AAAAAAAARGHHHHHHHH.

Serious question: why is Markhuri starting? Seems like we play a lot better with Amoke/Boykin.

Painful

You hate to lose games like this in the Pac-10. Especially to FUCLA.

Time for another glass of wine.

by Lincecum Cain Then Pray For Rain on Jan 6, 2010 9:53 PM PST reply actions

Anyone grading this above an F obviously didn’t watch Cal lose this cripple fight. Considering how shit-all horrible Ucla is this year, what does that say about us? And no, I don’t buy the injury argument. That’s a lame excuse.

Absolutely disgraceful. Easily the worst fucking loss and most embarrassing performance of the Monty era,

UCLA played about as well as they possibly could in the second half, while we couldn’t buy a bucket (minus Amoke) for minutes. The fact that we stayed in this means that it was better than an F performance.

by boomtho on Jan 6, 2010 9:56 PM PST up reply actions

Disagree

Our poor shooting was not just because it was a bad night. It was due to lack of focus. Three things I noticed during the game:

1. Body language: By the end of the 1st half, and absolutely by the time we went up by 12 the respective body language told me that Ucla was determined to continue to play hard and that they were not intimidated by the Bears, while Cal looked as if they had no respect for Ucla and expected to cruise to a win.

2. Effort: Too often Cal seemed a step slow or at worst, disinterested, as if they could not comprehend the scenario of losing. It was as if the players already believed the game was done, and they were anticipating the headlines in the papers.

3. Crowd: Was there even anyone there last night? On TV it sounded as quiet as a church. Where the hell were the fans and the noise?

This was one of the very few times I actually stopped watching a game. Even when we are getting our asses kicked (in any sport), I watch to the end. But when I see a team show that little effort, heart, desire, or interest, I get too disgusted to watch.

The only positive thing that came out of this game is that I now know what to expect from this team. Barely over .500 in conference play and a flame-out in the first round of the NIT — if we are lucky enough to get an invite.

F. Absolutely an F. No way this gets better than that. Just disgraceful.

Whose Axe?

Pretty much nails it. The best was seeing that 7% on the stat screen for 3 pointers.

But watching the game you’re not mad that it was 7%. It was 7% on open looks combined with a complete lack of effort in the game.

We lost by 30 to Missouri last year. But obviously a close overtime loss where the team overcame a bad shooting night to be competitive is more embarrassing.

2 half flat

What the hell happened in the second half. Cal played really bad displaying poor defense. Big loss and let’s hope we can recover from this and get a move on the season. UCLA is not the same caliber as the Bears. They beat themselves and need to get going mentally.

Two sides of basketball like most other sports, offense and defense.

We got our points on offense b/c UCLA was giving it to us.

Defense was just shitty today. Combine the fact that 1) they scored enough points to beat us in the 70’s and 2) they shot TERRIBLY from the line, it’s no excuse.

by nickle on Jan 6, 2010 10:03 PM PST up reply actions

We lost by one point in a game where we went from shooting 40% of our threes to 7%. Therefore we got fucked by probability. QE motherfucking D.

by norcalnick on Jan 6, 2010 10:38 PM PST up reply actions

You gotta turn statistics in your favor in life. That’s what winners do. Warren Buffett doesn’t invest in Index Funds. He goes and finds investments that beat the averages. Ben Howland’s defenses beat the average defense. He’s not an offensive Buffett, but perhaps a defensive Buffett.

If you run a business and get average results, your boss is going to think you are average. If you have an off month in production and tell the boss it “just wasn’t your month”, s/he may not be very sympathetic.

Look, Tedford is great. But even he had to come out and say his 8-5 record this year is not good enough. Tonight was not good enough. Plain and simple. You can’t lose games like tonight and just shrug it off. This was a bad loss and will hurt the team for a good while. You’ll see. Bad taste in mouth! Ain’t gonna be shrugged off. This will hurt for a month.

by concordtom on Jan 6, 2010 10:45 PM PST up reply actions

Do you not realize that it is just. one. game. You use Tedford saying an entire season was not good enough as support. This will be brushed off.

You gotta turn statistics in your favor in life. That’s what winners do.

I…just don’t really know what this means. Winners (at least in the game of basketball) are the better players, usually.

I thing with sports, and this applies to every major sport, is that random chance factor in more than people are willing to admit. The ground ball that finds the hole between short and 3rd. The punt that takes a weird bounce and stops at the 3 yard line. The batted pass that goes right to Michael Roll. The brilliant soccer shot that hits two posts before bouncing out.

Does that mean that Cal deserved to win this game, that they purely got unlucky? No, not in the least. The Bears earned the loss today. But that doesn’t mean that Cal isn’t the better team. And it doesn’t mean that Cal isn’t the best team in the conference, as every team but Oregon has a loss. Is Cal actually the best? We’ll see.

