DBD 3.23.10 CGB Research Results!

Thanks to the 52 people who filled out last week's form. If you think these results had anything to do with yesterday's decision...it really didn't.  This was mostly for fun and for me to figure out what I should post about more in the future. Also, to find out whether Hydrotech really likes me (Nope. He's all for CALumbus Bear. Bromance crushed).

Here are the results. Keep in mind these are mostly DBD regulars and this was kept in mind when tabulating the results. You are our most loyal members and we will always have a special place in our heart for all of you. Where's the part where all the cholesterol gathers?

Does the DBD need improving? If yes, what kind of improvements could be used?

Needs more inanity!
Just kidding.  Seriously, I do think there needs to be more consistency in the links to Cal sports.  We do a good job of linking to the calbears.com stories and occasionally the Daily Cal stories, but it would be nice to link to Cal content from the Bay Area newspapers.  The DBD could be a nice one stop shop for seeing what all the Cal beat writers have written.
I don't think so. I haven't done a comprehensive survey of all SBN college football blogs, but it's unlikely that there's anything like them elsewhere, and it's driven by the community.
TwistNHook's DBDs blow goats.
Maybe a tighter rein (by 2%) on some of the more contentious discussions.
I like it the way it is
If there were a way to organize the links better, e.g., by including all comment-based links into the main page, the DBD would be easier to keep up with.

smaller image posts (goes for front page stories even more)

No, it's totally awesome
Fire Hydrotech.
I can't think of any good improvements, seems to be working fine to me.

No.
I no longer go to the DBD on a daily basis. It is too unwieldily. If I do not get involved until later in the day, I just avoid it since by then it is usually 500+ comments deep and pointless to comment on a conversation that ended hours ago.

So, with that said, I am not sure how to improve DBD. I know a lot of people really enjoy it, but perhaps this will tell you otherwise, I do not know. It sometimes feels like a party that I was not invited to but I am not sure you can change that, at this point.
I think the DBD is decent enough as is.  I enjoy the fact the structure is loose, therefore the DBD evolves and changes with the day.

Naw it's good the way it is...

A little more moderation, especially the sex-related stuff.  I know I've said my fair share of outlandish shit in the DBDs, but I'd rather see interviews with Tedford and player access than a lot of the stuff in the DBD's. If the DBD content is what's preventing you guys from AD access then forget it...there are more important things to say than PS (namely, CY).  If you have to make arbitrary decisions as to what to delete then...who gives a fuck? This is a blog, not a 9th-century era pre-British-royalty autonomous anarcho-syndicalist commune with a rotating executive officer of the week.  Please feel free to post these thoughts.
LESS FUCKING POLITICS. GODDAMMIT RISHI AND HOLMOPHOBE!
fewer carp/fire starkey bait pictures posted though, come on. there's enough porn on the internet and, if i get a job and have the opportunity to read cgb at work, i'd rather not have someone question what i'm reading if there's a scantily-clad cheerleader there. the NSFW link-to-the-picture works perfectly, why do people still insist on posting ugly-ass pac-10 cheerleaders or female athletes? just post the link, everyone will be happy. that's about all the censorship i approve of, only because it is fire-worthy at a job. trolling is lame but the more things that are shut out from the DBD the more it becomes nestor's parents' basement.
I think the DBD is fine as is. I look at it as a place to have conversations with other Cal fans, I don't think it needs to be moderated or adjusted.
NOTE: This is not improvements, but i didnt see comments.

I just don't feel like a lot of the DBD's are what I want to read. Some of them I do, but I really only want Cal sports stories, and the best ones make their way onto the front page.
Everything is perfect.

Hell no.
none

I love the inanity that tis the DBD.  I used to be a lurker but eventually all the hilarity drew me out.  Keep it the way it is!

No.

The DBD is perfect.  DON'T FUCK IT UP
hmmm.....always need improving.

what kind? no f*n idea.
More Simpsons references!
Moderation?  What moderation?

We're good.
More Cal sports or anything to do with the university/Berkeley.

Not really.
No, I feel the DBDs serve their purpose well
I hadn't given it much thought. I think they're fairly welcoming, if entirely overwhelming for someone new who isn't a complete ass.
eh... it seems alright to me, it really depends on what purpose the DBD is supposed to have.  Right now, it is mostly people shooting the shit.
No, it ain't broke.

