DBD 2.18.10 Golden Compromises
Okanes (HT Berkelium)
Just got done with the Tiny Bates Award banquet here in Sacramento. I have not been able to reach Bob Gregory today, but did speak with Jeff Tedford here tonight. He emphasized that this was strictly Gregory’s decision and that he wanted Gregory back as defensive coordinator. Tedford said Gregory is making the move to lighten his workload to spend more time with his two young boys. He said Gregory’s priorities have changed and has decided to focus more on his family. Not being a coordinator will allow him to do that.
What are some of the compromises you've had to make between work and play, family and individual freedom, etc? And of course, between being a Cal fan and doing other things?
Ex: carp talked a little about the compromises he had to make between family and work.
I feel like I’ve flashed the potential to be wunder chemist, but I don’t want to put in the 100 hours a week to do so when I have a smokin’ hot wife and a great 6 month old. It’s not worth it. 40-50 hours, sure, but 100 is too damn much. We’ll see if I sink.
The opinions expressed in a FanPost are, in every way, reflective of the opinions of every California Golden Blogs Marshawnthusiast. Moreover, they are reflective of every employee of SBNation, including Tyler "Blez" Bleszinski.

Makin' some sacrifices this summer... it sucks.
I’m heading back to the Colorado Shakespeare Festival this summer. Ordinarily, it’d be all smiles and rainbows, but it was a really tough decision because one of my good friends is getting married in July (here in the Bay Area). I knew about it before CSF came calling, and I thought I’d just be able to say ‘no’… but it wouldn’t be the best career move to just cut ties with a company like this one. The chances of them calling me next year (after having not having worked with me for 2 years at that point) would be pretty slim, especially since I’m out-of-state and low on the totem pole.
To top it off, an Australian friend of mine is coming to America for vacation – in July, of course. So if I stay, i could be a really fun summer, what with my Australian friend’s visit and my other friend’s wedding. But career-wise, I couldn’t just blow off a concrete offer from CSF, having nothing definite coming down the pipe for the summer. Sure, I might get cast in something local, but what if I didn’t? A prime theater season (i.e. summer) wasted. It’s one of those things where… you really want to be there for your friends, and it’d make you happy to be there for them – but you can’t live your entire life for your friends… you have to take them out of the equation sometimes, and look at what’s best for you.
It’s really difficult thing to learn… but all my acting friends and colleagues pretty much agree that this is how the life is, and you gotta make some tough decisions if this is the life you choose. Plus, the decision is that much more difficult to make when you’re not quite exactly sure that this is the right career path for you. I try not to second-guess the decision too much because it really just gets me down – but what’s done is done. So I just try to focus on the good work I have ahead of me.

That gave me goose bumps!

Oregon State doesn't think much of Jorge
From Faraudo, quoting an Oregonian article. Time to step it up, Jorge!
Calvin Haynes told the Oregonian the Beavers aren’t much concerned by how much Jorge Gutierrez has helped Cal recently because Oregon State coped well the Bears’ sophomore guard last season.
"To be honest, him being inserted into the starting lineup kind of helps us, because he hasn’t been successful against our zone," Haynes said. "He’s one of those guys, as soon as you put pressure on him you can make him cough up the ball."
I am a Vereenian.
And more on tonight's game...
Faraudo’s scouting report on the Beavs
The Golden Bears know what awaits them tonight at Gill Coliseum. They have beaten coach Craig Robinson’s club just once in three tries the past two seasons, and they know why they’ve lost. Understanding it and doing something about it are two different things.
"We take shots in comparison to them pretty fast. They take their time, so you have to," said senior forward Jamal Boykin. " They can lull you to sleep. You have to stay mentally focused on defense. You end up playing defense probably 10 seconds longer (each defensive possession) than you usually do. After 10 more seconds you feel it."
The Beavers not only take their time offensively, shooting open 3-pointers or sending cutters through the lane to the basket, but they also dictate tempo with their 1-3-1 zone defense.
"They cause a problem for us," Montgomery said. "They get aggressive in that 1-3-1, they’ve got great size and it’s hard to pass through. People are open, but it’s really difficult to get it to them.
"All three games we’ve played have been mirror images. We’ve gotten up, played well and then it’s gotten dicey at the end."
MISCELLANY: The Bears rank first in the Pac-10 in free-throw accuracy (.744) and field-goal shooting (.475) and second in 3-point field-goal percentage (.373) . . . OSU, by comparison, is seventh in FT shooting (.668), last in FG percentage (.431) and last in 3-point shooting (.302) . . . Cal sophomore forward Omondi Amoke (shoulder bruise) is expected to play tonight . . . Randle needs six assists to tie Jason Kidd (494) for third on Cal’s career list . . . Randle leads the Pac-10 and is third nationally in FT accuracy at 91.9 percent.
I am a Vereenian.
The ultimate compromise
I live in Ohio because my wife is from here. Cost of living better than Cali, we live in a good school district for the kids, blah blah blah. So for the good of the family, I live in a place where I wouldn’t choose to live otherwise.
I am a Vereenian.
I’m kind of that but in reverse; my wife’s from the Bay Area and doesn’t want to leave since both her family and career are anchored here. It’s not like a desire to leave, but I could see myself at other neat places.

