Cal Men's Basketball @ Stanford Game Thread
California Golden Bears at Stanford Cardinal, Mar 6, 2010 3:00 PM PST
Time: 3:00 PST/6:00 PM EST
TV: FSN
Radio: KFRC 1550 AM
Streams: Post links in comments.
Injury report: Max Zhang is still out as he recovers from a punctured lung.
It may not have the nervous excitement of playing for the conference title against the 2nd best Pac-10 team at home, but going against the Cardinal in the last regular season game of the year with the chance to reaffirm conference supremacy is pretty cool too. If Stanford didn't have enough motivation by playing spoiler against their rivals they can be motivated to avoid the play in game for the Pac-10 tournament. Plus, Stanford will be honoring their seniors (Landry Fields and a bunch of other guys you may or may not have heard of. Yes, Tavita Pritchard is on the basketball team for some reason).
Read Avi's excellent preview here. Key point?
So most likely, it'll come down to a game of effort. If the Furd can come out with great intensity and energy, play over their heads, and get Cal to miss their shots, AND if Cal is afflicted with championship hangover, then they can make a game of it and really put a dent into our long-term aspirations. From here on out, the target is on our backs, especially this week and in the conference tournament.
If we're going to be champions, we're going to have to keep on playing like champions. BEAT THE FURD!
And in case, for some reason, you can't get excited about playing the last place team in the Pac? How about this tidbit from Ragnarok:
A win at Maples would also be Mike Montgomery's first in six years, and would give Cal their first season sweep over the 'Furd since 1993. Moreover, it would be the first time Cal swept the Cardinal in both football and men's basketball in the same school year since 1982-83, before any of the current players were born, and when Mike Montgomery was still coaching at Montana.
Go Bears!

All on the Bears now to close out the season right.

Sure
I guess we could have called it when they had a 13-0 lead.

Loving the dribble penetration on those last two
And the passes to Boykin.

Dawkins looks so confused. Does he always look like that?

It was fantastic."

Is it just me or does the furd crowd sound eerily silent?

Not a real great half for the Bears
Other than Boykin and Theo, everyone else has been meh. Randle is clearly the focus so his struggles make sense and Christopher is settling for those 3s again (more drives PC. That’d be great.).
And yes, stopping Landry Fields would be great. Not expecting it though.

Keep going inside
It was working well there for a while, and should open up the 3s later. I’m not expecting to stop Fields. Slowing him down a bit would be nice.
Last game
We kept Fields to 20 pts. Granted that’s still a lot but, I think he’s got more than 10 so far.
Fields
He also has seven rebounds.

Stress
I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this, because the goal (outright conference championship in major men’s sport) is too enticing. And after a bit of relaxation, I’m back into full worry mode.
Same as always
We make our shots, we win. We don’’t, and things don’t go well.
We just need Jerome Randle to get it going. We’re doing surprisingly well with just about nothing (not to mention all the TOs) from JR.
Just got to weather the storm
Cardinal aren’t going to keep hitting shots like that.

I like his hustle and motor, but the dude doesn’t seem to have a high basketball IQ.

Dude is great at crashing the boards though. Need to set him up on the baseline.

It's a good thing Stanford can't shoot free thows
We’d be in big trouble otherwise.
Fields has 3 fouls. Hmm.
Anybody think MSF could have the potential to play a lot better next season after spending some more time in the weight room?

Haha yeah. Basically whatever makes him swap his body fat for muscle.

The good news
is that after Stanford’s big run, the Bears are hanging in there, and have gained a point from their 4-point halftime lead.
MSF
does have a fouling problem. I wonder if that’s related to conditioning. . . or having a chest 3 times the size of any other basketball player.
well according to marques johnson,
fields is an all-universe player. so i guess he gets all the calls his way

That's a big concern
both for this game and the postseason. Personally, I don’t care if he plays next week at all.
I just hope it's not the knee again...
though any injury to a baller like jorge is damaging.
when ‘furd post players shoot, it’s as good as a TO.
That’s why Fields doesn’t deserve POY…Besides Green, no one else can score at all.
Randle
His shot worked out like a pass to Boykin for the easy finish.

Phew
Got lucky there with the second posssession, and now a steal…
Green
It looks like he’s in some serious pain.

wait -
how can the official stop play?
Jorge laid on the court for 20 seconds in Haas without stoppage in play.
believe it did the first time against the cardinal when jorge got hurt
stanford too like a million shots
Christopher
He drives you nuts at times, but when he’s good, he’s really good.
Does Randle has a tendency to make mistakes in half court traps? I haven’t caught enough games on TV, but from what I have seen, that seems to be the case.

his stature may be a factor
tough to see over defenders
Yeah, he struggles with passing when pressured. That’s why we have trouble with really well-played zones.
I don't care about the tournament
The tournament is stupid.
Today was what mattered to me.
That may be true
But it doesn’t make the tournament (held in Los Angeles every year so UCLA would vote for the dumb thing) any less moronic.
I actually don’t think our Pac-10 tournament performance will affect us much, unless we either lose in the first round or win the thing.
Well I’d like to get at least two wins in the tourney. Helps out our seeding.
Email: bearsnecessities@gmail.com
I’d prefer to lose in the Pac-10 tourney. Otherwise we could get disturbingly upset early in the real Dance. Hard to see these Bears pulling off huge winning streaks.
Email: bearsnecessities@gmail.com
I think best case is a 7...and I'd be happy with that.
but I’m worried about being an 8 or 9. I’d rather be a 10 or 11 than an 8 or 9, just given the second round match-ups
That would hilarious! “Hey Landry, can you hand me the scissors?”

A very un-Old Blue-like thought, how fucking cool would it be to break the drought in basketball AND football in the same year?
Jinx
We’re finishing in eighth place.

Fitting
I was there for all the confetti last week against Arizona State, but this win – at Maples, against a team we haven’t beaten often in recent years – is really the perfect ending.
There’s no co-champions nonense. Fifty years without an undisputed championship in a major sport. At least I saw that before I died.
agreed, PC took over today’s game by making some high difficulty shots (which usually cause us to cringe)

THIS CALLS FOR A CELEBRATION
Cigar night this week. WHO’S WITH ME?!