The ambiance is fine, but the decor is lacking.

Is there really this much controversy on the DBD's? I love them and all the inane conversations that take place in the comments section. We came up with a system for letting people know when a comment has actual Cal or sports-related content and it seems to work. It's a welcoming community, which is rare on the interwebz. Don't change a thing.
I don't know offhand.  And I don't know if it's *possible* to control it, so...what do you do?
clean up the trash; rude crude is not needed.
cover more of Cal sports oftener;
good chance after March Madness

Please keep the politics off CGB. I joined the site because I want to talk about Cal sports, not off-topic stuff. Especially politics. I don't want to know about anyone's political views. This is why I won't post in the DBDs. I love CGB when it's about sports.

My favorite part of the DBD is...

Football season, where there's a great mix of Cal talk and inanity.  Outside of football season, we seem to be tilted more toward inanity in the DBD.
Oh the inanity.
Any post in wihch my name is mentioned.
making fun of twist.
Inanity, random discussions, ongoing memes, the sense of community
the commenting.  For every hundred medicore one, there'll be a really entertaining one.

Everything!
Being able to say "Fire Hydrotech"
creative new ways to introduce the dbd

Casual atmosphere.  Helps bring the community together with a less formal undertone.
Although I usually skim to the Cal-related material, the inanity can be hilarious.
In order from most appreciated to mildly appreciated I like:
1)  Weird & interesting links to various articles on a wide-range of subjects.  For example, the link to the Top 6 Insane Fan Theories that Make Movies Better, or today's Cracked Link regarding happiness.
2)  a consolidated point to read Cal-related content
3)  Humourous photoshops and comments regarding the Pac-10.
4)  Various comments on news from the sports world
5)  Being able to ask various off-topic questions, knowing someone somewhere will be able to answer it (say, best places to snowboard)
6)  Reading the headlines of the non-revenue sports activity for Cal
7)  Potential interesting discussions regarding something I had never considered (Roman battle stratgies)
inanity! can be very entertaining
Pictures!

Overall format and freedom to discuss any topic or talk shit in a light hearted manner.

Comments with links to random news stories (Sports-related or not) I would not have seen otherwise

Updates on non-revenue cal sports
Links to Cal stories/breaking news
General inanity
laughing at the general inanity and hilarious come-backs
learning an occasional tidbit about a variety of subjects (from chemistry to history to economics to law .... a veritable plethora of subjects really)
The wacky, non-inappropriate conversations.
The humor and the serious discussions.
cal football-related and basketball-related stories. hilarious photoshops. usage of memes. pop-culture references, and good jokes.
The ability to have multiple conversations on a variety of topics ranging from pure nonsense to cal sports to life advice.
The recruiting updates (I know I'm pathetic for following recruiting).
The intelligence and wit of the commenters.
all the gossip i need in one place
The tangents. They get into a lot of interesting stuff that people know a lot about, and I learn something new a few times a week. Love that.
TwistNHook
Almost everything! I like the daily general news bits and stuff, as well as the general chatter.
The inanity!  Oh the inanity!

The snark, wit, and breadth of knowledge of the commenters.
The inanity (seriously). Also, the quantity.
... the inanity (p.s. those ellipses were NOT meant to imply that I like Rishi's gross overuse of ellipses, they were merely continuing the lead in to this answer)
the generally solid effort everyone puts into having full discusion of whatever the topic turns out to be in the comments from financial collapse to PSoCY
Football and basketball news, especially recruiting news when it is available.
Local happenings/ bay area news is nice when posters bring it up.
At almost any time of the day, I can log on and read something that makes me smile or laugh.  And, there's an outlet for me to write things that I could never in a million years actually say at work.
The information of other sports besides football and basketball.

when people post funny things or have really intelligent insights about stuff.
Usual everyday banter with fellow CGBers in the comments
Advice from random people online.
Silly conversations people have about silly things.
The balance between inanity, news related to Cal as a university, and Cal sports news.
Inanity. And quantity.

