DBD 3.5.10 Academy Awards Thread
royrules said he'd have a DBD. I wake up, no DBD. royrules fails.
Anyways, Oscars are Sunday. I haven't cared about this for years, but most people do, so I'll put the stuff up. Will post comments below for each of the major categories. Analyze, predict, discuss the movies up for grabs, who should win and who will win. Since we've been using the Friday DBD for random weekend comments as well, this can also be your unofficial Oscar Thread for Sunday.
Note, if you're spoiling key elements of the movie, please indicate "SPOILER ALERT!" for the sake of those who haven't seen it. Or don't post anything and be flagged off the Internets.
The opinions expressed in a FanPost are, in every way, reflective of the opinions of every California Golden Blogs Marshawnthusiast. Moreover, they are reflective of every employee of SBNation, including Tyler "Blez" Bleszinski.

Avatar, The Blind Side, District 9, An Education, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, Precious, A Serious Man, Up, Up in the Air
Four questions to ponder for each of these.
1) Who should win?
2) Who will win?
3) Is there a movie not on this list that should be on this list?
Email: bearsnecessities@gmail.com
I saw 5 of these and I suspect one that I didn’t see SHOULD win.
Avatar was entertaining but best pic? Puh-lease
The Blind Side- warm and fuzzy and Sandra was surprisingly good but best pic? Puh-lease
District 9- cool movie, won’t win. Shouldn’t win
Inglorious Basterds- Jewish revenge fantasy was entertaining, nothing more
Up was ok. Won’t win
I have a sneaking suspicion that the Hurt Locker will win.

Assuming you mean in the theater, none really jumps out as spectacularly bad. I also am good at expunging bad movie experiences. I’d have to say that Year One, Miss March and He’s Just Not That Into You were the unholy trio with Miss March winning the title of shittiest movie I saw in 2009. Literally all of the funny parts were in the preview and the rest of the movie didn’t have a single laugh.
I’m looking forward to this one though. It will either be stupendously awesome or horrifically bad, no in between.
Cheestastic original cannot be topped!

You know what movie sucked the most though? I saw it on cable one day and couldn’t drag my eyes away.
Linsay Lohan starring in “I Know Who Killed Me”. Absolutely awesomely horrible, really stupid story and Lindsay actually saying “I know who killed me!” in earnest. Exhibit #2175 why Lindsay will be doing Cinemax porn by 2012.

Year One – and I like Michael Cera and Jack Black – was about the worst waste of two hours of my time since Matthew Broderick’s Godzilla or James Belushi in The Principal.
You willingly saw Year One?
Even I’m not a big enough fan of Olivia Wilde to make that sacrifice.
Shawn Spencer: "I’m receiving a transmission from your husband. Really more of a voicemail, if I'm being honest. A status update. Perhaps a twitter."
Burton Guster: "I believe it’s called a tweet."
Shawn Spencer: "There’s no way I’m saying that."
I had some small measure of hope for it. Sadly, I was betrayed.

Haven’t seen Hurt Locker and every time I read that title, thanks to CGB, I can only think about UDub’s QB.
That said, I’ll go with District 9 as my pick.

it’ll never happen. Cool movie though

I know. By “my pick”, I meant whta I would choose, not my prediction.
I’m a huge fan of movies like that and, in my mind, it would make up for the complete shafting that Children of Men got.

But you’re wrong! Don’t you see?
I can understand that though. I’m just a sucker for post-apocalyptic madness.

I was a little surprised because I’ve never had to defend that movie before. The only person who didn’t like it was my father, who thought it was depressing, and even he had to admit it was a great story.
I think I loved it BECAUSE it was depressing.
Twist, on the other hand, needs to watch movies to escape his sad existence of a life, where Mrs. TwistNHook (really just a female Tyler Durden) dictates to him what he must do and monitors him on a twenty-four hour basis.

Really?
The foreshadowing in that movie was incredibly overpowering
Am I known as Cugel the Clever for nothing?
See, I can’t tell if the foreshadowing was actually obvious or if it was obvious only because I knew the ending.
For instance, when I rewatch Sixth Sense or Unbreakable, the ending seems obvious because I know it. But I did not at the time.

