Mike Montgomery, Coaching Staff Self-Impose Sanctions On Cal Basketball Program
Jeff Goodman reports:
"FOXSports.com has learned that California men's basketball coach Mike Montgomery and members of his coaching staff appeared in front of the NCAA's Committee on Infractions Friday in Indianapolis.
According to multiple sources, the Golden Bears are being investigated for impermissible phone calls and have already self-imposed sanctions on the program."
Here is the official statement on the matter, courtesy of Cal Athletics.
"In 2008, as a result of normal review and monitoring procedures, the Cal Athletic Department discovered violations of NCAA by-laws that govern the frequency and number of phone calls that coaches are allowed to place to prospective student-athletes. Cal quickly self-reported the findings to the Pacific-10 Conference and the NCAA, and imposed sanctions on individuals employed by the men’s basketball program. Internal and external investigations have already concluded that the violations were not intentional. Because the NCAA Committee on Infractions is currently considering the final disposition of this case, we will have no further comment until a final decision is rendered."

From AW PRINCE on rivals
I am stealing this directly word by word, but it cleared this up for me:
“Let me try to clear this up for everyone so you guys know what’s going on, as I’ve known about this for nearly three years now. This is really nothing new, and frankly, it isn’t that big of an issue at all.
I’m sure Coach Montgomery will say the same thing when he’s ready to talk about it.
Some folks from the Cal Athletic Department did meet with the NCAA to go over a handful of monitoring details, which sprang up in the summer of ’08 after Coach Montgomery took over. A few calls were reported erroneously, and the details regarding the way Cal reports dropped calls (from cell phones) and then legs them into the system had to be addressed.
The staff never did anything wrong whatsoever. It was more input and logging.
To showcase this as a Cal basketball violation, and spotlight Coach Montgomery, whose record stands about as stellar as anybody’s in the game when it comes to recruiting, is ridiculous.
Go back to enjoying the news on Bigelow; there’s nothing to this crap. ~AWP"

I think its always helpful to try to link as much as possible. I am not entirely certain what the various levels of rivals are, so I do not know much more about that.

Interesting…this seems like actually an anti-violation. We actually over-reported the numbers of calls we were making because we weren’t correcting for dropped calls. (I imagine the NCAA has some sort of guideline for what is a dropped call and what is a new call.) Then we explained it, but since the NCAA is completely irrational, we decided to self-impose some form of sanctions rather than let them do something irrational.
Is the self-imposed sanction that we are going to start correctly reporting our calls?

If that is all there is, then I can relax. It is shocking to hear Coach Montgomery and the program self imposed sanctions for anything. I wonder what the penalty will be.

I was a bit worried when I saw the headlines.
