via grfx.cstv.com (Buy your shirt at CalBears.com!)
The Bears wrested the national championship back from the BYU Cougars in a hard-fought 19-7 ruckfest at Stanford's Steuber Rugby Stadium this evening.
Cal held BYU scoreless until the 73rd minute.
Captain Eric Fry crossed the tryline first for the Bears, scoring wide to the right in the fourth minute. Hooker Neil Barrett then touched down Cal's second try in the 38th minute.
Flyhalf Keegan Englebrecht was the match's high scorer, booting two penalty kicks and a drop goal for nine points.
The Bears finish the 2010 season undefeated in 26 matches, racking up 1,626 points and giving away 185.

I was looking at the roster
and it seems all of the ‘name’ players are graduating. Concerning?

A constant problem in college sport ...
They were other “names” last year, remember.
Losses to graduation are a problem to any varsity team. That’s why player development is such a critical element in the Cal rugby program. Last year, the Bears lost a lot of talent, yet there was enough depth to overcome the deficit and produce an undefeated season.
There’s some talent — well-demonstrated talent — among the continuing underclassmen.
Eightman Danny Barrett will be a junior next year; Brendon Daly, at lock, will move up to sophomore status; prop Jeremy Deterding becomes a senior; Todd Grant will be senior flyhalf prospect; center Seamus Kelly, playing far above his class standing, will only be a sophomore; Anthony Lombardo, as junior next year, has a couple of years left in him; and Connor Ring, at scrumhalf, moves up to the senior class in 2011.
There is one other thing in rugby’s favor that can whittle graduation losses, though it conflicts with the academic goals of Clark & Co.: USA Rugby grants five years of eligibility to college players. It’s possible for players to hang back a year — to become “super seniors.”
That’s rarity in the Cal program, though. In fact, I can’t remember the side’s last “super senior.”

You're right ...
Where DOES the time go? Getting too old for this.
Keegan was recruited out of Texas as freshman in Fall ‘05. He’s the son of Rugby Super League founder Keith Englebrecht.
Still, with a roster topping 60, a single super senior’s a rare bird.

Some commenters were saying Fry had been there forever
but because he redshirted after hospitalization for a collapsed lung

Cole, at 263 lbs., is the weightiest rugger on the side.
A prop out of Lamorinda, Huntley will have to bid for the job of graduating senior James Besser.
As a freshman, he’s had a chance to demonstrate his skill in nine matches, including Cal’s quarterfinal victory over UCLA. Clark apparently is pleased with what he’s seen so far.

Nothing new
It shouldn’t be any more concerning than it’s been in any of the last 25 years.
I am a Vereenian.
Okay, so I played football in high school, much to my Mom’s dismay. I had to persuade her to let me play such a dangerous sport. Then I went to UC Davis where I didn’t make the football team (they were pretty darn good for Div. 2 at the time). So I went looking for another full contact sport and found lacrosse. One time we went to "Furd for a game and my parents, who lived in Berkeley, came along. We walked past a field where two rugby teams were warming up and my mom said…. “Hey, that looks like a great sport; why didn’t you ever play that in high school????” WTF??
I don’t really understand the inticacies of the sport, but I am SO proud of Cal’s team and their enormous sucess. GREAT job, Bears. You earned it !!!!!

Learning rugby basics isn't all that hard ...
… especially when compared to American football’s rules. Still, the Law has intricacies that challenge the most experienced players, coaches and, sad to say, officials.
The best way to learn rugby (besides actually PLAYING rugby) is attend matches with a rugby veteran who can offer a running commentary, Watching games like the national championships with play-by-play offered by the likes of Brian Lowe and Alex Goff can be very educational.
You’ll get a chance to see some seven-aside action on TV in June when the national college invitational tournament is broadcast on NBC. So, far, the announcers haven’t been named publicly.
Cal’s match against Dartmouth will be broadcast at 2 pm (Pacific) on Saturday, June 5. Seminfinal and final matches follow on Sunday, June 6.

BYU really took the game to Cal
This was a game for the ages and really demonstrates the skills and grit of top-flight collegiate players.
It’s this level of intensity that the nascent College Premier League hopes to distill when it kicks off next spring.
BYU threw a lot of weight at Cal in the title match. Literally. The average BYU player weight is 212 ibs. It’s only 203 for Cal. But that really understates the differential on the field. The Cougar’s starting prop, Mikey Su’a, is a hefty 297-pounder. His Cal counterpart, James Besser, tips the scales at only 240.
Speaks well of the Bears’ fitness. And for that you can thank Cal coach Tom Billups.

Well, when you consider the tenure of the rugby championship is now 30 years and Cal has held the title for 25 of them, I can honestly say I don’t know of another team that’s dominated a sport.
Heck, the Yankee’s are the winningest baseball team in the nation — at least when you count World Series appearances. The pinstriperc took the title 27 time in 40 appearances, but it took ’em 87 years to amass that record.

Looking through the NCAA official site:
-Oklahoma St. wrestling won 34 national championships (and 16 of the first 19) in the ~80 year history of the sport
-UCLA men’s volleyball has won 19 championships in the 39 years the title has been awarded.
-Track and Field: The USC men won 16 national titles in 21 years in the 30s, 40s and 50s and the LSU women won 11 in a row in the late 80s and early 90s.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Trinity College men's squash
Trinity College men’s squash team has 214 consecutive wins – the longest active winning streak in any intercollegiate varsity sport, and the longest winning streak ever. Their most recent loss occurred more than a decade ago, during the 1999 season.
In answer to Rishi’s question though, Cal Rugby definitely belongs among the elite college programs ever, considering its level of dominance surpasses virtually any collegiate team that has ever existed in any sport – including Wooden’s pay-for-play basketball teams.

Rugby Players Get 5 Years
Because the ruling body is USA Rugby and not the NCAA, a player can play for 5 seasons. So when it says senior on the roster, that does not necessarily mean they are “gone.” For example, both Neill Barrett and Tom Rooke (amongst others) are expected back.
BEAT STANFURD!
Any reason for this? Or do ruggers just like being different