Funny actually I had to go into work today at 7am to build up (put together) Crazy Heart. Even though it came out weeks ago, my theater just got it because of Jeff Bridges Oscar nom, we did this with Inglorious, Blindside, and Hurt Locker. It’s extremly annoying to break down a movie just to have to put it back together just weeks later.

The missing piece of the puzzle must be… you work in a movie theater?

My first assumption is that every poster is an Indian lawyer.
I assumed that your town was a small village in Karnataka that didn’t get Hollywood films. So you had to file a request at the local courthouse to get them in. It went downhill from there…

Seen everything but Hurt Locker. All the performances except George (who was once again just playing George) were good, but Jeff Bridges was great. Somehow, he made fat, drunk, sweaty and bankrupt seem sexy. If that doesn’t deserve an Oscar, what does?

Seen them all (check me out!).
I just, five minutes ago, became convinced Sandra Bullock should win, after watching an ESPN segment with the real Tuohys and Michael Oher. LeeAnn Tuohy was virtually indistinguishable from Sandy playing her.
It’s a very entertaining movie, for all who haven’t seen. Definitely Netflix it when it comes out.

I meant now, not then.
Actually, I was reading the Tory-graph’s obituary for former Labour MP Michael Foot, and (since it’s a conservative newspaper) there was actually an argument in the comments thread about whether Cromwell was a true English patriot or a villain guilty of regicide, genocide, and the death of the truly English monarchy by opening the door for foreign monarchs to be established on the English throne.
Sometimes having a long history is a bit of a burden.
Why does anyone care about the British throne anymore?

I read the Telegraph while there (though I don’t so much any more) because I already had lefty opinions, and was curious to see how the other side looked at things. It’s not very educational if everything you read just agrees with your own opinions.
Also, I may have been having hot monkey sex with one of their journalists. Perhaps.

We all got completely fucked. The division of megacorp that I work in is the only one that’s been consistently making money over the last several years, and we get sca-rewed out of raise money because of everyone else.
Add in the fact that my team had a kick-ass year and saved an $8MM / year contract, and imagine how pissed I am that the raise-o-matic application from corporate has no-one getting more than 1.9%. I was told I’d get access to additional funds to help even things up, and I just found out that the grand total to share over 30+ people is $18k. I have one developer who’s underpaid by more than that.
I’d say this is a fucking joke but it’s not funny.
Those discussions are going to suck. There is nothing worse than meeting with one of your top performers to tell them all about their $1000 raise.
Or how about when your entire department doesn’t get a raise? But hey, on the plus side we stopped firing people.
Proud to hold season tickets to the only NBA team soon to be owned by a Russian oligarch.
The ONLY reason we get raises is because we’re in the federal division, the annual rates on our contracts include an amount that’s nominally for salary increases, and if increases aren’t given, the Department of Defense Contract Audit Agency will force companies to reimburse that money to the government. The only entity less likely to get money out of corporate than line employees would be customers, so…
Especially because, in another inspired moment of sucking the life out of employees, we have a mandated curve for numerical ratings meaning that almost everyone gets a “satisfactory” rating unless they screw up.
I hope like hell that I get a decent training budget for this year or else people are going to start leaving.
Your work sounds difficult and depressing. I’m sorry. Can I offer you a glass of scotch?
Ragnarok: Great Man or Greatest Man?
It’s just work. It supports a family of 4 and our mortgage, so it’s not too bad. And it’s not like anyone gets actually hurt as a result of what we do.
But that scotch does sound good… although, since I know that the wife and kids are having pizza and (in the wife’s case) wine with some friends in DC, and I’m not likely to make it there in time, I may go home and mix myself a sazerac. Yum.