I’m in a similar situation. Austin is cool and all but I hate the summers here with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind. My wife has lived in the same zip code for 27 years and all of here family lives within 10 miles of us. I asked if she’d ever consider moving to the Bay Area and she said “Sure. Syd'Quan Thompson wins Tiny Bates Award
Easiest. Choice. Evair.
SACRAMENTO – Defensive back Syd’Quan Thompson was presented with the 2009 Henry J. “Tiny” Bates Memorial Award by the Cal Grid Club of Sacramento at the organization’s end-of-season banquet at the Vizcaya Pavilion on Wednesday evening.
The award is given annually to a senior on the Cal football team from the Sacramento Valley region. The accolade is named in honor of Bates, who was one of the co-founders of the club in 1947 and a right end for the Golden Bears in 1916 and 1917 under legendary head coach Andy Smith. The award was established in 1968 in Bates’ memory after his passing.

Big Slam coming up on Saturday
Is there an Axe of some kind for this?
BERKELEY – The California men’s tennis team looks to come out of a two-week layoff and pick up its play amidst a two-match winning streak as the Golden Bears head across the Bay to face rival Stanford in the first of two Big Slam matches. Cal rebounded from its first loss of the season to earn two victories against Western Athletic Conference visitors Fresno State and Hawaii at home. The Bears will bring three ranked players into this weekend’s match including juniors No. 33-ranked Jonathan Dahan and No. 98 Bozhidar Katsarov. Freshman Christoffer Konigsfeldt is ranked No. 106 and leads Cal in singles victories with 22 this season.
THIS WEEK: The No. 28-ranked California men’s tennis team (6-1) will face rival No. 9 Stanford (6-1) in the first of two Big Slam matches. The Golden Bears and the Cardinals will meet at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium in Stanford, Calif. for a 1 p.m. PT match on Saturday, Feb. 20. As the first of two scheduled meetings this spring, the outcome will not count towards Pac-10 standings. Stanford has prevailed in the last four meetings since Cal swept both matches in 2007. The Cardinal leads the all-time series, 122-72-2.

Baseball Opens The Season Tomorrow
3-game series vs. Southern Utah at Evans Diamond
Fri., Feb. 19 Southern Utah Evans Diamond, Berkeley, Calif. 1:30 p.m.
Sat., Feb. 20 Southern Utah Evans Diamond, Berkeley, Calif. 1 p.m.
Sun., Feb. 21 Southern Utah Evans Diamond, Berkeley, Calif. 1 p.m.
BEAR NOTES:
California (24-29 overall, 9-15 ninth in the Pac-10 in 2009), led by returning All-Pac-10 performer Mark Canha, opens its 2010 season with a three-game home series versus Southern Utah, Feb. 19-21 at Evans Diamond. Junior Canha had a breakout year in 2009, leading the Bears with a .366 average (fifth in the Pac-10), 17 doubles, 75 hits, 130 total bases and a .634 slugging percentage. He also hit 12 home runs with 43 RBI and a .444 on-base percentage. The Bears’ 2009 recruiting class was selected the 24th best in the nation, and third-best in the Pac-10, by Collegiate Baseball newspaper. The national publication selected Cal’s 15 newcomers among the conference’s top three, behind only 2008 College World Series participant Arizona State (2nd) and Bay Area rival Stanford (10th), and ahead of Oregon State (25th), Oregon (26th) and UCLA (33rd). The Bears’ freshman class includes left-hander Justin Jones, a seventh round draft pick of the Chicago White Sox who will start Saturday. At Oakdale (Calif.) High School, Jones was 10-1 with 118 strikeouts and a 0.42 ERA as a senior, after going 12-0 with 124 strikeouts and a 0.40 ERA as a junior. He was a two-time Cal Hi Sports All-State honoree and the 2009 Modesto Bee Player of the Year. Cal’s other weekend starters will be sophomore right-handers Erik Johnson (Friday) and Dixon Anderson (Sunday), who both excelled this summer in the Northwoods League and were named the league’s top prospects by Baseball America. Johnson, a 6-3, 220-pounder, was the sixth-top prospect after going 4-2 with a 2.61 ERA, and 49 strikeouts in 59.0 innings as a starter for Alexandria (Minn.). Anderson, a 6-5 right-hander, played for Green Bay (Wisc.) and was the league’s second-best prospect and a member of the South All-Star Team. He finished 3-2 with a 1.61 ERA and seven saves, recording 56 strikeouts in 56.0 innings over 23 appearances (five starts).

