So Maryland is playing a Bowl game.
as far as what i saw last year, they were a pretty bad team.
i wonder if the program made a good turn-around.
Ralph Friedgen was named ACC Coach of the Year. Not sure what he did, but he turned a 2-10 team into an 8-4 team this year.
The Utah-Boise State game is definitely a game I'll be watching.

i dont like Boise State, but i kinda feel sorry for them.
Really, its a BCS or bust, for them. One loss drops them from a possible BCS bowl to a relatively “local” bowl game vs. Utah.
Had Cal won the game vs. the Huskies, we would have wound up in a much better bowl than them (Holiday).
Pac 10 Slots
All of the lower bowls got a lot better without them middle 2/3rds of the Pac 10; at least as far as fans in the seats. ND, Nevada & Boise State will bring a lot more fans than ASU or Cal after “meh” years. I for one am kind of glad I don’t have to worry about heading down to SD to watch Missouri kick the crap out of the Bears.

What would have happened if Boise and TCU were undefeated?
Would one of them be screwed out of the BCS bowls and gone to a small-time bowl with their undefeated record? I don’t know how the non-BCS top #6 finish works if there are multiple teams that qualify.
Wow, so we couldn’t fill 3 of our bowl tie ins?

I love this.
What’s the over/under on how many fans Stanfurd brings to Florida? I am going to suggest 1,000. Their ticket allotment is 17,500.
Haha awesome. The Orange Bowl doesn’t care though because the school is obligated to eat the cost correct?

So, we all have to suffer because Stanford sucks now?
This went from Stanford paying all the Pac10 schools out of their payday and now its all the Pac10 schools having to pay Stanford!
In the future, why dont Stanford just return to sucking and not have to inconvenience us so

No, this is not correct. The Pac-10 allocates an expense amount that they will pay for each school going to a bowl (it varies depending on the bowl — the Orange Bowl will carry a bigger allowance than the Holiday Bowl due to travel expense) but it does not cover the ticket allocation costs.
Are there links available to help us better understand the situation here? Thanks.

This is the story RedOscar is referring to:
Stanford is on the hook for 17,500 tickets for the Orange Bowl, which is in Miami on a Monday night. What it doesn’t sell must be taken out of the expense allowance it receives from the Pac-10.
Asked if he thought the Cardinal would sell its allotment, athletic director Bob Bowlsby said: “I wouldn’t want to bet my life on it, but I think we’ll do pretty well.”

well, this really really helps :]

also
won’t we get a lot of money b/c we get part of the revenue of the bcs games oregon and furd go to, PLUS we save money by not going to a bowl correct?
Bowl expenses are deducted from the game payouts before being split up among the conference, so you’re right that for the games like the Las Vegas Bowl and Poinsettia Bowl, teams lose money.

If we had beaten Washington we would have been in that Holiday Bowl spot. A bus ride to the Emerald Bowl and not staying in hotels would have been the best from a cost perspective, but I think those savings would actually go to the conference distribution, so of course teams don’t care about minimizing travel costs.

Correct, the team stayed at a Union Square or SOMA hotel (can’t remember which one now). And yes, the team stays at the Hilton Garden Inn in Emeryville (they used to stay at that Doubletree Marina) before games.

Don’t you think the Orange Bowl is the least desirable possible BCS Bowl for Stanfurd — or any west coast team? Maybe the Sugar Bowl is just as bad, but I, at least, would much rather travel to New Orleans than Miami. My folks went to the Sugar Bowl one year when West Virginia was in it, and they said it was a lot of fun (except that WVU got destroyed).
How ya gonna keep 'em down on the Farm, after they've seen Berkeley?
Miami sounds good to me. New Orleans > Miami > Phoenix.

But in terms of the time and expense involved in getting to the game, the Fiesta Bowl would be far preferable for west coast teams. I went to Orlando when Cal was in the Citrus Bowl. The trip was hellish to make, because trying to get airline tickets to Florida during the holiday season at the last minute was a nightmare and super-expensive. We ended up going on the Alumni Association trip, just because that was the only way to get the airline tickets and hotel sorted out at that time of year. It was pretty expensive, but better than we could have done on our own. And there was a very small Cal contingent. If Cal had been playing in Arizona, fans could have driven if need be. There would have been a lot more of us.
How ya gonna keep 'em down on the Farm, after they've seen Berkeley?
In fact, I went to the Copper Bowl in Tucson the year before the Citrus Bowl, and I think there were considerably more Cal fans there than in Orlando, even though the Copper Bowl was a much less desirable bowl.
How ya gonna keep 'em down on the Farm, after they've seen Berkeley?
Did Southwest fly to the Miami area circa 1990? Coast to coast travel is incredibly cheap these days.

