No joke.
Not that I thought I would have done any better but his eyes glazed over and fell like a chump. If he was in the ring he would have been down for the count.
He instantly dropped him but once he got picked up and put back on his feet he looked as if he was catching his bearings pretty quickly. Keep in mind a cheap shot from any 6’2, 240lb guy like Blount would drop just about anyone

Kick him off the team?
Got a poll over at my blog… how do you guys think he should be disciplined?:
http://excusemeformyvoice.com/blog/
(On the sidebar)
I would suspend him maybe for awhile. I wouldn’t kick him off the team since that probably means he’d have to transfer, and his reputation will follow him.
Kid needs help, he’s not going to get it if he leaves college.

I think I agree. Although he has been a trouble-maker before this. He missed over a week of spring ball because of discipline reasons. Kelly might need to get rid of him not because of this incident but because he’s a cancer to the team.
Chip Kelly thought he was given a gift of a promotion but he just found out that it’s a whole new world as head coach instead of OC.
I don’t think it’s about punching the other player as much as going after the fans. What if he reached them and punched them too? Whether or not he did, he’s displayed actions that are unsuitable for representing a university.
by CalBandGreat on Sep 4, 2009 12:40 AM PDT up reply actions
I agree that going after the fans is at least as big a deal as the punch. For two reasons:
The first is what you said, it’s a horrible way to have someone representing the University.
But just as importantly, that was not a split second/momentary lapse of judgment. The punch, could have very well just been a momentary lapse, but he was well aware that he was in a dangerous emotional state when he got close to those fans. To still go ballistic is no longer a momentary lapse. Add in that he freaked out for a couple minutes and there’s just no “lapse of judgment” defense.
But I’m still unsure if I support going as far as kicking him off the team. Perhaps an indefinite suspension and letting him know that he’s not back on until it’s clear that he’s gotten himself under control and has made restitution.
If he’d gotten to the fans and touched them in anger, can you imagine the liability UofO would be facing right now? THEN he’d probably be off the team. You guys are right; that’s a much bigger deal than the punch. Good thing their coach was big enough to control him.
My view is that the Boise St. guy probably deserved it for taunting him after such a dominating game, but of course I don’t condone the punch. LGB should get a suspension that keeps him out of at least the first Pac10 game, and I’m not saying that because it’s the Cal game. UofO needs to demonstrate how serious they are about this sort of behavior by making it hurt both him and the team. I gotta say, I was SHOCKED watching it; just couldn’t believe what was happening. Belotti may need to step in on this one.
I'd like to smell the Roses before I die.
I think the word “deserved” here is confusing and disconcerting. It appears that the BSU player was no angel, he slapped Blount on the shoulder and yelled something in his face. He was a sore winner.
That said, I’m not sure what the correct reaction is to that. As I have to counsel so many on this blog when dealing with HolmoePhobe, take the high road. Don’t let him get under your skin.
But Blount, like so many on this blog when dealing with HolmoePhobe, went the exact opposite route and tried to physically assault the guy. I don’t believe that the guy deserved a physical assault in this place.
ALL HAIL SUPREME LEADER AVINASH!
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
Eh, I disagree, from the perspective of the Boise St player, I’m comfortable saying he deserved it. However, from the perspective of Blount, he definitely should have taken the higher road. It’s one of those situations where the outcome should be the guy doesn’t get what he does actually deserves, because nobody stoops to his level.
by Missing Barry on Sep 4, 2009 8:31 AM PDT up reply actions
So, if I understand you correctly, you believe that the BSU player deserved to get punched in the face, but you didn’t believe Blount should (or would) actually do that?
If that is the case, I disagree strongly. Even though the BSU player did slap Blount’s shoulder and yell something in his face, I don’t believe that there is much that could justify physical assault.
ALL HAIL SUPREME LEADER AVINASH!
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
Yep that’s pretty much how I feel. It was a completely classless move on the BSU guy’s part, and he got what he deserved for it. But yeah, Blount actually hitting him like that was even lower, and he obviously shouldn’t have done it…
by Missing Barry on Sep 4, 2009 8:55 AM PDT up reply actions
Am I the only one who believes that to be a fairly extreme position? I mean no disrespect towards Missing Barry, who obvi is taking the loss of BLark very hard. I guess I just believe that the bar for “physical assault” is much higher than Missing Barry.