In 2007, UCLA lost to a bad Cal team in overtime. They ended the season in the final four. One game does not a season make. Most importantly, Mike Mongomery has provided multiple decades of proof that he knows what to do to fix things, if they indeed need fixing.

by concordtom on Jan 6, 2010 10:37 PM PST up reply actions

That was tough to swallow

The team needs to bounce back in a big way against USC on Saturday. Sure, Jorge would likely have been the difference maker had he played in today’s game but that’s really not an acceptable excuse.

UCLA definitely played really well in the 2nd half (except for free throw shooting), but our defense was rather porous (and people are not in position for rebounds). When the offense is not going, the defense energy still need to remain high.

Finally, on that last Boykin basket, it’s not clear to me that Smith was passing to Boykin and not Randle. Even knowing the result of Boykin’s shot, I would probably still prefer Randle shooting an open 3 instead.

1) Who was the player of the game? Why? For Cal, maybe Jamal Boykin because he made that huge bucket at the end, caused the late deflection, showed some emotion, and was the lone Cal player crashing the boards for the last ten minutes of the game.

2) What most impressed me about the Bears was their ability to find the open man underneath the basket.

3) What the Bears need to most improve on is their rotation on defense.

4) Who was the most impressive player on the other team? Jerime Anderson

5) How do you see Cal matching up against USC? Haven’t really watched ‘SC play, but I generally like the Bears’ chances against any Pac-10 team this season.

1) Who was the player of the game? Why?

I’m going with Amoke and Theo, who both kept us in the game offensively. Amoke made a few questionable plays, but I think that’s mostly youth. He’s clearly active and I think he has a great future. Theo’s just freaking smart and calm. Low grades for everybody else, though.

2) What most impressed me about the Bears was their _______________.

Cal didn’t really do anything great today, but I thought their passing from the perimeter to the key was pretty good.

3) What the Bears need to most improve on is their __________________.

3 point shooting? That doesn’t seem right. I’ll say closing out on 3 point shooters.

4) Who was the most impressive player on the other team?

Roll, although credit to Nelson for toughness inside, especially for a freshman

5) How do you see Cal matching up against USC?

I haven’t seen UCLA play much. Please just win the effin’ game. That’s all I ask. Home sweeps cannot happen to Pac-10 winning teams.

Questions

1. The player of the game was Robertson, Amoke, and Smith. Player of the moments Randle for tying the game up with a huge three and Smith for the brilliant pass to Boykin and of course Boykin for hitting the big shot to give Cal the lead.

2. The most impressive part to tonight’s game was Smith his ability to exploit the lack of defense by Dragovic to get Amoke going was huge.

3. Biggest thing the Bears need to work on is perimeter defense, they get lost on screens instead of fighting over the top of them. Also, need to stop committing silly ticky tack fouls.

4. Most impressive player on the team was Smith his ability to pass the ball was key for the Bears tonight.

5. I think this loss will open the eyes of the Bears and they’ll come out firing on all cylinders. I do not see a repeat performance of tonight and they will make more threes than they did tonight as well.

by concordtom on Jan 6, 2010 10:49 PM PST up reply actions

I don’t think our guys are bad on the screens. Or we just don’t know if they’re bad. They might be. But today didn’t show anything.

The “pick and pop” offense they were running, that’s UCLA’s gameplan this year on offense by the lone fact that they have no other offensive threat. Their game is shooting, and their guys aren’t athletic enough to create their own space so all it is is staggered screens to get their shooters open (roll particularly).

Our guys knew this coming into the game. But more than not being execute their defense, they just didn’t even bother trying. It was a lack of effort today. Complete lack of effort.

The turning point of the game was when we were up 12 or so and they cut it to 6 right away. We have to go for the kill and put even more points on and try to embarrass the team. Not go up 12 points and say pretty please hoping they’ll just give up. Some teams will, but most teams at this level won’t. The fact that we were up by 12 was surprising considering how poorly we played. Very lackluster effort today (remember all those offensive/defensive boards UCLA would somehow come up with even though our guys had positioning? Cal’s usually a pretty solid rebounding team).

For as much I like Amoke for his knack on the offensive end, I just think he’s a stupid player when he’s on defense. He picks up WAY too many stupid fouls off of slight bumps and movement when the other guys are shooting and usually gets the other team into the bonus/1and1 situations super early. If UCLA had shot SLIGHTLY well at the free throw line, this game woulda been sadly out of reach.

The only thing that’s going to keep these Bears from their pac-10 championship goal is themselves. If they’re not going to work the entire game on both ends of the floor, then they deserve every loss that’s going to come. Equally, if they put in the work then they’ll earn those wins.

Player of the game?

How about Howland. His game plan took the groove out of the Bears and they were out of rhythm and missed shots. Normally, we get running and make easy layups in transition. That puts our groove on. We lost the groove thru his defensive game plan, then missed shots, and thus lost the game.

I would like to also nominate Rollonubears for the quote of the night, which I shall repeat right now. Rollon gets the blogger of the night award:

Boomtho nailed it with the pick and pop offense

Bruins kept on running that shit over and over, set screens that our smaller guys just kept running into. Wide open shots, wide open 3s for Roll and Drago over and over.

