Cal Sports Recruiting Thread: Countdown to LOI
Previous threads: January 2010, December 2009, November 2009. Decided to put this one in because it's about to get fast and furious in terms of updates.
drub12 counts down the biggest targets left.
So, by my count, the rest of the uncommited prospects big board looks like this:
DE/DT J.R. Ferguson: (I think we have at least a chance. Probably between Cal, LSU, and FSU)
OT Arie Kouandjio: (I think it will come down to Cal and Bama)
DE Gabe King: (UO leads, but I think if Tosh works his magic, Cal still has a chance)
S Sean Parker: (Probably little to no chance, especially if we stopped recruiting him)
WR Markeith Ambles: (Very small chance, if we can convince him to visit 1/29)
DT Jeff Whitaker: (Doubtful. Probably Auburn or Georgia)
RB Lache Seastrunk: (Probably going to be a Duck, but I think we still might have a small shot)
ATH De’Shawn Beck: (If he pulls his grades up, I think we have a really good shot)
TE Zach Swanson: (Haven’t heard anything since he decommitted from $tanturd. I really don’t know much else about him)
WR Kenbrell Thompkins: (JUCO WR who decommitted from Tennessee, I haven’t heard anything, but we have offerred and we might have a chance)
OLB Aaron Harris: (Haven’t heard a ton, but I think we might lead)
Sounds like we’re out of it for Owa, Anthony Jefferson, Ricky Seale, Bjoern Werner, Christian Thomas, and Josh Shirley. Unless there are guys I am forgetting (let me know if there are, looks pretty thin across the board. Let’s hope for the best.
Go Bears.

Anthony Barr
According to scout.com, Anthony Barr, the 6-4, 225-pound athlete from Los Angeles (Calif.) Loyola, has verbally committed to fUCLA over Notre Dame.
He likley will be a running back in college, which gives fUCLA three top RB commits with Malcolm Jones and Jordon James. With Barr on board, maybe one of the other two will reconsider. James had Cal at #2, and Jones had the Bears in the top 5 for his commitment.
Let’s hope this affects one of them.
In the end, everyone just wants to be in LA.

Great if he’s visiting Cal… Any idea why he might be wavering on the national champs?

Parker?
Any ideas what’s the deal with Parker? Did we stop recruiting him just because of realizing it was a long shot anyway, or is there something else behind this?
might have run out of db spots this class?
…then how would you explain safety Keenan Allen coming for a visit? =)
making a spot open
for Allen. Cal is showing commitment to Allen that they are serious. Keep in mind…Allen was roomate with Chris Martin.
Martin has started to develop a strong friendship with his roommate this week Keenan Allen. He has also enjoyed playing on the same defense as the Alabama-bound safety.
"Keenan is the best player out here. He has been off the chain," Martin said. "I have never seen a guy like him. It looks like he is beat but he knows he is not beat and now I am never worried that he is beat. With him playing behind me, you feel like you can just play up and pressure a lot."
http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1037181
Sounds to me like he’s heading out to Cal to figure out how to get Martin to decommit and go to Alabama….

From everything I’ve heard about him so far, I have faith in Martin. He seems to be very solid on his commitment to Cal. Besides, Allen is coming to visit Cal, it’s not like Martin going out to visit Alabama.

ESPN projects him as a wide receiver. We have a definite need there, though it could be argued we also have a need at safety, since everyone at that position is unproven. Nonetheless, we shouldn’t get our hopes up too much.

I disagree with you and think that is a lame comment. I would debate the reasons why, but we’d need a better forum. I grew up here and enjoyed living elsewhere for a time, and would recommend the same to kids from here. But if you are from a different part of the country, and don’t consider Cal and Berkeley a neat place to go to college then you are ignorant, in my opinion.
Things that other youngins consider important in college, like “coeds” is really overrated.

Navy send you there? I only spent a couple of weekends in that part of the state, I lived in Richmond myself – much more of a southern vibe (it was the capital of the Confederacy, after all), and you get more of the Southern girls, and I’m a big fan of them. Of course at my school it was mostly rich Northeastern kids, but what can I say, a private school where a lot of rich kids go does attract good looking females…
But then again, it also brings out a lot of snobby/stuck up attitudes, I guess. I just avoid those kinds of people.

A friend of mine is from the Newport News Hampton area – he was in high school at the same time as Aaron Brooks (Saints QB), Michael Vick, Ronald Curry (Gatorade HS Player of the Year in Football – maybe also so in basketball I forgot) and Allen Iverson.
He said he saw all 4 play football, and there was no question that Allen Iverson was the best QB of the 4 of them.
I can totally believe that. Dude’s taken such a pounding, he’s built for the gridiron. Could see him being a lot like the hip hop version of Favre.

Yeah
You hear stories like that a bunch. Jim Brown was supposedly better at Lacrosse than he was at football.
The city of Berkeley “not so much”? I’d have to disagree. As far as college towns go, Berkeley has a lot to offer. I realize it’s not for everyone, but there are a lot of kids who either don’t mind or are looking for a dynamic, diverse, eclectic experience. Berkeley, and the Bay Area in general, offers that.
You can think my comment is lame, but then you go on to say that things that other youngins consider important in college is really overrated. I think at the end of the day, any debate is irrelevant, because we both agree that kids don’t always make rational choices.