I’ve got your back Twist!
There’s nothing about saying “Hey, nice Ass Whooping” that deserves a punch.
Umm... I didn't just post nothing.
What happend to my text?
What I said was "I’ve got your back Twist! “Hey, nice ass whooping” does not deserve a punch."
Your text is still there
But the rumor is that he used the n-word to Blount.
In other words, Go Bears!
I don’t think it’s that extreme, I’m not actually advocating anyone punching him, just saying he was being a douche and I doubt you see him mouth off to anyone like that ever again. I’m not for assaulting anyone, but a little deterrence would probably end a lot of this kind of behavior…
It mostly comes down to me not feeling sorry for the BSU guy in the least bit.

Depends on what he said
While words should never result in physical violence, if what he said was really bad – racial, etc., then I must say I’m ok with popping him one and taking my consequences for the action.
If that’s the case, when putting yourself in that situation, then logically you should be OK with being kicked off the team.
If the correct penalty for doing this if there was nothing “really bad” said, was to be kicked off the team and him saying something pretty bad is what justifies you doing it, and you’ll take the consequences of such an action, then you should take the consequences of being kicked off the team.
Not to get on my high horse
(Too late!) but what is it with all of the comments that effective say “words should never result in violence, but if it’s really bad, violence is OK”? Do people not understand what the word never means or are people just hypocrites?
Of course the correct answer is that it’s natural for human being to be hypocrites, but it really bothers me how often these days I see people saying things that are internally inconsistent and hypocritical and nobody seems to even notice or care.
Getting down from my high horse now…

Yeah, if my Catholic blog was up and running, I would. I get in too much trouble as it is for moralizing around you guys ;-)
Fact
Things to remember: Girls don't appreciate it when you yell "Beast Mode!" when switching to doggy style
There is a should in front of that never, and it is highlighted for a reason.
In a perfect world, it should never occur. However, in the action world of emotions and reality, it does occur. Blount did what he did and now he must accept the consequences. I know myself well enough to know that I would cross that line that I should not cross, were I pushed hard enough (note: I would really hope that line is far beyond Blount’s line last night). So maybe saying I’m “ok” with it is a poor choice of words – I wouldn’t be ok with it, even were I to have done it. But I’m living in the real world where I can see it happening, even to me in the hypothetical. And were it to occur, I’d accept the consequences. You cannot prevent people from doing things, sometimes even yourself. However, we need to move society to a place where we accept responsibility for our actions.
And just for the record – and to get on my high horse – that accepting of responsibility goes for everyone. I think that what the Boise State player did should carry consequences, I think what the fans did was likely worse and should carry consequences.
What if Blount had not charged the fans but had cussed them out and hard as he was getting it?
Would we be ok with that? Probably not. Then why do we seem to be ok with those fans, why do we accept fans like that in our midst? These ethical issues are NOT just for the players. We the fans need to be held to a higher standard as well.
OK, fair enough. I guess I’d hope that we’d be striving harder to avoid what we all might do in that situation than accepting our weaknesses, but I do understand what you’re saying. But it does take it out of the hypocritical category. :-)
Ya, I think I should have said “I could see myself popping him” rather than “I’m ok with popping him”. The former is a
True dat
No, I don’t think he deserved getting punched in the face although I realize that’s exactly what I wrote. He deserved SOMETHING for being a total sh#thead winner and I can’t say I’ve got much sympathy for him, but no one deserves that sort of abuse even though they play the ultra-bruising game of football instead of being in the chess club (no offense to the chess-ters out there).

We've been discussing this over at AtQ
The general consensus among Duck fans is he needs to be gone. He not only decked an opposing player, he attacked security officers, his own teammates, and had to be restrained from going into the stands and attacking fans. His half-hearted apology did nothing in my mind to help his cause. He should be gone.
It's spelled "T-A-K-O-T-U-E-S-D-A-Y-S-!-!-!."
I support inroywetrust in his support of The VD Special in his support of me supporting Roger Kieschnick in his quest to becoming the best Kieschnick ever to play professional baseball.
It wouldn't be surprising
Considering the uproar surrounding the ending. I’m pretty sure the national telecast thing might’ve doomed his cause.

If I’m Oregon, I dump him. It’s not like this is the first time he’s had problems.
It makes sense from the perspective of protecting the image of the program/university by taking a hard line, plus if he plays again, you know that clip will be played on every televised game.
But also from a team performance perspective. He will be a distraction and kill team chemistry the rest of the year. At this point, getting rid of him will be addition by subtraction.
GOLD OUT MOZAMBIQUE!
Give credit to Oregon fans. There’s a tendency to defend one’s own (Bonds in SF for example) even when it’s inexcusable. They’re not doing that.

