Rugby Flash: Cal and BYU to Clash for Championship


Cal's rugby Bears will square off against the Cougars of BYU to reclaim the USA Rugby Division I national collegiate crown on Saturday. Tomorrow's match will be the fifth consecutive contest between Cal and BYU for the national title.

Cal defeated up-and-coming Arkansas State 83-37 in a semifinal match at Stanford's Steuber Rugby Stadium this afternoon. Earlier, BYU won its semifinal by a 63-28 margin over Army.

The Bears kick off against the Cougars at 7 pm (Pacific) tomorrow.

In other Division I action, the Stanford Cardinal women defeated Brown University 43-32 to line up a final challenge against defending champion Penn State. The Nittany Lions won their semifinal contest 30-13 against Army.

The women's first division final will kick off at 5 pm (Pacific), immediately preceding the men's game. Penn State and Stanford are meeting for the sixth consecutive time in the national chamionship match.
