Cal Men's Basketball @ Stanford Game Thread

California Golden Bears at Stanford Cardinal, Mar 6, 2010 3:00 PM PST

Time: 3:00 PST/6:00 PM EST
TV: FSN
Radio: KFRC 1550 AM
Streams: Post links in comments.
Injury report:
Max Zhang is still out as he recovers from a punctured lung.

It may not have the nervous excitement of playing for the conference title against the 2nd best Pac-10 team at home, but going against the Cardinal in the last regular season game of the year with the chance to reaffirm conference supremacy is pretty cool too.  If Stanford didn't have enough motivation by playing spoiler against their rivals they can be motivated to avoid the play in game for the Pac-10 tournament.  Plus, Stanford will be honoring their seniors (Landry Fields and a bunch of other guys you may or may not have heard of.  Yes, Tavita Pritchard is on the basketball team for some reason).

Read Avi's excellent preview here.  Key point?

So most likely, it'll come down to a game of effort. If the Furd can come out with great intensity and energy, play over their heads, and get Cal to miss their shots, AND if Cal is afflicted with championship hangover, then they can make a game of it and really put a dent into our long-term aspirations.  From here on out, the target is on our backs, especially this week and in the conference tournament.

If we're going to be champions, we're going to have to keep on playing like champions. BEAT THE FURD!

And in case, for some reason, you can't get excited about playing the last place team in the Pac?  How about this tidbit from Ragnarok:

A win at Maples would also be Mike Montgomery's first in six years, and would give Cal their first season sweep over the 'Furd since 1993.  Moreover, it would be the first time Cal swept the Cardinal in both football and men's basketball in the same school year since 1982-83, before any of the current players were born, and when Mike Montgomery was still coaching at Montana.

Go Bears!

I expected ASU to beat fUCLA so I knew it would come down to Cal beating Stanfurd. Besides even if we had a 5 game lead, we would still need to beat Stanfurd!

Sure

I guess we could have called it when they had a 13-0 lead.

Hey Monty

In the second half, can you have someone guard Landry Fields please?

by yorzepol on Mar 6, 2010 3:54 PM PST reply actions

Not a real great half for the Bears

Other than Boykin and Theo, everyone else has been meh. Randle is clearly the focus so his struggles make sense and Christopher is settling for those 3s again (more drives PC. That’d be great.).

And yes, stopping Landry Fields would be great. Not expecting it though.

Email: bearsnecessities@gmail.com

by Avinash on Mar 6, 2010 3:56 PM PST reply actions

Keep going inside

It was working well there for a while, and should open up the 3s later. I’m not expecting to stop Fields. Slowing him down a bit would be nice.

by bear88 on Mar 6, 2010 3:58 PM PST up reply actions

It was working while furd was in man-to-man, the offense bogged down when they moved to a zone.

by chowder on Mar 6, 2010 4:01 PM PST up reply actions

We kept Fields to 20 pts. Granted that’s still a lot but, I think he’s got more than 10 so far.

The Ultimate Opportunist

by Rated-R Superstar on Mar 6, 2010 4:06 PM PST up reply actions

So

We need to keep him to 5 pts and 3 rebounds and were good. No problem?

by yorzepol on Mar 6, 2010 4:09 PM PST up reply actions

We don’t have anyone who can match up with Fields. I’m hoping Monty has a good halftime adjustment for that 1-2-2. For all his athleticism, PC remains just maddening the way he likes to settle for outside shots. They have even less shot-blocking than we do. Take. It. To. The. Hole.

by Kodiak on Mar 6, 2010 4:00 PM PST up reply actions

I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this, because the goal (outright conference championship in major men’s sport) is too enticing. And after a bit of relaxation, I’m back into full worry mode.

