Cal (6-6, 0-1) continues its brutal early Pac-10 road trip with a trip to Pauley Pavilion for a matchup with the Bruins (9-4, 2-0). Hit the jump for a quick preview of another tough matchup for the Bears!
vs.
Successful young coaches Nikki Caldwell and Joanne Boyle face off in a critcal early season matchup
The Bears will have their hands full with one of the many up-and-coming teams in the Pac-10. UCLA is coming off a road sweep of the Arizona schools, highlighted by an impressive 18 point win over ASU. UCLA controlled the team many believed to be the 2nd best team in the conference from start to finish, and have placed themselves firmly in the Pac-10 race. Bruinsnation is understandably excited about Coach Caldwell and UCLA's hot start.
UCLA is a very balanced team, with four players averaging between 10 and 13 points per game. 6'1'' Freshman Markel Walker has been the Bruin's top performer with 12.9 points per game and 8.5 rebounds per game. Juniors Dorrena Campell and Darxia Morris handle most of the ball handling and average 10 and 11 points per game respectively. Recent Rutgers transfer Jasmine Dixon has only played in 6 games for UCLA but is already putting up nearly 13 points and 8 rebounds a game.
The LA road trip is a critical point in the season for Cal. 3 straight road games against 3 of the better teams in the conference is a dangerous way to start the season, but strong performances and 2 wins in LA could be a huge boost for a young team. GO BEARS!

8-6 UCLA
Heater is a bruising, powerful player, but she needs to learn to not pick up unnecessary fouls

15-12 Cal, 7:20 left
9 turnovers for Cal and 7 for UCLA = an ugly first half.

19-18 Cal
The first team that starts taking care of the ball will probably win. Refs are letting both teams play very physical defense

22-21 UCLA at half
Cal really played poorly over the last 4 minutes of the half, and 15 turnovers is something that has to be fixed. Some of the turnovers on both sides can be explained by the amount of contact the refs are allowing, but much of it is simply poor play.
UCLA would probably have a bigger lead, but Dixon was out most of the half with an ankle injury and Walker was clearly out of sorts dealing with a nose injury that’s forcing her to wear a mask.

Good to hear that we’re hanging in there…this is a tough stretch to open the year.

They could easily be ahead by 5 points or so.
Clarendon had to sit for the last 5 minutes. Hopefully with her back the offense gets a little better.

30-28 Cal
The game is inexplicably being called much tighter to Cal’s benefit – the Bears have been getting to the line.

33-30 UCLA
Cal just had one of the most frustrating offensive possessions of all time, with two wide open 3’s missed by Grief, a missed put back, a ton of offensive rebounds and the total inability to get the damned ball into the hoop.

My stream just went goofy, but it’s danger time for Cal. They need to get it going on offense or this game could get out of reach. And as I’m typing Cal throws the ball away for another turnover.

instead of score updates, I’m just going to do turnover updates. Cal is up to 21.

What’s your analysis of Cal’s problems? Just that the team is really young and hasn’t jelled yet? Or something more serious?
Snobby Chick - Senior Division
I haven’t watched every game, but from what I’ve seen they’re just a bad shooting team that stays in games because they’re fast and strong so they play good defense and control the boards.
For some reason that I can’t explain the senior guards have played really poorly, especially on offense. Grief’s playing time has really plummeted.

45-35 with 6 minutes left
Cal’s defense has fallen off over the last 5 minutes and that’s prevented a comback

4 minutes to play
HUGE 3 from Lexi to cut the deficit to 6!!!
And a UCLA turnover! Make a run, Bears!

It is really nice that Ucla has this video stream, like Cal is doing. Are all the Pac-10 schools doing that this year?

I believe all women’s hoops streams are free where provided by the home website.

Cal’s FT shooting is preventing a comeback, UCLA’s FT shooting is preventing a runaway.

My stream died for the last time, but the game’s over anyway. Here’s the turnover honor roll:
4: Gray Lawson, Clarendon, Pierre
3: Vital, Caldwell
2: Heater, Brandon
1: Stallworth
0: Grief, in 6 minutes
23 in total

57-46 UCLA final
Cal missed a golden opportunity for a big road win, as UCLA’s star freshman Markel Walker only scored 1 point in 14 minutes as she struggled with a nose injury.
Cal played great defense for 30 minutes, but UCLA scored 23 over the last 10 minutes of the game by hitting mid range jumpers and consistently getting inside and drawing fouls.
The key stats:
Cal shot 28% from the field and 50% from the line and had 23 turnovers. I don’t know how many possessions Cal had, but I’m going to make a leap and guess that Cal’s offense wasn’t particularly efficient today.

Good stuff norcal
Might want to use this info in the USC open thread for a UCLA recap.
