Lane Kiffin the new coach at USC
His dad Monte Kiffin will be joining him as the new defensive coordinator; Ed Orgeron will be coming along; Norm Chow is supposedly working on leaving UCLA to be USC's new OC.
Update: New reports indicate Chow will not be seeking the USC OC job.
On the one hand, Lane is kind of a loudmouth and his coaching pedigree is rather spotty...on the other hand, the dude can recruit (and Orgeron can DEFINITELY recruit), and that's all you really need to do to be successful at SC. Plus his dad is a top defensive mind and we all know Cal's problem against the Trojans has been their offense.
Whether he can keep the Trojans at Carroll's level remains to be seen, but it looks like USC made a pretty good hire.

It will be so much easier hating $C now, I always respected Carroll, but Kiffy?
Am I known as Cugel the Clever for nothing?
No kidding. I somewhat admired Pete, but hate Kiffin. We just HAVE TO destroy USC from now on! To all those Tedford detractors out there, can you imagine going thru this coaching-change turmoil? It’s nice to know we have a good man at UCB who CAN carry us where we want to go.
Why so much hatred for Kiffin?
I mean, getting canned by Al Davis is practically a badge of honor. I mean, he called out Urban Meyer, but whatever, that’s just SEC crap, who no one over here cares about that.
I don’t get it?

He’s a spoiled kid who creates lots of controversy, but he’s so well-connected that he succeeds in spite of himself. He has Harbaughitis and creates controversy for the sake of it. And he’s not even a good coach on his own
7
To be fair, we don’t know if he is a good coach yet. He had an average season at Tennessee, but Tennessee was also in rebuilding mode. I also don’t think we can draw any conclusions from his time at Oakland, seeing as it was the Raiders.
Speaking or Harbawitdabaw, I really wished had been given the USC job. It’d be even MORE fuel to hate them – my hatting is good, but extra logs never hurt! (My hatred for Stanfurd, however, is fueled by ultra-efficient, powerful matter-anti-matter reactions, a source of power so great it will never be extinguished. But then again, he’s SO fun to hate at Stanfurd! I guess I just hope he stays in the Pac-10 a while because he’s so fun to hate.

Yeah, but Monte Kiffin is like 70 years old, so its not like he is a long term solution at defensive coordinator.

With NewWeasel and Wiffin both in town recruiting, I would think that all used car salesman and circus ring leaders are fleeing town.
Checkered History
Raiders – 1 yr (Can’t get along w/ the owner. Well, not many can when it’s Al Davis)
Tenn – 1 yr (Numerous minor NCAA infractions, finally leading to an investigation on the use of “hostess”)
$C – ? yr(s)
Choosing someone from Carroll’s family tree prob stabilizes the recruits. He’s def gonna need Orgeron & Monte.
Tosh – call Brandon Willis
To be fair, getting fired by Al Davis is good for a coach’s resume. And the hostess thing at UT seems to have been an ongoing issue for years, so I doubt he was directly involved with it at all.

HELLO KIFFY
If he does for U$C what he did for Tennessee and the Raiders, we should beat the rush and start loading up on Rose Bowl tickets. All he has accomplished as a head coach is to compile a mediocre record, run his mouth to excess, and jump ship at the first opportunity leaving a program in shambles. Anybody who clocks SEVEN reported NCAA violations in less than a calendar year is the kind of guy who could get the Trojans SMU’d with a minimum of effort.
As a Vandy man and a Cal supporter, I feel compelled to break out the champagne tonight…and the popcorn every day he coaches thereafter. =)

As with all things coaching related, best to wait for a press release. Certainly doesn’t make a ton of sense of Chow to go to USC.
The report never made any sense to begin with considering it would have meant Kiffin giving up his offense to a guy he couldn’t get along with to begin with.

Actually, it makes a lot of sense. Dollars and cents (pardon the bad pun) for Chow to go to USC. They can easily pay him a lot more than UCLA can.
After almost three decades of being an offensive coordinator I’m not convinced that Chow’s mercenary enough to go to USC and call plays for Kiffin’s offense.