For the rest of us who don't care about the Oscars, life moves on
Protests were meh according to the Daily Cal.
Yesterday, students across California rallied in their towns and at local college campuses for the need to defend and value public education. These demonstrations made a powerful statement, manifesting the great desire and drive of students and faculty to maintain the quality of education in this state.
UC Berkeley students, workers and faculty rallied on Sproul and marched to downtown Oakland while many bused themselves to a large demonstration in Sacramento. On a campus inundated with protests since last fall, the turnout was understandably unimpressive. However, it’s unfortunate that UC Berkeley, with its activist reputation, failed to match UC Riverside’s turnout.
Compared to the estimated 5,000 demonstrators in the Sept. 24 walkout, yesterday’s protest in Berkeley peaked with only about 800 protesters. The low turnout likely stems from the fallout of last week’s Southside riot and a growing level of apathy, as protests have been happening here for months.
The outspoken presence at the rally of Marika Goodrich and Zachary Miller, who were arrested at the Southside riot, may have also contributed to students deciding not to participate. Sure, anyone is welcome to speak their views, but simply being arrested isn’t sufficient justification for these two to continually cast themselves as leaders of this movement. They personify students’ concerns that extremists have hijacked a once broad mobilization effort and hurt, rather than help, the cause.

What's with all this marching onto highways?
At UC Davis, police clashed with protesters among a crowd of about 200 people, some of whom attempted to march onto an on-ramp to the Interstate 80, according to campus spokesperson Pat Bailey.
At about 1:00 p.m., about 250 protesters blocked the main UC Davis entrance, according to Bailey.
By 3 p.m., the protesters had marched toward the I-80 entrance ramp, where officers from the California Highway Patrol, UC Davis Police Department and the Davis Police Department blocked the ramp.
Lauren Steussy-the campus editor for The California Aggie, UC Davis’ newspaper, who was present at the scene-said about 75 police officers were at the ramp at 3:30 p.m. Bailey said police fired pepper balls at the ground in an attempt to disperse the protesters.

Rallies in Sacramento
Of the more than 10,000 Californians who rallied Thursday in favor of public education across the state, about 2,000 trekked to Sacramento to make a direct appeal to lawmakers.
Students, faculty and staff from throughout Northern California gathered to rally, sing and direct slogans at lawmakers in the Capitol building. Though protests turned violent in nearby Davis, demonstrators here avoided confrontation with law enforcement, choosing instead to focus discussion on proposed solutions.
“It’s a day of incredible hope,” said Ananya Roy, a UC Berkeley professor of city and regional planning who was involved in organizing the participation of about 500 campus community members at the rally. “All of us are coming together to stand against the defunding of public education.”

What do people think that their odds of success really are? From all this standing together, I mean.
What do the people in the protest think their odds of success are? Very good.
What does everyone else think their odds of success are? Zero.
Education spending has to be cut because it is by far the largest portion of the state budget. If the Legislature didn’t cut education, then it would have to pretty much eliminate Medi-Cal, care for the elderly and disabled, and other stuff that would be protested equally loudly.
What these protesters need to do, if they are serious. is go out and fight in favor of lots of new taxes. That is the only way to avoid more education cuts.

Also marches in the Bay
More than 10,000 people marching, rallying and demonstrating for public education captivated the attention of the Bay Area Thursday, while similar efforts from California to Maine stirred national attention.
Bay Area protests shared the common chant of “No cuts, no fees, education must be free.” With the exception of the arrests of 150 Anarchists who stormed Interstate Highway 980 following a rally in Downtown Oakland, rallies in San Francisco and Berkeley remained largely without conflict.
“This has been about rallying around the cause of all schools, not just the relatively small problems at our school,” said Tyler Dickie, a senior at San Francisco State University, as she marched through the streets of San Francisco. “This puts more of a mass perspective on it.”
Many of those who took part in the demonstrations said the day was not about specifics, adding that a broad message of support for public education made the demonstration more powerful.
“For me, it is about the symbolic statement-I don’t expect anything to come out of this,” said Jackie Moore, a UC Berkeley junior, as she marched to Oakland. “We need to say we value public education.”