The fact that fans from other schools come to hang out there and participate in a fun way.
When I actually look, there's always a gem or two of a comment thread hiding in there.
quick prompt info and good analysis
The random stuff that ends up in them, as well as the collective sense of humor of the CGB commenting populace.

My least favorite part of the DBD is...

I never like it when we have the political discussion.  I hate politics in real life; I don't like seeing it in a place where I go for entertainment.
Recurring slapfights.
When there isn't enough of The Rishi Hour
sleeping through most of it.
Nothing.  It is what it is and is awesome.
the circle jerks.  You know who you are.

abortion/political debates not directly related to UC (things like funding/tuition/academia, or construction/development/treesitting are fine)

Nothing!
That Hydrotech doesn't get fired.
inanity that goes far to the right (jokes that play off jokes that play off jokes that play off jokes....). Although if I'm not interested I skip by.

Nothing really.
The fanpost itself. I rarely read it, if ever.
The Political debates, I understand people have their own views, and should comment on them.  However, the long drawn out arguments that consist of over 15 comments are a bit bothersome.
while it's great that the regular posters have developed such a strong sense of community, the camaraderie / "members only" vibe of insiders' running jokes has changed the way I view the DBD. "cal sports blog" is no longer the first description to comes to mind when it to CGB, and it probably should be.
Comments with no pictures... And discussions on Lost...
rehashing of predictable responses - TWSS, PSoCY, Twist's wedding night

(I do have to say that they can be funny for a while - e.g. ALamaaar, etc.)

cat fights between two commenters who are in a pissy mood (this usually includes you 33SS)

How Danzig is no longer a part of it.  TAKE OFF THE TIN FOIL HAT DUDE, THE CHINESE CAN'T HACK INTO OUR BRAINS...yet.
POLITICS.
politics, anything since1997 or rishi say 'to' the other, anything rishi says, calbear81's dismissal of anything not from the mesozoic era. i'm sure it will only be a matter of time before these things become endearing, right?
The complains about it's organization.

Everything is great.
Indian fights, or what is the best place to get Indian food, or which Bollywood actress is best, or which club is best to pick up Indian ladies.

Yeah, just Rishi.

No really, its all good, it is what it is supposed to be, the Indian fights get tiring, but that is what z is for.
The political fighting. And a couple of commenters.
TwistNHook
When people turn it into a conversation pit for drama and arguments. Can't you just take it to e-mail or something so you don't stink it up for the rest of us who don't give a shit?
Flame wars make baby Jesus cry :(

Sometimes it devolves into non-joking personal attacks, and sometimes people are a little cliquish, but nothing really bothers me per se.
Political and/or religious pissing matches.
When people debate with HUGE comments.  Snore fest.  Z city.
whiney posts.

It's hard to keep track sometimes of the different discussions all over the place.

And, I'm reaaaally unproductive when I allow myself to get sucked in.
Some of the political talk.

when arguments get out of control
Any mention of Stanfurd.

Or red stuff.
Political slapfights or having multiple people ganging up on one person and their view, each presenting a different viewpoint and angle to the argument, leading to more slapfights. Only really a problem when it gets out of hand and when people aren't playing nice.
Political flame wars.  I really like political discussions, but when it become "U suck" "No U" "Ur mom's a whore" it's stupid.  Also, when people get way too personally offended by shit in the DBD.
The lack of recipes.
POLITICAL FIIIIIIGHTS
Any time Twist says anything.

Getting there late and having to punish my Z key looking for good stuff.
Some of the guys, well, get a bit guyish, which is slightly uncomfortable given that I'm, well, not a dude.  But you know, such is the lot of girls who like sports. ;)
comments that are way out of line.

There is often good info in comments. Sometimes it is just chatter, which is fine too. But sometimes one needs to take a bath after reading some of them. yeech.
This is a widely read public forum, take the garbage elsewhere...or folks will stop reading.
Sometimes it's hard to see comments for an original post if one exchange has gone on forever, but I think that has more to do with SB Nation.

If you were in charge of CGB, would you maintain the DBD the way it is? How would you change it?

I think it's fine.  Even though I like (and make light of) carp's NSFW links, I like the recent trend I've noticed in mods removing photos from the DBD that might not be NSFW but are close.
I'd pretty much leave it as is.
Needs more inanity.

