Okay...
I know we’re mad, but that header is a bit Nestorish…

Its funny because its true
but Nestor ruthlessly attacks young student athletes and veteran coaches instead of asking other fans to submit their opinions.
It’s not funny.
No, seriously.

I'll start it off with a beavers fan's perspective
1. Cal’s offense was unable to hit threes when needed.
2. Oregon State’s defense was able to weather Cal’s three-point threat..
3. The officiating was a little biased agains Cal.
I’m not sure what a Cal fan would say about the last three, so I’ll omit those

I agree with this completely. We had a lot of open looks that we didn’t hit. Those are the game changers for us and they simply didn’t fall. OSU’s defense gave us those 3’s and we didn’t convert and make them pay.
The officiating, don’t get me started on that.
We had an off shooting night
and the Beavers had a good one. imo the effort could have been a little better, but sometimes you just have an off night shooting the ball
"But it only takes five future unabombers to take what should be a 400-comment thread and turn it into a 1,200-comment one full of anger… anger I suspect has more to do with the fact that they can’t land the hot chick rather than the fact that we signed Aubrey Huff instead of gave Garko a chance after dealing away a supposedly valuable prospect for him." -mlb22

Credit to Robinson for a very nice coaching job. Credit to OSU for hitting their shots, out hustling us, and rebounding. I think we lose this game either way – but the officials in this one were really bad and killed our momentum with questionable calls several times in the second half.
1. Cal’s offense was never in a rhythm.
2. Oregon State’s defense was very good, Robinson deserves credit for the win based on the 1-3-1.
3. The officiating was an atrocity.
4. I would’ve liked to seen more MSF (but the refs didn’t allow that to happen).
5. The best thing about this game was nobody got hurt.
6. The worst thing about this game was (other than the officials) the idea that we might have to face these guys again in the Pac-10 tournament.
If we face these guys again I hope Max gets inserted in just to stick an elbow right in Burton’s midsection.

1. Cal’s offense was fine in the first half, a disaster in the 2nd
2. Oregon State’s defense was disciplined and consistent
3. The officiating typically awful
4. I would’ve liked to seen more aggressive offense and transition offense.
5. The best thing about this game was the fact that it was guaranteed to end at some point.
6. The worst thing about this game was that Oregon St. owns us in two sports and I can’t do a very good job of explaining why.

Hang on!!!????
Did Harper Kamp play tonight? According to the ESPN.com boxscore, he had a turnover. I must have missed this. Did he play or is this false?

Ugly Performance
1. Cal’s offense was pathetic, nothing worked well.
2. Oregon State’s defense was solid, but Bears could have done a lot better at negating that defense.
3. The officiating subpar especially with the situation with MSF.
4. I would’ve liked to seen more aggression at getting to the hoop, but then again there was never any to begin with.
5. The best thing about this game was nothing!
6. The worst thing about this game was everything that could go wrong, went wrong.
7. One other thing the lack or preparation for the zone that the Bears knew they were going to be facing was also disconcerting.
Another thing
When Cal had the opportunity to cut into the deficit either when it was at 3 or 5 they were unable to get over that hump. Fouls and turnovers plagued them. The Bears did force a few turnovers the beginning of the second half but were not able to capitalize on them.
There was a chance to get a bucket in transition after a turnover forced by the Bears but Patrick Christopher threw it right back to OSU.
I predicted this):
"But it only takes five future unabombers to take what should be a 400-comment thread and turn it into a 1,200-comment one full of anger… anger I suspect has more to do with the fact that they can’t land the hot chick rather than the fact that we signed Aubrey Huff instead of gave Garko a chance after dealing away a supposedly valuable prospect for him." -mlb22