Nick Palmquist is full of exuberance
Today our newspapers will be dominated by the headlines that March 4 was a historic day for public education. They will say that never before have so many people from all the sectors of education mobilized across the state and country.
They are right that March 4 should be remembered for all of these things. Unfortunately, the real history-making day will have been misquoted. It is our actions and decisions on March 5 that will truly mark just how determined we are to transform our broken education system.
March 4 alone will not guarantee an end to the budget cuts. To fight them, we must start connecting public
education with other societal issues, namely the runaway spending on the wars, prisons and banks. This is not because we wish to take on all the issues plaguing our society but because these issues are intruding into our campuses and wallets, whether we want them to or not.
It costs an estimated $1 million to deploy a soldier to Afghanistan for a year and $49,000 to incarcerate a prisoner for a year in California. The state of California spends less than $10,000 to educate one K-12 student each year. The tradeoff is clear and unjustifiable.
Participating in and organizing for the March 20 anti-war protest in San Francisco would be a good start to contesting these misplaced priorities.

#4 Cal women's water polo takes on #1 USC
One of our commenters, Ed Yevelev, reports!
Prior to last weekend, USC was the only remaining top-five school yet to face the Cal women’s water polo team.
In their first chance at the Trojans during the UC Irvine Invitational, the No. 4 Bears were stymied by the nation’s hottest team in the semifinal match. On its way to capturing the tournament championship, USC broke open a 5-2 halftime score against Cal (12-4, 2-1 in the MPSF) with four third-quarter goals and prevailed 10-5.
“We were with them for a little bit, but then we let down defensively,” senior utility Stephanie Schnugg said. “I didn’t really know what to expect. It was an experience game for us, to figure out what they’re going to run.”
Saturday’s 1 p.m., rematch at McDonald’s Swim Stadium will be different, as the two teams square off in Los Angeles for an official MPSF contest.

David Seawright reports on the Cal track and field team heading to the Farm
The Cal track and field team, after a winter indoors, steps outside this weekend.
On Saturday, the No. 16 men’s team and unranked women’s team will make the trip to Palo Alto, Calif., for the Stanford Quad Meet, which is the first outdoor meet for the Bears in 2010.
Coach Tony Sandoval expects the change to the outdoor season to be fairly seamless.
“The transition won’t be that much of a difference,” Sandoval said. “Since we don’t have an indoor facility, we train outdoors year round.”
The switch to competing outdoors, however, will not be met with the familiar faces who have garnered success for the Bears so far this year.
With distance runners like senior Mark Matusak, junior Michael Coe and sophomore Deborah Maier along with heptathlete Michael Morrison automatically qualified for next week’s NCAA indoor championships in Fayetteville, Ark., this weekend’s meet serves as a week off for the regular competitors.

Cal women's tennis plays SDSU Friday, then the Furd on Saturday
Just the mention of Stanford coming to town elicits high levels of emotion and excitement from the Cal women’s tennis team.
The two squads exchanged 4-3 home victories last season, which is indicative of just how close and competitive they have become in recent years, as both Cal and Stanford have remained near the top of the women’s tennis rankings.
The Bears (8-2) will get their chance to notch another victory in the storied rivalry at home on Saturday. Matches are set to begin at noon.
“There’s no doubt that it’s a special rivalry,” coach Amanda Augustus said. “These types of games just bring out the best in everyone — they’re fun to play and coach, and playing a team of their quality makes us better.”
For the players, matching up against Stanford means one thing is guaranteed — intensity.
“It’s always very exciting to play them,” junior Marina Cossou said. “The matches are usually very close and they’re intense, but this time, we’re at home and that makes us real confident heading into it.”
However, the Bears must first get by San Diego State, which rolls into Hellman Tennis Complex on Friday afternoon. The Aztecs may not be as tough a matchup on paper as the Cardinal, but Augustus insists that her team will not look past them.

