Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

One thing that won't change in the Cal sports landscape is our fiery quarterback discussions, as Tedford maintains the QB competition will remain open. Beau Sweeney and Brock Mansion will get their chances to start under center again, although Kevin Riley is likely in the driver's seat. (If I had to post odds, Riley would be 75%, Sweeney 20%, Mansion 4%, Wertenberger 1%)

That competition won't include Bridgford. The injury he sustained lifting weights will keep him out of action 4 to 6 months and makes him doubtful to see action in 2010. It does make Maynard's signing even more imperative, since Cal will be going into 2011 unclear of who their quarterback of the future will be.

id like to see riley again

he shows too much promise sometimes ,if he could just be consistent he could be good

That said...

…. this is sad news :(

No one really expected Bridgford to compete but still poor guy :(

I don’t see Riley not being our starting qb this fall unless he gets a significant injury, even with this ‘wide open competition’ speak.

by nickle on Feb 4, 2010 12:23 AM PST reply actions

We’ll see. I feel there were times the playcalling clearly showed no confidence in our ability to throw (perhaps as much on the o-line and receivers as Riley, but still). Honestly I think we’ve seen pretty close to Riley’s ceiling. When he’s on, he’s on, but when he’s not, he’s not. He has a maddening inability to throw in the flat and short routes, and for all the coaching and one-on-one tutelage he underwent last season regarding mechanics, he has a tendency to allow his throwing motion to break down to the point that I can sense errant throws as he’s letting go of the ball before the intended receiver/defenders even come into frame (and I’m not a terribly educated football observer, I very rarely notice these things in real time unless a commentator points them out).

That having been said, I hope I’m dead wrong and if Riley is our starting QB, I hope he excels. And if not, I hope someone else is ready to step up. If a few things fall our way (MSG stays healthy, one of the five WR recruits can make an impact right away, good health all around), I think our offense could be pretty impressive with some consistency out of our QB.

by dchu on Feb 4, 2010 12:37 AM PST up reply actions

I see Sweeney having a legitimate shot.

Riley is fine (pretty good even) when he’s calm and cool. But the second he gets sacked and/or has a bad throw…it’s like Rocket Riley time (a.k.a I’m going to zoom this one 10 feet over your head).

by DavidsonBear on Feb 4, 2010 9:28 AM PST up reply actions

Anyone else wish that Tedford would open media coverage back up? Secrecy is one thing, but it was a real shock to find out that Bridgford was seriously injured to begin with so late in the season, months after it happened, and to only now hear that he’s effectively out for 2010.

by dchu on Feb 4, 2010 12:29 AM PST reply actions

It’s the players, not the coaches, who have the ultimate power to disclose their injuries to the public. In other words, it’s not always the coaches. Sometimes the players just don’t disclose their injuries. I think each player can choose to sign a waiver which allows the coaches to speak publicly about their injuries. Perhaps Bridgeford didn’t.

As much as it sucks, player injuries are really not our business. It’s only the business of the player and the coaches.

I like what you said.
This is not a business that we have invested in. With Steve Jobs’ illness at Apple, yes, I think they need to disclose the illness to owners of the company (anyone who bought the stock).

However, these are non-professionals playing a game. We are not entitled to much more beyond game day performance, right? Anyways, something along those lines.

by concordtom on Feb 4, 2010 11:10 AM PST up reply actions

Also, under a federal medical privacy law (HIPPA) that was enacted a few years ago, it is illegal for the school to disclose information about a player’s injuries without the player’s written consent.

Personally, I don’t give a crap that the media coverage has been limited. I think it should be limited at all times because I find humor in watching people speculate about who the better backup QB is on the roster during Fall camp based on stat lines and internet reports from scrimmages that don’t even allow the defense to sack QBs.

I know some people love couch QBing and believe me, we have some of THE BEST sunday morning QBs in the country, but the fact of the matter is that we as fans don’t control what goes on down on the field. Fans need to worry about showing support, donating, and making noise at home games. If they don’t like what’s going on, nobody is forcing them to watch or be there.

The injury to Bridgford

This seems to make the Zach Maynard signing make sense even without the dynamic of bringing Allen, McCain, and King along. (Though we might have gotten King anyway?) Getting Maynard, a guy with D-I starting QB experience, maintains our depth at the position if Bridgford can’t go.

How many QBs will be have on the team next year, in some form or another?

Riley
Sweeney
Party Yacht
Bridgford
Hinder
Maynard

Some of them will be [color]-shirting. Others will be injured. Still, is that normal to have so many QBs? Some will be screwed, the math has no other option!

by TwistNHook on Feb 4, 2010 8:07 AM PST up reply actions

All of the above, plus Wertenberger the walk-on. I don’t know about “normal,” but Tedford said that he likes to have 5 scholarship QBs on the roster. Adding Maynard gives us 6, but now we’re not sure about how Bridgford’s injury will play out.

