Bowl Game Blowout! Open Thread for the FedEx Orange Bowl
FedEx Orange Bowl

Iowa Hawkeyes (10-2) vs. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (11-2)
Initial Thoughts: I'd rather be at Bucks/Nets.
Most Awesome Player: Jonathan Dwyer, Georgia Tech RB (221 attempts for 1,346 yards and 14 touchdowns)
Most Awesome Sponsor: Playmaker. Because Michael Irvin is more than just the guy who would rather have one perfect season than three Super Bowl rings.

The Line: Georgia Tech -4
Over/Under: 50.5
Chad Millman's blog says: Any game involving Georgia Tech is a difficult puzzle to figure out because of its offense. Right now Georgia Tech is getting all the love and Iowa is being discounted as a team that doesn't deserve a BCS bowl, but I do like Iowa at this number. It is getting its quarterback back from injury, which I think will help, and I think the number is a bit inflated because it is a Big Ten team. I made this game three.
Accuscore says: Georgia Tech 27.3, Iowa 26.3
ESPN says: Iowa 28, Georgia Tech 24
Who you should be rooting for: The triple option!

Why did I pick a team that has Dave Wommack for a defensive coordinator? Why?

I didn’t think of it! All I could think of was “oh, Big Ten team in a BCS bowl” not that that even applies this season since the Big Ten are going to finish with 16 quintillion 10-win teams this year.

I just want to be different with this answer.

Even the most committed Gregory-hater thinks “oh well, could be worse” when watching Georgia Tech on defense.

Hey look! Georgia Tech’s Triple Option is getting manhandled in a bowl game again!
It's dat Woo Woooooo.
Navy’s similar triple option opened up a can off whoopass on Missouri last week. The problems for Georgia Tech are, A.) Iowa is a very good defensive team (it wasn’t just luck that won them all those games… well, not JUST luck), and B.) Georgia Tech doesn’t have very good horses up front.

Yes, I consider this. But I’m guessing Georgia Tech doesn’t want to be facing teams with shitty defenses (and thus worse season records) in the bowl games… They faced LSU last year. What will happen if they face a Florida-type next year?
It's dat Woo Woooooo.
Hopefully by next year it won’t be such a fucking mismatch.

I forgot that GT had Alamar II on special teams to complement their miserable defense.

Bowl cup standngs:
ACC – 3-3, one to play.
Big 12 – 4-2, one to play.
Big East 4-2
Big Ten – 3-2, one to play
Mountain West – 4-1
Pac-10 – 2-5
SEC – 5-4, one to play
WAC – 2-2
So on the one hand, no one really won, and hopefully that will distract from the fact that the Pac-10 emphatically lost.

c’mon, don’t disparage him like that. It’s a fair point, we STUNK in bowl games this year. He’s saying it’s a trend, just that we had a shitty bowl season.

Were we ever not called the Pac-1? People were calling the conference the Pac-1 when it was the Pac-8. (I just made that up.)

Fantasy note-to-self:
If Wommack is retained for next season, pick the #1 running back of whoever is playing GT on any given week.

Watching the bowl officials try to dance onstage is the highlight of this halftime show. Fox has really delivered with tonight’s and last night’s broadcasts.

Uh hey dudes this is a 3 point game in the 4th quarter and Georgia Tech’s offense has finally started clicking. It’s pretty rad imo.

The Georgia Tech Band
is playing Stanford Jonah…
http://www.calband.berkeley.edu/calband/media/calsongs/jonah.html
Noticed that also
I used to switch Cal’s music on NCAA for PS 2 because those j**k offs didn’t add the fight song until NCAA 08
Also – Was the band also playing “All the way turned up?”
Jim Rome fans will understand

Oh well it’s up with the White and Gold
Down with the Red and Black
Georgia Tech is out for the victory
We’ll drop the battle axe on Georgia’s head
When we meet her, our team is sure to beat her
Down on the old farm there will be no sound
Till our bow-wows rip through the air
When the battle is over, Georgia’s team will be found
With the Yellow Jackets swarming around.
Whose domicile? OUR DOMICILE!
After we played them in the 20s, we got “The Cardinal Be Damned”, they got “White and Gold”.

From a dude's twitter
A source on the Stanford staff confirmed to me that DE/special teams coach D.J. Durkin will join the Florida staff as linebackers coach.
Noel Mazzone will be named Arizona State offensive coordinator, according to ASUDevils.com.
It's dat Woo Woooooo.
This is Noel Mazzone (a derided figure in the SEC iirc)

Looks like a winner to me.
It's dat Woo Woooooo.
Mazzone’s been in at ASU for a week or so. Strikes me as an “eh” hire. Erickson isn’t doing anything to give ASU an edge, he’s just getting a guy he’s comfortable with.

The Big Ten goes 4-0 in their top 4 bowl games. Sheesh, I’m going to like it when they revert to their usual dreary postseason mean.