To Reiterate a Few Points
Cal is no longer recruiting safety Sean Parker of Narbonne. Parker is considered one of the top 10 safeties in the country and Cal was believed to be one of his finalists.
http://www.ibabuzz.com/beartalk/2010/01/21/football-recruiting/
I exchanged a couple of e-mails with Gabe King’s coach at South Eugene High School, Travis Johnson, who says King is still deciding between Cal, Oregon and USC.
http://www.ibabuzz.com/beartalk/2010/01/21/football-gabe-king/
According to Scout predictions, only guy we have a chance with is Arie who they have going to either Maryland or Cal. Other notables are King to Oregon and Ego to Miami or Oklahoma.
GOLD OUT MOZAMBIQUE!
I looked through that list was surprised at how off some of those predictions are/will be IMO. I wouldn’t put much stock in them.
If I had to guess, I think we tab Ego and Arie and think we have a decent shot at King as well. I’m usually pretty pessimistic about which guys we get but I have good feelings about those guys.

Hard to see how Ego would go to Miami. They already have 26 verbal commits and couldn’t make a scholarship spot available for Arie.
Story about Kenbrell Thompkins was that he wanted to transfer to Oklahoma after Kiffin left but couldn’t. They have 29 verbal commits and couldn’t make a scholarship spot open for him either.
So… Ego is ours by default, then? I’ll take it!

2/3 star WR Kaelin Clay of Long Beach Poly is visiting Cal this weekend. He’s the #53 WR according to Rivals. With offers from Portland State, Utah State, and Northern Arizona, he’s probably favoring Cal (at least, he should be if he knows what’s good for him).
Whose domicile? OUR DOMICILE!
![]()
Me thinks he runs track.
Clay is an under-the-radar prospect with a nice blend of speed, quickness and acceleration. He possesses below average size and bulk at this stage, but is a smooth, fluid player with the ability to stretch the field vertically. He plays in a conservative scheme where he does not get many…
UCLA and Oregon are interested, but haven’t offered yet.

BI is reporting 4.40 40yd dash & 10.7 100m time for Kaelin Clay.
“A lot of people wonder why I don’t have a lot of offers since I was so important to my team, but I think a lot of it was because we had a down year,”said Clay. "6-6 for Poly might as well have been a losing season.
“We had a young team. We lost all 11 of our defensive starters. And with us losing three of our first four games, we were seeing a lot less scouts at our games than usual, so I think that had a big impact on recruiting. But everything happens for a reason and it ended up working out well.”

I really like the LBs we have so far. Martin will play on the outside at Cal, and he is a rushing beast. The guys we have (except possibly Wilkerson, who might need a little more seasoning) should all contribute within their first two years on campus.

I don't know if it is that clear cut
Our 2005 crop of linebackers were awesome, we had 3 primo players and two productive players:
Desmond Bishop
Zack Follett
Anthony Felder

Mickey Pimentel
Eddie Young
Gabe King, DE (Eugene, OR)
Lots of Gabe King rumors. It’s still just Oregon and Cal to the wire here from everything reported, by anyone who knows that’s not named Gabe King.

hopes aren’t high…but it’s nice to outlast SC…if he picks Cal I bet he does so in part to avoid any of the NCAA requirement inquiries.

Hopefully he’s like the other LBP WR we had.
Though this begs the question: why wasn’t he recruited by other schools? It’s not like anyone who plays at Long Beach Poly is “under-scouted”
In other words, Go Bears!
Supposedly we were targeting him even before Harper’s decommit. His highlights don’t look bad at all. He’s not necessarily a immediate impact player, but if he can be developed/coached, etc., I’m sure he’ll be a fine contributer.
Kaelin Clay
Senior receiver Kaelin Clay (Long Beach, Calif./Poly) has committed to the in-state Cal Bears, ESPN’s Greg Biggins reports.
Clay made an official visit to Hawaii last weekend and was scheduled to visit Fresno State. Utah State also extended a scholarship offer.
“I had a great time on the visit and when they decided to offer me a scholarship, I basically committed almost on the spot. I told myself before the visit that if Cal offered and I was comfortable there, I would go ahead and jump on it and that’s what happened. I talked with Coach (Jeff) Tedford and he’s a real good guy. They have some big plans for me and I’m excited to be a Bear,” he said.
Clay caught 24 passes for 459 yards and four touchdowns while also rushing for 548 yards and six more scores this fall.
Hey seeing how this is a Countdown to LOI, can you throw the official date of signing day into the post, Avinash, for all our knowledge?
Totally unsubstantiated rumors on BI swirling that Gabe King has all but dropped Oregon. Cool if true but I’ll still wait and see before I get too excited.

MoragaBear seems like a good dude and oftentimes there is great info on there, but a lot of the douchnozzle “fans” on there seem to relish every opportunity to put down Cal’s coaches, decisions, and players. I think anything written on message boards should be read with heavy skepticism. Most of the negative stuff is written by trolls claiming to be fans or insiders. It’s actually funny to me when the trolls write long posts trying so hard to sound credible but fail miserably.

Cal gets another commit
From espn.com:
5-foot-11, 180-pound senior wide receiver Terrance Montgomery (Los Angeles/West Adams) has committed to Cal, ESPN’s Greg Biggins reports.
“I’m a Bear,” he said. “I’m so excited to be going to Cal with all their prestige and tradition. Signing day is just a week and a half away and I was starting to get a little stressed out. No one else had offered a scholarship or even a visit and then all of a sudden, I got the call from Cal about coming up this weekend.”
Montgomery caught 42 passes for just over 700 yards and 13 touchdowns this fall, earning first team all-city honors.
He posted an electronically-timed 4.86 40-yard dash, 4.42 20-yard shuttle and 28.7-inch vertical at the Los Angeles Nike Combine prior to his senior year.
Thanks for the crazy fast update! If this is true, Montgomery must be the double secret WR recruit because evidently the recruiting services haven’t even heard about him yet.

