Bears to Meet Bruins in Sweet 16s

The first round in this year's national rugby championship will feature a "beary" familiar rivalry for Berkeley fans.  Cal's #2-seeded Bears will meet the UCLA Bruins in pool play two weeks from now.

This afternoon, the Bruins defeated Cal Poly-SLO 24-19 in a Los Angeles playoff, winning the #15 seed in the USA Rugby Round of 16.

The ursine NorCal/SoCal face-off will take place in Marietta, Ga. on Saturday, Apr. 17 at 1 p.m. Pacific Time.

Two other championshp berths were awarded this afternoon. In Moraga, Calif., St. Mary's trounced UC-Davis 41-19 to take the #11 seed. The Gaels will challenge sixth-seeded Arkansas State in Santa Barbara on Apr. 16.

The #12 seed was won by Utah after defeating Central Washington University 27-10 in Ellensburg, Wash. The Utes take on #5 seed Texas A&M in Georgia on Apr.17.

If Cal defeats the Bruins, the Bears move on to an Apr. 18  quarterfinal match against the winner of the #10 Louisiana State-#7 Penn State contest.