Add to the Bridgeford injury the fact that we’ve all been thinking someone transfers, whether that’s Bridgeford or Party Yacht.

by dballisloose on Feb 4, 2010 9:01 AM PST up reply actions

Can you fairly say Maynard is on the roster next year when he is ineligible to play?
So 2010: Riley, Mansion, Sweeney, Bridgford, Hinder make 5.
2011: Mansion, Sweeney, Bridgford, Hinder, Maynard make 5.
A meaningless technical point…

by concordtom on Feb 4, 2010 11:16 AM PST up reply actions

by carp on Feb 4, 2010 11:48 AM PST up reply actions

Well, let’s see… Maynard has to sit out, right? Hinder will probably be redshirting. Bridgford is injured. That means it’s going to be between Riley, Sweeney, and Mansion… and I guess Wertenberger, though I know nothing about him so if someone can tell us more, please do. Anyway, that’s 4 QBs for next year.

So, when Riley has graduated, then this is what it will look like in 2011-12… Someone correct me if I’m wrong here, but.. it’ll probably be a wide open competition between:

Mansion (Sr.)
Sweeney (Jr.)
Maynard (Jr.)
Wertenberger (Jr.)
Bridgford (So.)
Hinder (RS Fr.)

Is that right?

by atomsareenough on Feb 4, 2010 10:28 AM PST up reply actions

Do you know anything about Wertenberger?

by atomsareenough on Feb 4, 2010 10:33 AM PST up reply actions

Also, is it possible that depending on how things shake out next year for the starting job, that one of the guys who doesn’t get it, be it Mansion, Sweeney, Riley, or Wertenberger, might transfer out?

by atomsareenough on Feb 4, 2010 10:35 AM PST up reply actions

Anything is possible but keep in mind that JT is the reason why these guys come here. Our last QB transfer didn’t do so well and will not have a Cal degree to fall back on.

Let me put it this way, if you are QB and you can’t beat out the starter who is pretty average on most days and are being surpassed by the guy younger than you, you probably are not cut out for the NFL so jumping ship in my opinion is a bad move. Some guys feel that’s their best option, I don’t think it is.

by Cali49a on Feb 4, 2010 11:12 AM PST up reply actions

True. But some who transfer surely do so b/c they simply want to play and lead a team on game day while they are still of college age, not b/c they think it’s their best path to the NFL. I can understand that very well!

by concordtom on Feb 4, 2010 11:20 AM PST up reply actions

I know Wertenberger is a walkon.

by Cali49a on Feb 4, 2010 11:03 AM PST up reply actions

Maynard is not eligible to play next year as a 4-4 transfer per NCAA rules. He needs to spend at least one academic year in residency at Cal before joining the football team.

Wertenberger walks on on and Hinder redshirts. That should make Cal 5 deep at QB – Tedford’s preference.

by solarise on Feb 4, 2010 11:17 AM PST up reply actions

That’s 4 deep if you account for Bridgford’s injury, Hinder’s RS, and Maynard’s residency: Riley, Mansion, Sweeney, and Wertenberger.

by atomsareenough on Feb 4, 2010 2:15 PM PST up reply actions

Right atoms. Sorry if I wasn’t being clear. Hinder can burn his RS if JuJu strikes.

by solarise on Feb 4, 2010 3:14 PM PST up reply actions

I don’t think Maynard really factors into anything. He’s just getting a free ride because of his SUPER AWESOME DUPER brother.

by DavidsonBear on Feb 4, 2010 9:30 AM PST up reply actions

I think he’s just as good a shot as anyone else in 2011-12.

by atomsareenough on Feb 4, 2010 10:31 AM PST up reply actions

I definitely agree with you, Atom. Who’s to say that Cal didn’t reach out to Maynard and invite him to take a look? Tedford said yesterday that Maynard had participated in camp a couple years ago, and liked it, and then contacted Cal after withdrawing from Buffalo. Then THAT led to his brother and the others. Of course, that could be a story, but I found it interesting that it sounded like Maynard led to Keenan Allen, and not that Allen was demanding that schools also give his half-brother a scholarship, as Alabama posters had claimed.

But yes, assuming Riley plays 99% of the time this next season, we will have Mansion, Sweeney, Bridgford, Hinder all with little experience. Meanwhile, Maynard has started a full season at Buffalo. So, why wouldn’t he have a chance? Not as many stars (ranking)? Well, he’ll get a chance to duke it out with the others in practice.

by concordtom on Feb 4, 2010 11:26 AM PST up reply actions

Good points, and is a better reason for Maynard to be part of the program