Tevin Carter (Santee) & Terrance Montgomery (West Adams Prep) played in the same Division in the LA City Section. Since we scouted Carter, it’s entirely possible that the coaches also saw Terrance in person and were comfortable making the offer based on his performance on the field.
Dunno the MikMo story, but didn’t we offer Aaron Rodgers based on what Tedford saw while scouting Garrett Cross?

Will Pac-10 close a good recruiting season with a flourish?
The biggest names remaining in play among Pac-10 teams on the ESPNU 150 are:
DE Jackson Jeffcoat (Arizona State & $C)
OL Seantrel Henderson ($C)
DE Owamagbe Odighizuwa (Quacks, Oregon State, fUCLA)
WR Markeith Ambles ($C)
RB Lache Seastrunk (Quacks & $C)
S Sean Paker (Cal, $C, Washington) – Cal no longer recruits Parker (JO).
S Dietrich Riley ($C, fUCLA)
DT Ricky Heimuli (Quacks, Oregon State, fUCLA, Washington)
DT J.R. Ferguson (Cal)
JR
Cool. JR is only interested in Cal in the Pac 10.
Keenan Allen, S (Greensboro, NC)

Allen and [Zach] Maynard [brother] will not be at NC State today (1/25/10). While it is still unclear of their intentions, sources indicate that NC State could be out of the running for the pair of brothers. Obviously nothing is set in stone, and things could change. But this is the most recent development.
RE: UNC recruitment of Zach Maynard + Keenan Allen
Current UNC assistant coach Allen Mogridge was on the coaching staff at Buffalo that recruited Maynard to come in an play QB. When Maynard expressed interest in transferring to Chapel Hill, Buffalo saw too much reason for concern in allowing the transfer seeing as how Mogridge was now part of the Tar Heel staff. Simply stated, Buffalo felt that there was reasonable concern that Maynard’s interest in UNC could be tied to Mogridge potentially tampering with the player while he was still on the Buffalo roster. Therefore, if a transfer was to happen, it wasn’t going to happen to their preferred school, UNC.
So that led to the list of Clemson (Allen’s original #2), NC State (No official visit as of 1/25/10) and Cal.
Really nice article.
In a live chat today, Mike Farrell of Rivals notes that Cal will have an in-home visit with Allen/Maynard Tuesday night. I really hope that Tosh is on that flight to North Carolina!
Farrell also claims Cal looks very good for King, Arie K ends up at Alabama and JR Ferguson at FSU or Miami.

Markeith Ambles, WR (McDonough, GA)
There’s already rumors about Ambles committing to $C. No confirmation yet.
An $C fan pleading w/ Kiffin to back off Ambles because of pending NCAA investigations:
So, be careful Lane Kiffin.
Be damned certain that Markeith Ambles doesn’t bring more than a soft pair of hands and exceptional speed if and when he signs with the Trojans.
While we may need his talent, we don’t need any suspicion with the football program.
Haha, I’m sure Lane is lurking the message boards for recruiting advise. Do these people realize who $C hired?

not sure if people are aware of Ambles's back story
but GeorgiaBoy on WeAreSC poses the following “hypothetical” regarding Markeith Ambles’s character, something that has to be done hypothetically because there is nothing concrete due to Ambles minor status, but seem to be common knowledge among recruiters and followers of recruiting:
For the sake of discussion and this is just hypothetical…….I wonder, if your wife was a school teacher and he slapped her, would you be so willing to let him in then? I wonder, if you were his coach and were mentoring him and he slept your wife would you be willing to let bygones be bygones. I wonder if he sold cocaine to your daughter would you be one of those kind souls you mentioned? Just asking…..
I know some are curious about the decision to bring in K. Clay and T. Montgomery, but Cal can do a whole lot worse…
Wait what?! Ambles slept with Mrs. Kiffin?!

apparently there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence out there to support the claims made in the statement above… and of course, Ambles didn’t sleep with Kiffin’s wife, it was referring to his high school coach
there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence out there to support the claims
I think by definition claims like that require way more than anecdotal evidence for them to be remotely supportable. Stuff like this is why I find recruiting creepy.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Yup, college recruiting deals with kids who between 16 and 18 years of age, and oftentimes it is rightly characterized as “creepy” the lengths fans go to get the inside story. As it pertains to Ambles, he was a minor when these and other unsavory acts were perpetrated, so you’ll never find anything more than an extensive web of indiscretions that, if nothing else, paints a criminal image that caused Pete Carroll, Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, and Mark Richt to rescind their scholarship offers… thank goodness Lane Kiffin’s kind and forgiving spirit at Tennessee and now SC found a place for this lost soul.
Recruiting is definitely creepy, especially the random people who are into it. What I’ve never understood is why these high school kids bother to talk to anyone about their recruiting who isn’t part of a program that’s recruiting them. Like, why talk to Biggins at ESPN, or rivals, or scout, or whoever else?
Man, I want more Gabe King updates!
Like the whole thread that started – I mean, I know you guys were joking, but at times it really seems like certain fans really are trying to find out as much personal info about kids as possible and follow their every move/thought. And when people project where they’re going to go like they somehow know the kids thought process…it’s just weird and strikes me as trying to get too personal…

