Dwight Garner, who caught the ball around the Cal 45.

Garner ran straight ahead for five yards, but was swallowed up by five Stanford players. While Garner was being tackled, however, he managed to pitch the ball back to Rodgers. It was at this moment, believing that Garner had been tackled and the game was over, that several Stanford players on the sideline and the entire Stanford band (which had been waiting behind the south end zone) ran onto the field in celebration.

Rodgers dodged another Stanford player and took the ball to his right, toward the middle of the field, where at least four other Cal players were ready for the next pitch. Around the Stanford 45, Rodgers pitched the ball to Mariet Ford, who caught it in stride. Meanwhile, the Stanford band, all 144 members, had run out past the south end zone—the one the Cal players were trying to get to—and had advanced as far as twenty yards downfield. The scrum of players was moving towards them.

Ford avoided a Stanford player and sprinted upfield while moving to the right of the right hash mark, and into the band, which was scattered all over the south end of the field. Around the Stanford 27, three Stanford players smothered Ford, but while falling forward he threw a blind lateral over his right shoulder.

Moen caught it at about the 25 and charged toward the end zone. One Stanford player missed him, and another could not catch him from behind. Moen ran through the scattering Stanford Band members for the touchdown, which he famously completed by running into unaware trombone player Gary Tyrrell. – The Play

If you’re referring to Gary Plummer, he was the nose tackle for Cal. He went on to a very solid career as a linebacker for the Chargers and Niners. I mentioned him because he probably had the longest professional career of anyone on that team. I’m pretty sure that Ron Rivera doesn’t have kids in high school. I could have also mentioned the other players involved in The Play, but it still saddens me to think about Marriet Ford because I lived in the same dorm as he did.

New England prospect Richard Rodgers holding five offers
Tight end / wide receiver Richard Rodgers (Shewsbury, Mass./St. John’s) is currently holding scholarship offers from Boston College, Notre Dame, California, Maryland and Oregon, ESPN affiliate Web site IrishSportsDaily.com reports.

The 6-foot-4, 225-pound prospect is also receiving interest from programs such as Clemson, Iowa, Michigan State, Nebraska, Stanford and Tennessee.

“Everything is wide open,” Rodgers stated, adding that he’s targeting a fall decision. “I’m versatile with location because I have family everywhere. I think the education is the big part. Wherever I go, I want to set myself up for the future, that’s basically the main thing. My father says I should go to the school that has the best education for me, because I’m going to need it in the future.”

Rodgers’ father played at California and then in the Canadian and Arena Football Leagues. He’s served as a college football coach for more than a decade.

Richard caught 49 passes for 722 yards (14.7 average) and 17 touchdowns last season. He also made 27 tackles and intercepted four passes. – ESPN On the trail

On Josh Atkinson –

I’m not impressed. 4.47 for a corner is average at best. Wait for a better candidate; it’s still early to lock in an average player. – IrishEnvy

Wrong. 4.47 is great speed for any kid running the 40 dash. Josh Atkinson also ran his personal best 10.61s 100m this year. If a wind indicator was used Josh’s time would’ve been 4th best in the state of CA and 17th in the nation, sharing the honor w/ his brother George.

The Irish will indeed have envy (who the hell names their website IrishEnvy….are they envious of….themselves?)….when Atkinson comes to Cal, where we welcome him and his brother. They’re super fast, and even more importantly are good football players. 40 times are overrated as a measurement for talent. Look at Syd, one of the best Cal corners in the last 10 years, and people say his 40 is slow. But 40 times don’t reflect the ability to play the ball and attack.

Andre Yruretagoyena

Though I can’t pronounce his name, he’s one mean offensive lineman….he puts the offensive in OL….he’s like 20 yards downfield, having pancaked his man, looking to pancake a LB or safety…while his RB is still 10 yards behind him.

Granted, it seems like he’s playing against kids half his size, but he just has a mean streak when he’s looking for guys to humiliate downfield…for example the long TD run by his RB, when he blindsides not one but two guys downfield. Freak. Freaking awesome!

I would like for this guy to come to Cal but I have a question. Why is he playing RT instead of LT? With a right handed QB I want my best pass blocker to protect my QB’s back.

by calas on May 6, 2010 1:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Most of the plays in the highlight reel were running plays, maybe they go to the running game much more often, and perfer the right side? It also seems to cater to doing a counter play where they run left and counter right, he can block the right and middle linebackers….though I suppose they could do all of this to the left side AND have the advantage of protecting the QB’s blind side, so I have no idea what I’m talking about.

Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE Gig Harbor (Gig Harbor, WA) has already been selected early January this year.

Walls, who has more than 20 scholarship offers, is generally considered a safety, even though, at 5-10, 185, he doesn’t have the traditional body type for the position. He was asked which secondary position is prefers. "I prefer safety," Walls said. "I like kind of being the quarterback of the defense and seeing the whole field." Walls’ has many offers faraway offers, including California, UCLA, Stanford and Michigan. "Distance is no factor for me," said Walls, who plans to be an early enrollee.

Maurice Harris

Does anybody have any more information on this guy? I don’t get it. Yeah, he’s part of that North Guilford connection with those incoming NC recruits, and has been offered by some quality schools. Someone had mentioned that they were wow’d by his highlight reel, and that he was destined to become a five-star prospect this recruiting season.

But then something’s not computing for me. Granted, my only point of reference is a 3 minute video on athlete vault here: http://www.athletevault.com/index.php?id=924. On Scout, he has a Scout combine listed 40 time of 4.97 for a WR. I take any listed time with a huge grain of salt for any player on any recruiting website, but it looks like he PLAYS a 4.97 in that tape. The length of the video doesn’t meet my standard for evaluation (at least five minutes long), but just judging from the above, he is no better than a low three-star, high two-star—think LaReyelle Cunningham. All of his offers come from the SAME SCHOOLS that recruited the NC trio. Has he added any offers since this past national signing day? A prediction, but I don’t expect him to make it onto any of the major sites’ lists (Scout 300, ESPN 150, Rivals 150) and for Harris to slip in receiver rankings as better undiscovered talent is graded—Harris is currently #53 receiver nationally on Scout. Hope I’m wrong, though.

Is Cal still actively recruiting Harris, or have we cooled on him? There are plenty better receiver prospects out there, and Cal is in the running for some potentially special ones. In commenting on the Keenan Allen package, I have previously argued that Zach Maynard would be a welcome addition for class balance and depth at the quarterback position (primarily due to his D-1 playing experience, as I believe him to be a low-upside, marginal talent with no pro prospect), but bringing in Harris would be a mistake and no player—not even a Keenan Allen talent—should warrant use of three scholarships. (Hell, even DeSean Jackson only cost us two.)

What WRs are you talking about? I know we have a shot for Williams, maybe Blackmon, maybe Blackwell, but if the staff likes him, he probably has talent. Also a 40 time is NEVER something to trust completely…

by drub12 on May 9, 2010 12:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Rivals has a similar clip . Based on the date posted I assume the reel must’ve been from Maurice Harris’ Fr/So year in HS. Recruitniks started raving about Harris after his Jr year performance. Therefore, it’s completely plausible imo that Harris made a huge jump in 2009 to earn his recruiting honors/nominations.

RE the 40 time, I may be wrong but there hasn’t been any evidence of Harris attending combine/camps this Spring. All the publicly available data could be old since Scout.com has 4.97, ESPN/Scouts Inc. 5.12, and Rivals 4.50. Hopefully Harris will come camp at Cal this summer and the coaches can get a good look at him.

All I know is that I think he’s Allen’s cousin, giving him a personal connection to Cal and that he’s on a lot of the pre-season ‘watchlists’. So, based of that he doesn’t seem to be lacking in potential, but that’s all I can say about him.

I’ve watched Maurice Harris’ junior highlights and the 40 yard dash times that you have listed are not indicative of his functional speed. He is a legit 5.8 on Rivals; if not now, than by the end of the season.

Three stand out for offensive lineman Jordan Rigsbee

Tackle / guard Jordan Rigsbee (Chico, Calif./Pleasant Valley) spoke with ESPN affiliate Web site BearInsider.com about the current status of his recruitment.

He has California, where his holder brother Tyler plays, Oregon and Boise State on top. Rigsbee recently visited the Ducks and the Broncos.

“The things I look for in choosing a program are your position coach,” said Rigsbee, “because that’s who you’re going to spend a lot of time with- along with the rest of the coaching staff. Also, the guys on the team and the talent they have, a comfortable feeling with the program and the school itself are important, because you can’t play football forever so you want to consider the value of your education.”

“I’m not going to rush into my decision but I do think I’d like to make my decision before my senior season for a couple of reasons,” added Rigsbee. “First of all, I’d like to be playing football my senior year not worrying about other things. I also know that coaches need to make their own plans, too.”