Don't change it
Another point would be that I'd make it more inclusive somehow, but really this is more a reflection of a small audience than anything else.  Even the DLDs at much larger sites, e.g. AN, have smaller comment numbers.

I think it's a good idea, and keeps other posts much more on point than they would be otherwise.  At a certain other SB Nation board, the posters tend to randomly select posts all over to use for conversation/OT discussion, and it really junks up the threads.  Your DBD is a smart way to handle this.

I would not change it. Why change perfection?
Fire Hydrotech
Keep it, not everything in it has to interest me, but it has a purpose.

It's effective the way it is.
Is this not merely a restatement of the first question?

The DBD is so popular, I am not sure it would be wise to change it. The DBD has created the community that has made CGB such a fantastic site. My problem of not bothering if I do not check it out until later in the day really is not a problem.
I would maintain how it is.

Keep it the way it is, no need to moderate it any further or any less. Its moderated enough to be safe to view at work, while risque enough to keep everyone's interest...
I have all but stopped visiting BI because of the bitching at Tedford and one another - unless MoragaBear posts

I would delete offensive and inappropriate things as determined by me, arbitrarily.  Seriously.
I'd keep it exactly the same way.
let it ride. fewer carp/fire starkey bait pictures posted though, come on. there's enough porn on the internet and, if i get a job and have the opportunity to read cgb at work, i'd rather not have someone question what i'm reading if there's a scantily-clad cheerleader there. the NSFW link-to-the-picture works perfectly, why do people still insist on posting ugly-ass pac-10 cheerleaders or female athletes? just post the link, everyone will be happy. that's about all the censorship i approve of, only because it is fire-worthy at a job. trolling is lame but the more things that are shut out from the DBD the more it becomes nestor's parents' basement.
I'd keep it the way it is, reader freedom is important to a healthy community.

I would change nothing.
maintain!
Keep it the way it is.
do not change a thing
Ban asshats more frequently, but that's more of a problem for gameday threads rather than the DBDs.
I would keep it the way it is.  It is exactly what it purports to be and that is rare indeed.

It's just fine, and doesn't need to be actively changed.
Leave it, it's the secondary reason I come to the site, behind recruiting information.
No change, it is a perfect balance.  Sometimes too boring, sometimes too much flaming/trolling, but all in all it is the best thing about this site.

Sure, it's fine.
Sure.  I think they're working fine with the current community.

Where you need to be careful is if you get an element who moves in that poisons the well and makes it an unpleasant experience for other posters.

I prefer to spend time at CGB because it's fun - sort of the anti-Bear Insider.
See Does the DBD need improving? If yes, what kind of improvements could be used?

I'm content with the way it is i suppose
i do feel bad when you folks have tons of stuff to do and still have to put up the dbd.
If I were in charge, quality might drop off exponentially, so I'll leave that to the experts.
I hope to never be in charge of CGB. Honestly, the DBD the way it is is generated by the people who comment, so the only way you'll really change the DBD is by getting those people to change or by limiting their influence.
It seems fine.  You can just z past if you don't like something.
I would add a weekly feature where Twist gives a detailed rundown of the happenings in the world of chick tv.
Maybe have some way for people to sign up to write DBDs. It could make it easier for people to share something or to present a topic for discussion.
I would definitely try to remove all Cal content. All the comments at the top create an unnecessary scrolling problem. I mean come on, who cares about things like gymnastics?
No. I feel like it is a way for people of the CGB community to unwind and talk about whatever happens to be the topic of the day. This makes the blog unique and special. Don't change it.
The way it is.
I don't know.  As I said, some threads spin a bit close to uncomfortable, but there's a lot of good threads as well.  I'll occasionally comment in there (as I'll occasionally comment elsewhere on the site) but sometimes the freewheeling nature scares me a bit.  But some of that is my own issues.

Fine the way it is. It keeps other threads on topic but allows for random stuff which is what makes the internet not suck.
Make it a place where people talk about general sports news. Pro leagues, other college teams, that sort of thing. Especially for conversation with non-Cal fans.

I'm going to save the favorite/non-favorite commenters stuff for later. Lord knows we need all the posts we need this offseason!
