I’m pretty sure they did more than just win… I think they established supreme dominance over Bay Area baseball (again)

I’m happy that the As won last night even though it is obviously meaningless.
I feel like there is so much vitriol and anti-As sentiment from the Giants fans, its happy just to get one parting shot in from time to time.

Cal Hosting WNIT Championship
The California Golden Bears are headed home to host the WNIT Championship game after defeating the Illinois State Redbirds, 61-45, in Normal, Ill. The Bears will host the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday, April 3 at 11 a.m. in Berkeley in the Championship Game. Tickets go on sale Friday morning at 9 a.m.

Second place is not the first loser
Junior Mike Morrison completed his first decathlon of the 2010 season Thursday, finishing second at the prestigious Texas Relay with 7,557 points – a total ranks fifth in Cal history and is the highest for a Golden Bear since Bevan Hart accumulated 8,002 points in 2000.
Baseball
Behind solid pitching from sophomore right-hander Erik Johnson and a five-run fourth inning, the Cal baseball upended No. 18 Arizona, 7-2, Thursday afternoon at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears improved their overall record to 14-10 and captured their first Pac-10 contest (1-3) after losing three last weekend at No. 1 Arizona State. Offensively, Cal was paced by junior first baseman Mark Canha, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and increased his hitting streak to 15 games.
Johnson improved his record to 4-1 on the year by throwing 6.0 innings with six hits, one run, one walk and six strikeouts against an Arizona squad that entered the game leading the Pac-10 with a .372 team batting average. Johnson gave up his lone run when he yielded a solo home run to Steve Selsky to lead-off the top of the second inning.
Down 1-0, the Bears came back strong, but under scary circumstances. Canha led-off the bottom of the fourth inning with a line shot that ricocheted off the head of Wildcat freshman right-hander Kurt Heyer and bounded past Arizona first baseman Rafael Valenzuela for a double. Heyer was taken out of the game, but it was later reported that he was fine.

THUNDERBIRD INVITATIONAL NEXT UP FOR CAL
After being out of action for just more than two weeks over spring break, Cal returns to the links for the Thunderbird Invitational hosted by Airzona State this Friday-Saturday, Apr. 2-3. The two-day 54-hole event will take place at the ASU Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz. The first 36 holes are scheduled to be played Friday with the final 18 set for Saturday. Play begins each day at 7:30 a.m. PDT/MST.
1000 wins! What?
When asked which of the games in her career at the helm of the California softball team stick out most in her mind, head coach Diane Ninemire sits back and rifles through countless innings of Golden Bear softball. With only two wins to go until she reaches the 1000-win platform, Ninemire, who is in her 23rd year at the helm, has to think for a moment before coming to a decision. She has plenty from which to choose – from the 2002 World Series Championship to any of the nine trips to the Women’s College World Series that she has guided the Bears to the 998 wins and 483 losses.
Practice getting more competive
Okanes posted a new blog entry on getting competitive.
Jeff Tedford’s focus on competition this spring is making for some lively practices. At the end of practice tonight, Tedford told the team that they wouldn’t have to run three 100-yard sprints if long snapper Matt Rios could hit the base of the goal post with a snap. When he missed, the team went double or nothing. Rios squarely hit the base, setting off a wild celebration among the Bears.
Wo, thanks MN Bear. Thats great!
But now you’ve screwed yousrelf over. Now that we know you are capable of cutting and pasting (a skill beyond the abilities of most CGBers), we’ll be whining and complaining about how we can’t bring the official stories over and oh could you, MN Bear, do it.

CGB Fitness Challenge update
Made my first trip to the gym yesterday since I moved. Overall it’s nicer than my old gym was, with newer and more plentiful equipment. It also seemed more crowded, though.
Anyway! Since it was my first workout in many months, I spread the pain out and did a bunch of different exercises, with relatively light weights and higher reps. I did:
30 mins of Cardio
Lat Pulldown
Compound Row
Dumbbell Bench Press
Dumbbell Fly
Barbell Curl
Leg Extension
Abdominal Machine
I also decided it would be a good idea to start my day with some stretching and exercises like Kodiak did yesterday, I think… So first thing this morning I did some pushups and lunges.
I’m only mildly sore at the moment.

