Nice of NBC to push coverage of the opening ceremony all the way from 11 to 12:30
I’m sure they had very good reason to do this.

Why did NBC delay the coverage? Ugh
1) Nice opening ceremony. Not grand but good.
2) India sucks at sports.
3) Whoops at the lighting of the fire!
4) They did a nice job of incorporating a lot of different people

I couldn’t stay awake, and unfair comparisons to Beijing notwithstanding, it was frankly a slow boring opening ceremony( the effing march of the canadian flag across the stadium took forever, and they couldnt even keep in step!!!), lacking in energy/spirit/innovation…but that said, who lit the torch?

Ohno’s put in a ton of work to be in a position to benefit from whatever luck he’s gotten – I think that’s pretty unfair. Besides, Celski benefited from the same ‘luck’
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
That is true, but he’s receiving the same “Tebow” effect that is grating to almost everyone else. The way they glossed over the South Korean winner to gush over Ohno (and to a certain extent Celski) was downright bad.
In other words, Go Bears!
I didn’t realize you were watching the games on South Korean TV! What channel is that?
I am actually watching them on NBC, which is an American broadcast channel. It tends to focus on the Americans doing well, even if they don’t win. For somebody like Ohno, who is something of a media property, rare for the winter olympics, they seem to like focusing on him.

I did, however, eat Steve’s about twice a week when I was in school. But after having left . . . I went back with my cousin-in-law once (also a Cal grad) we decided to eat at Steve’s for old times’ sake and promptly decided we should’ve chosen Top Dog, IB Hoagie’s, Cheese N Stuff, Fat Slice, Blondie’s, La Burrita or Bongo Burger.
I feel that Steve’s is an excellent example of a food with flavor that fills you up for a not huge amount of money and therefore deserves more respect. Take a hot date here? No. Go here after the RSF? Hells yes.

Don't really have time, here is a quick recap
I was standing from 12:30-9 in 0 degree weather (waited 2 hours for a shuttle back to Vancouver. Yes the games have been as poorly organized as reported). The last 30 minutes of the competition made it all worth it (even the lack of feeling in my toes). As soon as the crowd found out that the last guy was in 6th (after a few of the most suspenseful seconds of my life), there was a roar that can’t even be described. Imagine the love child of Autzen Stadium and a nuclear bomb, that’s basically what the sound was like. Grown men crying, everyone hugging, screams, repeated chants of Canada and Bilodeau. Even in the 2 hour bus line there was still chants. People were in the mood to chant anything. They chanted our bus location (SFU! SFU!), they even chanted U.S.A. (after a hilarious incident where a lost foreign boy prevented the lines from moving, so a fed up group of U.S. alpine skiiers on their off day decided that they were taking control of the situation and finding the child. Olympic staff hadn’t found him after 20 minutes. The U.S. athletes found him in 2.) It was just an incredible night.

These Olympic games are one of the worst managed and organized ones I've seen
Let’s see here:
- World’s fastest luge track that exposes metal beams with no barriers and padding leading to tragic death. They react by finally providing some protection and then screw over the athletes by changing the length of the track.
- Today one of the ski sprint contestant fell into a ravine (which was her fault) and hurt her back on an exposed rock. As usual they padded it after the problem.
- The downhill alpine skiing saw many really scary accidents which thankfully didn’t lead to anything serious because of a shoddy tract.
- Terrible weather conditions leading to unfair race conditions in men’s biathlon and other races
- Horrible management. There were two cases of screwing up start time in the biathlon pursuit yesterday and then the contestant in the ski sprint was controversially allowed to start at the end despite missing her start time. Then of course the whole skating rink fiasco with the ice laying machine.
- The ****-up with the torch in the opening ceremony.
And so many other cases.
In other words, Go Bears!
Also I should mention NBC’s terrible delayed broadcasts. Total clusterfuck
In other words, Go Bears!
It is unfortunate that they tape delay the West Coast broadcasts, especially considering that its happenign in our time zone. I mean royrules22 you arel ike 2 hours away! But NBC put a LOT of $$$$ in and they need to maximize revenue. They know that hardcore fans like us are going to watch anyway.
They need to get those casual fans. For example, my wife and her mother barely care about sports at all. I tried to get my wife to go to a Cal game, she left after 10 minutes! Ai! But she stays up late and watches the figure skating and other sports each night. Last night, in two separate parts of America, both my wife and my mother-in-law stayed up late in their respective locations watching the halfpipe. Shaun White is a star to not just hardcore fans, but also the casual fan.
I think based off of the experience with my family here, NBC is succeeding. They know we’ll watch anyway, they have to bring in other fans. That requires certain things which you may find annoying. But they can annoy you enough, you’ll still come back. People like my wife and her mother won’t and have a higher bar for initial interest, too.