My recap
Again, from my blog Since 59
Disappointment- Bears fall into Beaver trap
It’s been a good season for the Bears. They’ve won quite a few games and are looking at the first conference title since the 1960, and they controlled their own destiny to just that. Now they will need help.
The first half started out okay, with the score 6-7 Beavs. However, OSU would go on an 8-0 run to make it 15-6. They would close the gap to 15-13, and the Bears would hold close for most of the half. OSU would have a 6 point lead, and the halftime score would be 39-36.
Early on in the second, it would be 40-43 OSU. However, they would make their run and rush to a 42-52 lead. Somehow, the Bears just never recovered from that run. They would never recover and would lose 80-64. The offense really seemed to sputter in the second half. All in all, an abysmal performance in the second.
As mentioned in the pre-game preview, the Beavers are great at shutting down guards. This game was no different. Jerome Randle, normally an unstoppable force on the offensive end, was held to 6 points. He shot 2-9 from the field and 0-5 from 3. His lack of scoring was probably one of the most important things in the loss. Patrick Christopher was shut down similarly, scoring a mere 12 on 4-9 shooting.
The Beavers didn’t only do a great job on the guards, but they did a great job on all around defense. The Bears, who shot 50% or above in both games against the Washington schools, was held to 45% shooting and 25% from 3.
Roeland Schaftenaar, who I mentioned in the pre game as a key, proved to be just that. The big man scored 22 points. He got to the free throw line 15 times (!) and sunk 12 of them. If Boykin and Sanders-Frison cannot step up the defense against Oregon, I can easily see the Bears falling. Schaftennar was able to put up the best game of his season tonight.
Obviously, this loss is disappointing. But we still have a chance to win an outright conference title and make the NCAA Tournament. It was an obvious trap game and we fell right in. Now we just have to win out and hope the chips fall in our favor.
Go Bears!

Oh trust me, I'm angry
I just don’t let it reflect on my writing(:. But like I said, we have a chance to win our first Pac-10 title since 1960. This game, while it does hurt, doesn’t end our hopes. We can still take home the conference title and an NCAA birth. That’s what we wanted at the start of the year. If we achieve that, then we’ll see what happens in the tourney…

Cal’s offense would have been awesome if we were playing dodgeball.
Oregon State’s defense made the texas chainsaw massacre look fair
The officiating was fascinating, like a constantly unpredictable work of art that craps on you.
I would have liked to have seen the olympics.
The best thing about the game was that awesome elbowing foul on MSF against Jorge.
The worst thing about the game was that it was televised.

Craig Robinson Outcoaches Mike Montgomery Again; Cal Puts Up Embarrassing Effort in Corvallis
I didn’t watch the game, I don’t really have nothing to say about it, but I want to discuss the headline to this post. Basketball is very different from football. With football, you spend a week preparing for your opponent, watching film, coming up with a game plan and the plays ahead of time, and on gameday it comes down to executing the gameplan, adapting it based on what the opposition is doing….basically, the point I’m making, is if this was football, that would be a fair headline. Not so in basketball. Basketball coaching is all about teaching players to properly read and react within the offense, there’s much less gameplanning, much less tailoring your strategy to your opponent. You don’t spend a week watching film, preparing a gameplan, practicing certain plays….you might spend a couple of days, but the majority of coaching in basketball is about preparing your players to play the right way in the flow of the game, regardless of the opponent, and regardless of what straetgy the opponent is losing.
You can’t really get outcoached for a game in basketball, and that’s the issue I take with the headline. It’s a very football-oriented view to say that. If Cal was outcoached, it was because Monty hasn’t done a good job of preparing them to play zone offense – but that’s not a coaching job for one game, that’s something he hasn’t prepared them well for in general. It’s like if the offensive line in football isn’t using proper technique and consistently gets beat in a game because of it – it’s not the coaches are being outcoached for a game, it’s that the players aren’t properly prepared to use the right technique to be effective and so aren’t as good – that’s more along the lines of what basketball coaching is like.
As I said, I didn’t watch the game, but sounds like OSU was playing zone….dunno why every team doesn’t zone up Cal, every time I’ve watched them play against a zone, it’s been a struggle for their offense. Nobody but Randle penetrates effectively, their team passing leaves a lot to be desired, they don’t have a post presence to collapse the zone….it just might be that they either aren’t coached well to play the zone or just aren’t talented enough to beat it as well as we’d like….
Best Title of the Year
Avinash – after reading your guys’ commentary on who should do the post game writeup, I then scrolled down to see this article. The title of Robinson outcoaching Montgomery says it all. We’ve seen this 1-3-1 before. Figure it out, dammit!

