Note:
First, props to danzig for all the time and effort he puts into posting his great highlights. I for one have been appreciating them very much, the last few seasons. Because of the huge array of highlights that are done now, the work needed to post all the time is tremendous.
TouchedTheAxe and myself will begin helping danzig out with the regular posts such as this. So know that we’re not stealing his ideas…merely helping out. :-) Enjoy!

I really can’t thank ieeeBear and TouchedTheAxe enough. Sharing duties will allow us to spend more time on each video, thus improving the overall quality and allowing us not to get burned out. This will be especially helpful before the NFL Draft, when there’s a lot of pressure to get the videos out before the draft.
Also big thanks to PRD74 and Chicagoaubear for all their work.
Those Seattle uniforms were truly hideous
Maybe it’s a Pacific Northwest thing.

Serious question
I’d want to know how much Rodgers and Boller have had to alter their deliveries since getting to the NFL. I know there was a lot made about the Tedford windup when Rodgers came out of Cal, and I remember reading some things about how he was being forced by the Packers coaching staff to alter his release because they didn’t like it. I don’t think there’s been a whole lot written recently about Tedford making his QBs conform to it (I don’t remember Longshore holding the ball as high as Rodgers did, and I think we can all agree Riley’s mechanics are inconsistent at best) – so does he even still do it?

There was an article at the beginning of this season I believe where Rodgers was talking about how he had had a high shelf delivery. After a couple seasons, they worked to make his motion a little bit more natural – moving the shelf down a little. He was quoted as saying that the original high shelf helped him develop a quick release, but he was happy to be back to his more natural form.
The highlights have gotten my roommate who was previously uninterested in Cal football interested in following the team because he knows he’ll see players in the NFL eventually.
Unfortunately, the Oregon game didn’t help.
At least it’s better than HolmoePhobe’s roommate, who is still trying to figure out how many downs there are in a game.

Wide-screen format
I think i need to rethink using the wide-screen format. I chose it because most of the NFL footage is HD and wide-screen. But when posting on CGB, the embedded footage looks itty bitty. The normal video on vimeo looks fine…
Any thoughts?
Yeah, you can modify the embed code by hand to have a custom width and height.
Just change the two width and height params in the embed code (they show up in 2 spots each in the code) to be whatever you want. If you’re producing videos in HD, then you want 16 * height / 9 = width

Yeah, i changed the embed code originally, from 451×248 to 451×338, which produced the two black bars on the top and bottom. How could i get it to slice into the footage on the left and right?
Slice into the footage on the left and right? If you want it to appear as it does on Vimeo’s site then assign the resolution to be 640×352, which is probably the native resolution of the video. It should also actually be less CPU-intensive for people to play the video, too, because it doesn’t need to scale from the native res (Flash is terrible at scaling video)

Nvm, I see what you’re saying. You want it to zoom-to-fit the 4:3 aspect ratio of the player embed? Unfortunately that’s up to Vimeo’s flash player and they don’t want to do that; they would rather letterbox.
The best thing you can do, then, is just encode it at 4:3, although IMO it’s a crappy solution.

Yeah, the word i was looking for was crop, but somehow “slice” came out. I started it at 16:9, thus the result.
Actually there might be a way for you to get it so that the player fits in the small box on the frontpage but when you click through you get the 640×352 version. It would take some CSS tweaking by Avinash or whoever the admin is, though. Basically you can just wrap the player embed code in a div whose width and height is defined by the CSS and then set the embed code to have width and height be 100%. I haven’t tested it on all browsers, just Firefox, but it seems like that would work? Anyway, just some food for thought.

zoom vs frame cropping
Try and use a 4:3 template or assign a screen size of 480×360. The footage you import will be too wide and bleed out of the edges, but don’t scale the footage to fit. Since you’re assigning a finite screen size, the finish product essentially frame crops a 4:3 box from the widescreen. I find that actually zooming lowers the quality significantly. You still won’t fill the frame unless you zoom, but the widescreen is less pronounced… and the players appear bigger while maintaining image quality.
Every NFL week that goes by I can’t help but think 2006 was a huuuuuuge missed opportunity. Desean, Marshawn, DeCoud, Forsett, Bishop, not to mention Follett, Wiliams, and a non-injury plagued Longshore.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
Amazing. Very well done!
