ESPN's C. Mortensen: Pete Carroll to Seattle expected to happen; J.A. Adande says it's a 'done deal'
Update: J.A. Adande says he has inside knowledge that it's a a done deal. Not totally confirmed yet though.
Might as well talk about the rumor (I emphasize 'rumor'), considering it's the hottest sports story today and it affects everyone in the Pac-10.
'League sources tell ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen that the Seahawks are targeting longtime USC coach Pete Carroll as Mora's replacement. Carroll did not return messages, but a league source said Carroll is interested in the job and is trying to persuade Trojans offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates to join him in Seattle, as opposed to Bates pursuing the same position with the Chicago Bears.
Said another source close to Carroll: "You're about to see a big headline that shakes up the major college football word," in reference to the Seahawks' development. The Seahawks did not confirm Carroll as a leading candidate but also did not deny it.'

Coaching carousel -- turn turn turn.
Actually, the twittersphere is reporting that the Trojans would pursue Oregon State’s Mike Riley in the event that Carroll leaves for the Seahawks. There’s also speculation that the NCAA is heavily looking into USC recruiting which is why Carroll might be open to jumping ship. Let the coaching carousel continue. I’m still holding out hope that some stupid NFL team will pursue Harbaugh (Bills anyone?).
Riley already turned down the USC job in 2001. I feel he’s perfectly happy in Corvallis.

I thought he turned down USC in 2001 because he couldn’t get out of his contract with the Chargers. This seems like it’s probably a different set of circumstances, though yes Riley does seem perfectly happy in Corvallis.

He’s always quoting how he likes the fit and wouldn’t leave again. You know what they say, you can never go home again and again.
USC in 2001 was also not quite what USC is now. Inheriting that talent pipeline already in place, assuming there’s no sanctions, would have to appeal to any coach….

I dunno, Riley’s getting up there in years, plus he never seemed comfortable in SD… I would be very surprised if he took the job instead of continuing to gangbust up in Corvallis—the Beavers could be Rose Bowl contenders next year.

Yeah I’m not trying to speculate on whether he will or won’t, I have no idea, just saying, assuming there aren’t big sanctions, that USC is currently more attractive than it was last time.

But ...
Would Mike Riley want to deal with the headache of the scandal, investigation, and the incompetence of Mike Garrett?

I think he’s got his sights on the NFL. Having his bro upstage him is chomping at him inside. “Damn it, I’m captain comeback. Don’t you remember me?”
I could just as easily hate Harblow at USC. While I actually like the fact that Stanford football now has a pulse—at least as long as the Bears keep winning Big Games—the prospect of Jimmy at the helm of Troy would seems pretty entertaining.

Of course, the fact that any of them would be such an obvious hire would mean that Garrett would “lose” their numbers and call Bob Stoops instead.

Ok, let’s assume that Carroll leaves. The next questions would be:
1) Who does USC get to replace him?
2) Will this have any real impact on USC’s recruiting for this year? (If I were a big recruit I’d still want to go there assuming the new coach isn’t an idiot)
3) What are USC’s immediate prospects for next year?

Your usage of a generic reference term reminded me of the following:
Bonds withdrew from the MLB Players Association’s (MLBPA) licensing agreement because he felt independent marketing deals would be more lucrative for him. Bonds is the first player in the thirty-year history of the licensing program not to sign.109 Because of this withdrawal, his name and likeness are not usable in any merchandise licensed by the MLBPA. In order to use his name or likeness, a company must deal directly with Bonds. For this reason he does not appear in some baseball video games, forcing game-makers to create generic athletes to replace him.
Sometimes they would just refer to him as San Francisco Left Fielder.

So….assuming this happens, how does it impact Cal? If any Pac-10 coach takes the job, I think that means we should expect at least some drop off from that school (especially if it’s Riley and OSU). Also, I think Tedford’s shown he can compete annually with any program except USC – so any current Pac-10 coach at USC makes me feel comfortable Cal has a chance. Next, recruiting this year. I think the only USC commits we were close to the top of the list were Uko and Woods, right? So maybe we can reopen their commitments, but I don’t think any of the others were big Cal targets. Finally, the most important thing – can USC stay on top without Carroll? USC is USC – it has the tradition, it has the talent currently, it’s a nice private school in LA – it has lots going for it. Any coach should have all the help he could ask for in recruiting. However, Carroll has been unbelievably successful at USC, on a level no other program can really compare to. By default the program must go down. If it does….wel, for the first time in years, everyone has a shot every year to compete for the Pac-10 title, and that’s gotta be great news for all y’all who’ve been waiting for a Rose Bowl.
Also, let’s hope they get hit with huge sanctions and they fall off a cliff for it.
I think it’s safe to assume Tedford’s not on the list of replacements…
"We lose to Stanford in many sports, but if you want to make a Cal team quit, bring a weapon."