Bears are getting another kicker to walk on
Jed Barnett has a 3.6 GPA
He is a kicker. He is a punter.
Which means he is the last one picked.
Well, maybe not always, but the reality is that most major college football programs do not throw their scholarship money at specialists. At least at the beginning.
Yet Jed Barnett is a special specialist, one of the best in the nation. So indeed he was offered a couple of full scholarships from Division I college football.
Still, he is not taking the free ride.
Not yet, anyway.
Barnett, a senior from Union, has accepted California’s offer for what is called a preferred walk-on to the program. Coaches there have told Barnett that if he earns a starting spot this summer as the team’s kickoff specialist, he could earn a scholarship as early as this summer. Or next December at the latest.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

Forgive me for this. The inspiration hit me.

Lemme tell you a story ‘bout a kicker named Jed
The high school kid wants a college for his leg
And then one day, he was booming kicks away
When Cal came a calling and made for Jed a play…
Walk-on kicker, that is.
Kickoff specialist. Pac-10 program.
Next thing you know, young Jed’s a walk-on Bear
His family agrees, "Jed get yourself down there!
A Pac-10 school is the place you gotta be,"
So he’s loading up his car and moving to Berkeley.
Cal that is. Great education. Rose Bowl hopes.

Miller talks Gregory
But the timing of Gregory’s departure — just over two weeks before spring practices begin on March 6 — is hardly ideal, and it suggests this was a separation, even if it was an amicable one.
Moreover, Boise State hired Gregory as a “defensive assistant,” not as the coordinator, a job that presently belongs to Pete Kwiatkowski, who was promoted from defensive line coach after Wilcox’s departure.
Perhaps Gregory will get a “co-coordinator” slot. He was the Broncos defensive coordinator for a single season (2001) before being hired by Tedford, by the way. It will be interesting to see how it plays out. As for money, it’s possible Boise State can match the $241,000 Gregory was making at Cal (before bonuses), at least when the salary is adjusted for cost of living.
Still, the vagueness suggests a hastily made deal.

Gregory's Salary
Now, I don’t want to go into a salary fight – I skipped over most of that yesterday, but I was genuinely surprised at his salary at Cal. Frankly, it just didn’t occur to me that this was a going rate for DCs. It would seem his family would be PRETTY comfortable in Boise. I suppose it is specialized and there is some pressure associated that needs a price tag…
How much would it cost to have thousands of internet fans discussing how much YOU do or do not suck?
Ragnarok: Great Man or Greatest Man?
Actually, I was a bit surprised too
Only because $250K seems like a lot (outside of the context of college football, at least) for someone’s whose job description could (very uncharitably) be described as “Glorified Gym Coach and Amateur Military Strategist”.
But then, salaries are dictated by market forces, not “value to society”, whatever that is.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Depends on how well your personal valuation of a college defensive coordinator jives with the valuation produced by market forces. It might even depend on how much faith you have in market forces to produce the “right” valuation.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Just saying — few will disagree that a college teacher provides more “societal value” than does LeBron James, but obviously, market drives up LeBron James’ salary.
7
I suppose there’s a healthy debate to be had as to how much value ‘entertainment’ really adds to our society.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
There always is. I suppose the point is that I don’t see an issue in letting market be the primary driver behind wages.
7
Capitalist!
Actually, I think neither Rags or I are making a value judgement, just showing an interesting blip the in system. In general the market is the best driver of wages, we put a floor on it to make sure no one suffers too badly (minimum wage) and caps are silly because let some idiot throw his money around, what do I care — meaning LeBron is essentially an auctioned commodity – it’s up to his owners to figure out if they’re getting their ROI.
Ragnarok: Great Man or Greatest Man?
I wrote up a reply on tangible results, but I guess that first question is, if people had the choice, would they rather pay $50 to see Lebron play basketball, or improve their education system by .001%?
On second thought let’s not go to Camelot. ’Tis a silly place.