Motivation and speed/pace variance. When there’s a guy/girl yelling at you to get out of your saddle and climb – its pretty motivating. Add in the music and difficulty variance, an hour spin class is far superior to an hour on the exercise bike.

Addendum .
Very important to watch what you eat and to consume adequate protein in a day. Unfortunately, for the first 5 years of working out I didnt pay attention to my diet. I cheated myself out of seeing real gains.
Now, I attempt to get at least 150gms of protein a day. I should be hitting 200gms a day (which I reach some days), but it’s damn tough to eat 7 meals a day.
- Mass protein consumption aids in producing some monster shits.

200 g is nearly impossible to hit if you’re not eating steaks every meal, or just more meals in general. I barely managed 120 a day when I was going a lot more than I do now, but it was delicious.

150 is relatively easy to get to if you are making a conscience effort.
by 33SwisherSweet on Apr 2, 2010 11:02 AM PDT up reply actions
Well, let’s see. I used to eat three egg whites in the morning, a protein shake, chicken breast and vegetables for lunch, and a steak and potatoes for dinner. So that’s about
3 eggs * 8 g
shake * 35 g
chicken * 40 g
steak * 35
Which was around 120. Those protein amounts are mostly estimates, but I don’t think they’re too far enough. What was I supposed to do, just eat more meals? I was trying to lose some weight at the time too.
Proud to hold season tickets to the only NBA team soon to be owned by a Russian oligarch.
by yellow fever on Apr 2, 2010 11:09 AM PDT up reply actions
Yes, eat more meals. On top of all this, your body can't
absorb more than 35-40gms at a sitting. It’s serious work to hit the magic 1.5x body weight levels of protein.
I do a shake, two bars, some chicken, etc throughout the day. Like I said, I rarely, if ever, hit 200gms. 150 is pretty easily attainable if you try.

http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm
Lets say you’re 6’0", 200lb, 28 years old, and exercise 5 times a week:
A 500 calorie/day deficit puts you at 2243 calories.
A reasonable split is 40% protein 30% carbs 30% fat.
So 897 calories from protein = 224g
673 calories from carbs = 168g
673 calories from fat = 75g.
That’s a good starting point, then figure out what works best for your body/lifestyle.

It’s not, but Catholicism is not really culturally Indian in any significant way. I’d say that Goanese culture probably should be considered distinct. Though, I dunno, maybe there’s an argument to be made that they’ve been there long enough that should be considered as a part of Indian culture. I dunno.
I certainly would say that the Farsis are definitely authentically Indian at this point, for example, but it’s hard to know where to draw the line.

“Goanese” is just silly. There’s no reason not to just stop at “Goan”, so I can’t understand why it’s as widely used as it is.
I understand what you’re saying, but Catholicism (or Christianity, really) is enough of a part of Goan culture that I’d expect that just by virtue of being raised Goan you’d at least be aware of Catholic culture. But, that’s my limited experience/knowledge talking, and I’m ignorant as shit.
Also, Goans aren’t Indians, is that what you were trying to say? I’m not sure if I misread that.
Alls I knows is I get tasty food on Sunday and I enjoys it.

I’m honestly not that familiar with Goa, and I’m kind of talking out of my ass a bit. I’ve been to Diu once, which was interesting. And look, sure, the former Portuguese outposts are Indian, that’s not what I said at all. I guess my point, made quite sloppily, was that perhaps Catholicism is sort of culturally distinct in a way.

Hah, honestly it’s nothing AT ALL interesting or exciting. I was living over on the border of SF/Daly City and last year I bought a house in Hayward with my gf. I was working out regularly the first half of 2009, but the house search, purchase, and move pretty much derailed my routine, and then we’ve been doing home improvement projects and stuff, and my commute is much longer, and I just never got back into the habit of exercising, so I’ve gotten out of shape.
Anyway, a couple of days ago here in the DBD we were talking about exercising, and so Kodiak and I decided to challenge each other to lose about 15 pounds or so by September 4th, which is the first Cal Football home game. We’re still figuring out the details of the bet, but it’s just meant to be a friendly wager to motivate each other. So, I’m trying to develop a routine and stick to it.