Arizona, Oregon State, Washington and Washington State are among Rigsbee’s other offers. – ESPN On the trail

"Texas would be at the top even though they haven’t offered," Seferian-Jenkins said. "They’re pretty far up there and they have a really good program. I’m talking to coach (Bruce) Chambers a lot now. It’s really exciting for them to recruit me and they have a really good school and they run a similar offense to my high school that I run right now so it would be an easy transition for me."

In part because of tight ends coach Brian White, Florida was presumed to be the frontrunner for Seferian-Jenkins, who also had UCLA and Cal high on his list, but now Texas has leapfrogged all those schools and has claimed the top spot.

Seferian-Jenkins’ complete top eight is Texas, Washington, UCLA, Cal, USC, Alabama, Florida and LSU. Those are the only programs he will consider from here until he makes his commitment.

"I narrowed it down because those are the best schools for me," Seferian-Jenkins said. "I chose the top eight schools that would benefit me in the long run and help me become a better football player and give me a good academic chance." – Adam Gorney, Rivals / Yahoo! Sports

These highly rated players go there thinking that they are so good in HS that they are just going to step on to the field at $c and play. Only to find out that they already have a 5* kid there. They might think that when that kids leaves he will take his place. Wrong!!! $c will only find another 5* guy and passes him up and the kid never sees the field.

Michigan may be the team to beat for Kris Frost
“I think Michigan is the team to beat because he’s liked Michigan his whole life,” added Newsome [Mike, Head Coach of Butler HS (Matthews, NC)]. "When I told him that they had offered him he almost jumped up and hit his head on the ceiling. He is really excited about Michigan. Unfortunately for them, there’s the problem that they are going through with their program right now. I think it is something that Kris is looking at right now and is using that to look at some other schools. "

Visits have played a significant role in moving Auburn and North Carolina up Frost’s list. They join Michigan, LSU, and California in comprising his top five. Now the jockeying for summer and official visits is under way.

“I do plan on visiting Georgia Tech and LSU, and possibly going back up to Auburn sometime real soon,” Frost reported. “Also, I’ve been trying to get to Michigan. This month I’ve been trying to get to (Ann Arbor for the Barbecue at the Big House on May 22), but with the plane tickets and all that it is kind of hard to get up there. My family is really talking long and hard about it, and by next week I should definitely know if we’ll be going. We should definitely know by next week all the places we’re going to visit and when we’re going to visit them.”

“My mom and dad will be with me every step of the way and my brother also,” he said. “Of course, the parents are always going to be there and you’re always going to listen to what they say. My brother is also a big contributor in where I go. We’re going to have a great time going around and seeing these colleges, the four of us. We’re going to enjoy every minute of it.”

On each trip the Frosts will also be evaluating a very distinct list of criteria.

“Of course, playing time,” said Frost. “How much playing time I can get going into the school and how open are they. I’m always welcome to working as hard as I can to get to that starting spot, but seeing how much time it will take and how many seniors are on the team — that’s real important. Also this next year, seeing how well I do as a receiver maybe I’ll have the chance that to see which school will give me a chance to play receiver there, also.” – Sam Webb, Detroit News

My theory on why we haven’t offered is because he’s a little shorter than Boehm.

But that’s all I can really think of. From all accounts, Kessler’s the better QB?

by Shadwhand on May 17, 2010 9:55 AM PDT up reply actions

From MoragaBear of BI after Berkeley Elite 11 camp (HT OskiMonsta for the thread) -

I was a little confused about Kessler not getting an offer, but seeing both in person, Boehm looks the part more. He’s big, strong, athletic, accurate and he’s run three different kinds of offense so Ludwig feels he’s a great fit for their offense -another sign that he plans to stick around.

Kessler’s got a strong arm, he’s confident and he’s a fiery leader -all great characteristics for a quarterback. On the down side, he was a little inconsistent on his throws, he’s a little on the shorter side (between 6-0 and 6-1) and he’s got a strong, stocky build like a safety. Regardless, I think he’ll be a good qb at the next level.

I think Boehm’s given indications that he’s likely to commit soon so if you favor him and don’t consider the two a tossup, you play it the way they played it.

Some assume Cal didn’t have a chance with Wittek but they definitely did. I think if SC didn’t offer, he would’ve gone to Cal. His dad lives in San Ramon and he liked the program a lot.

It will be interesting if Kessler commits to SC. Will Wittek stay then? Kessler’s an early entry so he could play first year and redshirt Wittek -essentially bringing them in in separate classes. It’s no given that Scroggins will qualify either, so that could factor in.

What I’d like to see a little more of in Boehm is fire on the field. The Joe Cool persona worked well for Montana, but he had a burning passion to win. Hopefully for Cal, if he commits to the Bears, he does, too.

