Best Overall Basketball and Football Team
This is for sure the kiss of death but a national colleges sports writer from Rivals/Yahoo picks Cal as having the best chance of winning its conference in both football and basketball. In a ferociously competitive college sport landscape dominated by perennial powerhouses like Texas, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Florida, which actually accomplished both a few years ago, the little school from Berkeley has actually entered the conversation. I'm not sure Cal is ready for all this; I'd like to stay ranked around #10 until the USC game and not fall off the hype machine as hard as we did two years ago. A Rose Bowl, even if it comes from being second best in the Pac-10, is enough for me.
The opinions expressed in a FanPost are, in every way, reflective of the opinions of every California Golden Blogs Marshawnthusiast. Moreover, they are reflective of every employee of SBNation, including Tyler "Blez" Bleszinski.

I'm really not certain this is a curse against Cal
In hoops, Kansas and North Carolina are likely to cruise to their conference titles, Kentucky and Tennessee are going to battle for the SEC crown, but none of their football counterparts have much of a chance to win anything substantial.
The other candidates are probably Ohio State and Texas.

Uh, what? Yes, we haven’t always been known for both football and basketball, but we have been known for at least 60 years of play. I mean we’re not exactly a Southern Montana State or anything (yes, I made that up). We have always been a great location for athletics in general, and I give all credit to Athletic Director Sandy Barbour for bringing ALL of our sports up to snuff. We have 27 Varsity sports and over the course of the school’s history, California has won national titles in 16 different sports and 66 team titles overall. [Wikipedia] All I’m saying is that we’ve always been here and deserve a little respect for that.
Now, is it a curse? Nah. The curse only has an effect if our guys get a big head, and I think our players, and fans, have had enough of the tough times to realize you’re only as good as your play on the field/court. Tedford and Monty are especially aware of this.
Are we ready for it? Who the heck knows. I know I’m just going to enjoy the ride!
But I absolutely agree with you on this:
A Rose Bowl, even if it comes from being second best in the Pac-10, is enough for me.
Honk if you think Rags is great!