Again, couldn’t disagree more. Basketball coaching isn’t really about X’s and O’s, and that’s what the title suggests, in my opinion. Going to the 1-3-1 is a no brainer, not a smart coaching move….a title critical of Monty for not having our guys coached properly to effectively beat zone defenses is fine and true, but saying “Robinson outcoached Monty” is misleading. It’s not really a chess match battle of x’s and o’s between the two coaches – it’s how well they have their players prepared to play within the scheme they use.

Missing Barry:
I said this b/c…. last year against the 1-3-1, the two lead guards passed the ball back and forth across the top, over the sideways “1”. It got intercepted repeatedly. It was painful to watch. We seemed like we had never reviewed the 1-3-1. Hardly ever moves to the basket.
The way to beat the 1-3-1 is with penetration. Remember, they only have 1 player on the baseline. So if you have two players down low against 1, then you’ve got repeated layups and force the other team out of it.
We lack the big people to pass to down low (which points to recruiting, and Monty has brought in only 1 6’8 player so far). The other piece is just teaching the lead guards how to penetrate and where to find the seems in the 1-3-1 zone. I would think Randle would be supremely suited for this, because he is small and can zip around the floor. In some games, he does well getting inside. Against … (who was it where he got blocked about 8 times recently?) that didn’t work so well, but I should still think that Randle would be able to dribble penetrate against a zone and catch cutters to the basket. Didn’t happen. Again. We lost.
I think Randle can do it, but he hasn’t and that points to a coaching breakdown in my opinion.
We did do better at NOT passing relentlessly over the top in this latest OSU game. However, we still didn’t get into an offensive rhythm by creating repeated open looks at the basket. You can tell if we are going to win when Randle and Christopher get into a good shooting rhythm. Instead, it was a struggle all game. At the same time, their offense simply out-competed our defense with Shaftenaar post up isolations (he’s tall) and various back door cuts. They weren’t overly impressive offensively, but we weren’t able to disrupt them enough. They did score, what? 80 points!
Interesting figure!
I enjoyed reviewing this listing of year by year conference standings for the Pac10.
Never before has there been a season when at least one team DID NOT finish with single digits losses. Said differently, never before have all the teams in the Conference (Pac10, Pac8, AAWU, PCC) had 10 losses or more. We are quickly approaching that milestone this year.
Last year, two teams (UCLA, UW) finished with a conference low of 9 losses. (Canary in the coal mine?)
In 20010-2, Cal and Oregon had a conference low of 9 losses.
1996-7 was a somewhat close call, too, when UCLA and Stanford had 8 losses, Cal and Arizona had 9, but Arizona went on to win the NCAA title with Miles Simon and Co. (“Simon Says Championship”)
1947-8 was the closest year: Cal went 25-9, while all other schools in the North and South divisions of the PCC had 10 or more losses.
So far this year we have:
18-8 Arizona St.
16-9 USC
17-9 Washington
17-9 California
all others already are in double digit losses.
Cal and UW are going to get their 10th loss, if not during the regular season, then during the Pac 10 tournament, and if not during the Pac10 tourney, then certainly during the NCAA’s. So they are out. Arizona State and USC are scheduled to play each other still, so there’s one loss for either of them.
It seems the best hope for the Conference to avoid this dubious record is to either root for ASU to win the rest of its regular season games and also win the Pac10 tournament. Then when it invariably losses in the NCAA’s, that would be only ASU’s 9th loss.
Another way is for ASU to win out during the regular season (becoming conf champs) but lose immediately in the Pac10 tourney and NOT get a bid to the dance (which would be odd for a reg season champ to not go).
Finally, USC could win the rest of it’s games during the regular season (including @ The Arizonas), but then never get eliminated from tournament play – because they are banned from tournament play this year.
My guess? It’s not hard to see.
Uncork the champagne – we are watching Conference History In The Making!
And why should we care about this dubious record?