Jimmy LoughreyLaughrea out of Rocklin has been a guy that’s been considered, like Kessler, but I don’t expect an offer to be extended unless Boehm indicates he’s going elsewhere. They’ve got a couple national guys in line, too, but I’d be surprised if Boehm didn’t commit to Cal by June.

GunnerMate’s comment -

Boehm’s release is much more like Aaron Rodgers. Kessler’s is more like Tebows. That and the height difference are what I believe are the reasons for Tedford liking Boehm better.

MoragaBear’s response –

I agree with that assessment and that’s coming from someone who thought Kessler was the better option for Cal till I saw them throw together Friday.

For some reason, Kessler didn’t compete at the Elite 11 today, but Boehm was there along with Jimmy Laughrey Laughrea, who was referenced earlier.

Surprisingly, LaughreyLaughrea won qb mvp today, though I would’ve thought Boehm or maybe Casa Grande’s Nick Sherry or SRV’s Zach Kline might’ve won it based on today’s performances.

Laughrea looks like a fairly decent dual-threat pick

But I think that if Cal were to pick him up, work would have to begin immediately on his throwing motion. He seems to have nice accuracy and a quick release, which I enjoyed immensely, but he has a tendency to throw off of his back foot ala Favre, and throw without having squared himself away. I like that he keeps the ball around his shoulder plane and off of his waist, but all in all I think he`s a good project for anyone to pick up.

Berkeley Elite 11 Camp Update
Bakersfield (Calif.) Centennial QB Cody Kessler was the best overall prospect there.

Kessler told us right before the camp started his head was rattling with the two offers he picked up from USC and UCLA earlier Friday.

But he settled down and showed off his arm and why he’s so highly thought of. He capped the day with an invite to the US Army Game.

San Jose (Calif.) Archbishop Mitty’s Kyle Boehm was solid throughout the day, getting better as the camp went on… Glendora (Calif.)‘s Chad Jeffries also was good … as well as … Petaluma (Calif.) Casa Grande’s Nick Sherry.

Concord (Calif.) De La Salle’s Bart Houston was another stellar 2012 performer- kid knows the big stage, winning the state title as a soph.

He’s got really good size and a very good arm, and in the footwork drills, was great. Good zip on his throws.

In the meantime, aside from QB’s, Todd Barr from Lakewood just told me he was offered by Boise State. He’s one of the elite DT’s nationally – Brandon Huffman via Twitter
Cody Kessler (Bakersfield, Calif./Centennial) continues to rise in the eyes of college recruiters throughout the spring and is receiving attention from programs across the country, not just on the West Coast. This is the second time we’ve seen Kessler in person, and the more we watch him, the more he reminds us of a less polished Jake Heaps from the 2010 class. Kessler isn’t quite as far along as Heaps was at this point and isn’t as consistent from rep to rep, but Kessler shows real flashes, and his best football is ahead of him.

Kyle Boehm (Cupertino, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) has a real nice arm, something we saw back in March. The ball didn’t quite jump off his hand the way it did when we last saw him, but he has great size, is well built and has taken most of his snaps from under center, which makes him attractive from a footwork and ball handling standpoint.

Chad Jeffries (Glendora, Calif.) is a good athlete with great feet and a late bloomer’s body who really hums the ball. He consistently displayed good drop speed, a balanced setup and the ability to get rid of the ball in a hurry with velocity and power. Has a live arm and a lot of frame development upside.

Bart Houston (Concord, Calif./De La Salle) may play at a school that prides itself on the veer option, but he is a tall, good-looking pocket passer who could garner some interest if he is able to showcase his skills as a passer some this season. He showed good arm strength and a smooth delivery. – Tom Luginbill, ESPN / Scouts, Inc.

QB pipeline seems quite strong for 2011. Bart Houston {2012} attended Cal’s Junior Day.

Looks like a top-tier blind side guard/tackle to me. For fitting into Cal`s schemes, I think he would do well as a LT for our future with Sweeney/Mansion/Hinder/2011 recruit… As far as pigeonholing him as either a guard or tackle, I think it really depends on what percentage Ludwig wants the passing game to run. I can see him as a solid blindside anchor if our offense runs 60%+ passing, but also as a beautiful hole maker blowing up defensive tackles and second tier WILLs for punishing RBs like Briggs who will primarily be 2nd and 7 / 3rd and 4 guys running between the tackles.

