Max Zhang Not Returning To Golden Bears, Signed Contract With Shanghai Sharks
Jon Pastuszek of NIU Basketball (which covers basketball in China) tipped us off to the news.
Sina is reporting that Zhang has decided to forgo his final two years at Cal to sign a contract with the CBA’s Shanghai Sharks this season. Zhang, who had also been approached by Xinjiang, Shandong, Zhejiang in recent days, decided ultimately to sign with Shanghai because of the presence of owner Yao Ming and the team’s head coach, Bob Donewald Jr., who is also heads the Chinese national team.
Shanghai will a pay a fee to Zhang’s old club, Liaoning, in order to obtain his rights.
Zhang’s agent, Lu Hao, who also represents Yao Ming, has publicly confirmed the report: "This year he’s definitely staying in China, he won’t be going back to th NCAA because he’ll be playing in the CBA."
According to our sources, he was apparently offered more by Xinjiang, but settled on Shanghai for the above reasons.
We wish Max the best, and are glad that he was able to participate in Cal's Pac-10 title run. We hope he has a long and prosperous career. This leaves us down to only four returning players from last year's squad: Markhuri Sanders-Frison, Jorge Gutierrez, Brandon Smith, and Nigel Carter. EDIT: Notable oversight: Praise be to Bak Bak! Do you smell repeat?

This also leaves us with just a single Braun recruit left, Harper Kamp.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
interesting note, hopefully he finishes on an equally high note as his previous teammates

I wish Max the best of luck
On a recruiting note, this gives us another scholarship to use for next year. Wonder if we’ll use it.

1. Good for him. Always want to support an athlete living the dream. I hope he does well.
2. But I am bummed – I liked the concept of Max Zhang, and from I saw there was a lot to like: good guy, decent skills, made an effort, and the potential for all sorts of match-up problems for the other team. He played an important role in a couple of last year’s wins, and I thought he would contribute this year, even if he came back to school late.

wish Max for a great future
for Cal, it’s time for a new team. Monty’s team.
Everyone left from last year’s title team anyways. Max will forever be remembered as member of the Pac10 Champ squad, and it’s time to move on.
Don't know if it will be my lasting memory of him..
…but all I can think about right now is Louisville’s unscuccessful attempt to play Hack A Zhang late in the game during the 1st round of the NCAA tournament.

Shouldn’t it be Hack-A-Max?
That has more of a ring to it.

Well at least he won't waste any more schollie money.

While I don't agree with your characterization of a "waste"
It does free up the use of a scholarship for this season or next.

So soon you forget about Bak Bak?

but happy for Max

*sigh*
I’m going to miss cheering for Max to come out on ProBono’s Cal stream on Justin.tv. He never played a lot of minutes, but it was fun seeing him block a shot in the 2 minutes he played a game. I mean, just extrapolate that… IF he plays a whole game, that’s like 40 blocked shots a game! But I wish him the best. I think he realized his role in Cal’s future wasn’t significant and went for his dreams.
I wouldn't come back either
Given how Monty was using him, I doubt he was going to develop. There were too many times last year where we had no inside presence whatsoever and Monty refused to put in Max. True, he wasn’t going to score much or even rebound much, but at least he was a disruptor. He changed the way the other team had to run their offense. MSF was good for four fouls, two boards and an ice bath.
I’m pretty disappointed actually – Max had the ability to be a game changer (see Stanfurd and Oregon games) and he actually had a really good summer with the Chinese national team.
Would he have been a big contributor to Cal? Probably not this year, but the following season he would’ve been playing decent minutes – and two more years learning from Monty and playing against Pac-10 level athletes would’ve made him that much better a player here in China (aside from Steph Marbury and a handful of other imports – most foreign players here are from mid-majors and below)
better for Max, better for Cal
Monty can now move on and plan for the future rather than waiting and wondering what was going to happen in the 2nd half of the season.
Kind of like someone accepting a job offer but then leaving within a few weeks of starting….better that they turn the offer down to begin with. It gives Monty a little more ability to manage the team since Max turned down the offer before the season started.
Drinking the Kool-Aid. Pumping the sunshine. Livin' the dream. Go Bears!
