CGB Census: Cal Fans, Where'd You Live Freshman Year?
Suspended Furniture (via gwaldon)
Continuing on with our poll smoking escapades (Jobs on Monday, Majors on Tuesday), we get even more Berkeley specific. Where'd we all start when we were here?
Freshman year. Our first experience with the Berkeley lifestyle, our first orientation with the way things worked. But we often began with a building and a floor (Ida Sproul 5th Floor. Cunningham 7th floor. And so on.). And then freshman year happened. And for the most part it rocked, it kicked our asses, and we all moved on. But I'm guessing most of us enjoyed that first year experience way more than our majors and definitely more than our jobs.
Vote in the poll and comment away. Where'd you live freshman year and what was it like?

4th Floor Unit 1 Cheney Rules!

I just love Unit 1
Great location (very close to campus, close to Memorial), plus it is very social. A lot of people I know that live in Bowles and Foothill say that they hardly know anyone living on their floors. I find this pretty sad. On my floor of around 30 kids, I would consider 15 or so at least pretty close friends. Within this group of 15, I consider about 6 others (including my twin brother), extremely good friends that I will continue to stay in continuous contact with in the years after school. This group of 7 (including me) are all getting a house together next year, and I can’t wait for the tailgating/parties/kickbacks we will have there. We are also planning several road trips to football games next year. The fact that some people are deprived of such friendships because they live in less social settings is a very depressing thought, as I feel they are not getting a great college experience

Well, the suite experience at Foothill isn’t exactly congenial towards meeting your neighbors. Because they’re suites, you have to go knock on a suite door first, and that made it a hassle to get to know anybody beyond your suite. I’ll admit, despite having single rooms, the half-year I spent in Unit 1 (Putnam!) was one of the two best reshall experiences I had in the system.
(It’s a long story as to how I spent a half-year at Unit 1, but despite moving in at the beginning of Spring, my floor made every effort to include me as part of their gang, which I desperately needed at that time.)

Yeah
At first my roommate (brother) and I were a little shy I suppose, staying in our room for the first few days, getting accustomed to living on our own. However, our floor made a conscious effort to include everyone on our floor, setting up floor events and such. For example, one night we had a floor sleepover in the 3rd floor lounge, during which everyone got to know each other a lot better. Now we all do everything together (it’s funny when a group of 15 people shows up to the door of a frat party :P)

Unit 1 here too
I’m in Putnam. I definitely love the location because it’s not too far from campus, Memorial Stadium, or Haas Pavilion, and Southside has a great selection of food. I too started off not being very social (but instead of a few days, it was more like a few months…) but I’ve been hanging out with my floormates more often now. My floor doesn’t seem to be as social as some of the others, where people go in and out of each other’s rooms all day, but there’s a group of about a dozen people who are pretty close.
I’m gonna be in Foothill next year. I actually wanted Unit 1 again but because of a housing application snafu on the part of my intended roommate, I couldn’t get my choice. I’ve asked some people I know in Foothill currently, and they’ve said that it’s not too bad as long as you get a larger suite of 10 people or more, so that you’re not stuck with 4 or 5 others whom you may not end up liking. I’m the type of person who prefers to have fewer close friends than a large group of acquaintances, so I’m hoping this new experience next year will work out for me. I also would prefer the quiet of Foothill, because frankly the noise around Unit 1 and the frats gets annoying sometimes (I don’t party very often). I rarely ever go to Northside either, so I’ll be able to explore a new side of Berkeley as well.
Also, Putnam Porn supposedly was recorded on the 5th floor, and a Daily Cal reporter actually came to my room and said that it was one of the rooms where it might have happened.
Eh
Thinking about it, we were probably a little shy for more like a couple weeks than a couple days. College is a big adjustment and takes some time getting used to

Do they still have bandwidth limits in the dorms? I had my internet suspended on multiple occasions. Had to file a report on why excessive usage is bad. I wrote that if bandwidth isn’t used, it’s lost forever so I’m actually just getting the best value out of my connection.

Which is why DC++ was so great.
Also great, the fact that you can access DC++ on campus through the wireless network without bandwidth limits. Less great: slower speeds.

I was in the dorms at the right time when there was a bandwidth limit but an active DC++ Cal network that let everyone in the dorms trade files with each other and not use any bandwidth as far as the meters were concerned. Nice thing about DC++ was that you could find just about anything you wanted on the Cal network and at that time the RIAA wasn’t randomly suing students.

When I went to CAL, they were still figuring out if calculators would be allowed in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics classes. The HP calculators were about $600 (about a year’s tuition) so few students had them, but they were concerned we might store answers in them.