Cal women's hoops plays for tourney bid against the Furd
Prior to Saturday’s game against Stanford, Alexis Gray-Lawson, Lauren Greif and Natasha Vital will parade out onto Pete Newell Court with family and friends in tow. As it does every season, the Cal women’s basketball team will honor its three seniors before what will likely be their last game at Haas Pavilion.
But this year, it doesn’t have to be the last hurrah.
The Bears could receive their fifth consecutive tournament bid and open postseason play at home. But that depends on Cal (17-11, 11-6 in the Pac-10) making the NCAA tournament.
“I’m worried about not making the tournament,” guard Eliza Pierre said. “I want to make the tournament as a freshman. It’s the reason why I’m still playing basketball.”
Those postseason hopes weigh heavily on the Bears’ last regular-season contest against the nine-time defending conference champion Cardinal.
Email: bearsnecessities@gmail.com
Joseph Cannon talks about how great the Furd's women's team is
Yeah, it’s probably true, but come on Joseph, you’re a Bear!
To say that Cal has a chance on Saturday is probably stretching it. I’m not saying this to be mean, but even if you combine the emotional high of Senior Day, the necessity for a huge win to get into the Big Dance, and any other emotionally moving thing you can think of, the Bears just can’t hold up against Stanford.
Sadly, the Battle of the Bay won’t be as much of a battle as it has been in years past. The Cardinal is just too strong, too deep, and too good. On the first trip through, it wasn’t close, with Stanford settling for a below-average 21-point victory.
This isn’t to say that the Bears are a bad team. They’re far from bad. It’s just that the Cardinal are ready to compete for a national title, while the baby Bears are still growing up. Perhaps someday-my guess is in two or three years-Joanne Boyle’s decision to start four freshmen this season will pay monstrous dividends.

Reddit question of the day: Who likes their coffee black?
I prefer it dark and hot, like my women, how about you?
Email: bearsnecessities@gmail.com
Black. I can understand putting a little cream in diner coffee, but destroying the subtleties of a single-brew (Clover, Melitta, French press) Ethiopian Sidamo or Panamanian Geisha is a crime against humanity.
By the way, a lot of coffee-related comments on this board tend to be of the type that coffee’s single purpose is as a caffeine source, and therefore that comments such as the above are pointless. I’ll point out the analogy to wine, where boxed wine is for getting drunk but fine wine is for the taste as well.

It’s possible that coffee enthusiasts are tarred by association with people who drone on about it all the time. I know I get incredibly bored with my local peers’ obsession with wine (must have a wine refrigerator, talk about terroire, go to tastings, etc.) – as long as it’s a half-decent red that didn’t cost a lot and doesn’t burn the way down, get on and drink it, and shut up.

At any other time, though, black coffee is great.
Also, this quote is money:
If, for example, I asked all of you in this room what you want in a coffee, you know what you’d say? Every one of you would say ‘I want a dark, rich, hearty roast’ – that’s what people always say when you ask what they want in a coffee. [..]

Been that way since I started drinking the coffee my dad made in the mornings in high school. I still really have a soft spot for Sumatra, since that’s what he always made. Nope, atheist. I also very rarely drink any booze. For coffee, I always found the smell disgusting, so I never bothered. Plus I had friends who used tons of money to buy coffee every day and I figured there was other stuff I’d rather save my money for. For booze, I just never acquired the taste for it, which makes me feel like quite a weirdo most of the time. But I save even more money!

Cugel's Tips for Fine Living
At the risk of annoying DC Trojan, please submit for your approval a fine Scotch Whisky: The Balvenie 15 year Single Barrel. Now there are better whiskies, and there are definitely more expensive whiskies, but in Cugel’s estimation, there are no better whiskies in this price range.
Sure, it might be $55 per bottle, but after a hard day’s work, a man deserves a quality beverage to conclude the evening (and woman does too, all the more so since she has to work hard and still look fabulous while doing so). This is a rich and complex malt, with a long finish. Also, since it is from a single barrel, if you keep on trying it, you will notice marked variations in the whisky from different barrels.

Men's swimming doing well at Pac-10 championships
More individual titles
LONG BEACH, CALIF. – The No. 4-ranked University of California men’s swimming team continued its assault on a 2010 Pac-10 swimming championship as the Golden Bears won two individual events Thursday (March 4) at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach. Junior Nathan Adrian successfully defended his 2009 title in the 50 free with a time of 19.20, while sophomore Martin Liivamagi captured his first conference title by winning the 200 IM in a career-best and NCAA automatic qualifying 1:43.73.
Adrian, who was last year’s NCAA champion in the 50 free as well, currently has the nation’s top time in that event with a mark of 19.08. He was he 2009 Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year after winning the 50, 100 and 200 free at the conference meet. Last season Liivamagi’s teammate and fellow Estonian, Martti Aljand, was the Pac-10 champion in the 200 IM with a time of 1:43.59.
In the final race Thursday, the Cal 200 free relay of juniors Graeme Moore, Josh Daniels, Guy Barnea and Adrian swam a time of 1:17.45 (NCAA automatic qualifying), narrowly being edged out by Stanford’s 1:17.32.
After six events Cal sits in second place at the Pac-10 meet, trailing the Cardinal, 307-225. The Bears are trying to snap Stanford’s streak of 28 straight conference titles. The last school to win a Pac-10 title other than Stanford was Cal in 1980 and 1981.