If Carroll leaves, Oregon will take domination of Pac10
unless Tedford actually shakes everything up this offseason.
Well, even if Oregon emerges as the best program in the Pac-10, I don’t think you can say they’ll be dominant, based on their track record. I do think since Tedford took Cal over, Oregon has established themselves as the #2 team after USC, but the margin over Cal and OSU isn’t very big.

~ Three Dog - Fallout 3
Quick Question
Is Carroll leaving USC, and possible sanctions against USC bad for the conference considering we are attempting to position and renegotiate our TV contract? If USC falls, we lose the conferences biggest draw.
In which case, Jeff Tedford is now on the clock, because USC in repose opens up the Pac-10 football race to new hopes, and new expectations. Tedford, the Cal coach, has had more expectations than hope in his time at Berkeley, but now the best explanation for why the Golden Bears haven’t won the conference may be gone for a while.
This assumes, of course, that Oregon isn’t going to become the new USC, the way Washington did the last time SC went on a break. But the point is that Cal’s string of eight-, nine- and even 10-win seasons will now feature a demand that they become nine-, ten- and 11-win seasons.
And that somewhere in there lay that Rose Bowl appearance Cal has waited a half-century to achieve.
Thus, the Carroll departure, if it isn’t just another empty rumor, lays more heat upon Tedford than on any other coach in the conference. More than Rick Neuheisel at UCLA, more than Chip Kelly at Oregon, and more than whoever gets the job Carroll vacates.
Tedford has the worst kind of resume for a fan base – the persistently winning coach whose best years came early. When you start your career at third base, people assume you should graduate from triples to home runs and stay there. Cal under Tedford has become a doubles hitter for reasons that extend well beyond the coaches’ offices.
But that doesn’t matter. Tedford is the face of the franchise, and that means the face of the Poinsettia and Emerald Bowls. As the face, he has to provide the spine, and eight wins is now barely cutting it in the minds of the customers. Without Carroll as cover, eight wins must become 10 or they’ll start to look like six, and six-win coaches don’t get to ponder their fate at leisure. They get to worry about it every day.
Until Carroll says yes, though, Tedford still has that glass ceiling with which to contend. Once that ceiling is gone, the conference is officially anyone’s, and Cal fans have been crying to be that anyone for years now.
To Tedford’s credit, he hasn’t ducked the heat brought upon him. But there’s heat, and then there’s heat, and it looks as if the microclimate that covers Memorial Stadium is about to become unusually tropical. There’s some serious day to be seized, and Tedford will have to be up to the task of seizing it.
"We lose to Stanford in many sports, but if you want to make a Cal team quit, bring a weapon."

Why do people even read Bay Area sportswriters? They’re so awful at their job. I mean, on one hand, I feel bad saying something like this because it is people’s welfare we’re talking about here…but really, guys like Ratto don’t deserve to have newspapers to write for, and there’s a good reason the newspapers are going out of business, and I, for one, am not sorry to see them go.
by Missing Barry on Jan 10, 2010 10:31 AM PST up reply actions
I just read Ratto’s article. I am not sure it if really puts more pressure on Tedford or not, as we all know that he is still dealing with inferior facilities in comparison to U$C.
I also think U$C is going to get hit with football sanctions soon too, so that could also impact their recruiting. Additionally, I could see U$C grabbing another Pac-10 coach (not Tedford plz), which could weaken that program.
Nothing changes. He has until 2015-2016 to produce a Rose Bowl—if he does he’s beloved and stays as long as he produces good teams, if he doesn’t it’s up to Sandy to decide.

It’s not like any of the ‘reasonable’ Cal fans gave Tedford any extra thought that USC might be a serious dynasty team who had won the pac10 title for many years, CONSECUTIVELY. Find another team in another conference that wins that many straight conference titles. No, Boise St. doesn’t count.
Tedford still has to take us to the Rose Bowl in the near future to meet the expectations he brought over the psat few years, but reality says nobody gave him a pass over the years that was something to the tune of “oh, 2nd place is good enough b/c of USC.” It’ll still be very hard to win the bid to the Rose Bowl. The doors are just slightly more open now, but we still gotta earn it.