I had an HP12C calculator (the financial one) for BusAd classes, lost it, and had to buy another. FML. Of course, found the original as soon as I bought and scratched the new one. Still have them both 25 years later, still use them to figure out amortization!
I remember on our dorm roommate questionnaire, there was a question about whether you would like a roommate with a computer or without, because PCs were still new. I, of course, knew any roommate who had a computer would be a total geek, so checked ‘no computer’.
Haha yeah its 12 GB
Funny you mention it, I just went over the limit for the first time last week XD But first time violators just need to take a quick quiz to get internet access back

Whatever you are talking about did not exist when I was in the dorms, and we had to use Mail and Pine to exchange email. And then you would “ping” someone to see if they were online and use IRC to chat with them.

My year was on the cutting edge of that newfangled “em-pee-three” technology. I remember my friend ripped “The Monorail Song” from the Simpsons soundtrack for me. It took two hours, but it was totally worth it! Good times sharing music on the building’s LAN. It was my early musical education, along with used CDs from Amoeba and Rasputin.
Inter-floor Starcraft LAN battles were epic.

I was in a 4th floor Putnam double, 2002-2003. We had a nice view of the Campanile which is now blocked by the new towers. Having a DC right downstairs was awesome, as opposed to walking down the street to the super DC on Bowditch that opened my spring semester. The landscaping was nicer then too, much like it still is at Unit 3. There were more trees and grass in the courtyard, instead of that strange concrete maze that’s there now. I didn’t really hang out with my floor that much though, after I pledged in the fall I spent most of time at the fraternity.
If I had to choose again, I’d pick Clark Kerr. It just seemed so far on the map when you choose housing options. It’s laid back but social, and all the cute girls seem to end up there. it’s also great if you have lots of chem classes first year so you can walk back and forth on a flat path while passing by Memorial Stadium.

I lived in Dwight Derby (Clark Kerr) Building 12. Loved it unreservedly. The parking, the dining hall, the running track, the lovely spaciousness of it (maybe not the coed bathrooms, though). It was pleasantly but not raucously social, and I made many many good friends.
And I think it was good for me, not just for the unavoidable 2 miles of walking each day, but because it kind of forced me to spend time on campus during the day, as it was just that little bit too far to go back to my room between classes.

I was lived in Unit 3, Spens-Black Floor 6! How cool is that? I was in Room 604 for the 2004-05 school year. That school year Spens-Black was the transfer student dorm, so technically this was my junior year, but first year at Cal.
by BornOnThePlay on Apr 14, 2010 1:33 PM PDT up reply actions
One of my best friends currently was on Spens-Black 7th floor while I lived on 8th . . . same year, but we didn’t meet until 4 years after that when at my birthday party, she was a “can I bring some girls” invite of a friend of mine . . .in a random bar. . .in Hong Kong.
She walks up to me and says “You look really familar – did you go to Cal” – turns out we lived one floor apart, but since she had a boyfriend in Unit III (Norton?) she was never at Spens. She said she recognized me from the 2 am fire drills.
Unit 2, Davidson, 7th floor, 2003-04 – the damned construction year that made the entire block look like a war zone and cost us our lounge, amongst other amenities that everybody else enjoyed after that year.

Little did I know my future husband was on the seventh floor of the building I use to check my mail in freshman year, but I did I meet my future husband on the fifth floor of Ehrman when he was visiting a mutual friend. Thought he was the biggest dork in the world. He still is but I love him.

Bowles. I loved it because it was so social. I found that the people who lived in the Units (and Foothill) seemed to have a very “floor” or “suite” oriented view on things. But in Bowles, I found it to be much less focused on the immediate area and open to people from all 7 flooors.

is quite true. Don’t have a problem with that at all, but it is true that the only people I hang out with outside of class are from my floor.

My first experience at Cal was indicative of the socialness of Bowles. I organized an ultimate frisbee game at Kleeburger by going door to door. People were as nice as ever and it was a great way to get everybody together at the start of the year. We played lot of ultimate frisbee on Klee that year.

This blog is practically run by Cal Band alums and no TH? Not that it matters. I wasn’t a freshman at Cal. I transferred in as a junior.
I have always wondered what that’s like to transfer into a school, especially so late. Do you feel like you missed out on some of the student experience? Does it feel like you only had half of college? Not sure if this applies to you or not, but especially for another who takes the JC-UC route…..do they feel like they missed out on some of college?
by Missing Barry on Apr 14, 2010 1:38 PM PDT up reply actions
yes.
I transferred from UCSC, and tried as much as possible to absorb Berkeley. Lived in Unit 2 my first year, but definitely felt different than the freshies. I mean, they were doing the college thing for the first time, and really it was my second crack at a first year. I’m just glad I lived in on the southside as a transfer. I do wish I had gone to berkeley first and gone through the whole experience from the beginning…. but SC did have its quirks in growing up. totally different experience.