Yeah, I don’t honestly care what he had for lunch, but like… someone claimed to have some insight on what the deal is with him and Oregon, and if he’s honestly not considering the Ducks anymore, it’d be cool to know what changed and if it means that our school is looking like a more probable destination. I’m sure we’ll find out what’s going on eventually, but he’s a great prospect and we’re all naturally excited about the possibility of him playing for Cal. Obviously it’s up to each kid to make his own decisions about his own future and there’s a line to be drawn about leaving them alone to make their decisions in private, but with recruiting becoming more national and with the additional publicity given by these videos and interviews with rivals, ESPN, etc… we’re getting used to having a bit more light shone onto the process.

Chris Martin, DE (Aurora, CO)

(via media.scout.com)
Martin has been named to the Parade All-American team.
Keenan Allen, S (Greensboro, NC)

(via media.scout.com)
Keenan Allen, five-star safety from Northern Guilford High School in Greensboro, N.C., is the top-rated player in the Southeast by Scout.com. The Tide commitment visited Clemson this past weekend and was expected to visit North Carolina State on Monday, but the trip was canceled. Allen is taking visits with his half-brother, Zach Maynard, a quarterback who is transferring from Buffalo after head coach Turner Gill left for Kansas.
All sorts of speculation is out there about the visits, but Allen is not taking calls. He is supporting his brother, as expected, and the two will possibly keep a visit to Cal this weekend. Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has offered Maynard a scholarship.
Since then, Allen took an official visit this past weekend to Clemson with his brother, and recently canceled a visit to North Carolina State this upcoming weekend and has been rumored to cancel a visit to Cal as well. Many Clemson people are taking the approach that it is a guaranteed that Allen is a package deal with his brother, and that the cancellation of the visits effectively seal the deal that he is going to wear the purple and orange.

Kyle Boehm, QB, Archbishop Mitty in Cupertino (Class of 2011) was offered
Things continue to heat up for quarterback Kyle Boehm (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty). Just a week after landing his third and fourth scholarship offers from Wyoming and Arizona State, the 2011 signal caller picked up another big offer close to home.
“I just got offered by Cal,” Boehm said. "Cal came by my school last week and talked to my coach. Then I called up coach (Jeff) Tedford on Saturday and he told me I had a scholarship offer from them.
“I was pretty pumped up, he told me I was the first quarterback they have offered this year from my class. I still want to take my time with my recruitment and I’m not looking to make an early decision. I just don’t want to limit my options by doing that but I’m definitely excited about the offer from Cal and I’m looking forward to riding out the rest of the process to see where it takes me.”

Heck, I went to the Lynbrook Homecoming game a while ago and was trying to make noise when we were on Defense. Unfortunately, no one else was being loud so it was a little … embarrassing for the Lynbrook fans.
Dude Lynbrook was my high school from 2002-2006. You don’t have to tell me about how we are. Not many people go to the football games because well 80% of the school is Asian who’d rather study or do the student government whatever it was called.

Diggin' deeper into Golden Recruits' personal best 100m Track & Field time
Sr
Charles Saseun (WR) – 10.47 (California State T&F Championships prelims)
Dash Oliver (RB) – 10.63 (Stanford Invitational 03/27/09)
Both Saseun & Oliver are currently on Track & Field scholarships at Cal.
Jr
Tevin Carter – 10.56wa (CIF-State Prelims 06/05/09)
Kaelin Clay – 10.65wa (Moore League Finals 05/08/09)
Adrian Lee – 10.88 (82nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays)
Trajuan Briggs – 11.10 (L.A. City Section Prelims 05/21/09)
Terrance Montgomery – 11.42 (LA – Southern League Finals)
Montgomery’s personal record time seems somewhat deceptive. He placed 2nd in the meet it against Tevin Carter:
Prelims
Tevin Carter – 10.98 (1st)
Terrance Montgomery – 11.43 (2nd)
Final
Tevin Carter – 11.04 (1st)
Terrance Montgomery – 11.42 (2nd)
Therefore, looking at these comps, I would think that Montgomery is most likely as fast as Lee & Briggs. Saseun, Oliver (if they decide to try out and walk on), Carter, and Clay seem to be closer to Vereen in terms of track speed.
Terrence Montgomery...
is now our highest rated WR according to ESPN. Even better than Tevin Carter. So to all you naysayers out there, what say you?!!?!??!?!?!

