"Cal starting forward Omondi Amoke has been suspended indefinitely for violation of undisclosed team rules and is not expected to play Friday..."

Gotta consider this a dealbreaker for Cal. No way we have the depth now to defend Louisville's threats inside with only Zhang and Sanders-Frison.

Amoke

What the heck, man? I don’t know if we can win without him. As you pointed out, we need him inside. I guess I hope Louisville plays four guards most of time.

That'll show Chip Kelly how it is done!

On a serious note, this is unfortunate for several reasons:

1. key player for the gave against the ’ville, especially for cleaning the glass (remember Pat Riley and “no boards, no rings”?). Expert commentators say winning the rebound battle is key for this game.

2. if Cal advances, bodies to pay minutes will be critical.

3. Amoke is needed next year, and a more mature Amoke at that – one who has his head in the game to match his physical tools, and somebody who works hard this summer to improve his game.

So incredibly....

disappointing. The lone underclassmen starting at the end of the season when we were hitting our stride goes and sh*ts the bed. If I’m a senior, I’m livid with him.

by CalBeer on Mar 17, 2010 12:09 PM PDT reply actions

omg.

Well, he didn’t play all that great vs. ucla…

But Sanders-Frison and Max both love to foul, so this might get real ugly real fast…

Maybe this still applies

Pat Forde’s best and worse case scenario for Cal

California (8)

Best Case: Playing with fury for a scorned league, the Golden Bears come out flying. Jerome Randle is bombing from deep, Patrick Christopher is operating smoothly from the wings and Cal beats Louisville. Next, Duke transfer Jamal Boykin goes off on his old team for 20 points and 15 rebounds in leading a Cal upset of the Blue Devils. Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott rushes the floor and jumps on the Golden Bears’ dogpile at midcourt. Cal doesn’t stop until Baylor beats it in the regional final, its best showing in 50 years. And last anyone checked, Stanford still stunk.

Worst Case: Fury for a scorned league is nice, but what if the league deserved to be scorned? Beaten up inside by Louisville, Cal is quickly dismissed in the first round while Washington also is eliminated in its first game. The Pac-10 commissioner begs UCLA to get good again in a hurry. The Golden Bears complete a season of across-the-board underachievement in football and men’s basketball.

PANIC

It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.

by BeastMode on Mar 17, 2010 12:33 PM PDT reply actions

No need to panic

We have a plan:

1. Suspend Amoki
2. Play Randle, Christopher, and Robertson 40 minutes each
3. ???
4. Profit!

I don’t think that’s a very effective plan.

I’m also pretty worried about next year without him.

He left out the part...

…under 3.???

Where Jorge and Max combined into one Zhanguitieurezz! A massive 8 foot inside presence of 4 arms and 8 legs shot blocking mass of indestructible and unmoving force!

how can you joke at a time like this?

by concordtom on Mar 17, 2010 1:19 PM PDT up reply actions

shrug

When I saw the “Breaking News” (usually reserved for things like earthquakes, disasters, etc) CAL STARTER suspended, I thought, “OMG, not randle!!! not PC!! not THEO!! BOYKIN say it isn’t soo!!”

So it’s Omoke. Yes, it’s not good. But realistically our chances of getting past Duke were slim anyways. Still need outstanding performances from our seniors to get past round 1 anyways. Maybe this will allow Max some more PT? He could possibly scare the other team with his massive size (and eyebrows) for a bout 1/2 a second? Enough for JR to hit a 3?

by DavidsonBear on Mar 17, 2010 1:26 PM PDT up reply actions

okay, I will now dismiss you and your comments.
Duke? We are playing Louisville first, and that’s where everyone’s focus should be. And Amoke was a starter and a very important player. But you miss all those points, so I won’t bother concerning myself with anything you say next.

I am not blase about this news. It’s a huge blow. And for four seniors to end their season this way (if indeed we lose) is a big shame.

Unfortunately losing Amoke to suspension means we lose a whole lotta athleticism on D. The bright side is that if MSF/Zhang starts then at least boykin & theo won’t be playing out of position.

No way will we win now

Someone check the betting line. What was it before, and what will it be before tipoff time. This will not only hurt the kids on the court, but their entire morale will be sinking to a low. I simply can’t believe this. It is stunning.
And, further, you think Pitino would suspend his player for a similar offense, depending on what we see that it was.
Amoke just made national news. Can’t believe it.
First he dunks the ball out of the rim (costing them the game – okay, that’s a joke), and now this (not a joke).

I don’t buy this part. It’s just as likely, if not more so, that the 4 seniors circle wagons and take this team on their shoulders more than ever before. Will that lead is to victory? Maybe, maybe not. I think Amoke would have been valuable in this match up. We could’ve used him. But I just don’t see this team folding up its tent just because Amoke’s out.

I envision Randle jacking up as many long bombs as he can, wanting to stay out of foul trouble like against UW, wanting to be an offensive hero. Last game of career – score as many points as you can and extend your record.
I see us going out with a blaze of glory. Little commitment to defense. Just outscore them.
Can we last that long? We have 5 players, plus Max and MSF for beef and fouls to slow them down. Louisville will rotate in 10 players. If Randle et al are not completely exhausted by the end…..

So annoying and predictable

Damn it’s difficult to be a Cal fan sometimes. He’s our most replaceable starter but this still hurts big time. Besides Christopher, who is hurting, Amoke is our best athlete and we could have used him for defense, offensive rebounding and another five fouls. Arrrgh.

So any word on what Amoke might’ve done to merit this?

someone said it was “Masoli bad”, and then that was debated, during which someone else said the person who said that must have good sources (as if they agreed with the severity based on knowledge of the situation) and then people started talking about being kicked off the team (which would be complete speculation). Someone else wrote that they are a student and had a big party before the ASU game, and said that Amoke was there drinking and that they figured something like this was bound to happen. I’m only reporting blurbs of what people “wrote” on Bear Insider. I have no idea if those sources mean ANYTHING at all.

*****HAVE TENTATIVE INFO ON WHAT HAPPENED******

According to my “source” (man I sound so official), Amoke stole a bunch of shit (such as laptops, cell phones, ipods). Looks like it was “Masoli Bad”

are you a student? Let’s try and get some flavor behind this “source” – everyone has to be buzzing about it now…