Yes and no. I was really bitter when all my friends went off to school freshman year, but once I got rolling, I enjoyed my time at the JC I went to, made friends with people who I didn’t go to high school with and took care of business. Cal was always a part of me from the time I was born, so it wasn’t like I wasn’t stoked to get there. I had season tickets the two years before I became a student. I could have gone away as freshman, but opted not to, becasue Cal was where I wanted to be. It did seem rushed becasue I felt like I had to cram four years worth of on my own living into two years, whcich is proabably why my grades sucked so bad after getting straight A’s y first two. I’m glad I didn’t live in a dorm, though. I got one year of community living in the band house and then did the apartment thing northside on Spruce.
As a JC transfer student I generally don’t feel that I missed out on all that much. JC gave me the time mature to figure out what I wanted to major in, and also I was able to get some genuine work experience which I wouldn’t have gotten if I went straight to a 4-year. I generally had a good time at JC and made some great friends. Most importantly JC gave me a second chance to get into Cal and as far as classes go, I enjoyed taking basic classes like Calculus and basic Econ in smaller classes that JC offered.
Granted after I got to Cal I had an absolute blast. Though I have to imagine that my dorm experience would not have been quite the same if I wasn’t able to buy booze legally and go to the bar with just about everyone on my floor. Though my time at Cal was rather short, I was still able to enjoy college life and even joined a fraternity, I do wish I had more time to enjoy college life in Berkeley but I wouldn’t necessarily trade that for my JC experience. The only thing I felt I really missed out on was doing UCDC or the Cal in Sacramento summer programs because I only had one real summer at Cal and I didn’t realize I wanted to do those programs until my 2nd year at Cal.
One last note, I graduated high school in 2001 so I was able to miss out on the 1-10 season and come to Cal in 2004 and have that season be my first Cal football experience.
by BornOnThePlay on Apr 14, 2010 3:33 PM PDT up reply actions
I do feel like I missed out to an extent
There are a number of classes I wish I could have taken that I just didn’t have time for. I’ve always been very conscious that I’m only here for 2 years, so I don’t want to settle in too much (i.e. pick a church, etc.). I also wish I could have been around for more sports, and had my HydroTech job longer. I definitely could have seen myself working there 3 or 4 years in college.
Going to JC first was DEFINITELY the right choice for me, though. I got to play water polo for 2 more years (I wasn’t good enough for Cal’s National Championship caliber team), and get some subjects I’m not good at (like math) out of the way with easy classes. Biggest plus of the JC —→ Cal route though: grand total student debt of $0.00.

This was awkward at first, then about a year later it didn’t feel weird at all to be having a shower right next to a girl humming.
I can recall a time in TH where I was taking a shower, and all the showers were occupied, and there was a crowd in the rest of the bathroom, might have been right after a game. The girl in the middle stall started singing a Disney tune, the person in the stall next door joined in, and then I started singing and eventually the whole bathroom was singing along. Doubt that would have happened in a bathroom only occupied by dudes. Random but fun. I still went to the main floor bathroom to take a shit whenever possible.

Unit 1 Cheney 3rd Floor
I put in for no preference in rooms when I went to Cal and wouldn’t you know it I ended up on the male only floor! I was amazed at the co-Ed bathrooms. Still, my floor managed to bond really well and I remember late nights of staying up talking about stupid stuff and planning shennanigans against the all female floor. It was pretty cool and I am glad I had the experience.

Oh, how the Cal Band loves its acronyms. Didn’t even think about using TH…
Tellefsen Hall is correct, but it’s not really a frat. When I lived there is was completely co-ed (including the bathrooms). And there is no real relationship with the university, like a frat or sorority would have.
Where is it? I don’t think I knew a single band person in my time at Cal, though I found out many years later that Oski my junior year was a really good friend of mine! It finally made sense why I was always being made to kiss his snout.
Knowing Oski, that’s probably a euphemism.

Did anyone live in I-House? Do you have to be an international student to live there?

No, I have several non-international friends who currently reside there.

I always wish I’d spent more time there.

Clark Kerr, Building 7
Thought I would hat it because it was so “far” from campus. But I loved it here. Social place, spacious halls, good dining hall, nice atmosphere. It was a great year.
I am a Vereenian.
Bldg 3 here
I liked Clark Kerr, came back for another year (Bldg 12), then RA in Bowles for two years (which was fantastic).
CKC West
I think it was building 9, but I’m not sure. I was in a 7 person suite with 2 bathrooms, and this huge livingroom. We even had a rare outside door and got the key handed down to us by the previous year’s residents, who became our good friends.
I am still close friends with that group after 20 years – it was an awesome experience.

