Golden Recruit Darren Ervin Commits to Cal
Darren Ervin from Lamar (Houston, Texas) is Tedford & Co's first verbal pledge in the 2011 class.
BearInsider.com's full report on Ervin's Junior Day -
"I was able to sit down with the Cal coaches and we talked about what I was looking for in a school," said Ervin. "They have everything I like. It's a great area, a great program and their academics are some of the best around. I'm thinking about studying engineering and they're the No. 1 engineering program in the country."
He played quarterback, receiver and running back as a junior and is being recruited as an athlete.
Scout.com has the following notes -
STRENGTHS
Balance
Cutback Ability
Elusiveness
AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT
Power
Size
Tackle-Breaking Ability
A finesse runner and not a power runner, he is around 5'8 so he is not a large back. Does a great job of picking his hole and then accelerating into it. On runs between the tackles he runs square and can lower his shoulder low enough to punish a defender. On outside runs he runs with loose hips and can chop his feet to change directions inside or out.
Junior rushing stats from MaxPreps -
Car: 142 Yds: 716 Avg: 5.04 Y/G: 71.6 Long: 40 TD: 10
Ervin was selected as 1st Team All-District RB.

Welcome to Cal, Darren!
Sounds like Darren comes from a good family! He and his Father came out Thursday to check Cal and the area out before Jr. Day and seems very interested in school!
Ervin
According to this, he chose Cal over LSU, Minnesota, Ohio State, Oregon, Texas, Texas A&M and UCLA.

Yes
But it’s worth noting that it’s unclear whether all those aforementioned schools actually extended offers to Ervin. Still impressive though.

Welcome to Cal!
Study hard and train well your remaining 18 months of high school, D-1 football and an Engineering major at Cal is an impressive goal to have!

smart kid
Ervin sounds like a really smart kid, we can use smart players on the team, and at the university.
Recent comments from Boateng at the NFL combine hint at the fact that Cal stands out from other football programs in their emphasis on success in the classroom. So Ervin should have some good support if he wants to take on a demanding major like engineering. Go Bears!

Ray Hamilton, TE (Strongsville, OH)
We have confirmation for attendee #25 to Cal’s Junior Day last weekend – Ray Hamilton of Strongsville, OH
Class of 2011 prospect Ray Hamilton (Strongsville, Ohio) has received a scholarship offer from Notre Dame bring his total up to roughly 20, ESPN affiliate Web site IrishSportsDaily.com reports.
Oklahoma, Boston College, California, Michigan Ole Miss, Pittsburgh, Stanford and West Virginia, where his father Tom played college ball, have also extended scholarship offers.
“I have no favorites, but at the same time I’m definitely genuinely interested in a good amount of schools and taking it one day at a time,” Hamilton said. “I’m doing my research on each school so when I make the ultimate decision, I’ll be making the right choice for the next four or five years of my life.”
He also explained what he wants in a program, “I want to feel the campus atmosphere. It should feel like a home away from home environment. Definitely want to build a relationship with the whole coaching staff, but in particular you want to build a relationship with the position coach because ultimately that’s who you’re going to be spending the majority of your time there with.”
“Also the academics. When football is all said and done, whenever that is for me, what’s my degree going to do for me for the rest of my life? Where can I network and how good of a degree is it? You want to set yourself up for life after football.” – ESPN On the trail
