2009 Cal Football Game Watch Parties
If you guys have additional places to watch Cal football (friendly bars or other meetup areas), please list them in the comments and I'll add it to the list (For example, LeonPowe has talked about a Shanghai meetup, in case you happen to be boarding a flight to China in the next few hours...).
Cal-Maryland will be a national telecast, so you should have no trouble watching it, but if you're looking to root along with Cal fans, hopefully this list helps you out. If anyone asks tomorrow during the game threads about places to watch the game, refer them here. I'll also try and keep this thread bumped up week-by-week.
Here are the offical lists of meetups so far. If I get the chance, I'll edit in any other bars/restaurants/public locations friendly to the Bears. ($) indicates you might have to pay a fee of some sort. It isn't fully indicated on the alumni site.

I don't have enough time to put up a Google Map right now, but I'll certainly have it up before Eastern Washington, when Cal fans WILL need game watch parties.

Avinash: There’s a bar called Sign of the Whale in Dupont Circle – IIRC it’s a student bar during the week that doubles as a Cal alumni bar on gamedays.
dboneisloose
Ah, that used to be the offical Cal alumni meetup, but it seems they moved to Chinatown. Sign of the Whale still shows Cal games?

It’s a late game, so the game is at a different bar. Sign of the Whale is more of a dancing bar at night, so it’s at RFD instead.
The The is above help.
Sign of the Whale is a dancing bar? HAHAHA?

It was at the Sign of the Whale
The Maryland game at RFD is more an exception than the rule. The Cal viewing is likely going to be at Sign of the Whale (except for the Stanfurd game).

Sorry for being slightly off-topic, but may I ask where everyone is tailgating near campus? It would be nice to see more bear fans show up at the U.C. parking lot on Shattuck Ave and Berkeley Way, across from Triple Rock brewery. Trolley to the stadium is nearby too.
Shattuck Ave & Berkeley Way, Berkeley, CA 94704

Hydro, Twist, Rags, et. al., maybe we could get a post going about where everyone will be tailgating?
Only problem with that is that some of our commenters (including some of our mods) would like to keep their tailgate locations private.
But sure, I’ll put up a thread, we’ll see where it goes. Might be a good way to gather all the miscellaneous tailgate locations.

ok, thanks for the post Avi! that’s one thing I never get about online interaction, people tend to want to stay hidden. coming from the old school, I guess I just don’t get that. I’m more than happy to meet Cal fans of all types and it was great chatting it up for a bit with Rags, Hydro and other CGB fans during the Emerald Bowl tailgate. well, folks know of at least one more spot to tailgate now and I hope to see more Cal fans there than last year.
by SonofCalifornia on Sep 4, 2009 5:01 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, but these guys already have pretty established tailgating patterns and things they do/people they meet on Cal gameday, and/or they want to keep their online personas separate from their personal lives. Which is totally understandable.
I don’t have that problem because I have no life. I might have some time to drop by in the afternoon, just email me and let me know how to find you.

Would you like to come and sit with me? It will be very enjoyable.
All aboard the Jahvid Best rickshaw!
I don’t actually much care about staying hidden, although some others around here have their reasons. I would much prefer that my real name not be associated with my online blogging persona, if only for future employment reasons, but beyond that, I don’t much care if people know who I am.
That said, Avi makes a good point up there that we’ve all got established tailgating patterns. I try to hit up at least two tailgates every pregame (one on Northside, in the parking lot off Euclid), and one at my old fraternity house, way over on southside. If you know who I am, feel free to say hi, although I don’t want to be more specific than that, since I’m not hosting either tailgate, and so don’t want to invite too many people, overwhelming the organizers. I also try and make it to the band’s pregame concert on Sproul Steps at least once a season. It can get busy for me.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Without going into specifics, was your frat founded between 1865-1875 at a university in Virginia? Because that would be a crazy coincidence.
I need your google map shot for this post to work.

Westside LA Watch party
The Westside LA party will be at Busby’s West on Santa Monica Blvd and Berkeley St (nice, huh?). We meet in the back rooms of the bar with the big projection screen and separate sound system from the front bar. This will be key as the game is late on Sat. Even if you don’t huddle with us in the back, be sure to ask for the CAL menu as they give discounts on beer, pizza, and other items from the bar. See you there!
Great to hear. I won’t make it to this game but I will for sure try and make the rest. I’m going to the Yard House downtown with a couple of friends.

Busby's
I loathe Busby’s on general principle, not the least of which is that the supposed home of Cal football games in West LA doesn’t display a Cal banner on it’s row of flags. Ucla and U$C? Oh sure, they’re there, but Cal?
Just for that they get no soup from me. So to speak.
Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
Are there better places in LA SoCal Oski?