Transfer,
but lived in a fraternity my entire time here. I’ve met some good friends in the house, and it’s an amazing deal, but good thing I didn’t move into one as a freshman. Frat life just really isn’t for me at all. Although it was AMAZING to have a cook for my first 2 semesters…
I've been Honked...
Lived in a fraternity house for my junior and senior years. Joined a fraternity. Didn’t think I could in such an environment my Sophomore year so I moved into an apartment. But then, got over it pretty quick once I found out that a semester rent at the house was less than what I was paying for a month at the apartment and didn’t have to pay for utilities.
Foothill, Hillside baby!
Suite 8B21 – the backwards suite, because our emergency exit was on the south side of the suite (every one else’s was on the north side. Because our suite was right at the back gate of Foothill, we’d be going a different direction than everyone else :)
As a chem major, living in Foothill kicked ass because it was only a 5 minute walk to Pimentel and CoC. Rolling out of bed at 10am (for a 10am class) was pretty awesome, compared to all those Unit 1/2/3 suckers who had to walk up that big-ass hill to get to class. As far as Foothill not being social, I heartily disagree. I had friends in plenty of different suites and on the LaLoma side too, so it was plenty social. Had friends in Stern too. It was also great for me because I never had to worry about living on some crazy floor in the units where there might be crazy parties and all that stuff I didn’t want where I lived.
I lived in the Unit 3 as an RA, and I’m certainly glad for that experience. I’m glad I got to see both sides of the coin, I can certainly see the upside of living in the Units as well.
CGB: Wasting Your Potential, Your Time, & Your Life Since 2006.
My floor as a freshman was almost all sophmores – which made it a slightly quieter floor (since they were all freshman friends and didn’t go in for the wild freshman hall water fights and other stuff – so I hung out a lot on the 6th floor and the 5th floor (all girls) but when I wanted to study or some quiet time – I coul dretreat to the 8th
Cloyne Court Co-op
that’s right.
1. I was denied assignment to dorm, but parents had slipped in co-op application for me as fall-back. (Dad is a physics guy so he thought Cal was the best education/dollar. He planned ahead on co-op (big housing shortages at the time) and convinced me Cal the only place I needed apply. It was an easy sell: I didn’t even know what college was, much less that there were options. Anyways, he planned ahead.)
2. I had never been to Berkeley before I started school, and on top of that had not been exposed to the kind of things unfettered college students do with free time.
3. Mom and a family friend drove me up my first semester, dropped me off for orientation and they went to unload my duffel bag. They park on Ridge Rd, see some scruffy looking guy with stringy long hair and no shoes shuffling up the street, duck down in car, then look up to see him fishing a key out of his pants pocket and open the front door. They compose themseves, drop my stuff in my room and look out of window to see giant marijuana plant on balcony. Plant was tended by the same long hair guy. (Ken Atkins, nice guy, physics graduate student (so there, dad), died a couple of years later from heart failure.) Tears ensue, but mom was composed (again) by the time I arrived. Two weeks later another family friend is passing through town and mom has her bring cleaning supplies for me, just in case.
4. I stayed there all five years.
5. I went back a couple of years ago on college tour with the three young scholars I tutored from inner city Washington, D.C. The boys come from pretty rough circumstances, but they were shocked by the lack of cleanliness. I assured them it was much better in my day. (Which is probably true, in part because Barrington still existed as the extreme option in the system. Now that was a strange place.)
6. Obligatory anachronistic reference to show the youngsters what is the what: tutition: about $750/semester. room at board at coop: about the same. If you were frugal, and worked hard in the summer, you could make enough to pay all bills, avoid debt, and not need a part time job.

Most interesting. Cloyne in ’92 and ’93 was the place to go for weed, skankiness, and watching the lead singer of a band urinate on stage. It sure left an impression on me.

It sure hasn’t been any different this century.

I think the last few years Cloyne has tried to clean up its image, slightly, by imposing more stringent rules. Stuff like “no dealing heroin before 9am and stuff.”

I’m sorry.
I’ve been to Cloyne many times for parties/after-parties as I had friends who lived there. I would never want to live there due to how dirty it was
In other words, Go Bears!
This. I had many friends who lived there, but it was NOT for me. Sure, I might have missed out on some naked hall racing, a substance abuse problem, and an STD or three, but ah well.

I think Chateau is the extreme option now.
