Berkeley right now is awesome. Just got back home. High-fived Nikola at the Bear’s Lair and congratulated Amoke when I ran into him coming out of Bear Basics (T-Shirt Orgy).

So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

It was awesome!

"But it only takes five future unabombers to take what should be a 400-comment thread and turn it into a 1,200-comment one full of anger… anger I suspect has more to do with the fact that they can’t land the hot chick rather than the fact that we signed Aubrey Huff instead of gave Garko a chance after dealing away a supposedly valuable prospect for him." -mlb22

Some notes from the ESPN National College basketball blog

Cal 62, Arizona State 46

By Diamond Leung

BERKELEY, Calif. — Cal fans stormed the court amidst confetti, as the Bears clinched at least a share of the Pac-10 title for the first time in 50 years. Cal also gets the first seed in the conference tournament. Classy move by senior Jamal Boykin, who didn’t join the party on the court until going down the line to shake hands with Arizona State. The Bears then cut down the net.
Boykin was matched up against the taller Eric Boateng on defense, and it was a constant battle down low between the two Duke transfers and former roommates. They had a long hug after the game.

3. Best Moment – Theo nailing the 3 to ice the game. You could see the happiness on his face.

4. Play of the game – Jorge’s behind the back pass 4 the bucket. He played a complete game today, playing tough D and creating offense coming off the bench. Love watching him work.

Just got back from Haas. REVEL, REVEL, REVEL. Amazing game from an awesome group of seniors. Monty has done a hell of a job with this team. At the very least, we clinched a share of the Pac-10 title. GO BEARS! THIS IS BEAR TERRITORY!

Damn

Patrick Christopher shook my hand. I will never wash this hand again.

Also Tayshaun Prince walked by me after the game. Nican Robinson was dressed like a Poet Laureate. Jorge is as beautiful in person as he looks from the stands. Theo’s a shyster. Boykin looked like a prepster afterwards. Nikola was super pumped and high fiving the country. Jerome had a net around his neck.

I think we won something too.

Oh how I wish I could have been there. All those years of near misses and teams that didn’t play like TEAMS. If the talent we had under Lou and Braun and Bozeman had been coached as well as these guys, they would have won a title too. Did you see all the set plays? Did you see all the sharp passing inside the lane? Did you see the killer D? That’s coaching, cause buddha knows we don’t have a massive talent differential.

Those guys played one hell of a game. That first half was as good as you get in college ball. We then took their will away.

For all of you that were there, congratulations. I truly hope Avinash and others took some sweet pictures and hopefully some video of Monty up the ladder. The TV broadcast stopped at like Randle on the net.

I've been very lucky my freshman year

Great moments wise. Though our football team failed to live up to its preseason hype, the rushing of the field against Arizona and especially Stanford were fantastic moments. This tops them all though, given what was at stake.

FrankCohen, I am not sure whether I think you’re lucky, or if I kind of feel sorry for you.

You do realize it’s not always like this, right? That being a Cal fan, over time, is hard? That you will, through the years, cry many hot salty tears of frustration and anguish?

I can’t even imagine how awesome it would have been to win something when I was in school. I am deeply, deeply jealous. Enjoy. Savor every moment. And make the celebration doubly epic, realizing that it isn’t always going to feel like this.

by Scootie on Feb 27, 2010 9:56 PM PST up reply actions

Serious, just keep coming to the games. It’s not always like this, and I’d like Cohen to understand that.

But I don’t ever want to wish him the anguish and frustration Cal fans have almost made it seem like it’s a ritual to go through to make establish yourself as a ‘true’ fan. Just understand all the work that had to get to this moment and enjoy it while it lasts. Might be another 50 yrs.

It was great to see all that celebration afterward, with it being Senior Day and all. With the next game being against Stanfurd (so it’s a big rival game no matter what), I’m not as worried that we might lose focus. Watching on TV, the confetti and net cutting looks crazy fun (I totally wish I was there as well) given the Cal sports history.

Pac-10 Champs!

This game killed me to watch. I finally got the teething baby to fall asleep on my chest, so I couldn’t yell or scream at the tv. Instead, I had to gesture frantically at my wife who would look up from her computer and give a lackluster, “Go Bears?”

1. I want to see the Bears go on an epic run deep into the Big Dance.
2. Jorge’s dunk would be a great pic.
3. The best moment of the game was when time expired. Old cynical Blue here. I’ve seen us blow waaaay too many leads. Post-game, I must admit to having some contact lens trouble when I saw them cutting down the nets.
4. Play of the game was Jorge’s hard foul on Boateng that led to two missed free throws. Our D gave them nothing easy from that point on and we steadily built our lead thanks to Boateng going 0-4 at the line. In fact, I don’t think he scored any significant baskets from there on.
5. Talk about what you’ll miss the most from each of these seniors.
a) Christopher – The step-back J is pretty darn sweet when it’s on.
b) Randle – 3’s from just inside half court that make you say “No…no…no…YES!”
c) Robertson – Boxing out on rebounds despite being undersized and lacking in great hops
d) Boykin – The footwork and pump-fakes on his post-up moves.
e) Knezevic – I love seeing him at the end of the game…because it means we probably have a big lead and are gonna win. Sorry, John Michael.

Go Bears! Gotta crush the ’furds.

Boateng never really did anything

after that early hook shot or whatever it was, he did nothing but miss free throws.

From the espn.com Pac-10 blog
Plus video of Monty addressing the Haas crowd after the game

Cal has fielded teams with more talent, but no team had won a conference championship since Pete Newell’s Bears took the Athletic Association of Western Universities title in 1960.

With the win, the 20-9 Bears also clinched the top seed in the Pac-10 tournament and have hopes of making an NCAA tournament run.

"This team can accomplish so much," Boykin said. "All the feelings will kick in when this season is over."

Montgomery declared that the Pac-10 was not a one-bid league, stopping short of saying the conference crown should give the Bears at least an at-large berth into the NCAA tournament.

"Not too concerned about that," Montgomery said. "Other people make that decision. They can’t take this away.

"To me, the conference championship is the crown jewel. It’s the thing that means the most."

I am a Vereenian.

by Ohio Bear on Feb 27, 2010 7:05 PM PST reply actions

I totally agree that the conference championship is much more important than the tournament. We are Pac-10 Champions. That means something. Getting into the tournament is very nice, but a second round game or even a Sweet 16 is not an achievement to brag about forever. The conference championship is.

Good news everybody!

Oregon St. won today, putting them into 7th in the conference. If they can win one game next week (at home against the Washington schools) they won’t be in the play in game to face Cal! Currently WSU and Oregon would play for the right to face Cal, although if we beat Stanfurd that could knock them down into the play-in game.

Nothin' short of AWESOME !!!

1. I want to kiss Jerome Randle.

3. The best moment of the game was when Nikola K. came into the game, ’cause then you know Monty knew it was over.

4. Play of the game was Jorge’s acrobatic “and one” shot. When those fall, you know it’s your night.

MAN I wish I was in Berkeley. KUDOS to the crowd not only did you sell out, not only were you loud, but you also stormed the court. This is good practice for football season so people now know what it takes to be a good home field 12th man. Just curious, did the alumni also make noise? On TV it seemed like EVERYONE was, but hard to say.

I'd like to smell the Roses before I die.

Alumni got into it definitely, I think it helped keep it loud that there was a mixed crowd of young and old alumni throughout the stands, it was a pretty engaging game and hard not to be excited throughout…