Great job! I would recommend splitting into muscle specific days — I used to do chest/tris, back/bis, and shoulders/legs. Then every few months I changed to chest/bis, back/tris, and shoulders/legs. Also, what kind of sets/reps are you doing?
I’m going to switch over to muscle-specific days in about a week or so, once my body is used to exercising again.
Is it a better idea to do two muscle groups at a time? I was doing Arms (bis/tris/forearms), Chest, Back, and Legs each on a separate day before, but maybe it’s better to break it up a little more.

honestly, don’t worry about specific days. Take a look at that thing I sent you, you’ll notice a lot of compound movements that make sure you get the most out of each exercise. Unless you’re really bulking up for something, dumbbell curls are a waste of your time.
?
BTW, I didn’t get a chance to go to the bookstore yesterday, but I’m going to head over there today.

Well I was working out 3 days a week, and those alignments seemed most natural to me, since most chest exercises also work tris, and most back exercises also work bis. Also, I would say that the lat pulldown is a good start, you really want to be doing pullups more than just machine pulldowns (obviously, after you’ve worked yourself back a bit). Oh, and I would throw in forearms usually on 2 days a week, toward the end of my workout between sets.
I HATE pullups/chinups; they are my least favorite exercises. I know they’re really good for you, though. I’m just not strong enough to do very many of them, so it’s largely a futile endeavor.

Start with the weight assisted ones, the ones where you stand/kneel on a pad that effectively reduces your body weight for the exercise. You will build up much faster than you think. My little brother went from being able to do 0 pullups to 11 within a few months.
Yeah. The weight-assisted ones make me feel like SUCH a wuss, but… it’s probably well worth doing.

ATOMS. Listen up and listen good. I didn't like pullups either.
HOWEVER, I just started doing them as part of my routine. Started at 6-7. Before you knew it, I was busting out sets of 10 super easy. I could probably knock out a solid 20 depending on the day right now. Pullups are an excercise in which you see gains fairly quickly. Just stay at it. Dont use that wussy assisted machine either. If you can only do 2 then try to do 2 1/2. After your 1/2 pull up – do another 1/4. Before you know it, you’ll be able to do 3 pullups. It’s a good feeling.

Thanks, man. Back in grad school I had worked my way up to doing a couple of sets of 10, but that feels like a long time ago now. It was very gratifying to finally be able to do them, though.

Eh, I think with the speed of trends, and especially the internet – the age of Expos being useful is long gone. I mean, who knows where the last two Expos prior to Shanghai were? ( Zaragoza Spain and Aichi Japan, incidentally).
I will be there, however. My company has something important going on there – I may spend up to 60% of my work time this summer on the Expo site. I am not looking forward to spending a summer commuting to Pudong (pu-jersey) nor 100 degree/90% humidity days with those aforementioned Chinese country bumpkin tourists.

OH NOES MARSHAWN
Marshawn Lynch, Bills running back: A week ago, I asked Bills general manager Buddy Nix if Lynch still had a place on the team. Lynch has a poor reputation when it comes to character, and a new GM and head coach might not be as tolerant as the previous leadership. Nix replied, “That’s up to him. He’s like everybody else. We expect him to be [in the backfield]. We need two backs. We think that he’s a really good player, and we want him to be there. We’re all starting new, all starting fresh.” Then Lynch, who lost his job as the feature back to Fred Jackson last year, was among the no-shows when the Bills opened their offseason workout program Tuesday. Attendance is voluntary, but that’s not the best way to make a first impression on head coach Chan Gailey.