In Tedford We Trust
I am on record for questioning this guy, but only to question. I would hope that anyone else posting (and reading) on this board realize that we know only a fraction of each kid’s story and these posts are purely speculative.
I trust JT and his staff. If they think he’s good enough, then I love the kid!
Yes, you questioned the recruit but that’s only normal due to the info that was out there at the time. You didn’t rip the guy nor look down on him based on inaccurate info at least, like some other places that passed him off.
I would hope that anyone else posting (and reading) on this board realize that we know only a fraction of each kid’s story and these posts are purely speculative.
Exactly. I wish there were more folks that would be patient and gather the facts. There are recruits and families that read the boards, and in the end, it just makes posters and our fanbase look stupid when jumping to conclusions.
What if you are omnipotent and omnipresent? Then, how much can I criticize Tedford for recruiting?
President Emperor Warlord Of The Sun!
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
It saddens and scares me to think that recruits and their families take much stock in what we have to say about them.
Bottom line, if you’re a recruit reading this, all you have to know is that if your skills are there, JT will play you. Except for QB & punter, all positions had opportunities for meaningful playing time for more than one player.
This is indicative of the flaws in the recruiting sites, really. I remember reading about it in the Orgeron book, too. That if the big teams like a Florida or USC goes after a player, the recruiting sites will up the stars on the player. They figure if USC sees something in the player, there must be something special about them.
Prolly what happened is ESPN saw Cal offer this guy and said “Hmm, there must be something good about him, make him a 3star.” So, USC can make a guy a 5star, we can make them a 3star. Tevs!
President Emperor Warlord Of The Sun!
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
then how come....
tevin carter is only a 3 star and lower ranked than him….tevin carter had an SC schollie as well.
to add, certain schools obviously get more respect than others when it comes to talent evaluation. The powerhouse schools are the ones that pursue the top talent who have developed early enough to star in pre-season camps and combines. The top schools are also the ones that frequently get early commitments, so they needn’t dig deep for the late bloomers or under-the-radar talent (which is the reason why I have come to respect Coach Tedford and the Cal coaching staff so much in the field of recruiting). I mention this, because Scout and Rivals usually release their final Top 250 or 300 lists in the middle of January, so that all the four- and five-stars are well-established before NSD. Legit but unheralded prospects like Montgomery get the shaft, precisely because the USC’s and Florida’s of the world never entered into his recruitment…
Interesting. I wonder how it is this guy didn’t have a SINGLE offer, even from a smaller school like Utah State or Northern Arizona a la Clay.
Still seeing discrepancies on his size. I’ve seen as big as 5’11", short as 5’7". I’d guess the latter, given his lack of offers.
Maybe that’s why he wasn’t ranked on ESPN or Rivals…..because he’s really a basketball recruit at center?

Looking at the HLs (HT ttglang15), Montgomery doesn’t look or play @ 5-7. I’d assume he is closer to the 5-9 range.
The odds were stacked against Montgomery with respect to gettin’ offers. West Adams Prep is not well known. Montgomery’s height/weight/track speed aren’t eye-catching. The additional combine data didn’t help him at all.
I’m somewhat curious about Montgomery’s QB Karrington Jones after watching the HLs. Anyone know if Jones is catching on anywhere?
He’s also now listed as a three-star by Rivals. Scout still has him at a one, but given the other two I’m think they probably haven’t gotten around to reviewing his highlight tape yet.
I guess the coaches know what they’re doing after all.
Terrance Montgomery Quotes
“Tevin [Carter] and I played Pop Warner together from age seven all the way till high school,” said Montgomery. “We actually won a championship together that first year, too. We’ve been the best of friends. He’s really the guy that got me interested in Cal.”
“Terrance is a good guy,” said Carter. “He has great hands and is a team player. You have to keep an eye on him or he’ll go crazy on you. I can’t wait to play with him again.”
The 3 star Montgomery has an uncanny ability to stop, start, change directions and make people miss -skills that are ideal for punt returns as well as receiving.
I’ll take “great hands” guys any day!

Players are limited to 5 official visits (per school, I believe), which allow the school to pay for accommodations, tickets, food, etc. They can take as many unofficials as they like, but they pay for everything out of pocket.
There are probably more regulations I’m not taking into consideration, but that’s the gist of it.

Wow we're really doing good in the defensive side of things
Really odd for a non-USC Pac-10 team to do so. I attribute this to Tosh, Tedford being aggressive (!), the 3-4 D, the fame of Alualu, Syd, and Follet and of course Bob Gregory (!!).
In other words, Go Bears!
Syd is workin’ it at Senior Bowl:
Syd’Quan Thompson, CB, California
The Bears’ star has created quite a stir with his exceptional play during the North’s practice sessions. Thompson’s combination of cover skills and toughness is rare, and he started to evoke memories of Antoine Winfield at the position. While some scouts are still concerned about his size deficiency, Thompson’s knack for making plays on the ball and delivering punishing hits during drills has him creeping up draft boards across the league.
the number of times syd’s size has been a problem the past two years:

Just keeping tabs.....
Our commit list:
On offense:
WR Kaelin Clay, 5’10" 175 Long Beach, CA
WR Tevin Carter, 6’3" 190 Los Angeles, CA
WR Terrance Montgomery, 5’9" 180 Los Angeles, CA
TE Jacob Wark, 6’4" 240 Portland, OR
RB Trajuan Briggs, 5’11" 192 Van Nuys, CA
OT Alex Crosthwaite, 6’5" 303 San Diego, CA
OT Geoff Gibson, 6’5" 315 Las Vegas, NV
C Chris Adcock, 6’3" 282 Mesquite, TX
QB Austin Hinder, 6’5" 180 Steamboat Springs, CO
On defense:
MLB Dave Wilkerson, 6’3" 238 Danville, CA
MLB Cecil Whiteside, 6’3" 220 Newport Beach, CA
MLB Nick Forbes, 6’0" 224 Frederick , MD
OLB Chris Martin, 6’4" 240 Aurora, CO
S Michael Coley, 6’1" 200 Hyattsville, MD
CB Adrian Lee, 6’0" 190 Dallas, TX
Obviously we’ve got some spots to fill at OG, DE, and DT. We’ve also got a bit of youth at those positions right now, but picking up some of the prospects would fill those spots:
DT Ego Ferguson 6’4" 270
DE Gabe King 6’4" 250
S Keenan Allen 6’3" 195
Seems like Arie, another OT, is a long-shot. So unless there are some lower-rated or unrated OG prospects out there that we haven’t offered yet, we’re not going to fill all the needs with this recruiting class. Which isn’t criticism, just observation.