Probably not. The old Cal watch bar was O’Brien’s a couple blocks away, on Wilshire & 23rd (I think). Other than that, I guess you’d just need to ask your local barkeep to turn to the channel (if they have it).
The only advantage Busby’s has for me is it is within stumbling distance of home. The disadvantages are the hoards of douchebags & Ucla types who congregate there on a regular basis. Sometimes I think this town needs an enema.
Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
Heh. I’ll be down there for Minnesota game and asked my buddy about Busby’s… he gave me a straight up “blech” review. But he lives right across the street from O’Briens (behind the Whole Foods) so if we ended up anywhere it would be there just by chance. I’ve been there before, it’s a fine pub for watching a game and seems relatively douchenozzle free. Then again, with the early start for MN we’ll probably just stay at his place and snuggle.

Dang. That’s actually kind of sweet. In a saccharine way. :)

whoops, sorry
I didn’t see this.
We were at Big Bamboo in Shanghai. There was one in Beijing at All Star Cafe, and I think the Hong Kong one was at someone’s apartment. I’ll find out for subsequent games where the greater China viewing parties are.
Nice--Leon, are these weekly parties, or just for nationally televised broadcasts?

I think for
bigger games . .. and games which fit this region’s time schedule easily (last year we did USC, Maryland and Oregon) – any evening kick-off on the west coast fits perfectly (Maryland was 10am here in Shanghai – Oregon 2 years ago we went to my friend’s apartment at 4:30am to watch)
Afternoon kickoffs are the worst, but those I tend to fire up the computer and listen to Starkey and watch the open thread here and the gamecast – or via slingbox. I think they have a bigger fanbase in Hong Kong.
more Cal good news ( Aaron Rogers)
just cuz you are the only one still up, and, I can’t sleep after watching that Riley pass to Jones, ( omg!) I thought u might like this:

the spread
if anyone is still up and reading this blog, my son, my nephew, and I bet on the spread, giving the Terps 21 points, which we easily won. My problem now, tho, is wtf the spread is going to be next week, and, who thinks they know how much to give? 40?
Eastern Washington is 1AA, no?
Usually there’s no spread on Bowl Series vs. CHampionship Series teams as far as I know.
Chicago
No fee required for the Full Shilling watch parties (though food and drink obviously cost money).
Thanks
Updating that now!

Are you in Houston BeastMode?
We used to go (it was a group of about 8-12 people) to the Buffalo Wild Wings in Midtown (gray near smith) there was also a group of ’SC alums there too who would help us trash talk the Big 12 and SEC fans unless we were playing each other.
Boston last week was wicked awesome
There were well over 100 people at the Baseball Tavern and we had the whole newly-renovated basement (with like 15 TV’s) to ourselves.
Come out this week at 5:30 EST if you’re in town, hopefully we’ll have a good turnout again. Go Bears!
I’m assuming Orange County meetup above might work?

I gotta ask. What’s the point of a watch party when there’s you know nothing to watch?
In other words, Go Bears!
There might be Sirius Listening parties…who knows. Some of the places above will make the arrangements (I imagine at the very least the NYC ones will be tuned to Starkey.)

But doesn’t it always suck to be in Tampa?

Fortunately, I’m only here til January. Then its watch party in Virginia! …sadly, it sucks there too :(
Thanks. Its rough being a fan overseas. Fortunately, when I was in belgium, I had a good friend who just to happened to be a die hard Tennessee fan. So we flew to Berkeley in ’07 to watch the game. Longest game trip…evar haha.

Gar Woods, North Lake Tahoe
Just wanted to mention that Gar Woods bar and grill is a pretty cool place to watch a Cal game should you be in the North Lake Tahoe area. Went there for the recent Cal-UCLA matchup and had a nice time. The restaurant is easy to get to and has a Cal flag prominently perched over its main entrance, demonstrating its allegiance to our alma mater (I think the owners are Cal alumns).
Once seated inside, you get a great view of the lake and surrounding mountains. In the bar area there are 3 large flat screen TVs to watch the game. Service was good and the bar was bustling but never over crowded. Food was good too.
At the bar I met Chet Curtis and Ed Turner of the Bears in the Woods alumni group. Nice guys. Apparantly 10-15 members of this group regularly meet at Gar Woods to watch the Cal games so you’ve always got a built-in fan base there. This was nice since it meant my family and I weren’t the only ones in the entire bar whooping and hollering every time Cal scored a touchdown. Other than the scenery the vibe was such that you felt you were in a small bay area bar rooting along with other Cal fans.
Oh, and only second in importance to the game itself was the beer. Good selection and reasonable prices so another plus. And my mom and my wife also enjoyed the mixed drink menu so sounds like the ladies have some choices there too.
I’ll try to post the pics I took at a later time so you can get an idea of the place.
GO BEARS!
