Pain Train is wrong about one thing, the defense got embarrassed plenty of times with Gregory in control.
Zack must have forgotten that away game against Tennessee
Hey what about that time against an average Maryland offense that put up a good amount of points?
Also, Zack had the good fortune of playing on Cal teams that had a functional passing attack and a dangerous offense that could score points or at the very least get a first down from time to time and string together a few drives to give the defense a rest.
Zack or Scott also weren’t on the field as long as these guys were due to an inept offense.. they should count their lucky stars they had a semblance of a balanced attack when they played…..
Wasn't Scott on those horrid Holmoe teams?
And Zack was on a team with an inept passing offense. 2008 was pretty tough.
What worries me is the Pendergast comments from Fujita. If pro players didn’t like him by the time they were done, I can only imagine what our guys will feel like at the end.

Zack was also on teams when Longshore was pretty good…..I’m puzzled though….did you put this up here because you like Gregory or dislike Pendergast? I thought you didn’t like us talking ill of our Cal Bears….just curious..
I put this up here because it was newsworthy
Two famous Cal linebackers not liking our current DC is something worth mentioning.

Two famous Cal linebackers who never
Played for our current DC. At the end of the day their opinions hold as much weight as an average fan.
All that matters is our CURRENT defensive players seem to like Clancy so I don’t really care what a bunch of NFL players think of our current DC. Maybe they didn’t like Clancy because he made them run laps or do extra hitting drills or he benched a few players.

That isn't it
The reason the NFL players didn’t like Pendergast was because his aggressive schemes were easily countered by pro coaches. The Chiefs defense was last in the NFL in 2009, and now they’re a top-ten unit with him gone. Arizona hasn’t really changed much since he left, but that Cardinals defense got burned a lot in their run-up to the Super Bowl.
Basically, defenses look dumber or worse off than they actually are. That has happened a bit since he’s gotten here (Nevada and USC were both atrocities).

I’m not trying to damn Pendergast, I’m saying that it’ll be interesting to monitor our defense’s behavior when we face adversity down the road and whether they’ll be able to bounce back from this game and any future setbacks.

First about Clancys stay in KC
First he only had one season at KC and had the difficult task of switching KC from a 4-3 defense to a 3-4 so of course they were going struggle due to the learning curve.
Secondly, KC had and still has a lot of young players, some of whom were not drafted to play in a 3-4 defense.
I think KCs defense was going to show improvement this season for the simple fact that this is year two in the 3-4 and some young talented players like Flowers, Tambi Hall, Derrick Johnson, Dorsey, etc getting more use to playing and knowing their roles and responsibilities in a 3-4.
If you watched the Chiefs last season, you could see their defense improving during the final four games of the season.

There’s no denying that Pendergast (with the Cardinals) was feast or famine. 9-7 and they are runners-up in the Super Bowl from the weakest division (arguably) in the league that season (2008)? He puts together some great games and then is completely hit or miss the next week. He had a great run that post-season though and got hot at the right time. Luck? I don’t know, but I was hoping (perhaps whimsically) that he’d channel the “triumphant” Clancy defenses on a consistent basis when he came to the Bears. He showed us the good against Arizona and ucla but he had a long week to prepare for UA (with a banged up Criner) and a bye week to prepare for ucla. He always got burned down the middle of the field in the NFL, but the general consensus was that if you bring the house enough you’re going to give up the big play. But it was also acknowledged that one or two big plays during a ball game wasn’t going to keep Warner, Boldin, Fitz, and company from still scoring enough to pull out a victory. I think the Cardinals led the league that year in scoring offense, which completely augments how one schemes for a game (like a pitcher pounding the zone with a 4 run cushion in the 5th) I know nothing about The Chefs of 2009, so I can’t speak to that. I don’t take Zack and Scott’s comments with a grain of salt but I am more interested in Scott’s initial comment than the rest of the exchange. Scott played for an aggressive DC last season and his comments weren’t meant to compare Gregory and Clancy as much as they were commentary on NFL observations. I think that carries significant weight.

I’ll buy that…….I am of the opinion that maybe JT isn’t hiring really effective coordinators or position coaches. You may not agree but you probably agree there has been a revolving door. I am not a Marshall or Daft fan but that is only from a naive fan pov. I wonder why JT seemingly hires guys who have been busts in other areanas instead of hiring more up and comers like a Genyk
I actually agree with you, but “up and comer” Genyk had a 15-42 record as the head coach of EMU. So he honestly could be considered a “bust in other arena(s).”
I dunno, at EMU they’d consider that Hall of Fame worthy. They’ve had one winning season in three decades. Ron English only got his first win as a coach this week, and he’s been there two seasons.

Last I checked I don’t know anyone that played for Pendergrast, nor have I spent my life playing football and doing everything that comes along with that, like breaking down film, the way they have. I get the point that they haven’t personally played for Pendergrast, and it’s something worth noting, but they’re definitely not ont he level of “the average fan” at all.

I would take our 2008 offense over what
We have had to experience over these last two years.

2008 QBs werent that terrible, compared to 2010. Both Riley and Longshore were serviceable. Personally I really liked Nate.
However, we had no receivers that year. Sean Young and Lareylle Cunningham started the first few games, then turned over to transfers Boateng and Tucker later in the season.
Best and Morrah had really good season.
Anyways, i know its not the point of the conversation but 2006 offense was awesome.
Can't feel any worse than the guys on
offense with Ludwig and Marshall.
Despite the two let downs by our defense this year, the fact is the defense has really carried this team so far this season.

I don’t know what to think about this. I didn’t have any particular problem with Gregory and felt he got more than his fair share of blame. But I want to be fair with Pendergast and give him a chance. I’d prefer the ex cal guys to either keep quiet or be more substantial with their criticisms. It kinda feels like high school gossip.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
I kinda think of it like you – it doesn’t necessarily seem like it’s appropriate for them to be talking about this in a public forum, especially since they’re professional athletes people might actually take notice of. More of a private conversation. Our generation still doesn’t have a very good grasp of what should be made public and what shouldn’t…..

Well hell...
…. I never wanted Gregory gone and I was cautious with Pendergast. I allowed my hopes to rise after the Ariz and UCLA game but yea..
In other words, Go Bears!