College Baseball
I found this interesting, projections for the ncaa baseball championship tournament. Teams from the state of California:
Cal State Fullerton
UCLA
Pepperdine
UC Irvine
San Diego
Stanfurd
Fresno St.
Cal Poly
*San Francisco is listed in the first 10 out.
8 California schools but no Cal? I don’t know anything about college baseball, but I would assume we should be somewhere in the top 8 of our own state.

carp diatribe on the underachievement of Cal baseball in 3..2…1…
I am a Vereenian.
I’ll do it instead… I’ve watched almost every home game the past three years, and though we always have the talent, it never seems to pan out.
After being an All-American his freshman year, Josh Satin was so so until his senior season in 08. After having an awesome 08, pitcher Kevin Miller was awful in 09, he’s not even in the weekend starting three anymore.
Our baseball diamond and facilities is lower tier for the Pac-10, and we can never seem to quite do it.
Even when Milano had Jeff Kent, Zuber, Penix, Nady; and wehn Esquer had Connor Jackson and Baker, we couldn’t get the job done.
Usually its our pitching’s fault…. I’m not sold on Dan Hubbs…. and did anyone ever figure out where Zuber went?
Either way, Cal baseball still rules.

best one sentence summary of Cal baseball evair.
We get the X Nady’s and the Brandon Morrow’s. We don’t get the scrappy #9 hitting 2bmen, who may not drop 30 jacks but at least he knows how to work the count, drop a bunt down, hit behind the runner, and swipe a bag. We don’t have very good relievers to bridge to a closer who may or may not be “meh.” It’s so frustrating, as chowder pointed out, that our neighbors can have NCAA-leading programs and we’re lucky to make an occasional regional.

Cal went to the College World Series one year with Kent. The Zuber and Penix teams went to 2 regionals and a College World Series. (And don’t forget Chris Clapinski, MIke Harrison, and Dan Cholowsky were on those teams with Zuber and Penix, too. Those guys were good.)
I thought Milano did a good job in the time I was at Cal. Could we have made more NCAA regional appearances during his time? Maybe. Another thing to consider in thinking about that is that those were the days of the old “Six Pac” – the Pac-10 Southern Division. We played 6 conference games a year (home and home) against UA, ASU, USC, Ucla, and Stanfurd. That was a hellish conference schedule. The SEC thinks they’re brutal in football? The old Six Pac was the shit. Think of all the great players who came through that conference on the other teams: Bonds, McGwire, Randy Johnson, Mike Kelly (a badass at ASU), Mussina, Ken Lofton, David McCarty (NCAA player of the year while at Stanfurd; didn’t pan out as a pro), Jeff Cirillo, Geoff Jenkins, Fernando Vina, Jeff Hammonds, Mark Prior, and the list goes on and on. Cal had good players, true, but so did everyone else. Maybe that’s a strike against Milano (i.e., how come he didn’t get players as good as the other teams?!?), but since I love Old # 7, I guess I tend not to view it that way.
Since the conference has gone from the old Six Pac to the true Pac-10, my sense was that Cal’s chances for Pac-10 and postseason competitiveness would improve. But it hasn’t been that way under Esquer, despite having good players. And old Nor Pac member Oregon State has risen up to become a national baseball power.

Yes, because being the 2nd most popular sport, and having 16% consider it their favorite means “nobody cares”. Hmm, by that logic, only 2% of Haiti’s population died in their earthquake last month. I guess that means nobody died! Heck, barely an EIGHTH of nobody died.

I like baseball at the purist-level. I can enjoy a good high school, college, American Legion, Summer Ball, Minor League, or Major League game. In fact, the lower down you go, the more you see guys hustling w/ hard 90’s (sprinting out a ground ball to short, for example). I like listening on the radio as I work on a powerpoint presentation or wash the car in the driveway. I like wondering: will the pitcher go with the hook on 1-2? Fastball up & in & then a slider? If I watch a game, I like to see if the catcher sets up too early, or how the OF shades the hitter. To me, that’s more entertaining than if the A’s win 7-2.

DE Ray Drew (6-5 240) of Thomasville, GA says he is thinking about visiting USC’s junior day this weekend. “I actually talked to Coach (Jeep) Hunter today and he was trying to get me to come up there this weekend,” said Drew. “I’ve got to talk to my parents to see if it’s a trip we can make.”
Drew says there is a decent chance he could make it. “My dad actually put it in his GPS to see how far it is so I think I may be able to go,” he said. Drew says he really wants to meet Steve Spurrier. “He is like one of the top ten coaches out there and he is kind of like a coach’s coach,” he said. “I would really like to meet him. And I hear the atmosphere up there is really great.”
He was at Georgia Tech for their junior day and spent the following day at Georgia. “I like Georgia Tech a lot,” said Drew. “They can give you a great education and their coaching staff is really cool. I like the offense they run. We run something similar at my high school.” He liked Athens and the campus of the University of Georgia. “Everything is close,” he said. “It’s really convenient.”

