Chip Kelly and Jeff Tedford engage in a war of words in the Pac-10 coaches conference call.
"I really don’t know what officials can do … If teams are doing that...they're basically throwing the white flag." ~Kelly
"Anytime anybody goes down against Oregon, they always think that’s the case. But that's not the case." ~Tedford
Pssst, Coach Kelly. If you're insinuating that we threw in the white flag, go take a look at that scoreboard of yours and remember how many points your offense scored. You were lucky to win. Shut up and go finish your season.

Anybody have a link to the context or the exact question asked? I’m curious if his response is particularly pointed at Cal or “teams” in general because, as Avi noted, Cal wasn’t exactly in position to “throw the white flag” per se
I think both were asked about faking injuries in general.

He said “throwing”, not “raising”. They are THROWING the white flag. Isn’t throwing the white flag a universal sign of friendship, or should I just stop making stuff up?

what about the red flag?
CHALLENGE
Ryan Verdugo, my adopted son, strikes out 13.2 per 9 innings in his career. He has a 1.63 ERA in San Jose this year. Call him up to be a Flying Squirrel. He is also a member of the "Giants who went to LSU" club with Mike Fontenot, a.k.a Grant.
Ahhhh, Chippy
You guys won using a “gimmicky” offense designed to take advantage of defensive exhaustion. Other teams may have (or may in the future) do things that will try and control the tempo. Get over it.
I'm faking an injury right now! Or ... am I?
Recommendation: let it go, fellas.
This is what we know:
1. Tedford is right: it is not always the case that these are faked injuries
2. Kelly is right: when a player if faking an injury it is an admission that he or his team is not ready to compete and needs a delay
3. there were only 2 or 3 possible instances in the Cal-Oregon game, and it is not relevant to the outcome
I don’t know if there is anything else worth saying.
If Oregon or its imitators continue to succeed with this tactic of quick snaps and other teams respond by faking injuries then the conference or the NCAA will need to come up with some rule guidance. In the meantime the relentless bickering is not doing anybody any good.

I don't have anything wrong with his statement
What I do have a problem with is why Oregon fans and Kelly are making a big deal about it NOW as opposed to when the Furd and other schools committed similar actions, and the fact that Oregon fans are calling our team a bunch of cowards based on these “2 or 3 possible instances”. We can’t have the negative perception of Cal football as a cowardly program spreading around.

Thanks for the reply. (And all the interesting posts.)
I don’t like the school being denigrated either, and I am not convinced the guys were faking it (but I have no basis for determining it). I fear that in giving the issue a high profile we are providing oxygen to an argument we are not going to win (since we are mixing metaphors). All we can say, and I think it has been said well in the general post you all put up, is that it was a couple of possible incidents that had no bearing on the outcome. If Oregon wants to focus on that, and boo injured players, that’s their problem and they have to live with themselves.
Jason Hafemeister
I'm pretty sure Oregon fans
will live with the fact that they are 10-0. It’s just annoying that dozens of these guys bombard our blog over the last few days.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
Oregon fans have been making a big deal about it since it started to us against ASU. Kelly made mention of it at ASU half time.
We have instances with ASU, Stanford, and some think maybe Washington.
Unfortunately, you are only now seeing it because Oregon just played you Cal.
It’s spelled "S-H-U-F-E-L-T-A-L-I-T-T-L-E-T-I-G-H-T-A-T-T-H-E-H-E-E-L"
They made a little deal about it, but it didn’t matter because they won handily. Now that it was a close game, they’re bringing this out as proof that we didn’t play fairly.
Now the popular story with a lot of people around the country is going to be “This is how Cal’s defense stopped Oregon.” That isn’t fair.

Well, anyone that would say something like that is pretty thickheaded. Cal’s defense “stopped” Oregon because they played assignment defense flawlessly. It isn’t anything magical or gimmicky. It’s was sound fundamentals and it should be commended.
It’s spelled "S-H-U-F-E-L-T-A-L-I-T-T-L-E-T-I-G-H-T-A-T-T-H-E-H-E-E-L"
I haven't seen anyone use that as an excuse.
A minor annoyance for our team, sure, but your linebacking corps is what contained our offense. No one this side of reason is claiming that’s how Oregon was contained on Saturday.