Jahvid Best to be honored at women's basketball game
Something called the CPFA Elite Performance trophy
BERKELEY – Former Cal tailback Jahvid Best will be honored by the College Football Performance Awards organization with the 2009 Elite Running Back Trophy at an on-court ceremony during halftime of the Cal-Stanford women’s basketball game at Haas Pavilion this Saturday, Mar. 6. Tipoff for the “Battle of the Bay” contest is 12:30 p.m. PT.
The award recognizes Best as the top performer at the running back position based upon the 21 games in which he participated over the past two seasons. Best was responsible for 32 total offensive touchdowns in those games, and he concluded his career at Cal as the NCAA’s active leader in rushing yards per carry (7.33). No other active running back in the Football Bowl Subdivision of college football averages more than 7.0 yards per carry (with a minimum of 300 carries).
The goal of the College Football Performance Awards is to provide the most scientifically rigorous conferments in college football. CFPA recipients are selected based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams. As prominent scholars from a wide variety of disciplines note, CFPA eliminates the politics and biases that vitiate balloting-based awards. Furthermore, CFPA is the only awards organization to receive praise from both Republican and Democratic White House officials for promoting objectivity and fairness in college football.

BERKELEY – Former California stars Natalie Coughlin, Dana Vollmer and Madison Kennedy will swim in the Austin Grand Prix from today, Thursday, March 4, through Saturday, March 6, at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas. This is the first competitive meet that Coughlin will swim in since the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
The trio will swim for California Aquatics.
Coughlin earned a U.S. women’s record six medals in Beijing and has 11 Olympic medals overall, including the five she claimed in Athens in 2004. A three-time NCAA and Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year (2001-03), Vollmer is slated to swim in the 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly in Austin. Vollmer, the 2009 NCAA and Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year, is scheduled to compete in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles as well as the 100 and 200 butterflies, while Kennedy is scheduled to swim in the 50, 100 and 200 frees this week.
Vollmer combined with Kennedy, 100-yard butterfly national champion Amanda Sims and the rest of the Golden Bears team to win their first NCAA and Pac-10 team championships in 2009. Also the Honda Award winner for swimming that year, Vollmer won the 100 and 200 frees and, along with Kennedy, swam on the winning 400- and 800-free relays at NCAAs in 2009.

Last night in Pac-10 men's hoops...
ASU beat USC; Arizona beat Ucla; OSU beat WSU; UW beat UO
PAC-10 TOURNAMENT SEEDINGS/MATCHUPS
We don’t have all the matchups, but here’s what we do know (and, remember, USC is ineligible and not part of the equation):
– No. 1 seed Cal will play Thursday against the winner of the Wednesday night game between Nos. 8 & 9. That still could be any of three teams: Stanford, Oregon or Washington State.
– Arizona State will be the No. 2 seed and play No. 7. Washington is slotted as the No. 3 seed and will play No. 6.
–If Cal beats Stanford on Saturday, the Cardinal will fall to 7-11 and into a tie for the No. 7-8 spots with the winner of Saturday’s game between WSU and Oregon. The loser of that game is No. 9. Stanford swept Oregon and owns that tiebreaker, so if Oregon beats WSU, Stanford is the No. 7 seed and avoids playing Wednesday night. Stanford and WSU split their games, and both went 0-2 against Cal, ASU, UW and UCLA, so that doesn’t settle the tie. But WSU has the tiebreaker edge over Stanford against either Arizona or USC, so if WSU beats Oregon, the Cougars are No. 7 and Stanford falls to No. 8 and would play Oregon on Wednesday night . . . unless Stanford beats Cal.

