Cal Football Spring Practice kicks off; Akili Smith hired as graduate assistant
Not many updates that will make you go whoa. If you want to know who's getting first-team reps though, this is where you should go.
The only interesting piece of news is the hiring of Akili Smith as a graduate assistant. Smith of course is one of the many Tedford QBs groomed for the NFL back from his days in Oregon. In his post-pro days, he was working as a QB coach for free down at Grossmont College in San Diego.

Wait, what
Akili Smith? I suppose if you can’t get Trent Dilfer…
Proud to hold season tickets to the only NBA team soon to be owned by a Russian oligarch.
He hit the jackpot already. Bank some coin for saying things anybody can say for 15 minutes a weekday. BTW, I’m on ESPN boycott until Cal plays Nevada (or other necessary viewing)

I think this is a good move. Smith was molded into the prototypical JT QB at Oregon and was highly productive his senior year. I don’t want to speculate exactly what his role will be but just looking at his resume, one can kind of guess. Before people start laughing at me, I am aware of Smith’s NFL career and how it pretty much went nowhere. But as far as recruiting, there’s not too many programs out there that can say they have a former Top 3 draft pick on their staff.
Dilfer was a pipe dream because of work hours and his comfort ($$$) in his analyst position. Smith will literally be making peanuts for pay as a GA.
His NFL career is irrelevant to kids these days. And his college career gave great reason for the high pick.
Did anyone else watch the NFL combine? Tedford got the absolute MOST mention of any college coach during the times I watched (Urban Meyer was 2nd with the Tebow development wanking). Good publicity too — talked about how Aaron Rodgers broke the ‘mold’ and the great RB history

Smith will literally be making peanuts for pay as a GA
Unless he squandered it all, Smith shouldn’t be hurting for money. From the archives:
The seven-year deal includes a $10.8 million signing bonus and will pay Smith as much as $56 million if he reaches various performance goals. Couch agreed to a seven-year, $48 million deal with the Cleveland Browns, and McNabb got a seven-year deal from the Philadelphia Eagles that could reach $54 million.
Smith was cut after the 2002 season, so he played 4 years under that deal. The $10.8M bonus was guaranteed money.
“Literally peanuts”? Yummy. I love peanuts!

Thanks for looking that up. Still doesn’t change the fact that GAs make very little compared to an NFL TV analyst’s salary especially when it’s relative to the amount of hours they put in, which is what I was stating as the main reason why Dilfer was a pipe dream in my reply fail to yellow fever.
And from what I’m starting to hear, it is unclear if Smith is actually coming in as a GA.
what do you mean, what else would he be? dedicated QB coach?

What about a WR GA?
Can we have Burl Toler, Chase Lyman, Geoff McArthur or someone like that to come in and help with the WRs?
according to MoragaBear (BI)
Akili Smith is going to be an “Offensive Administrative Assistant” (not a GA)
sounds like a way for him to work on his coaching resume
until a regular spot opens up somewhere for him.
i.e., a qb coach job at a big six school….or a coordinator at somewhere else.

How old is Smith?
Would Smith still be young enough that he could still get a long with the kids for recruiting (Like Tosh. I know Akili is older.)? I would think he would be but the years go by fast for me now.