That’s not Nevada’s fault. We should’ve played them better. Besides, Nevada’s legit, and they beat one of the best teams in the country in Boise State. Not to mention, we had plenty of other opportunities to secure bowl eligibility in close games against Arizona, Oregon, and Washington, and we just didn’t do it. That’s on US, not on Nevada. I’m rooting for them to clean BC’s clock.

Washington draws Nebraska again
Uhh, doesn’t anyone remember what happened the FIRST time?
Email: bearsnecessities@gmail.com
for the sake of national perception, lets pray this doesn’t happen. actually, i’m worried too about the pac-10’s bowl match-ups, except furd-vatech. if oregon gets blown out, that would hurt us the most. i don’t want oregon to win, but i want to shut the SEC up for once.
Probably nobody will pay any attention to Zona or UW – the Pac-10’s rep rides with Oregon and Stanfurd this year.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
i don't think they will either
but the last few sec opponents in the title game have been blown out, so im just hoping the same doesnt happen to oregon.
Traditionally
When Big-12 meets Pac-10 in bowl games, such as Holiday, it was usually a top-tier Pac-10 team vs. a mediocre Big-12 team.
But this year, Nebraska (10-3) plays Washington (6-6), and OkState. (10-2) plays Arizona (7-5). Interesting stuff. And im sure Big-12 will dominate both games.
Holiday Bowl
I think the Blackshirts are going to go nuts on Locker (again); think what they would’ve done to Brock :o(. Oh the horror.
Not only that, Arizona-Okie State will be playing each other in 2011
So we have two Pac-10/Big-12 matchups that are either rematches or soon-to-be rematches. Gotta love the idiotic bowl system.
Email: bearsnecessities@gmail.com
Hooray bowl system!
Coach_Burnett: Temple finishes season 8-4, just like UConn, & beat UConn 30-16. UConn is going to a BCS bowl. Temple is going nowhere.
Email: bearsnecessities@gmail.com
Hmm, there were 72 bowl-eligible teams for 70 spots. The two odd teams out were Temple (8-4) and Western Michigan (6-6).
I thought there was a rule that bowls had to select eligible 7+ win teams over any 6-6 team, but maybe the bowl tie-ins blew that up.
I hate Temple. They completely humiliated us in the stupid Garden State Bowl in 1978. Fucking Owls.
How ya gonna keep 'em down on the Farm, after they've seen Berkeley?

TCU vs. Wisconsin should also be a good game, I think. The Fiesta Bowl will be a terrible game. I have no idea about the Orange Bowl. I think Stanfurd will win it, though.
by atomsareenough on Dec 5, 2010 9:41 PM PST up reply actions
If only they could have flipped Connecticut and Stanford, the Fiesta Bowl would have been interesting and everyone could have skipped the Orange Bowl.
…Why couldn’t they flip UConn an Stanfurd, come to think of it? That would’ve been better for both bowls.
by atomsareenough on Dec 6, 2010 6:54 AM PST up reply actions
It was the Orange Bowl’s choice. It’s not like UConn football has a massive, legendary following that would take its talents to South Beach. Furd is a much better team and provides a chance at a decent game and better TV ratings.
They’re still on the East Coast and probably have more actual fans than Stanfurd…. Though, I guess it’s Stanfurd that has to worry about selling tickets, and not the Orange Bowl. Still, I bet it won’t be a very interesting game.
by atomsareenough on Dec 6, 2010 9:59 AM PST up reply actions
yeah, that’s OK. Probably the best of the bunch. Watching tOSU lose their BCS bowl game again isn’t exactly novel. Wisky’s overrated, although hella Wisky fans will be in LA for this tilt. Oklahoma-Furd would have been much bette than the current Orange and Fiesta Bowls. Why does the Big East still have an auto-bid? The ACC’s at least a little better. It would be nice to see the ACC pick up WVU and Pitt while dropping another couple of schools to beef it up.