Their decision to hold many of the competitions at Cypress Mountain is. It’s being suffering from the effects of El Nino and what amounts to spring weather and a serious lack of snow.
In other words, Go Bears!
Arent these plans made years in advance? Like 6-8?
President Emperor Warlord Of The Sun!
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
Well, when they pitch themselves to the IOC (as we just saw with Chicago for 2016 or whatever), dont they have to have a detailed plan. The IOC doesnt just hand this out randomly. Unless you give them sweet watches.
I mean royrules22 its like you love to just criticize things or people without having even an inkling of anything remotely close to facts. Why don’t you try to find out some facts first before you spout off agian?
President Emperor Warlord Of The Sun!
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
So you’re saying because of that one point (which is valid btw – the weather played a huge detrimental factor in these games) my other points are invalid?
In other words, Go Bears!
Your point appears to be that the weather played a terrible role and so……what? So they should have canceled them? They should have not held them at Cyprus whatevers?
My point is that these decisions were probably made years before anybody knew what the weather was going to be like and cannot be changed at the tail end. Winter Olypmics but their very nature are in areas prone to bad weather (i.e. snow!). So, the chance of a problem is high. Yes, it is unfortunate that the weather has been bad. I guess I just don’t see what your point is. What would you have done?
Also, I am not speaking to your other points in specific here. I am mentioning that you often seem to go off without limited facts and then when people question you about it, you go “maybe dunno.”
Well, maybe you should know before you go off. Oh wait, this is the internet, I forgot.
President Emperor Warlord Of The Sun!
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
I was making a list of things that went wrong with this olympics and clearly the weather was one of them.
As for your facts here is what I know. Vancouver made it’s bid with the IOC late in the 90s during the Nagano time (I believe 1998). However the bid was made in conjection with British Columbia as so to be able to hold most of the games in nearby Whistler. Thus they had options of hosting the games in cities other than Vancouver such as Cypress Mountain, Whistler and Richmond, BC. The fact they decided not to move the games from Cypress when they had the history of bad weather and a lack of snow (the World Cup salom was cancelled in 2009 in Cypress Mountain due to lack of snow) is a management oversight. Is it in the same category as not padding an exposed steal beam? No, but it still is an oversight.
In other words, Go Bears!
But when was that decision made? Before or after the World Cup salom? Is there a better place than Cypress Mountain to host them? What is this better place?
President Emperor Warlord Of The Sun!
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
There are other mountains, but I presume they want things to be in a central area and those other locations would be far away. They are already pretty spread out (Whistler is 2 and a half hours away, Cypress is 1 and a bit, as well as 4 different stadiums for various events, a torch that is not near any of the venues). As much as it pains me, there have been a lot of flaws with how this was organized. There is a big controversy with the torch, because there was (is?) a fence blocking people from getting close to it.
However, the world gets to spend 2 weeks in Vancouver. Quit bitching.
All aboard the Jerome Randle Smart Car!

It isn’t about when the decision was made (likely was before) but rather that they did not move the games out of Cypress.
In other words, Go Bears!
Also you’re arguing about the smallest of problems in the entire games. The other items in the list are significantly more problematic
In other words, Go Bears!
Yes, okay, you’re right, they should just cancel the games altogether and wait for Russia.

If you watched today’s game and still believe hockey is boring then you are more stuck in your ways than someone who still uses a telegraph.

If you could be an Olympic athlete, other than basketball, your sport/event: Hockey. I’ve never ice skated, but I tip my hat to hockey players. It seems like they have to do a lot. They have to skate on ice and hit a puck with a stick.

Finally, someone doesn’t say that they “don’t get” hockey. I don’t see how hard it is to understand either. Other than the rules about offsides and some penalties, the basic premise is not much different from soccer (hell, even basketball): try to get the circular object in the goal.
I’m so disappointed he didn’t say curling.