I think this is a TERRIBLE hire for USC. Think about it. Where has Kiffin actually DONE something while in charge. They’ll lose four games a year and the Trojans will go nuts. Bringing the old gang back doesn’t usually work, and watch as Kiffin continues to play fast and loose with the rules, as the NCAA closes in.
by BlackandOldGold on Jan 12, 2010 8:43 PM PST reply actions
Kiffin itself isn’t a great hire. If they landed Chow-Monte-Orgeron, it’s a GREAT hire. Remember Tennessee played Florida and Alabama very close, nearly beat Bama in Bama…getting all those guys assembled could be huge upside. Even if Chow and Monte’s best days were five-ten years ago, at 80-85% they’re still really freaking good.

I don’t believe that Chow’s coming to USC. If he does, Kiffin’s going to have to let Chow run his offense, which is the reason why he and Kiffin/Carroll couldn’t get along to begin with.

Yes, and assembling a great staff has worked swimmingly for “CRN”. I’m sorry, but Kiffin is 12-17 as a head coach and has proven absolutely nothing thus far. To me, this reeks of desperation. Way to land your sixth or seventh choice SC.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
I don’t see how his head coaching record is very relevant. He had one year with the Raiders, a terrible franchise severely lacking in talent, and one year at a college program. Establishing your system and bringing your players in takes time, I just don’t think two separate one year stints are meaningful one way or another.
by Missing Barry on Jan 12, 2010 9:41 PM PST up reply actions
I don’t see how his head coaching record is very relevant.
Relevant wasn’t the word you were looking for. I believe you meant to say “conclusive,” as in, “I don’t see how Kiffin’s head coaching record is conclusive in showing that he’s a shit head coach.” Kiffin’s head coaching resume is relevant in that it’s absurd that USC hired a head coach with a losing record over other, better candidates who may or may not have been considered.

Right, and USC shouldn’t be considering coaches whose head coaching records tell them nothing.
Kiffin hasn’t been proven to be a shit coach, but he hasn’t been proven to be a good coach either, which you think would be pretty important at USC.

by Missing Barry on Jan 13, 2010 2:14 PM PST up reply actions
First if all, three head coaching gigs in three years screams character concerns. Second, many good coaches have success in year one despite having to install a new system and perhaps enter a program with problems.
An even bigger concern is that USC may be in serious trouble with the NCAA and they just hired a guy that got in hot water fairly fast at Tennessee.
So, I repeat, they got a guy without success as a head coach and that isn’t at all squeaky clean. Sounds ideal.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
by BeastMode on Jan 13, 2010 5:40 AM PST via mobile up reply actions
That ignores that one of those jobs was the Raiders, which means the record he compiled there should be dismissed for any number of reasons, including the Raiders sucking (no head coaching is going to succeed in a year there), and it being understandable that he left after one year (remember Davis writing a letter of resignation for him to sign, and him not signing it?) because it’s the Raiders, after all, and they don’t exactly have a history of treating coaches well or a quality organization to support the coach. Technically he coached part of the next season, but that whole situation was weird and pretty much the Raiders acting like the classless franchise they’ve shown themselves to be time and time again.
Next at UT he compiled an alright record – he went to a bowl his first year, so I don’t think you can call the season a failure, by any means. Nick Saban had the same record at Alabama his first season (7-6), and Pete Carroll was 6-6 his first year at USC….
All I’m saying is his coaching record doesn’t tell us anything about whether he’s a good coach or not. Your point about being squeaky clean, on the other hand, is definitely something that should have been considered in the hiring process. Changing jobs as often and in the fashion he did might tell us something, too.