Mychal was hurting bad last year and when he got injured, the LBs took a big hit. I still think the LBs were the weakest link on D in 2009. They have potential to be really good this year. There’s a lot of talent there but we’re going to need 3 or 4 more guys to step up to solidify the rotation. Kendricks and Mohamed are 2 starters. Who else will step up from the incoming frosh and returning players?
My guess is we’ll see a little of Holt and Price mixed in with Martin, maybe guys like Price or Meadows will get a shot? Other than Martin, I’m not sure if anyone else from the rookie class will play much this year.
Email: bearsnecessities@gmail.com
by Avinash Kunnath on Mar 5, 2010 8:18 AM PST up reply actions
Since they’re JC guys, I think Price and Meadows are really expected to be part of the rotation. Whiteside might have the skills to play, but the foggy memory says that he might want to redshirt…?
Off the top of my head, the available LBers this year are:
Fanua
Meadows
Price
Little
Mullins
Mohamed
Kendricks
Browner
Aigamaua
Hurrell
Johnson
Holt
Martin
Whiteside
Wilkerson
Going into Spring ball, based on last year’s depth chart that the following guys will be in the mix immediately: Holt, Meadows, Johnson, Browner after the clear cut starters in Mohamed and Kendricks. I think Price won’t be in the rotation unless he has developed some new pass rushing moves. Little is the other LB who didn’t just see garbage time last year and Fanua was a redshirt frosh. IMO, Martin will definitely play, I’m unsure of Whiteside, and Wilkerson will likely blueshirt
I couple of things I hope happen:
1) Guys get assigned to a position and are given the reps to learn it well. I think we were hurt a lot by musical chairs last year. Pretty ridiculous to still be switching Mo and Kendricks insides/outside a few games into the regular season.
2) Schemes are designed to let guys play fast. I think the inexperience + having too much to think about made guys a few steps slow. OSU’s approach of having fewer schemes but mastering them really lets their guys fly to the ball.
The musical chairs happened because Gregory was trying to find a guy who could play the Rush Backer spot. I’m not talking about just being able to rush the passer, but an every down LB who could handle the weakside responsibilities in run defense and coverage as well. Nobody stood out like Follett, and the one guy who was the “best” at it got injured (Kendricks). I’m not trying to take away anything from Kendricks because it’s tough playing while injured, but he also struggled getting consistent pressure. If Kendricks stayed healthy last year, I have a feeling things would have been a little bit different. Trust me on this, the coaches weren’t happy with having to move guys around well into the season and axing part of the defensive playbook because we simply couldn’t use it. I definitely do agree that players need to get reps at their position so they can get it down.
Most Cal fans have surmised that our D schemes we re too simple because of the lack of the pass rush. Inexperience and the musical chairs were big factors last year, but I think there’s an additional issue that I won’t get into now.

More football news and notes
•Charles Satchell has moved from wide receiver to safety. Tedford said it was Satchell’s decision, that he played on both sides of the ball in high school and defense is where his true passion was.
•Wide receiver Michael Calvin has undergone yet another surgery. He had his right knee scoped for the second time a few weeks ago but is expected to be ready for the start of spring. Calvin was scoped before last season as well, which came on the heels of ACL surgery the previous fall.
•Tedford said Donovan Edwards will likely begin spring practice at left tackle and Mitchell Schwartz will remain at right tackle. He said Chris Guarnero and Dominic Galas will see time at both center and guard.

I think we should start a pool where everyone chips in $20. “Guess how many surguries Michael Calvin will have before he finishes his Cal career”.

Former Cal DE Tully Banta-Cain re-signs with Patriots
The three-year, $13.5 million contract could increase in total value to $18 million if Banta-Cain reaches certain incentives, according to a source. The deal includes a $6 million signing bonus and a $1 million base salary in 2010, meaning that Banta-Cain will earn $7 million this season.
The new contract represents a healthy raise for Banta-Cain, who signed a one-year deal for the veteran minimum last season and led the Patriots with 10 sacks in 2009.
Banta-Cain played in all 16 games last season. Initially projected as a sub rusher, he emerged as a contributor on early downs as well, playing in 66 percent of the defensive snaps.