Agreed. Do we even have a prototypical LT for next year? We seem pretty set at guard (assuming MSG’s healthy) and at Center (Galas and Brazinski should at least give us some solid depth), but I’m concerned about LT. Schwartz didn’t do so hot there his first year, although perhaps that’s changed.
Random question: why are “tackles” on the outside on offense and in the middle on defense?
Thinking about the list and going through some of the reports regarding our OL recruits, we ahve some very solid additions to this class even if Arie doesn’t come. We just have to hope they develop well.
Also, Keenan Allen would come in as a WR i believe.
We’re also in the market for Kenbrell Thompkins, a top JUCO WR. If both he and Keenan Allen commit, we’d have 5 WRs and someone would likely decommit or move to CB/S if possible.
Regarding the OL, even though both Crosswaithe and Gibson are listed as OT, I project that Gibson would end up as a OG on the Cal line.

Seastrunk to Oregon
Yikes. Him in that offense=madness.
A source close to Lache Seastrunk tells SI.com the Temple, Texas running back will verbally commit to Oregon Wednesday afternoon.
Considered one of the nation’s top running back recruits, Seastrunk was originally considered a USC lock. But the departure of former Trojans head coach Pete Carroll led Seastrunk to re-consider his options. The source said Seastrunk settled on Oregon in early January, around the time he played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
Seastrunk, a top five national running back recruit, also considered Auburn, LSU and Memphis, but settled on Oregon because of the comfort he felt during his official visit and the fine football facilities in Eugene, the source said. The prospect for early playing time was also a factor.

I think that offense is shut-downable if the rong qb is running it. Is that a fair opinion? If the QB can’t run but can throw (or vice versa), that’s a problem. It appears to me that it requires an uber rare player at qb for the offense to go.

Dominate the offensive line and you can shut them down.

Why would Seastrunk want to go to the Quacks?
This is like $c a couple of years ago when they had all those highly rated running backs and only one football to run with. A lot transfered loosing seasons and not playing much.
The Quacks had two good Freshmen backs last season and now Seastrunk? Maybe one will transfer to Cal.
Or like how UCLA has 3 top RB recruits this year?

There’s also another Coleman Edmond (ESPN, SI, CBS Sports) on the fUCLA roster.

I was debating with shadw about this earlier, he seems to think it might mean we struck out on another high profile guy given the limited number of scholarships we have for this year. I’m curious if the coaches are being a bit more cavalier since: A.) we could use another option in the near future and B.) locking down a scholarship for 2-3 years is lower impact than 4-5 years.
I’m guessing there might be some issue with the receivers we have now. Don’t want to speculate too much, but we might need every one of these guys to contribute in the near future.

another option is that one of the current recivers on roster is switching positions. Thinking of it in terms of class balance, Charles Satchell would make sense because he’s going to be a sophomore this upcoming season—that would fit the 2-3 year timeframe of an incoming JC contributor. I had in my early depth chart graphic posted on CGB weeks ago that I believe Satchell will be moved to safety, but that’s just a hunch. We shall see.
Can you post your graphic here?

This was awhile ago and obviously a super early look with no special insider information. The fullback position is completely up in the air, and some of the current and not-yet committed players who might appear in future editions could include Gabe King, Keenan Allen, Nick Forbes, Charles Ragland, and Dominic Galas. I might try to do special teams, but the returners are almost purely trial-by-fires and difficult to prognositicate depending on staff confidence of player ability to make good decisions handling the ball.

IF it’s true… I wonder if it’s something he did or (I think this is far more likely) some sketchiness discovered with his booster/former alum host/landlord in Eugene.
it’s very possible that the recruiting may have soured because of that housing situation, but again, if both the quacks AND $C both backed off this close to LOI day, i can’t help but start to formulate conspiracy theories…
"I am the God of Hellfire, and I bring you... Fire!"
Weekly Whispers, rivals.com
DB Keenan Allen – To stick with Alabama or join his brother, Zach Maynard, at Clemson – or possibly Cal? A package deal to Clemson is gaining momentum, and we’ll see if Allen and Maynard decide to take the long trip to Cal. Right now it appears family has the edge over his current commitment, and the trip to Cal is on this weekend.
DE Gabe King – King was down to Oregon and Cal, but apparently it’s all Cal now – as it was earlier in the process.
DE J.R. Ferguson – Even Ferguson doesn’t have a clue where he’s headed. The hunch here is that he ends up playing in Florida at either Florida State or Miami. He had a great visit to FSU last weekend, and Miami gets the last shot this weekend. LSU can’t be counted out either, while Cal and Notre Dame trail.
OL Arie Kouandjio – Alabama leads over Cal with USC getting the last visit this weekend. Look for the Tide to roll with this one by Signing Day barring something unforeseen.
LB Chris McCain – McCain is committed to Oregon. However, Cal is the surefire leader for his ex-teammate Gabe King. The Bears are also now very much in the mix for Keenan Allen. A flip to the Bears isn’t out of the realm of possibility.
Interesting comment on McCain… but between the limited number of scholarships and the fact that this LB class is stacked with four guys who’re rated four stars or better by most of the recruiting services, do we even have space for him?
After this last WR pickup...
How many spots does that leave availabale for us… That kinda worries me…