So effing what. It had no impact on the outcome of the game either way. Bitching about potentially “fake” injuries when you don’t really know for sure is lame, and booing players who are down, when you don’t really know for sure, is also lame. Which we’ve been over and over and over the past few days. Why can’t we all just move on with our lives?

I think most Duck fans have
I know I have. I still think it had little to no impact on the game.
However, it’s not a Duck or a Bears thing anymore. It’s national media, and a lot of people out there think it’s newsworthy or at least entertaining.
You asked why people are making a big deal out of it. Duck fans aren’t any more, or at least not nearly as much as they were over the weekend. It’s now EDSBS and ESPN and radio shows and the Pac-10 commisioners that are. I wish it’d go away, or at least people would stop claiming that it had anything to do with California’s dominant defensive performance, but it hasn’t.
I find it slightly amusing that exactly one minute after you post this, one of your fellow Ducks provides links to articles concerning this.
Anyways, I think most Cal fans have moved on to focus on the Big Game now.
It's been going on since the Pac-10 season started.
The UO @ ASU had the most occurrences. Kelly commented on it at halftime (“Looks like the World Cup”). Furd too.
"The forward pass ... or as Woody Hayes would have called it, a trick play."
Thanks for posting this. I thought there were only one or two instances of possible faked injuries in the first place, which made it mystifying that it was talked about as though it was the key to our gameplan against Oregon. I really wish that the Tipoti looking to the sideline thing hadn’t happened. It certainly does not look good, and I do not like the admission of not being ready, as you say. But I don’t think there is any evidence that it had an impact on the game.
I do not believe those conference calls are made public.

The O... as in, Overrated
That’s what Saturday taught me. Our defense played well enough to win that game, but the special teams and offensive units did not.
What’s going to happen when Oregon finally plays someone with solid D who copies Cal’s physical, man-on-man scheme and also brings an offense and special teams unit?
No way on Earth Oregon could beat Auburn or TCU. Those are good defenses that would stifle the the Duck’s gimmickry, and those offenses would steamroll the Ducks. Boise State probably beats them again this year, too, if they get the chance.
Enjoy No. 1 while you have it Duckies. You’re O-verrated.
Meh, if you’re looking for overrated, look no further than Auburn. 3 point win against Miss St. 3 point OT win at home against Clemson (Clemson missed a 32 yard FG in OT. 8 point win against South Carolnia. 3 point win against Kentucky. 7 point win against LSU. Cal’s better than Clemson, Miss St and Kentucky. Auburn’s been really lucky, make no mistake about it.

I dunno, that’s a pretty legit resume to me.
They’ve been lucky, but it’s not like Oregon, Boise and TCU have dominated equal competition on a regular basis to say they have an edge on them.

A pretty legit resume in terms of yeah, they won those games with a lot of random variation (or luck if you prefer) on their side, but if you play them over again they probably come away with 2-3 losses. Sagarin has Oregon ranked as the #22 toughest schedule, Auburn #37, and Oregon has been consistently winning big. We’re their first close game that with less random variation on their side they might have lost. In terms of what their resume says about their “true talent level”, Oregon >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Auburn.
I don’t really buy TCU or Boise St as better, either, just because of the lack of competition.
by Missing Barry on Nov 16, 2010 3:18 PM PST up reply actions
I think Auburn’s D would give us more opportunities to score and run the offense we like to run (as opposed to the way Cal shut us down). They are also explosive offensively so that game is probably a shootout.
Boise is a tough one. On one hand , we have played them before and while, yes, we lost both games, the final scores in both cases were pretty close (19-8 and 37-32). How we would match up with this years team I don’t know.
TCU is a very good team defensively (and offensively of course) so they probably pose a pretty significant challenge for us.
Stick your Duck in a Trojan, they burst under pressure.
Auburn…good defense
.
Does not compute.
I agree that TCU or Boise St could beat the Ducks, but Auburn’s defense can’t contain much of anything, let alone the Oregon offense.