I feel that a few weeks from now we’ll be dicussing the real story behind all this, which is that Kelly does not have control of of his team, both on and off the field…the stupid punch was in weird way a blessing for Kelly as it momentarily distracts us from the fact that the Duck really sucked up there…minus 5 rushing for LGB?!?!?!?!
College football is unusually sucky opening Thursday weekend, particularly OOC. All the eyes of the country are on you PLUS you’re unfamiliar with your opponents. Boise wasn’t exactly hot stuff itself, they should’ve been winning the game by much more if their mistakes hadn’t held them back.

This game gave me stronger hope against the Ducks. Many people were saying that they might have OLine problems with a wholly revamped OLine. Ducks fans said that it was not actually as bad as you might think for a variety of reasons.
But last night, it was as bad as I might think. Of course, they’ll have several weeks to work out the kinks. And it will be at home for them. So, I don’t anticipate keeping them without a first down in the first half.
That said, if we see an OLine even reasonably close to what we saw yesterday with our front 7 there, I like our chances at getting reasonably consistent pressure against Masoli.

Typical oregon fans
Reading some comments over at AtQ and now that they’ve “slept on it” they feel bad for LB, and their pretty sure the Boise player used the N-word, even though the tape in no way shows that at all. All fans are biased but if your defending this kid in any way you need to take a step back a really look at how much you actually care about the game.
"Best is Best" - Every single broadcaster this upcoming season, completely original and funny right???
If that’s true, that really sucks. Here I went to bat for them in an earlier comment…
It’s obvious from reading his lips that he was middle of finishing saying “Ass Whooping” (I think he got the “oop” out but not the “ing” before getting punched) so I think it’s unlikely he said Nigger. It’s usually attached to the end of a derogatory phrase, not the beginning (although not always).
If I had to guess, he said “Hey, nice Ass Whooping” and the quickness which it happened there wasn’t much time for insert a Nigger in there.
Not the player, one of the fans. It's around 00:38 in the video, the right-most cap-wearing guy, the older one. It looks like that's what sets Blount off again.
by Yes We Cannon on Sep 4, 2009 8:57 AM PDT up reply actions
Totally guessing
But I think what set Blount off again was the guy without a hat running, right again around 00:38 – you can see him run to the right, peer out, point and then yell, “Fuck you”, and then Blount goes all ape-shit again.
Ah, I didn’t get that. I’d believe it being true.
Well get used to reality Mr. Blount, fans can be classless belligerent assholes. It’s still your job just to march back to the locker room with your head hung low. If fans being idiots is an excuse to go into the stands then the Pacers deserve to win the NBA championship.
On the one hand, you’re absolutely right. On the other hand, as someone who watches a lot of Euro soccer with more overt racism from fans, I have a certain amount of sympathy for player over-reaction. Just my personal bias, and not intended to excuse Blount’s behavior.
Oh, I have sympathy for Blount. I’ve followed the Cal players through the tunnel after a heart-breaking loss in the LA Coliseum and had to listen to the fans who get off on touting players who are heart-broken. It was really bad in 2006 down there. They were saying the most ridiculously vicious racially, culturally, religiously and in any other way possible, bigoted and emotionally charged things you could think of.
I specifically remember thinking to myself that the players deserved far better and I sure hope one of them doesn’t react even though I halfway wanted to do it myself to stand up for them.
But at the same time, I’m a big believer in the manliness of turning the other cheek. When most people hear that phrase they think if a wimpy looking Jesus who won’t hurt a fly saying “we should just love each other” in a feminine voice. But I see it very differently. I see a man, and I mean a manly man, who just got knocked to the ground by a vicious hit who gets back up and, while having his wife and children stand behind him for his protection, offers the other cheek to be punched just as viciously.
The implication of that action is that he’d get back up if you did it again and offer the original cheek for yet another hit and that no amount of beat down is going to deter him from getting back up again. He can not be beaten down. And what’s more, you can’t even provoke him to retaliate. He’s THAT much better than you, and only because he’s manly enough to “take it like a man”.
It’s only giving in to the thugs to resort to thuggery. It’s far more manly to not retaliate than to give in.
Blount would do well to discover this.
If Jahvid Best decided to go medieval on Taylor Mays, would you kick Taylor in the shins to distract him at the same time?
Ponder that. PONDER THAT.