Cromartie’s really not that good. I mean, i know he had that great game against Peyton Manning 2.5 years ago, but he’s horrible at run support and is slightly above average at best defending the pass.
He’s really fallen off since his Pro Bowl year. To me this sounds a lot like the hoopla that surrounded the Jets when they got Lito Sheppard, who was also a two time Pro Bowler. It’s not like going to the Jets resurrected his career either.
Proud to hold season tickets to the only NBA team soon to be owned by a Russian oligarch.

Next time you're in SF, you can try the Mc10:35

I heard about this from a cashier at one of the local McDonald’s. He said it’s getting kind of a cult following in San Francisco.
1. Go to McD’s right when they are transitioning from breakfast to lunch.
2. Order one of the remaining Egg McMuffins from the breakfast menu and also order a McDouble since the lunch menu is now open.
3. Take the egg and Canadian bacon from the Egg McMuffin and put it on the McDouble.
The guy at the register said people call it a Mc10:35 because that’s pretty much the only time you can pull this off.

JJ Arrington's a Bronco. Again.
Released last summer by the Broncos before he ever played a snap, Denver picked running back J.J. Arrington back up Thursday evening on a one-year contract. (Fox 31 in Denver first had the news.)
The third-down back underwent microfracture surgery last May after failing a physical with Denver. He’s got an uphill battle to relevance with Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter ahead of him on the Broncos depth chart.

This sort of thing would work really well for Family Guy. Should’ve been the Stewie and Brian show a long time ago.

they do those stewie-brian features from time to time that usually work out well. i dislike greatly seth mcfarlane’s constant assertion that gene kelly/frank sinatra big band crap is the only music worth hearing, though. his target audience does not share that viewpoint
Remember, the enemy's end zone is DOWN!
Brian is the only funny character on that show, probably because he’s the only one with a consistent characterization. Stewie, sadly, is no longer funny.
Imagine if someone watched the most recent season with no knowledge of what came before. You’d tell them, “Stewie used to be an evil genius and hated his parents.” Their response would be, “You mean the baby that’s gay for some reason?”

character development is not a bad thing, though. characters that grow and change are much more interesting, in my opinion.
Remember, the enemy's end zone is DOWN!
I agree that character development is good. I don’t think Family Guy does that. The characters change randomly and for no reason other than to set up whatever random joke they have. One minute Peter has an IQ that qualifies him as mentally handicapped. The next minute he’s making an astute pop culture reference in complex sentences.
Family Guy is basically Robot Chicken, except Robot Chicken works because it has no plot. The characterizations and attempts at plot on Family Guy just get in the way of the weird and random jokes the writers want to make.

That would be the best spinoff ever, you know except the part about Pam dying, but I would quickly recover from that

So, is every anti-gay Republican a closeted homosexual?
Republican state Sen. Roy Ashburn of Bakersfield has taken leave from his elected position until at least Monday, after a drunk-driving arrest here started a firestorm over his sexual orientation.
Ashburn, 55, has served in the Legislature since 1996 and consistently has voted against bills that would expand legal protections for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Californians. He is among those with the staunchest records against those issues. Ashburn is single and has four children.
Ashburn was arrested and booked into Sacramento County jail for driving under the influence of alcohol just after 2 a.m. Wednesday and a local television station cited unnamed sources in reporting that Ashburn had spent the evening at Faces, a large gay dance club a few blocks from where police stopped him. Ashburn was driving his state-issued vehicle.

Go Murray St.!
The Racers, who Cal beat by 5 at the beginning of the season, move to 29-4 on the season and into the OVC Championship game with a win over Eastern Illinois. I really hope the Racers win the OVC tourney, if only so we can say that Cal beat a team with 30 regular season wins.

Scary moment
Watching the Pistons/Cavs game . . .Rodney Stuckey just had a seizure and collapsed – was sent to the hospital
Yikes, hope he's ok
…and he’s on my collapsing fantasy team. Awesome.

Oh man. I didn’t even realize the unintentional joke. Tasteless. Apologies.
Stuckey has apparently stabilized though. Sounds like everything should be ok!