BBall team getting some help from Tosh
It certainly has been a busy few weeks for St. John’s junior Richard Rodgers. The highly recruited wide receiver was offered a football scholarship to play for Notre Dame yesterday, bringing the number of offers on the table to five.
The scholarship offer from Notre Dame is interesting because the Irish recently hired Assumption College graduate Brian Kelly, whom Rodgers said made a good impression on him.
"I spoke with Coach Kelly, and he told me that it would be great to have me on the team," Rodgers said in an e-mail. "He said he is looking forward to having a player from where he grew up."
The Fighting Irish’s offer followed a recent offer from Oregon. Rodgers’ cousin, Jarius Byrd, played for the Ducks before getting drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the second round in 2009.
"Oregon has had a chance to come out here and see me play basketball, and they said they need a great athlete to get to the next level," Rodgers said.
Maryland, Boston College and California also made previous offers. The Cal offer is intriguing because not only is that where his father, Richard, went, but the school is open to the idea of Rodgers trying to walk on to the basketball team as well. – Jim Wilson, Press Telegram

Yes, you read that right. Virgins. By choice. This is so fucking insulting to people like me who were virgins during high school, but not by choice! So I was at the John Mayer concert with Mrs. Sec113, and we’re sitting in the top level. See, only two types of people sit at the top level. Either you’re too poor to get better seats, or you don’t wanna stand up. The poor people are usually teeny boppers and their dads, but sometimes they’re the really really drunk forty-year-olds wearing tiny skirts. Guess what, John Mayer can’t see you up here! OTOH, you can tell who’s not planning on standing up because they’re the ones buying tubs of popcorn. Seriously, who buys tubs of popcorn at a concert? … Fat people, that’s who.
Hello? Is this thing on?
I sat 9th row, floor level. (my friend is an insane fan)Anyhoo, in MYYY section, it was almost exclusively couples and large groups of uncoordinated and overweight women. While being constantly elbowed in the stomach by the very large woman next to me wasn’t fun, I actually found the scores of public make-out sessions going on around me much more annoying.

you probably didn’t see any couples groping each other cuz you were one of them. but even if you were one of the four couples not making out, did you er… have your hands full that evening when you and the wifey got home. i swear every women left HP a little bit friskier.

Sanders has been married twice — to Carolyn Chambers, with whom he has two children (Deiondra and Deion Jr.), and Pilar Biggers with whom he has 3 children (Shilo, Shedeur and Shelomi).
That’s not quite as awesome as Allen Iverson’s family though.

Kobe extended
…for three years. Zing!
Kobe Bryant has signed a three-year contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers, the team announced Friday.

He’ll be 35 in three years. Too much risk to extend beyond then.

From the team’s POV, most definitely. And I’m sure Kobe’s agent realizes this, so there must have been some balance of riskiness of a short contract vs possibility of large payoff later vs getting paid enough to like the three-year deal.
Not quite.
Rookie scale contracts may be extended for up to five seasons beyond the player’s last option season, bringing the total contract length to six seasons. All other extensions are limited to five seasons, including the seasons remaining on the current contract. For example, a contract with two seasons remaining may be extended for up to three additional seasons.
from this MONSTER FAQ on the NBA CBA
I’m not sure if Kobe’s ETO would have nullified the last two years on his deal (meaning he has two years left on his existing deal but now that he has an extension, doesn’t have an opt-out) or just one year (extended it to four total), but I suppose in the latter case he did leave some money on the table by not extending to the full five years.

Len Pasquarelli's draft notes
This is the time of the draft evaluation process when teams get antsy if a prospect, particularly a player in whom a club is about to invest millions, suffers so much as a hangnail. So it wasn’t all that surprising when a few teams raised a red flag about Rolando McClain, who recently confided that he has battled Crohn’s disease for several seasons, and asked the Alabama star to undergo a rigorous physical exam. ESPN.com has learned that McClain, the consensus top inside linebacker in the draft class and often linked in the first round by some mock drafts to the New York Giants or the Miami Dolphins, had an extensive battery of tests Thursday, including a colonoscopy.
I wonder what Bama FOTW thinks about that.

Suspected cocaine-snorting SFPD drug-lab tech has (bio?)chemistry degree from Cal, and did fairly poorly with respect to grades. Now I’m trying to guess which one of my former students would be most likely to busted in the future for stealing cocaine.
I’m going to finally try and learn how to read and write and my mother tongue. I always wanted to but never got around to it. It’s going to be hard….
In other words, Go Bears!

Oakland Raiders
According to a report, the team is parting ways with the KSFO radio station. The team is moving to KFRC and KITS Live in 2010.