Email: bearsnecessities@gmail.com

by Avinash on Mar 6, 2010 4:35 PM PST reply actions

MSF

does have a fouling problem. I wonder if that’s related to conditioning. . . or having a chest 3 times the size of any other basketball player.

by LeonPowe on Mar 6, 2010 4:35 PM PST reply actions

I think it’s conditioning. He usually does okay for the first few minutes he’s in. Later on, his feet slow down and it makes him late on his rotations.

Fields can use a bit more diversity of moves. As in more than one, the jump stop is getting rather old, and would never work against a team with legit weak side shot blockers.

by ch0ster on Mar 6, 2010 4:58 PM PST up reply actions

Also, he can’t pass over defenders even if he elevates, instead he has to work around them, which is tough.

by chowder on Mar 6, 2010 5:00 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, he struggles with passing when pressured. That’s why we have trouble with really well-played zones.

by Kodiak on Mar 6, 2010 4:59 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, he isn’t a great passer off the dribble, so often when he is trapped and hoping to pass, he picks up the dribble in the backcourt. On the other hand, he can often break a press simply by dribbling through it.

by yorzepol on Mar 6, 2010 5:02 PM PST up reply actions

That may be true

But it doesn’t make the tournament (held in Los Angeles every year so UCLA would vote for the dumb thing) any less moronic.

I actually don’t think our Pac-10 tournament performance will affect us much, unless we either lose in the first round or win the thing.

by bear88 on Mar 6, 2010 5:05 PM PST up reply actions

Well I’d like to get at least two wins in the tourney. Helps out our seeding.

How about 9 more wins in a row as long as we’re talking about things we’d like. And a Aston Martin.

by LeonPowe on Mar 6, 2010 5:03 PM PST up reply actions

I’d prefer to lose in the Pac-10 tourney. Otherwise we could get disturbingly upset early in the real Dance. Hard to see these Bears pulling off huge winning streaks.

I would feel much better if we could get a 6 seed and I don’t think it’s inconceivable if we win the Pac-10 tourney.

Can I toss in an all-expense paid trip to Lake Baikal followed up by three days on an Indonesian beach?

by chowder on Mar 6, 2010 5:10 PM PST up reply actions

You’d want more than 3 days in Bali.

by LeonPowe on Mar 6, 2010 6:20 PM PST up reply actions

I think best case is a 7...and I'd be happy with that.

but I’m worried about being an 8 or 9. I’d rather be a 10 or 11 than an 8 or 9, just given the second round match-ups

That would hilarious! “Hey Landry, can you hand me the scissors?”

by BlackandOldGold on Mar 6, 2010 5:03 PM PST up reply actions

A very un-Old Blue-like thought, how fucking cool would it be to break the drought in basketball AND football in the same year?

Jinx

We’re finishing in eighth place.

Clearly the beer has gotten to me. Please forgive me, oh Juju. I freely admit that our sieve-like O-line and clueless D will lead to multiple ass-whoopings this fall.

Come on. Let’s enjoy this before the football team makes everyone sad again.

I am watching the “????” conference championship game with Mercer and East Tennessee St.

Mercer is the No. 6 seed, but the championship game is on their home court. How insane is that? At least it looks like they will lose.

Fitting

I was there for all the confetti last week against Arizona State, but this win – at Maples, against a team we haven’t beaten often in recent years – is really the perfect ending.

There’s no co-champions nonense. Fifty years without an undisputed championship in a major sport. At least I saw that before I died.

This is why we hated him when he was at the Farm

by yorzepol on Mar 6, 2010 5:05 PM PST up reply actions

Oh man did we hate him. His teams played smart, bruising, physical basketball. I would even say “brutish”

Also, I hated Brevin Knight.

With his psychotic eyes. Dude’s a total serial killer in training.

This game turned when P.Chris scored 7 points in 5 possessions. And the Furd had 3.

agreed, PC took over today’s game by making some high difficulty shots (which usually cause us to cringe)

Cigar night this week. WHO’S WITH ME?!

Remember, the enemy's end zone is DOWN!