See, I don’t see any reason why LeBron goes to play for the Knicks, aside from living in NY. The Knicks suck, he’s already worshipped like a god in Cleveland, and it’s not like he can’t go anywhere he wants anytime he wants anyway!
I suppose the logic is that if he can turn Cleveland into a contender, he can turn any team into a contender – but does he really want to start rebuilding another franchise? I guess if everything went the Knicks’ way and the managed to load up on superstars, Celtics-style, that could convince LeBron to come. But they’d have to sign all the others before LeBron, and could the others handle being second fiddle to LeBron?
CGB: Wasting Your Potential, Your Time, & Your Life Since 2006.
His endorsement money might increase with the bigger money. Of course, its very possible that Lebron is already in the national spotlight, therefore moving to a bigger home market doesn’t increase the sales his image can generate.

Cleveland is America’s most miserable city
The city of Cleveland has had a colorful history. The Cuyahoga River, which runs through the city, famously caught fire in 1969 thanks to rampant pollution, and it wasn’t the first time. In 1978 it became the first U.S. city to default on its debts since the Great Depression. Cleveland sports fans have had to endure more anguish than those in any other city. The city has been dubbed with a less than endearing nickname: the Mistake by the Lake.
This year Cleveland takes the top spot in our third annual ranking of America’s Most Miserable Cities. Cleveland secured the position thanks to its high unemployment, high taxes, lousy weather, corruption by public officials and crummy sports teams (Cavaliers of the NBA excepted).

I feel bad for Thomas. He was drafted as a project player, then immediately entered Scott Skiles’ doghouse, then Skiles gets fired, and he never gets a proper coach and is played wildly inconsistent minutes. A project without proper coaching and not given room to grow was doomed to fail. I don’t see him meshing with Larry Brown well (who in my humble opinion is wildly overrated), would be a good get when he does become a free agent and is given a steady role.

Santa Monica High?
On April 15, 2005, after several fights broke out between students,7 Santa Monica police were called in, as well as backup from Beverly Hills and Culver City police. Police ordered all students into their next classes and the school was put on a lockdown for 4–5 hours. After the campus was secured, police escorted students off campus building by building.
As a result of the fighting, at least two police officers are permanently stationed on campus, and students must show their school identification cards to security guards or administrators in order to enter campus or exit during lunch. When students leave for home, identification cards are not checked. After school, anyone is able to enter the campus.
Tension brewed once more on February 3, 2006 when students arrived at school to find racial epithets targeting blacks spray-painted on four different walls around the campus, along with the symbols of the Santa Monica Gangs, SM13 and SM17.8 Retaliation graffiti was written throughout the day slandering both Latinos and African-Americans. A mediation session was set up in Barnum Hall to try to relieve these tensions,9 but it suffered from limited participation.

Hmmmm. 1 boy. 65 girls. The odds are pretty good they’re gonna see some action. Especially if they’re as good looking as Stephan Jenkins was at 21.
Actually, that year we had 3 boys for the 65 girls. They all had similar levels of success. We were equal opportunity employers!
At my wife’s house, one member is now married to a houseboy. (Although they were dating long before he got the job…)
If she was dating him beforehand, and it’s commonly the case that the houseboy is “a piece of meat for the members of the house”, then why would she be cool with him being the houseboy?

A pilot with a grudge against the IRS crashed his plane into the agency’s office building in Austin on Thursday, engulfing the seven-story building in flames in an apparent suicide meant to call attention to what he viewed as the tax agency’s failings.
Andrew Joseph Stack, 53, died in his Cherokee Piper airplane when it struck a building in the Echelon complex on Mopac and U.S. 183 – about an hour after authorities say he set fire to his expensive Northwest Austin home .

Jordan Rigsbee, OT (Pleasant Valley, CA)
One of the top offensive line prospects from the state of California next year will be standout Jordan Rigsbee (Pleasant Valley, Calif./Pleasant Valley), who is hearing from schools all over the region and has a school out of the ACC at the top of his board.
Rigsbee is the younger brother of Cal offensive lineman Tyler Rigsbee and could be an even better prospect. He’s earned all-league, all-section and first team all-state underclass honors last season.
Rigsbee plays guard for Pleasant Valley, but he is but is an explosive, very athletic prospect that plays with a mean streak.
