Bowl Game Blowout! Open Thread for the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl
Tostitos Fiesta Bowl

Initial Thoughts: I understand the rationale that if these are indeed the third and sixth best teams in America, this is a hell of a matchup. The problem is that a lot of people still don't believe that they are the third and sixth best teams in America and they may have been better served thrashing Iowa and Georgia Tech in separate games. I'm just saying.
Most Awesome Player: Lots of guys to choose from, but it's probably Kellen Moore, Boise State QB (254/392 for 3,325 yards, 39 touchdowns, 3 interceptions)
Most Awesome Sponsor: Let's just give this to Frito-Lay, the makers of Tostitos.

Over/Under: 54.5
Chad Millman's blog says: This game surprised me. I made this game TCU -2.5 because I think Boise's victory over Oregon is more impressive than any victory as far as caliber of opponent that TCU has. My ratings are largely based on margin of victory and quality of opposition and that made me think this game was a shade under a field goal. I think this point spread is way too high.
Accuscore says: TCU 32.4, Boise State 24.9
ESPN says: TCU 24, Boise State 20
Who you should be rooting for: For a competitive game? I'm still crushed after the Eagles' loss.

I was really looking forward to this game until I saw it was on Fox. Ugh, I hate Fox’s football broadcasts.

I don’t even know the name of the tool behind the studio desk, but he always comes off to me as utterly ignorant about football, like one of those frat guys who used to con females in their college classes to help them back into a degree off of daddy’s money, then end up with a midlife crisis at 34 because they can’t get past the “glorious” days of their youth.

I am just saying throwing motion isn't everything
Their throwing motions may make you cringe but at least they complete more than 54% of their passes.
I didn’t say anything about Moore as a quarterback. I said his throwing motion makes me cringe, which it does.

I have the odd distinction of leading the group in correct picks, but in points I’m onlt 11th and probably out of contention for #1. Just the same, go TCU/Central Michigan/Bama/Georgia Tech!

I would have been solidly in second if ECU had beaten Arkansas (how could their kicker miss 3 game-winning field goals in the final two minutes/OT?!). At least I’m in 4th in AtQ’s group and 1st in most correct picks. If nothing else, maybe I can reclaim AtQ in the name of CGB.

I have been really impressed with Boise State DC Justin Wilcox
he was our LB coach for a few years, I believe 03-05. He is going to be a HC sooner than later and I think Washington State should make a run at them once they fire their current HC.
I’d weep tears of joy if Giorgio or D’Amato could kick a ball nine yards into the end zone like that.

There was a facemask so the TCU kicker kicked from the 45.

Does anyone else think that Boise State player who was guilty of the facemask should have been thrown out of the game? The announcers barely mentioned it, but the play was completely over, the TD had been scored and the players were well out of bounds, when the Boise guy deliberately reached up and yanked the receiver’s facemask as he was trying to get up. I thought it was really outrageous.

TCU’s passing offense is kind of terrible. All hitches and go routes, no slants or crossing routes or posts. Either they made a conscious effort to stay away from the middle or they just have a giant hole in their scheme. /dudewhodoesn’tactuallyknowwhathe’stalkingabout

Wow, so I stopped watching after the justin.tv feed dropped… Boise St. did a punt fake on 4th and 9 from their own 33 in the 4th quarter of a tied game? Whether you call it a good decision or not, theoretically speaking, there’s no way the Cal coaches would even consider doing something so ballsy for half a second.

Yeah, I don’t want Tedford taking needlessly stupid risks, but I’d prefer if he was more of a calculated risk-taker. The way I see it, unless you are one of the true top-flight programs like USC or Florida or Texas or even Ohio State, where your team is just so talented that they can execute their normal scheme and dominate most anyone else they play, then I think your team really have to have a few tricks up your sleeve that you can whip out at a moment’s notice, especially when you’re playing a team that is better than you. When you’re an underdog, you have to be able to catch your opponent off guard and take advantage.
Now, I know we aspire for Cal to be one of the powerhouses that can just dominate, but we’re clearly not there yet, so we should know when to take a good risk to increase our chances of winning against superior opponents. It’s not like Tedford should have any undue concerns about his job security, so he shouldn’t be afraid to take a high reward risk when the situation calls for it.

I think we have our #1 defensive coordinator target if Gregory doesn’t come through next year… especially since we’ll only have to offer BG money to Wilcox, methinks.
It's dat Woo Woooooo.
I like Wilcox he coached LB's at Cal from 03-5 and played at Oregon
I just think he will be a HC after next season at some school.
yes, that’s why I think he’s an obvious choice. Fairly or not, I don’t think any BCS conferences will take a coordinator from a non-BCS Boise before they take Chris Petersen, so he could be Boise’s next guy in line (I’ve heard OC Brian Harsin is a hot commodity too). More logically, he’d be a DC at a BCS school as a member of Petersen’s staff, which could end up being a lateral move.
It's dat Woo Woooooo.
I could see Washington State going after Wilcox after next season
The only issue I have with Wilcox is he runs a 4-3 and I really like that Cal runs a 3-4 so that would be an issue.
He did a great job shutting down some really good offensive teams in Oregon, Nevada, and TCU.
Dude’s only 33 years old and college ADs are conservative about that kind of thing. I doubt it.

Most college AD's are more conservative about breaking the bank for an established
coach than they are about age. Taking a young coach means you don’t have to pay him as much money.
For a school like Washington State, UNLV, SJSU that doesn’t burn as bright in the spotlight could take a chance and see if they strike gold.
Besides I think things are kind of trending towards younger coaches. Josh McDaniels is only 33 years old and he coaches an NFL team, same goes for Raheem Morris.
Tedford was just 40 when he came to Cal, I believe Harbaugh was 41 when he got the HC job at USD.
The NFL is another thing entirely. They were also ahead of the college curve on realizing “hey, black guys can coach too!” (Though the BCS schools are making a belated attempt to catch up; congrats to London, Strong, Phillips, Gill, and possibly McNeil.)
Kiffin and Sark are young coaches of old money schools, so there’s that, but I don’t know how many under-40 coaches you’re going to find in the FBS.