Jeffrey Whitaker, DT (Warner Robins, GA)
No surprise here.
Four-star defensive tackle Jeffrey Whitaker (Warner Robins, Ga.) is now only considering Auburn, Georgia and Miami-FL, ESPN affiliate Web site InsideTheU.com reports. Cal and North Carolina have been eliminated.
“Georgia is a pretty down to earth place and they have a really nice campus up in Athens,” Whitaker said. “It’s a nice place to play some college football and they’ve been recruiting me since sophomore year. They have some connections and some people that I know pretty good.”
“Auburn is about the same as Georgia, they’ve been recruiting me for awhile and they’ve been straight up with me through this whole process.”
“Miami is a team that’s on the rise just like Auburn and Georgia,” he added. “They have some great talent down there so they have a chance to be even better next year.”
Whitaker is scheduled to announce his decision Monday Feb. 1st during a 2 P.M. press conference at Warner Robins HighSchooSchool.
Jeff, I really think ur making a bad decision. Good luck tho.

King would be a fine pickup for the Bears and have not heard of any reason why he wouldn’t. I think some of those ducks prospects are seeing how oregon’s football program is becoming scum (Boise St. game, kicker getting mugged and players stealing computers) and don’t want to be apart of it.
I really don’t think its fair to call the Oregon football program scum. A little undisciplined maybe, but they made one hell of a turnaround after what was a horrible way to start the season.

The Oregon program is all class. You are right. There’s nothing wrong with kicking a guy in the back during a punt return in 2006. Absolutely nothing questionable about diving late at Longshore’s leg in 2007. Move on, nothing to see here. Blount punching a guy because he talked smack to another team and couldn’t back it up. Classy. Need I go on? And that’s only the stuff seen on tv. There’s a lot of shady deals that go on behind the scenes.

Keenan Allen, S (Greensboro, NC)

(via media.scout.com)
THE BIG TICKET: There’s always some late drama in recruiting. And with Signing Day now less than a week away, the biggest question for Alabama’s class continues to be: What is Keenan Allen going to do?
Allen, a five-star receiver/defensive back from Greensboro, N.C., committed to the Tide in November but continues to keep options open because of his half-brother, current college quarterback Zach Maynard, who left the program at Buffalo and is now searching for a new home.
As for Allen, he’s still committed to the Tide. But from the sound of it, Saban may ultimately have to invest one of those precious few remaining scholarships for Maynard in order to land Allen, who many consider the Tide’s top prospect currently committed.
So is Allen worth dropping another wanted recruit to get him? Perhaps a better question: Is any one prospect worth that for a program that just won a national championship?
This entire class doesn’t hinge on Allen, but he’s clearly a key component. That’s why the good folks at BamaOnline.com are offering multiple daily updates on the Allen situation at this point, though even site editor Tim Watts notes that right now “It’s a toss up and a very tough decision.”
Allen and Maynard have already visited Clemson (which is offering places for both players) and are expected to visit Cal this weekend.
But before that, Alabama assistant coach Bo Davis is expected to visit Allen’s family tonight (Thu, 1/28/10), which could bring an answer to how Maynard might potentially fit in with the Crimson Tide.
The two prospects plan to announce together Wednesday morning, which leads to another question: If a player is “committed,” what is there to announce?
So if we have a shot at Allen, does that mean a scholarship for Maynard, too?

Virdell was one of the best CBs on the west coast in high school, but turned out to be a bust. They were a package but were talented high level prospects.
We had another package deal that year, Philip Mbakogu and Robert Jordan. Mbakogu was our best high school DE recruit during Tedford’s tenure (maybe still) and Jordan was the really low rated guy. Mbakogu was pretty good when he played but he developed some freak knee issues and had to retire. Jordan wasn’t regarded very highly and ended up starting 30+ consecutive games.

Terrance Montgomery, WR (Los Angeles, CA)
From MoragaBear:
The Good -
he [Montgomery] was measured at 5-10/185 at Cal last weekend and he runs a 4.5 forty. He was all-LA city, which says a lot. His film is very good. It shows a very quick and shifty wr with very good hands and excellent acceleration and cutting ability. He’s obviously a playmaker.
The Bad -
Terrance and his family are pretty upset about the comments they’ve seen on our board [BearInsider] and others and feel extremely disrespected, so he’s reluctant to talk right now. He also feels that he was portrayed in a desperate light in Biggins’ story and feels it wasn’t representative of their conversation.

Because it’s unfair for fucking morons who don’t know jack shit about football and are self-proclaimed recruiting experts to criticize and insult a recruit who they have seen no highlights of at that point. Let the kid catch a pass, run a route, make a block, and get acclimated to the team and university before writing him off and making fun of him based on the limited and inaccurate information that was available at the time.
Ummmm yeah….welcome.
Here is Montgomery’s 40. He’s since shed 50 pounds.
Carter is legit but the last two guys should be walk ons. Welcome to the hot seat Daft.
frankly, he’s not a top talent. he lacks ideal height and speed. and seeing how we missed on the better WRs and had another 2 WRs decommit, it points to say we’re dropping the ball bigtime on this position.

people forget
that BI and CBG are the top two Cal football fan sites. They are big, public forums (although they don’t feel that way) that everyone reads, including recruits and their families. If I were a recruit, hell, I’d read up on me too. I’m not advocating that people censor themselves or spout off nothing but rainbows and sunshine, but people need to understand we live in a different era, where anything you say can and will read, copied and pasted against you.

there are also people who are very aware of these facts, and post misinformation or pose as fans for the sole purpose of misleading recruits and pissing off the fanbase (trolls). which is why, if you are a recruit, i would either take everything you read on any internet source with many grains of salt (preferably on a margarita, unless you are underage, in which case use the salt on some french fires) and only believe what coaches are telling you, or ignore the internet altogether, which will only make you a happier person.

