Wrong decision

but, eh, it’s like the refs blowing a call in your favor. Just take the ball out of bounds and score some points.

Explanation

Many feel that Landry Fields is the best player in the Pac-10 even though his team sucks. I can see that argument.

Yeah, I normally am not one who believes you need to be on one of the best teams – but Fields is on one of the worst teams. He was very good – but it didn’t lead to many wins.

by Tedfordisgod on Mar 8, 2010 3:32 PM PST up reply actions

See, this is why think Fields shouldn’t get POY. His team was terrible. Even if he is the best ever, he wasn’t good enough this year.

by paleodan on Mar 8, 2010 3:34 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, that is what I meant to imply. No reason that you have to be on a great team to win POY, but I don’t think you should give it to a guy who is the only good player on a terrible team. Someone has to get stats!

by Tedfordisgod on Mar 8, 2010 3:49 PM PST up reply actions

According to Washington and Stanford posters, 74% of POY’s have come from 1st and 2nd-place conference teams, and no POY played on a team worse than 6th in conference. Stanford was T-8th best in conference (or rather, T-2nd worst in conference).

Numbers! I like it. That seems about right to me. Generally one of the best teams, but a decent number of players from other teams (26%).

by Tedfordisgod on Mar 8, 2010 6:30 PM PST up reply actions

You’d expect, in such a down year, that the conference awards would be heavily populated with youth. But I’m not really seeing much here. Six of ten are seniors on the first team. Eight of fifteen including the second team. Twelve of twenty including the honorable mentions. Five underclassmen total – 2 first team, 2 second team, 1 honorable mention.

I keep hearing that the Pac-10 is just having a down year and will bounce back, but I’m not seeing it. Are the incoming recruiting classes THAT good? The conference is way down this year, and it’s also losing a LOT of its talent. Can the underclassmen in the conference be expected to improve that dramatically – not only to replace the exiting seniors, but to improve upon them?

Doesn’t seem to me like the conference will be all that great next year either. Someone please tell me I’m wrong.

I have no idea on the recruits coming in for other pac 10 schools but I know how easily a team can go from crap to solid to even great with just one elite player and the pac 10’s had plenty of these elite guys come through over the years.

Not saying it won’t be bad next year but I’m pretty sure it won’t be this bad. This year was really, really bad.

by nickle on Mar 8, 2010 3:43 PM PST up reply actions

This year’s freshman class was pretty middling as well. But next year’s (espcially the Furd and UCLA classes) are supposedly back up to regular pac 10 speed. Take note, though, UCLA’s Drew Gordon, Bobo Morgon, Jrue Holiday, Jermine Anderson class was supposed to be #1 in the entire country. Now they look like a mess of fail.

by LeonPowe on Mar 8, 2010 5:58 PM PST up reply actions

Our class also looks like it could be quite good for next year. But we have a LOT to replace.

by Tedfordisgod on Mar 8, 2010 6:31 PM PST up reply actions

I think our class could be quite good for a number of years to come, but not really next year. Bottom line, they’re still freshmen. And while each of them brings specific, useful skills to the table and will earn playing time, none of them are dominant in the fashion any of our outgoing seniors* are.

(*) exception being Nikola, of course

It just hit me that Jerome Randle won Pac-10 Player of the Year.
Who would have thought that was possible four years ago?

by Tedfordisgod on Mar 8, 2010 3:50 PM PST reply actions

Not me, I was very skeptical of Jerome in his first two years and always thought it would be PC or Theo to take the reigns, four years ago I may have even put Michael Cer… Nikola above Jerome based on what they accomplished in their first year…

Monty giving the three amigos the right to shoot whenever they thought it was a good idea I think really sparked some confidence in them in these last two years

I guess getting one of the best PG coaches ever helped a bit.
