Potential Texas Defensive Coordinator Justin Wilcox Seeking Out Tosh Lupoi ($)
This isn't the first time our super recruiter has been offered a plum opportunity. Lupoi I believe was rumored for several jobs last year and took none of them. I imagine we're going to hear these sort of things happen year after year.
Of course, the fact that it's Wilcox (former Cal linebackers coach when Lupoi was playing) should give Cal fans plenty of reason to fret. But let's let this play out--hopefully Tosh will get enough of a raise for his outstanding recruiting efforts, and this rumor (like the ones from last year) will amount to nothing.

First, He would presumably join Wilcox to play the same role he does at Cal. Second, if Tosh leaves, Cal has no one to blame but itself. Third, if he leaves, that may be the last straw for my faith in this regime.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
I don’t know why Cal’s inability to pay Texas $$$ would be a reason to lose faith in this regime. It’s been well documented that Tedford doesn’t have gobs of cash to throw at assistant coaches, so I fail to see how we could blame him if somebody left for more money.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Yous eriously fail to see how throwing Tosh under the bus for the “cheating” scandal would have any effect whatsoever on his willingness to stay at Cal? As for money, Tedford could always take a cut to help the program keep Tosh.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
Well, for one we don’t really know if Tosh was actually thrown ‘under the bus.’ And I seriously doubt money is that simple, that Tedford can just toss a few 10,000 dollars Tosh’s way.

Why couldn’t Tedford take a pay cut? It is that simple. Even if his contract does not allow any modification, couldn’t he donate money to the program to have it in turn given to Tosh?

Everytime this topic of "Tedford should pay his assistants" gets brought up, the stupider it sounds.
Tosh got a hefty pay raise last spring after his number was called by innumerable head coaches (the figures haven’t been released, but I’m sure he’s making fine coin). He is fairly well compensated for a D-line coach.
But Cal is not going to ofter top-level dollars for the coaches—there isn’t enough money in the budget. If the issue is just money, then he’d have left last year for one of the top schools that offered him.

The notion that Cal doesn’t pay top dollar for coaches is flatly wrong given how well compensated Tedford is. Now, when it comes to assistants, yes, they are not compensated on par with top programs. That said, that’s a resource allocation issue to a degree.
With regard to Tosh being well compensated for a defensive line coach, yes, he is. But, isn’t he much more than that really? He is our go-to recruiter.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
I'm fairly sure most of Tedford's contract is via Nike
I believe Twist did a post on this recently, but at least two-thirds of his contract comes from an outside source (talent fee? not sure).

He is a good recruiter, but all these SoCal guys who have just committed have paid homage to Ron Gould, who heads up the SoCal effort. Tosh does not bring all the boys to the yard — he’s a beast, but he’s not a one man band.
Also, Tedford getting paid and then donating money back to the program so it could be paid to Tosh is just about the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard. Aside from the fact that donations are not that specific, the University would be paying payroll taxes and benefit costs on that money twice — a terribly inefficient way to pay anybody.
Also
Should be noted that it is in Tedford’s contract that he has discretionary funds to apply to assistants. So in a sense he can pay the man. But that fund is relatively small and with budget cuts I’m guessing has been reduced if not eliminated.

If this is about what I think it’s about, you couldn’t be more off-base.

To assume Tosh would leave because of this isolated incident is a reach at best. We don’t know what happened. To assume Barbour and Tedford “threw him under the bus” would imply that you have a fairly low opinion of those two as individuals and as decision-makers with regards to character.

Let me see, Tosh was suspended. Neither came to his defense publicly. And even if it was Tosh and Tosh alone, perhaps Tedford shouldv’e taken the blame publicly and reprimanded Tosh privately. Regardless, it was a pretty significant embarrasment (yes, that is an assumption, but a fair one I’d say). I would say that incident, in combination with pay and lack of upward mobility could all result in his departure
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
First of all, a lot of people do not agree with the decision to suspend Tosh (myself included) but you have to stop assuming that Cal doesn’t have the money for a pay raise. I don’t know where you’re getting this assertion.