A word about our recent commits
The trend in recruiting has been toward early commitments, which puts an incredible weight on junior year performance and summer camps. Tedford’s strategy has always been more conservative than most and (despite his more aggressive early offers this year) tends to wait longer than other programs – which gives him a chance to see lots of senior year game film on recruits.
We’ve always ended up with guys who are poorly ranked by services because: 1) they didn’t have their break-out year until they were seniors; 2) they didn’t go to all the summer camps and get pub in the (press) scouting community; 3) they changed positions, which dramatically changs the evaluation of them as a player; or 4) they really are plan B guys and not very good. Why everyone (e.g. see Insiders, Bear) assumes the reason is always #4 is beyond me.
I’m very happy with the commitments of Lee, Coleman, Cooley, Montgomery, Clay, etc. Would I like verbals from Arie, JR, King, etc. more? Sure. But we got some pretty good prospects here. Like all recruiting classes, some will pan out and some will not. But I like our odds with this class.
Hector Sanchez: Underrated. Fighting body bias since the 2009 off season. I still love you, son, even if you're fat.

Fans need to start trusting the coaches a little more
If the coaches feel that a kid is worth offering a scholarship to, then they must see things that the ranking sites (Scout, Rivals, etc) don’t see. A lot of those rankings are limited in scope, outdated, and not representative of what a kid can offer today.
Terrance Montgomery, if you read this then understand that we welcome you to the Golden Bears and are excited to have you on the team.

King, Allen and McCain are buddies, so there was some speculation that if: 1. King commits to Cal 2. Allen commits to Cal 3. Whiteside is not eligible 4. McCain switches to Cal to take the open LB spot.
GOLD OUT MOZAMBIQUE!
Is it not?

Keenan Allen, S (Greensboro, NC)
Some more info RE: Keenan Allen & Zach Maynard:
Allen and Maynard, who made their official visits to Clemson last weekend, are scheduled for official visits to Cal this weekend. Allen had been committed to Alabama but is now giving Clemson and Cal equal consideration. Maynard, who is transfering from Buffalo, is down to Clemson and Cal.

Maynard, come to Cal. We have the best education you can get and you will be learning from one of the best QB guru. When you graduate, you will have a great shot at the NFL otherwise you will still get one of the top entry level job available.
Oh and bring your brother with you.
and bring the holy hand grenade of Antioch.

Just received confirmation that both Allen and Maynard are going through with their visit to California and they are expected there later this afternoon.
paid link, so I don’t have full scoop.
wish I could be there to greet at the airport. I don’t think anyone would confuse me with the Tennessee ho-stesses.
Come on guys, stop being so weird about this. Greet them at the airport???

The weather in Berkeley is actually one of our biggest selling points. The mild year round weather is perfect for football. I would hope our coaches point out to recruits that they won’t be passing out from heat exhaustion during summer training camp like in most parts of the country. Also, San Francisco only has 104 cloudy days a year, with the rest being clear or partly cloudy so you get plenty of sunshine. Compare that to Eugene with 208 cloudy days a year and Seattle with 225! We got it pretty pretty good in the Bay Area.

Gabe King, DE (Eugene, OR)

I’ve stayed out of the Owa, Gabe King issues because so much is unknown it’s not even worth commenting and seems to change hourly. After everything I’ve seen over the years in recruiting, it wouldn’t shock me to see them both announce for Oregon at all. I highly doubt it, but recruiting gets strange this time of year when we all only know some of the story. Feels to me like Owa to Nebraska and King to Cal.
His visit’s today…we’ll know for sure soon enough.

Coleman Edmond, WR (Los Angeles, CA)
From MoragaBear:
“In December, Coach Daft, who’s buddies with our defensive coordinator at Pierce, Josh Phillips, ended up getting in touch with me,” said Edmond. “I think they may have played NFL Europe together and Coach Phillips told him about me. They really liked my film.”
“In track, I ran a 10.5 unofficially in high school and a 10.68 officially and a 4.4 forty.”
“Coach Tedford told my parents that he was really going to get after us this year,” said Edmond, with a laugh. “I’m not sure what that means but he’s a winner. He wants to win. I don’t think he’s going to settle for a 5-loss season again this year.”
Im very excited Coach T has gotten back to recruiting the smaller quicker guys, I think our offense performs better with those types of receivers.
I am completely basing this off of Hawk, RJ, and DJax, and nothing else.
In communist Russia, Sanchez declares YOU!
Other things from the article: he was recruited by both ‘SC and Tennessee, had a UCLA offer, and already burned his redshirt so looks like he has 2 to play 2 barring an injury waiver. Given that, I think Tedford must think this guy can contribute immediately. I’m excited.
Might be time for a home stretch thread