You're completely misunderstanding what Kelly said, but you can live in ignorance over little misunderstandings if you want.
Kelly didn’t say “I really don’t know what officials can do … Cal was doing that…they basically waived the white flag.”
He said that if teams are faking it (“if” is a conditional word one uses when a thing is not a certainty, thus entering the subjunctive tense), then that is poor form on their part. He was saying that he doesn’t know (or doesn’t care) about how real or not the injuries have been for opposing teams (many of which have obviously been acting jobs, but that’s for another time), but he does think that if that is proven to be the case, shame on them.
So you should calm down, and next time get educated on the context of quotes and their connotations before snapping to judgment on people.

Seriously though, there is no need to demonize all us Oregon fans. I know this is sacrilegious, but I’m starting to sympathize a little with USC fans. I wonder if they are considered “assholes” because they get sick of people bashing them all the time. It seems like there is a LOT of Oregon hate lately, and then when we try and defend ourselves it just gets worse.
I guess USC and Oregon magically attract more rude fans than other schools. It couldn’t have anything to do with being their success, right? If you are willing to jump down Chip Kelly’s throat without a clear understanding of what he said, then I would be willing to bet you are making some bad conclusions about Oregon fans as well.

TLDR coming
It seems to me that there is a pretty high correlation between success on the field and bad manners in a program. It is hard to think of a winning program that has not gotten tagged with lots of bad publicity (even before you get to behavior of fans) – arrests, academic violations, poor sportsmanship, financial impropriety, etc.
If this phenomenon really exists, it is not like I have actually done anything empirical to check it out, I don’t know if it is because it takes bad manners to win (recruiting violations, recruiting bad apples, win-at-all-costs attitude, donor money floating around, academic tom foolery all can help bring in better athletes and let them focus on sports) or if it only the winners that get the extra scrutiny. Certainly there are losing programs that also have bad manners (recall Cal was sanctioned after a one win season), we just don’t hear about it as much. But I wonder if bad manners don’t also contribute to winning, at least in the short term.
Finally, I also wonder what it has to say about our culture that demonizing our opponents is so common, and done with such relish. Politicians and the guys who make money off politics have been able to exploit this tendency to characterize opponents, foster fear and anger against them, and then take that to the bank. I think they are great marketers – they recognize the clannish tendency in humans to address insecurities by attacking others. I wonder if the same thing is going on in sports, particularly college sports. Fans seem to be rooting against other teams as much as for a team. They seem to take it so personally because the nostalgia and representation wrapped up in their alma mater that they become boorish bandwagon fans when things go well and resentful sore losers when they don’t. In college sports, it seems like most of the money is made off developing positive associations with a school and the alumni – the more the team wins, the better the alum feels about the school (‘look at those winners, just like me, and they did it the right way, just like me’), and the more they get involved. It probably helps if the school is portrayed as some virtuous paragon, in contrast to the villainous rival, so tell me things that confirm my desired outcome and I’ll ignore the rest. In this regard, Coach Kelly seems to be playing the role of a mini-Belichik to the T: love him or hate him, he is generating passion.

I did start putting my elbows on the dinner table
As soon as the Ducks started winning.
Definitely a good take.
And I’d that a winning program tends to cause the worst fans to get a little louder. In lean years, the guys who act like they are actually on the field or the guys that get in opposing fans faces seem a little less likely to act up. When things start going well, these idiots get the confidence they need to do whatever it is they do.
Maybe I just have a good group of buddies, but I always try and judge things based on the people I know that went to different schools. We all love football and are passionate about our team, and whether or not they are winning does not suddenly change our personality and the way we treat visiting fans in our stadiums. I think we all teams have the d-bag element ready and waiting, and the success of the team is like a finger hovering over the launch button waiting to deploy them.

Clark’s teams have been universally dominant for the past two decades. Football is a much more even playing field.
