Interview With Former Cal Kicker Tyler Fredrickson
Thanks to dballisloose, Former Cal Kicker Tyler Fredrickson has agreed to do an interview. We thought we'd open it up to questions from the peanut gallery. What do you want to hear from the man who hit the game winning FG against USC in 2003 and the Insight Bowl winning FG against VTech? GO BEARS!

Given our recent woes in the kicking game, how much of a temptation has it been for you to re-register as a student at Cal under a pseudonym, suit up, and get out on the field and nail some game-winning kicks? I suggest wearing one of those fake mustaches, too. You know, in case the NCAA gets suspicious.
ha ha, almost the exact same question I was going to ask! SOS our kicking game needs some major help!

Ask him if he talks to our current kickers about technique/training.
You know what will erase the pain of Going Bears! last Saturday?

What goes through your mind, generally, when you were about to do a kick?
What were you thinking during the winning kick in USC 2003?
What were you thinking during the winning kick in Insight Bowl 2003?
What first got you interested in kicking?
What was the kicking practice like?
What made you choose Cal over other available schools?

One serious question, one inane question
I will leave it to the mods to decide which is which:
Would it surprise you to know that CALumbus Bear disparages your Cal career and pooh-poohs your game winning kicks vs. USC and VA Tech?
Ryan Longwell and Robbie Keen preceded you at Cal as dual purpose kickers (placekicking/kickoffs and punting). Why do you think we don’t see very many dual purpose kickers anymore?
Praise be to Tedford!
Ahem. T-Freddy made games very “exciting”. And I certainly don’t disparage or pooh-pooh any of the game winning kicks. It’s some of the other kicks. But I’d still happily buy him a beer because he was a Cal player and has a damn fine education.

What’s the biggest difference between kicking in practice and kicking in a game – is it more mental (pressure) or is it more the environment (fans, noise, other team, etc.)?
Were you ever the last man between a kick returner and the end zone? What went through your head then?
What is your favorite football memory from Cal? (I can’t imagine it would be anything other than USC 03, but might as well ask)
What did you like most about Cal outside of football?

Is the team clique-y off the field? Do all the kickers hang out together?
What was the best class you took at Cal and why?
Do you feel that academics are paid enough attention to by the team?
Do you/did you have any other friends who played football at the D1A level? How did their experiences relate to yours?
Do you still keep in contact with any of your teammates from Cal?
What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. What happens in California makes the world go round.
David Seawright writes weekly pieces for Michael Silver’s column. What sort of insights do you get as a kicker watching the team? Are you mostly on your own
There are a lot of jealous haters out there (including on our own site!) of Seawright’s writing ability, and I’m sure as a kicker you also experienced that after you missed big kicks. How do you respond to such irrational hatred?

*Are you mostly on your own with the kicking squad? Or do you watch the other guys too?

I don’t have any questions that haven’t already been mentioned, but I do have a statement:
Thank you for making that kick and playing a huge role in my single greatest moment of Cal fandom. Storming the field that day was the most fun I’ve ever had at a Cal athletic event.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
1) What do you think of when an opposing coach calls a TO to ice you? Does it make you more nervous or does it make you more determined or does it not matter?
2) What made you decide to be a kicker?
3) Why is it that punters don’t always kick off or do place kicking duties and vice versa?
4) How do you prepare for a game?
5) How do you handle opposing fans?
5b) Can you make out specifically what an opposing fan says? Did anyone ever really anger you?
In other words, Go Bears!
What does it feel like to actually win a big game?
Praying that Tim Alderson doesn't come back to bite us
Can we bump this topic up?
I think the post got lost in the post-9/26 debacle. Would like to solicit continued feedback before and after the USC game.
At CGB, we whine because we care
Possibly, although we’re booked right now. We’ll have time during the bye week if you still need more Qs.

So we heard some female gave you a big french kiss after the USC game. Please tell us more details. What other odd/nice/bad things have people done to you because you were the Cal kicker?