I am not assuming Cal cannot afford a pay raise. Hopefully they can, I was fofering up solutions above in case they cannot afford it.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
Let me see, Tosh was suspended. Neither [Barbour or Tedford] came to his defense publicly.
I’m a little confused. Is Tedford supposed to come to Tosh’s defense and say, “hey, no big deal buddy, cheating is okay!”
Anyways, Tedford did publicly comment on Tosh’s suspension. I’m too lazy to find it, but he basically said that he has a lot of respect for Tosh, that he made a young coaching mistake, and Cal Football is not about faking injuries.
To me, that doesn’t exactly sound like “throwing under the bus.”

No, no, no, let’s just assume the best too. Speculation goes both ways.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
I’d prefer to do so as well, but experience shows me that isn’t realistic either.
Look, I don’t know what happens and no one else does either. But, again, here are the facts: 1) There were allegations that Cal cheated against Oregon; 2) The Pac-10 asked us to look into it; 3) Tosh took the fall and was suspended for our final game; and 4) Tedford did not take the blame. I will make the assumption that is was embarassing.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
And despite these accusations, we landed three top defensive recruits, two who will be coached by Lupoi. Man, that’s really hurt us so hard, hasn’t it?
I think I want to get embarrassed more.

Thank goodness they all signed! Oh waait, it isn’t signing day yet. I have no reason to believe those guys won’t sign with Cal, but you should know better than to brag about recruits before the deal is done.
And, whether it impacts recruiting or not from Tosh, you’ll have a hard time explaining to me how suspension for a game isn’t a slap in the face, an embarassment. But, go on . . .
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
I’m not bragging (although Walls already faxed in his LOI). But the fact that they verballed barely two weeks after the incident shows that what happened with Lupoi has no bearing on their eventual decision. And in the end, in terms of PR, that’s the only thing that matters.

Tosh didn’t take the “fall” if he did what he was blamed for doing. He did wrong, and he was deservedly punished for it.
If he didn’t do it, and the department was looking for a fall guy, then I would assume he volunteered. Had he been blamed when he was blameless, any ordinary person would have quit in disgust already.
I can’t believe such a thing didn’t also reach every member of the coaching staff and, most likely the entire team. Maybe not, but that would be a sign that there’s a real disconnect between the coach, and the assistants/players. Either way it’s ugly.

Why Should Tedford Take the Blame?
If Tosh did it on his own, in the heat of the moment, why should JT take the blame?
All JT could say, is it happened on my watch and I take responsibility for my assistants. Would that satisfy you?

This isn't the type of Christmas gift I was hoping for. Give me coal!
Save Tosh!
Wilcox is leaving Tenn for texass? Hadn’t heard that.
Hope NONE of this comes true!
Bring back the Pac-10!!!
I’m sure JT & company will do whatever it takes to keep Tosh. If a school offered Tosh a step up to defensive coordinator and he wanted that promotion, there is not much the school could do. But for a lateral move like this to be a defensive line coach elsewhere, the program can easily step up to ensure that he stays.

Anywhere but Texas
I’d rather see Tosh at the furd than with those texassholes.
Well, you're not hardcore unless you live hardcore.
I was watching parts of the “30 for 30” on SMU yesterday and thought it was pretty interesting when Eric Dickerson talked about how nasty UT recruiting was back then. Even though it sounds like all the recruiting in the Southwestern Conference back then was shady, Texas apparently threatened Dickerson that if Dickerson left the state of Texas to play college ball ($C had offered him), the UT boosters would make sure he could never get a job in Texas again.
Threats like that are far worse than cash / incentives in my opinion.
I wish
people would get as agitated when our bio, chem, physics, english, history, sociology, psych prof’s leave to a private school for more money. That concerns me alot more.
Leaving Berkeley for Texas… your loss as much as ours.
People do get upset when professors are poached by private schools. Maybe if you bothered to read the Daily Cal you would see coverage of these things.

I wish Tosh the best
If he wants to leave for Texas so be it. He’s done wonders at Cal and nothing would please me more than seeing him win the Rose Bowl in Blue & Gold.

No, but their relationship could be a factor, so we’d prefer candidates who can’t leverage anything like that (Shannon, for instance).