Mansion played in the TAPPS division which is made up of small private and Christian schools (Same as Forsett and Adcock BTW). The 5-foot-9, 160-pound standout was also offered by UCLA, California, Arizona, Arizona State, Washington, Florida, Colorado, Georgia, Oklahoma, Texas, Oregon, Oregon State and San Diego State.

His God-brother, Victor Blackwell, a receiver from Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.), recently pledged to USC.

Andre Yruretagoyena Interview
In college, I plan to major in: Something with computers, I love technology… I consider myself a bit of a computer nerd.

I like playing on the offensive line because: putting d-lineman who run their mouths on their back is the best feeling ever. Scoring TD’s is fun, paving the way for a running back, and keeping my bestfriend(QB) safe at all times. I haven’t let up a sack, knock on wood.

My favorite play: Anything with a downblock. Counter, power, sweep, are all fun plays to run too :D

People would be surprised that I: have played 1 year of varsity football.

Ten years from now I’ll be: either a computer wizz, or the NFL. But I gotta make it past my senior season first! – ArkansasOnline

RT as opposed to LT

Left tackles usually play more pass defense, so you want one that has nimble feet and wont get beat as much (protecting the QB’s backside). Right tackles are more for running. They are usually the lead blockers and the blockers that are getting downfield. He plays on the right side because hes more of a road paver instead of a pass protector, not because he hasn’t played enough or isnt good enough.

Cyrus Hobbi keeping an open mind on recruiting
"I am hearing all kinds of things that coaches are saying to me," said Hobbi. "I think mostly I am being recruited at guard and center. I think I am a pretty athletic O-lineman and that is why I play tackle, but most college coaches have me at guard for the next level and some even have me at center. I will play wherever coach puts me, because man they can just line me up and tell me to go. I just want to go up against some one. Some coaches are even telling me they are going to put me on defense and play me both ways, which I would love that too. I really don’t care where I play but I think most colleges want to play me at guard."
Hobbi has been offered by over 20-schools and that list continues to grow despite the fact he really hasn’t been that active in the recruiting process. He went to that O-linemen camp in New Jersey and this summer he hopes to go to California Memorial Day weekend and visit UCLA, Cal and USC. He is also going on a family vacation to New York at the end of June and he hopes to stop by Michigan and Notre Dame.
"I play nasty," said Hobbi. "If you are lining up across me you are not going to have a fun time. From what coaches have told me they have told me that I am very physical and I am a very versatile player, because this past year I played left tackle, right tackle, left guard and right guard and I just about played every spot on the line. I would say the main thing is that I am just mean and nasty. I like run blocking more and I like driving a guy into the ground. I would say though that I am petty even and maybe I am not that much better at one over the other."
"As far as the school itself I want to see what kind of academic program that it has," said Hobbi. "I want to have something to do after football is over, especially if I don’t make it to the draft. I want to go to a school that will help me get a plan for after football. I just want to be able to go to a school where I am set after life. I want to major in theater or drama and I would like to be in the acting end of it, or I want to get into broadcasting. I don’t care about the style of offense and I am always looking to learn new things. I would like to play early or somewhat early. I realize I may not start at a freshman, but I certainly would like to get some playing time. If I need to redshirt then I will redshirt, but I want to go into a program with an opportunity to play and if they decide to redshirt me then that is what I will do. One of the big keys is going to be the relationship with the coaches. I want to have a great relationship with the Head Coach, Offensive Coordinator and especially the O-line coach. It will be whoever puts a big impression on me will play a big part in my decision." – James Hale, OUInsider / ESPN

$C targeting Vei Moala
Defensive tackle isn’t usually a position of strength on the west coast, so when there are two players as talented as Antwaun Woods and Viliami Moala, the Trojans would be wise to do everything in their power to grab both of them. Moala is a space eater in the middle of the line who looks physically ready to play college ball right now. Throw in the fact that USC grabbing Moala would deal a serious blow to Cal and it only makes his recruitment that much more important. – WeAreSC

Austin Seferian-Jenkins sets announcement date
“I’m still hoping for Texas to offer,” Seferian-Jenkins said. "They were just at my school yesterday and I ran a 4.65 40 in the rain. I’ve been talking to them a lot lately and it sounds like they’re really interested but honestly, I have no idea if they plan to offer or not.

“I hope they do, I like Texas a lot but if not, I’m going to make my decision on September 29. That’s my birthday and I figure that would be a good day to decide on my college, begin my manhood that day so it seems like it would appropriate. If Texas does offer, I’ll hold off and take my visits but if they don’t, that will be my decision day.” – Burnt Orange Nation