I am on the fence with this hire
I think it was a good hire because he has roots to SC, Pete Carroll and will help with continuity. He is bringing in a good staff (with or without Chow) with Ed Orgeron but I am still not sold on Monte.
Right now, no one really knows how good of a coach Kiffin is. He failed in Oakland but that isn’t unusual. He had a decent year at UT in a rebuilding year but he seemed to talk a bigger game and never backed it up on the field. His signature game was a close loss to Bama but he also got destroyed against VaTech and UCLA beat him in Knoxville.
Plus I think Kiffin, despite having HC experience is going to experience some growing pains and will be under a microscope at SC. I also think the connection to Pete Carroll kind of hurts him. People are going to expect Kiffin to come in and keep things status quo, thus if he stumbles early people might not be as forgiving.
Yes he wasn’t the first choice at SC but neither was Pete Carroll. I believe a lot of SC fans and CFB people kind of scratched their heads and laughed at SC when they hired Pete.
Truth is only time will tell whether this was a good decision or not.
Good points. I think it’s funny how people keep bringing up how close he was against Bama and Florida this past year.
NO ONE talks about the losers, everyone talks about the winner. No one talks about how close Tedford got to beating the 2004 USC (national championship) team. Everyone has upsets, but even if it’s inches, a mistake, a missed tackle, missed field goal, bad ref call, whatever it is, the difference between in an upset that actually results in a win and one that ends is a loss is monumental. Winning is everything.
So I don’t get why Kiffen gets praised for those two games. He lost em both. Losing isn’t hard. Winning if damn hard.
My point: I like our chances. SC’s replacing a proven winning coach with a relative unknown. I’ll take that any day. Go Bears.

Aftershocks @ Knoxville
The outgoing Vols coaching staff tried to get him [Brandon Willis] to follow them to Los Angeles.
"They had the nerve to call me and ask me to come to Southern Cal," Willis said. "And coach Ed Orgeron (who will follow Kiffin back to Los Angeles) said that he was going to be my coach at Tennessee."
“I am not going to Tennessee, I am not going to South Carolina, I am not going to Clemson,” Willis said. “I am not sure what I am going to do now. I am going to sit down with my dad and talk about it.”
The first thing I [Ahmad Dixon] did was call (fellow Vols commit) Markeith Ambles and he didn’t even know about it. I was shocked, I guess.

This is a really important point for Cal
USC will never have problems recruiting talent. It’s USC.
However, for at least the next few years, Cal has a big potential advantage in recruiting. For kids (and their parents) who want a sense of stability and trustworthy commitment from the coaching staff, Tedford and Company now appear to offer that perhaps more than any other program in the Pac-10.
For several years, the stability question worked against Cal, because of the perennial rumors that Tedford would leave for the NFL or some other high-profile program. At best, recruits could me no more certain that Tedford would stick around for their entire career than they were of Carroll at USC. That’s obviously no longer the case.
Combined with the new facilities under construction, this might be the dawn of a recruiting golden age at Berkeley. At least we can all hope.

Brandon Willis to UNC.. mehhh
Brandon Willis, a defensive lineman from James F. Byrnes High School in Duncan, S.C., was on his way Tuesday to enroll at Tennessee when he heard that Kiffin had been hired at $C, said his father, Gary Willis. He said Orgeron called him after Kiffin’s hiring was announced and said that $C was “a dream job” for him and the Kiffins. Willis said Orgeron told him that his son was being offered a scholarship to $C
“You can’t just follow guys like that,” Gary Willis said in a telephone interview. “That’s not what I’m teaching my son.”
“To sit down and tell people stuff and then turn around and do what you do, I don’t like the way it was done, but I can’t control it,” Willis said.
Whatchoo talkin’ about, Willis? I don’t see any mention of UNC there.

ESPNU 150 Brandon Willis switches from Vols to Tar Heels
Brandon Willis, an ESPNU 150 defensive lineman from Byrnes (Duncan, S.C.), has decommitted from Tennessee and picked North Carolina after learning head coach Lane Kiffin had left the Vols for $C.
Willis has now chosen and dropped Tennessee twice. He recently decommitted from Tennessee and was considering both the Heels and fUCLA. The prospect then recommitted to Tennessee during the third quarter of the Army All-American Game.
Man, that was fast. Mostly I just wanted to use the gimmicky catch phrase though.

