1) Favorite moment of the game was Randle’s dagger three to give Cal their first lead in the 2nd half, 58-57.
2) One word each, describe how each of these guys played tonight.
a) Jerome Randle – Bomber
b) Patrick Christopher – awoke
c) Theo Robertson – subtle
d) Jamal Boykin – consistent
e) Markhuri Sanders-Frison – eh
f) Jorge Gutierrez – bonito
g) the bench – who?
3) We still need to improve our defensive rotation. WSU got a ton of open shots in the first half and drained them. When we took them away (and Thompson cooled down) the comeback was on.
4) If I was coaching the Bears, I’d hope like hell we don’t have an off-night shooting the ball.
5) From your vantage point in the stands in Haas/couch in your living room, rate the level of excitement from the Cal fans. Well, the ones that showed up were pretty solid. Cal should always come back in games – the crowd seems to get more involved that way.

Great Second Half leads to win
1) Favorite moment of the game was Randle’s layup at the end I believe it was the only shot he made that wasn’t a three and when he made it he made sure his shot was not going to be blocked. .
2) One word each, describe how each of these guys played tonight.
a) Jerome Randle: Solid
b) Patrick Christopher: Poor first half, excellent second half.
c) Theo Robertson: Blah for most, outstanding rebound late in the game.
d) Jamal Boykin Excellent co-MVP of game
e) Markhuri Sanders-Frison: Incomplete I feel like the Bears could have used him in the paint.
f) Jorge Gutierrez: Co-MVP with Boykin
g) the bench: Nonexistent again but not many minutes, they did provide a tiny spark in the first half but soon faded.
3) We still need to improve our consistency for the full game on both sides of the ball.
4) If I was coaching the Bears, I’d get it into Christopher’s head he doesn’t have to rely on jumpers he can attack the rim and be effective as well as shown by the second half tonight. For Theo same thing.
5) From your vantage point in the stands in Haas/couch in your living room, rate the level of excitement from the Cal fans. I think that it was definitely exciting to see a lead of only 1 balloon to 16 by the end of the game.
Agrred
If only we could combine MSF and Zhang into one player (7’3" of course), while throwing in Kamp or Randle’s knowledge of the game, and easily we’d have a deep tourney running team…

1) Favorite moment of the game was _______________.
The first 2 mins coming out of halftime. Jorge had been playing his fiesty defense all game, but it was Boykin that fed off this energy and brought some of his own in the beginning of the second half. Two rebounds (?) and some drawn fouls later, Cal got their chance to take the lead, and took it.
2) One word each, describe how each of these guys played tonight.
a) Jerome Randle: Accurate. (If it werent’ for his damn accurate arm, we wouldn’t have been able to keep up and come back in the second half)
b) Patrick Christopher: Streak! (With their lankiest defender on Randle, Christo got the easier match up, and thankfully, made them pay for it for stretches in the second.)
c) Theo Robertson: Consistent. (Always the same word when I talk about Theo. You get what he has to give every game.)
d) Jamal Boykin: Alarm Clock. (Picked his game way up in the second.)
e) Markhuri Sanders-Frison: Potential (I like his ability to see the floor. Also, his hook shot 3 ft out of the rim is a great move.)
f) Jorge Gutierrez: Gamer (and not in the Aaron Rowand sense. I’m very glad to see him playing this well 2 games after his injury. It is very promising.)
g) the bench: Invisible. (That bench must be mighty warm after tonight…)
3) We still need to improve our ________________.
Rebounding. We really need Amoke back for tough games. I’m glad our “toughness” issue was addressed though. Monty has to be pleased the way this team came back for the second half.
4) If I was coaching the Bears, I’d __________________.
Give them a day of rest. The short rotation in both this and the Udub game must be exhausting. Also, point out that though this was a Three point shoot out in the first, not all games will allow us to live and die by the three. It’s no coincidence that our comeback in the second half was fueled by Boykin and Christo driving it to the rim and drawing tough fouls.
5) From your vantage point in the stands in Haas/couch in your living room, rate the level of excitement from the Cal fans.
I was watching it on a very skippy stream. The fans were quiet in the first half, but really seemed like the brought the house down once the Bears brought the game back. In particular, when the bears took their first lead of the game with 10 mins left to go, I felt like the crowd kept the energy level up for the rest of the game.

