Halfway point of 2010 season
At 3-3, we are pretty much halfway through our season and it is becoming apparent that we will only go as far as our offense will. When we can overpower a team with our running game (a la UCLA), we can cover for the weak QB we have. But when our running game is getting bottled up, we have to trust that Riley can do something.
At this point, I have to say that Kevin Riley is not going to get any better at QB. I thought he turned a corner last year, but he seems to have completely fallen off a cliff. I am a little puzzled that Tedford didn't bench him in the second half of the U$C game and at least give Mansion/Sweeney a shot as they could get some valuable time in during garbage time.
Here's my question-is it time to yank Riley for the other two and use the second half of 2010 to build for 2011? Or will the team be more competitive with Riley at QB and having us start out with unproven starting QBs next fall?

Bench Riley
I wnat to see what Beau Sweeney can do next week vs. Arizona state. I feel we can do more with Beau plus the sun devils would be a good team to make your first start against.
Aside from completely agreeing with Spazzy’s insight, I think the idea of benching Riley is a pretty bad one.
The main reason is it basically tells the team that the coaching staff has completely given up on this year. Despite how much promise Sweeny or Mansion or any of the other kids may have, does anyone really and truly believe that they give the team the best chance of winning? It’s pretty silly to think that any other QB has the experience or understanding to step in and be better than Riley right now.
Aside from that, a lot of the trouble on offense has Riley as a symptom, not the cause. All the dropped passes are not because of Riley. I can recall four beautiful throws he made against $C that were simply not caught, even though they were perfectly placed and the receivers got their hands on the ball. Also, how would any of the younger QBs be better when they’d also be running for their lives as time and time again the pass protection fails.
Thirdly, if the running game can’t even generate three yards, the other guys defenses will just be salivating at every passing down, and be looking for the kill.
The frustration Cal fans have at our offense is completely justified. Believing that changing the QB will do anything but make things worse is pure fantasy. If anything, the fixes need to start with the OL and pass protection, then move on to the receivers before it hits the QB. I personally blame Marshall. The OL play has continuously deteriorated since we lost Coach Mich, and it may very well be time for a change.

Tedford appears to have tied his wagon to Riley the rest of the way. I guess I am always taking the long term approach with the program, as maybe it would be healthy to admit what we aren’t right now-we aren’t a Rose Bowl team right now and need to figure out a scheme that will get us back on track in the long run.
Man
I just realized that we’re 3-3 with 3 high-likelihood losses looming ahead of us in Oregon, Oregon State, and Stanfurd. We’d better win against ASU, Wazzu, and Washington at least, if we want to have a good shot at a 6-6 season.