Not sure if I missed it, but did Carroll have a press conference to announce his departure? Or was his interview with ESPN the only thing he did ‘officially’ regarding his resignation?
If he didn’t, which I’m just going to assume, at least Kiffin had a press conference to announce his decision.
What’s that say about Carroll?
I think it's a good move by the Trojans.
You’ve got someone who’s already familiar with the program and someone dynamic who’ll connect with the players. His presence hearkens back to better days – the man knows about winning Pac-10 titles and national championships, and if they actually get Norm Chow back on board, it’ll get the players and the alums fired up. I think it could help them retain recruits because again, Kiffin’s been there before – he’s got experience coaching champions, and the recruits will connect with that. Plus, having Monte Kiffin as defensive coordinator will be huge, of course. Monte probably did the best he could with the kids at UT, but he’ll be able to open up the whoooole playbook with the athletes he’ll have at USC.
CGB: Wasting Your Potential, Your Time, & Your Life Since 2006.
I can’t really refute this argument. However, I think it’s equally reasonable to view this as a desperate, rushed, panic hire of an unproven young coach. At this point, spectacular success and spectacular fail seem equally likely. I would never bet against the Trojans, but it sure will be interesting to watch.

Surprised no one's mentioned Mariucci yet...
I mean, remember all those riots we had when Mariucci left??? It was madness!!!

Ok, ok, I guess it was more like this:

I was thinking a lot about Mariucci when I was reading all these Lane Kiffin articles. So many parallels…
- First time head coach of a college program.
- Coach with a lot of potential
- Came to head a rebuilding program (well… building a program in our case)
- Both started team slogans that are utterly meaningless now (“It’s Time” and “The 4th Quarter’s Ours”)
And of course – both bolted for greener pastures after only 1 year. What really struck me was a statement that Kiffin made at his first UT press conference:
“I moved around 17 times growing up. I’m going to be here a long, long time.”
That’s basically the same thing that Mariucci said. That’s what really hurt when he left – don’t go out of your way to tell me you’re going to be be here for a long time, and then bolt. Why say it at all? Just be like every other coach – say you’re excited to be here, looking forward to the opportunity, bring success to the program, blah blah blah. Say all the things you’re supposed to say – but why foster irrational love in our hearts by explicitly stating that you’re gonna be here for a long time? It just… seems cruel. I’m not saying coaches can’t leave – hey, sometimes opportunities come up and you gotta make the big decision. (We’ll ignore the rumors suggesting that Mariucci took the Cal job only when the Niners couldn’t force out Seifert fast enough.) But just stick to the script. Don’t get our hopes up with cheap promises – earn our love.
What can we learn from these two flim-flammers? Well, maybe it’s that big, showy promises smack of disingenousness – and that the coaches are trying too hard to win us over because they don’t really want to be there in the first place. Mariucci… well, you remember Seifert’s unceremonious exit – Cal may have just been a placeholder job, or at the least a consolation gig. With Lane Kiffin, some say that he had no respect for UT traditions, and that that his “new” traditions were just old USC traditions he foisted on the UT players. Clearly not not the way to prove that you loooove a place – moves like that show you where your heart really lies.
I understand how the Rocky Toppers feel – as a freshman during Mariucci’s one season, I took his words to heart. And it sucks when the one you trusted – and believed in – betrays you.

According to wikipedia:
When asked by his [Raiders] players about rumors that Kiffin was interested in open coaching positions in college football, he told them he never thought the rumors were important enough to address because he was never planning to leave.
I will say I see why college coaches will say they’re gonna be around – it’s all about recruiting. If they don’t know what the future holds for them (how would Kiffin know USC was going to open up a year after UT, for instance?), they obviously have to plan like they’ll be around for a while, so they tell the parents and players they’re recruiting they’re going to stay for a long time. Now, I don’t agree with it – I think a lot of these guys are like scummy car salesmen that’ll lie to your face because it’s in their interest even when it’s directly against yours, but it stands to reason that there is a purpose to saying they’ll be there a long time.