Just got back from the game. Very exciting game. CBKWit, Ragnarok, and others may be in jail right now after they assaulted the refs in the parking lot. They certainly looked like they were going to do it during halftime. I thought Monty was gonna join in, too. He looked apoplectic.
Cal really had trouble with reboards at points in this game, so that is one area to look at. After a point when Cal was shooting free throws the other 4 Cal players would stand at halfcourt to quickly get back on D. They were pretty much giving up the potential for a reboard, if the second shot was missed. Interesting strategy.
I felt that Klay Thompson looked so effortless out there. He has a really silky smooth shot. Reminded me of the time I saw Adam Morrison play against St. Mary’s. Morrison just seemed to be able to score from anywhere on the Court. Today, Thompson scored like 18 points before Cal did, I think! He was just a machine.
I felt that PC had a really good game out there. He looked exhausted by the end. What was funny was that there was a child who had fallen asleep in his father’s lap courtside. At one point, he came over and tapped the kid and went “Wake up!” I missed this, but PaleoDan pointed it out to me. I thought it was funny.

Also heard in the post game show from Randle that Christo was injured. He didn’t practice yesterday. Probably why he looked so tired.

Just got back from the game
Man, Klay Thompson is good. I hope he gets drafted sooner rather than later. Nobody on our team could guard him in the first half — not Christopher, not Theo, not Knezevic, nobody. Christopher finally stepped up in the second half and wore himself out keeping Thompson from doing much more damage, but it was almost too little, too late.
Some big shots by Randle, who passed Joe Shipp on the school’s all-time scoring list. I believe he’s in third now, behind Sean Lampley and Lamond Murray. He had something like three or four layup attempts blocked, though.
The people who showed up were great (at least once they got riled up in the first half), but there were still far too many empty seats today. Where were you people??
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

Thompson was good
The only way to slow him down is what the Bears did in the second half double team him and don’t give him room to operate.
I thought I saw Sean Lampley at the game, not sure though

From Pat Forde's blog on ESPN.com
How bad is the Pacific-10? Right now it’s a one-bid league, and the team that looks like the best of the sorry lot — California — might not play enough defense to even win a game in the NCAAs. The Golden Bears won, but were lit up at home by Washington State’s Klay Thompson for 28 points and the Cougars shot 51 percent from the field, but couldn’t hold a second-half lead (again).
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Getting lit up by Klay Thompson is not an exclusive club. I don’t think it is quite as bad as Forde makes it appear.

The Pac-10 is NOT a one-bid league unless Cal wins the tournament or Cal loses 2 or three more regular season games.

Whoever wins the tournament. Zona or ASU are the likeliest candidates—Cal too, although the fact they depend on their shooting could hurt them in trying to win three in a row in three nights.

That’s pretty much the only way that’s gonna happen. Cal has the only thing close to an at-large profile right now. The second-best RPI for any Pac-10 team is UW, and they’re in the 50’s. They also haven’t won a road game yet this season.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
I’d be happy if Cal gets to the conference tournament final. But I dunno if they can play three great games in a row.

I’m with you there. They might get by with a clunker for the first game, however.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Yeah, It would probably be only 2 in a row necessary
Since we’re the (likely) #1 seed, we’d either play the Furd or Oregon in the opening game. And I think we could beat them play okay

one game at a time
OSU is up next and they’re always tough on us. They’re tough on guards in general with exhibit A being tonite’s performance against the ‘Cats. Fogg and Wise combined to go 2 for 16. Seeing as how we are a guard oriented team that takes a lot of perimeter shots so they are and will always cause us trouble. Well at least until we get some new players next year but next Thursday will be tough. They press and push and overplay which really frustrates guys like Jerome Randle who don’t do well when crowded.
What did i tell you...didn't I say they would win? Yeah that's right I did didn't ? Wait.. what? They LOST?!?!?
also watch out for any Jared Cunningham sightings
because he did well last time we faced them. he posted up Randle several times and got some easy baskets.