There’s a lot more to this loss, but if Cal had been able to guard the 3 point stripe better, they would’ve won. Because UCLA cannot shoot their GODDAMNED FREE THROWS HOW THE HELL DID WE LOSE TO A TEAM THAT SHOT 58% FROM THE LINE MOTHERFUCKER.

Email: bearsnecessities@gmail.com

by Avinash Kunnath on Jan 6, 2010 10:48 PM PST reply actions

I wouldn’t say there’s a huge amount more.
1) Hit open 3’s. Cal shoots even half their normal percentage and this doesn’t get to overtime.
2) Close off the defensive glass. Malcolm Lee grabbed two huge ones toward the end, and Honeycutt, Nelson, and even Drago (IIRC) got in on the act.
3) Contest 3’s. Self explanatory.
4) Be more patient against man to man. We were pretty good about looking for good shots against zone but we rushed a little more against man. MSF had an ill-advised move, and PC drove and threw up a lefty prayer late in the game.

by boomtho on Jan 7, 2010 12:07 AM PST up reply actions

Sorry guys,

it was my fault. In the total of 35 seconds I listened to the game on the radio, UCLA took 3 shots, and made 3 3’s. I turned it off.

I turned it back on for another 5 seconds, and they popped another 3. I turned it off again.

So what can you say?

by Spazzy Mcgee on Jan 7, 2010 12:06 AM PST reply actions

I was going to vote, but the post didn’t even tell me the score of the game, so I didn’t even know who won. C’mon, need more information!

Reading the comments it sounds like it was just one of those days nothing goes in. There’s not much you can do about it. Oh well, move on to the next game – we all know this team can shoot, so those shots that didn’t go down against UCLA will go down next time. Sometimes sample error’s a bitch.

by Missing Barry on Jan 7, 2010 8:09 AM PST reply actions

I was there last night

First off, the crowd. I’d say Haas was about 3/4 full, which is pretty impressive for a Wednesday during Winter Break. That said, there was a very solid fUCLA contingent and the Cal fans who were there (besides the student section, which was okay) didn’t seem loud or energetic at ALL until they showed a few signs of life toward the end of the game. There were a couple of “Go Bears!” cheers in the first half that were absolutely pathetic and embarrassing. I guess maybe everyone was expecting to cruise to another easy win.

Secondly, the team. I think they were expecting to cruise to another easy win also, but they had a bad shooting night so if they were going to win they needed to work for it a bit, and they weren’t willing to work for it. They were up by like 12 late in the 1st half, but they essentially stopped playing defense and started looking at the clock the last few minutes of the half. If UCLA had gotten their last shot off half a second earlier, they would’ve been down by only 6 instead of 8 at the half.

Look, I’ll accept that a bad shooting night can happen to any team every now and then, even at home. I also think the free throw disparity was slightly unfair (though also due in part to the fact that we didn’t take the ball inside often enough and UCLA did) but I think this loss is really indicative of our worst flaws as a team: 1) Our willingness to too often settle for bad jumpshots; 2) Taking too many plays off on defense; and 3) Not having enough of a killer instinct, and thus letting teams back into the game.

I think that by the end of the game, our kids did show some heart to battle back and almost win, but it’s really inexcusable that we were even in that position.

I also want to know why we didn’t A) pound the ball inside more with Max and Markhuri – all UCLA had inside was Nelson, and that didn’t stop them from going inside and drawing fouls, and with their terrible free throw shooting they needed every foul shot they got. B) Why was Boykin taking a looong 3 from almost half-court was our best option at the end of overtime? Couldn’t we, for example, have put Max and Markhuri near the basket, randle and christopher at the 3 point line, and see if we couldn’t get a layup or something?

by atomsareenough on Jan 7, 2010 9:08 AM PST reply actions

MSF tried to post up once. It was reallly ugly….he literally threw the ball up hoping to make contact, it careened off the glass like a billiard ball. We didn’t run any more post ups after that.

1) Who was the player of the game? Why?

Michael Roll – made a bunch of open 3’s that he got because Amoke wouldn’t close out on him, and generally didn’t do anything stupid. Also, he made the winning shot.

2) What most impressed me about the Bears was their tenacity late in the game, I guess. Too little, too late, though. I was also impressed with the fact that they, unlike fUCLA, weren’t particularly prone to making stupid mistakes. On the other hand, fUCLA made up for their stupid mistakes with effort, and the Bears’ lackluster effort negated their superior fundamentals.

3) What the Bears need to most improve on is their killer instinct. When they’re up big, they need to close the door on the other team.

4) Who was the most impressive player on the other team?
Like I said, Roll. Here, since I gave “player of the game” to fUCLA, I’ll say that the most impressive player on our team was Theo. Didn’t have his 3-point game on tonight, but his clutch free-throws kept us in. Also, I’ll mention that I haven’t seen a full game of quality play from Patrick Christopher in a while.

5) How do you see Cal matching up against USC?
I don’t know. We ought to win, though.