Tedford didn’t say that right out of the gate – he didn’t feel the need to oversell. He just went about his business! You can plan to be around awhile, but that doesn’t mean you have to say it. Don’t make promises in a business of maybes.
…and I guess the fact that Tedford didn’t do that says everything right there. Just a classy guy, like we already know he is. Too bad they’re aren’t more like him.

Glad to see I wasn’t the only one thinking of ol’ Mooch when this all went down. (Of course, his name being brought up in the discussion didn’t hurt about bringing it to mind.)
There’s another, now almost completely forgotten slogan from that 1996 season. It’s on the t-shirt you got when you bought student tickets. (Speaking of which, I’m going to have to dig that shirt out of the back of the closet and photograph it — the blast from the past would be fun.)
Anyway, the slogan in question was “It’s all of us versus all of them.”
Yeah, that worked out.

Did Kiffen leave the Raiders or was he forced out by Methusela over there? I forget and am just trying to be clear.

After his first season, Al Davis’ way of firing him was to send him a written letter of resignation for him to sign. Except that meant Kiffin wouldn’t be paid the rest of the guaranteed money on his contract, so Kiffin refused. It turned into a big hoopla, Davis didn’t fire him, the season started, and 4 games into the next season they finally fired Kiffin. It was a pretty ridiculous ordeal. I can’t say that Kiffin wasn’t to blame – I don’t know if he had a part in the whole thing or not – what I can say is any reasonable/ethical person in his position probably would have done the same thing…

I know some felt sorry for Wiffin after the Raiders thing, but c’mon, what did he expect? That’s like feeling sorry for the next woman who marries Tiger Woods. Wiffin must have know that he could cash in; even a tumultuous stint with the Raiders. Think about about, it’s somewhat a of no lose situation. If you win, you’re incredible for doing so under Davis rein. If you lose, well, you worked for a Howard Hughes. In any case, you can parlay that gig into a top-notch new gig – Nebraska or Tennessee.
What we should take away from this situation
Don’t take your coach for granted. Phil Fulmer during his Tennessee coaching career declined, but he won a national title and was a year removed from a divisional title. He had a losing season and was forced out, in spite of his ties to Tennessee, as a player, an assistant, and a coach.
They got Lane Kiffin in return, who promptly left after a year.
Maybe Tennessee got what it deserved?
Think about this next time you want Tedford out the door.

After a fielding several strong team, including a final season of 10-6 a playoff appearance, Steve Mariucci was forced out by the San Francisco 49ers.

IMHO
I don’t think Kiffin is the guy they wanted. Based on what was reported, Mike Riley, Jeff Fisher, and Jack Del Rio were all contacted but turned the job down. Chris Peterson, Herm Edwards, John Gruden, and Mariucci had their names come up but I’m not sure if those were just rumors. That drops Lane allllllll the way down the list.
IMO, Kiffin was hired because they couldn’t get anybody else with NFL “experience,” he was a part of the coaching staff during their best years under Carroll’s reign, is a good recruiter and bullshitter, and has the arrogant attitude that matches SC’s.
makes for a good story and I’m sure they’re sticking by it. If nothing else, Garrish can take his time to look for next coach. I guess even Carroll had him fooled about sticking around forever.
I don’t think Kiffin is the guy they wanted.
Apparent enthusiasm down there aside, even the USC faithful acknowledge that.
Behold the Trojan Empire.
"USC Commits Suicide"
Just a snippet:
Had the announcement been concurrent with a move to hire more NCAA compliance people–USC has just four on staff to oversee 19 sports (compared with its eight equipment guys and five video staffers, for example)–then maybe we could acknowledge a serious move on its part to instill some discipline in a department that has been under the pall of investigation for the latter half of this decade.
But that didn’t happen. USC did, however, move some other major mountains to get this thing done. Los Angeles Lakers owner and Trojan alum Jerry Buss stepped to the plate and paid for the Kiffin buy out from Tennessee. Public Storage owner Wayne Hughes provided much of the cash for the incredible staff that is coming with Kiffin to Los Angeles. They should’ve kept their money and demanded that USC do the right thing. Instead, they might have helped sew [sic] the seeds of their team’s demise.