Since the CGB boys don't have a recap up, here's mine
from my blog : http://since59.blogspot.com/
If you’re one of the faint heart, these Cal Bears are not for you. After trailing throughout the first half, the scrappy Bears came all the way back to win 86-70.
The game was even at 10-10 with 16:02 in the first, then the Cougars came way back. They would go on a 12-2 run to make it 22-12, before Cal brought it to 21-24. WSU would dominate the rest of the half, extending the lead to 45-34 at the end of the half.
Cal would not be denied in the second half. They made to 42-45 before WSU could even score, and would proceed to take a 58-57 lead with 10:35 left in the game on a Jerome Randle 3 pointer. WSU would take leads of 64-65, 66-65 and 68-67, before Cal took the lead for good. From the 5:17 mark on, Cal would hold and keep the lead. They closed on a 15-2 run.
Klay Thompson dominated the first half of the game, scoring 23 of his 28 in the first half. He was the primary reason WSU could take the lead in the first. Whence Cal shifted more defensive attention to him, the Bears came roaring back.
The Cougars defense also cooled down a bit in the second half. After 10 blocks in the first half, they had 2 in the second half. Cal also shot around 40% in the first half, but would up it to 50% for the game.
The Cal bench was again nonexistent. They scored a combined 3 points on the day. While they were given limited minutes, it’s still unacceptable.
Jamal Boykin again played well for the Bears. He scored 18 points, and grabbed 11 boards. After a meek first half, he stepped it up in the second half. He held the Cougars inside game a lot more in the second half.
As usual, Jerome Randle stepped it up. He scored 24 points and only turned the ball over twice. Randle is a deserving candidate for Pac-10 player of the year.
With Arizona’s loss, Cal has a 2 game lead over every team in the conference other then Arizona State.
Go Bears!

Read my Cal blog: http://since59.blogspot.com/. Go Bears!
I don’t have a problem with Cal’s bench being “nonexistent” at all.
It’s one thing to look at the box score and contribute to the point total and another to contribute by doing what you’re asked to do.
We don’t have a deep rotation at all, so we’re talking about at most 3, maybe 4 players as a “bench” and hardly a second unit. I like seeing Smith, Nikola, Seeley, and Zhang passing the ball to any of our other scorers instead of doing anything outside what’s asked of them, which is mostly to just being there managing the game and not causing mental lapses or turnovers, things like that.
I understand that they aren't called upon to score
But I could see us in a game we need to win where the bench is going to step up and need to score, and I haven’t seen that kind of ability. With our starters playing so much, I think eventually the bench is going to have to contribute more minutes and points. But I agree with you in that I like the bench managing the game.
"But it only takes five future unabombers to take what should be a 400-comment thread and turn it into a 1,200-comment one full of anger… anger I suspect has more to do with the fact that they can’t land the hot chick rather than the fact that we signed Aubrey Huff instead of gave Garko a chance after dealing away a supposedly valuable prospect for him." -mlb22
Yeah. One of the things that a lot of people, including us, don’t give our team enough credit for I think is how they step up for each other when they need to. We only have one true star on our team right now (Randle), but unlike other teams, we can survive and win games when Randle is having an off night or being shut down defensively b/c we have other guys that can step up and put up 20+. PC, Theo, and Boykin have all had solid, solid games where they put up huge points out of nowhere leading us to a win. Throw that in when Randle DOES have a stellar night with 20+ points from him, and you’re talking about two players scoring in the 40’s and 50’s, enough to (sadly) beat most teams in the Pac 10 this year.
I’m pretty impressed with our team this year and the toughness they’ve shown mentally to pick themselves back up and come back with these kind of gutsy wins, especially looking at how some people gave up on them two weeks ago when they lost to Arizona and USC.
Where are those haters now?
Boykin has been really surprising this year
We all know PC and Theo were going to make an impact, but I don’t think many thought that Jamal would make this big of an impact. He’s been key to several victories this year, and with us having 5 starters that can all hurt you we’re really tough to stop.
Those haters only appear in game threads when we’re trailing(:
"But it only takes five future unabombers to take what should be a 400-comment thread and turn it into a 1,200-comment one full of anger… anger I suspect has more to do with the fact that they can’t land the hot chick rather than the fact that we signed Aubrey Huff instead of gave Garko a chance after dealing away a supposedly valuable prospect for him." -mlb22
